Temple of Seraphim of Sarov in Degunino

The Orthodox faith and spirituality are symbols of the Russian people, the restoration and construction of new churches is proof of this. The Church of Seraphim of Sarov in Degunino is a modern Orthodox shrine in a residential area of the capital, erected with the support of parishioners and patrons.

History of the construction of the Seraphim Temple

Residents of Degunino have long felt the need for a church in their area; visiting churches in other areas required time and money, so they began collecting money for the construction of a spiritual shrine. The first services began in the park area in Dubki, where the worship cross stands.

For ten years, the issue of allocating territory for the construction of a church in the most densely populated area of Moscow was resolved. Then the documentation was approved, and only in 2014 the construction of a temporary church began, which was erected from wood by parishioners.

As soon as April arrived, the begun structure was destroyed, but the parishioners did not give up, and by the fall the first service was held in the chapel under the tutelage of the rector Viktor Gerasimov.

On December 27, 2014, the temporary church, which could accommodate 200 parishioners, was consecrated.

On a note! The Bishop's Liturgy was held at the beginning of 2015.

The church community organizes holidays for Christmas and Maslenitsa, and all the children from the region come running to them. By mid-2015, a project for a stone temple was developed and approved, the foundation pit for which began to be prepared by the end of summer 2021. Along the perimeter of the future shrine of Degunino, earth was laid, taken from the Diveyevo Canal of the Virgin Mary. This process took place in three stages.

On November 6, thousands of parishioners came to lay the first stone of the future Church of Seraphim of Sarov in Degunino, and then the work was carried out in stages:

  • by the spring of 2021, the ground floor was erected;
  • October 2021 - bells are consecrated and installed;
  • end of 2021 - internal and external walls laid.
  • Christmas 2021 - the lower church welcomes parishioners for worship;
  • The beginning of Lent was marked by the installation of crosses on each dome;
  • The second week of Lent is the installation of domes.

Architectural features of the new church

You can enter the large porch (with a porch attached to it) from the western side of the building. On the northern façade there is a bell tower built in the form of a square. The bell tower has two tiers, which are separated by a classical cornice. A hipped roof with an onion-shaped head covers the second tier.

Interesting! A special attraction of the Church of St. Seraphim of Sarov in Degunino are the 15 bells installed on the bell tower.

The ground floor, finished with granite, is intended for service and technical premises; on the same level there is a baptismal church. The main walls are built of red brick, which are planned to be covered with white whitewash in the future.

The decoration of the church is a unique chandelier, in which the lamps are made in the form of candles. The presence of wall lamps provides additional illumination of the temple.

Residents of Degunino call the newly built Church of Seraphim of Sarov the Ark, because the temple forms and decoration resemble Noah’s ship.

Temple of Boris and Gleb in Degunin

Photo: hram-bg.ruThe history of the Boris and Gleb Church in Degunin begins with... its destruction. In 1585, Polish-Livonian soldiers burned a wooden temple in the village of Degunino, which is mentioned in the source. The building we see today was built in the 60s of the 19th century, but it stands on the same spot where the first burned church was located. After the fire, it was empty for a little less than half a century: a new wooden church with the money of a local priest was built in 1633 in the name of the Apostle John, and the chapel was consecrated in the name of Boris and Gleb. The temple stood for almost two centuries. In sources from 1847-1850, it is described as a fairly strong structure, and a stone foundation is also mentioned there. And in 1863, Metropolitan Filaret recognized the wooden church as “rather dilapidated” and gave his blessing for the construction of a stone church in place of the wooden one. They planned to build mainly with money received as compensation from the state: part of the church land was needed to build the Nikolaev railway. There were also donations. For example, the owner of a brick factory, Vasily Prorekhov, donated 360 thousand bricks for construction.

Photo: hranitel.club Like many others, the Soviet government did not spare this temple: the Moscow Regional Council decided in 1941 to convert the church into an outpatient clinic. In the 60s of the last century, the building passed into the hands of the Rodina artel of disabled people, which adapted it into a knitting workshop - this is how a reinforced concrete fence and shapeless outbuildings appeared. Despite the fact that at the same time the church was officially classified as an architectural monument, the Rodina artel treated the building without reverence: the upper tiers of the bell tower were broken and the domes were removed. In the second half of the twentieth century, the factory was replaced by a garage, and only in 1991 the building was returned to the Orthodox community and restoration work began. Now the Temple of Boris and Gleb in Degunin belongs to the Moscow City Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The practice of congregational singing as a means of unity among Orthodox Christians

The Orthodox faith has recently been fully revived on Russian soil; many parishioners do not fully understand the importance and necessity of unity with the Lord and living according to God’s laws in the world. Joint prayer is a means of uniting believers with a single idea and makes it possible to feel direct involvement in the Christian community. Since the time of the first Christians, joint prayer to the glory of the Lord has been practiced; today, joint participation in worship is carried out during the Divine Liturgy. The temple in honor of St. Seraphim of Sarov in Raev is one of those where texts of prayers are distributed to believers during joint prayer. It is here that the prayer of the primate is imprinted with the solemn “Amen” of the entire Orthodox community, it is here that “Peace to all” sounds like a powerful and solemn exclamation of the Orthodox light.
