Church of the Archangel Michael in Troparevo, schedule of services, history of construction

Five kilometers from the resort city of Yalta lies a village with the wonderful name Oreanda, which just a few centuries ago belonged to the imperial house of the Romanovs. In those distant years, the royal village, surrounded by the sea, evergreen forests and high picturesque mountains, was a tasty morsel for influential and noble people who appreciated the beauty and charm of nature at its best.

The nobles came here following the imperial family, bought plots of land on the coast and built luxurious estates here. In addition, Oreanda was the warmest village in Crimea, which made it even more significant in the eyes of those wishing to acquire possessions on the Black Sea.

In 1900, by order of Emperor Nicholas II, the so-called Tsar’s Path was laid from the Livadia Palace to Upper Oreanda. Today this trail, better known as Sunny, is a popular health route.

Tourists are happy to follow the example of the royal family, who loved to walk along the trail, and daily take path paths through the picturesque mountainous area. Moreover, this road covers many local attractions that can be visited along the way.

In particular, along the trail you can get to the main shrine of Upper Oreanda - the unrivaled snow-white church of St. Michael the Archangel, built here 13 years ago. Those planning a trip to Lower Oreanda are recommended to visit another magnificent cathedral - the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Sights and shrines of the Temple of the Archangel Michael in Troparevo

Those who often visit the southwestern outskirts of Moscow know this temple well: tall, solemn, standing high on a hill. The Temple of the Archangel (Archistratigus) Michael for several centuries was the center of spirituality for the inhabitants of the village of Troparevo, and today it fulfills the same mission for the western regions of the capital.

Where is the temple?

The village of Troparevo has always been a lively and busy crossroads of several important roads southwest of Moscow. Once belonging to the merchant Ivan Tropar, after whom it was named, it eventually became the property of the Novodevichy Convent, with whose funds the Church of the Archangel Michael was erected at the turn of the 17th–18th centuries.

  • Today Troparevo has entered the city limits, turning into the Troparevo-Nikulino district, and the temple, which is nestled in the southern side of Nikulino Park, has found its modern Moscow address: Vernadsky Avenue, building 90.
  • If you have any questions or clarifications, you can call the temple by phone: 8 (495) 4332476.

How to get to the temple?

  • The nearest station of the Moscow metro is “Yugo-Zapadnaya” (on the Sokolnicheskaya line), however, from it to the temple you will have to walk about 900 meters (this is no more than 10 minutes at a leisurely pace).
  • The choice of ground transport to get to the temple is amazing and pleasing. Buses No. 196, 420, 630, 863 go more or less regularly to the “Church of the Archangel Michael” . Buses No. E1, 66, 227, 281, 590, 611, 642 will take you the “Theater in the South-West” , 707, 718, 802, 890, as well as minibuses No. 22m, 45m, 161m, 309, 1011.

Attractions and shrines of the temple

  • St. Michael's Church is interesting for its unusual combination of architecture, characteristic of rural church architecture, and the almost luxurious design of the facade. In general, the style in which the temple was built can be attributed to the so-called “Moscow Baroque”, which was primarily characterized by a tendency towards the magnificent decoration of churches. So, even though Troparevo was once a village, the appearance of St. Michael’s Church is one hundred percent worthy of a ceremonial capital church.
  • An interesting detail catches the eye of an attentive observer when looking at the appearance of the temple: five onion domes are topped with gilded crosses with a crescent at the foot. Where did this crescent on the Orthodox cross come from and what does it mean? Some researchers see in this symbolism from the Revelation of John the Theologian, some - an image of the baptismal font or the Bethlehem manger, but the widespread belief that this is a symbol of the victory of the Christian world over the Muslim world is false.
  • The main temple mosaic icon , located to the right of the royal doors, depicts the Archangel Michael in the form of the Archangel, that is, the leader of the heavenly army, fearlessly entering into the fight against the forces of evil. Festive shades of red emphasize the feeling of confidence in the triumph of good over the machinations of the fallen angel.
  • There are many revered shrines in the temple. Among them are the icons of the Mother of God “Donskaya” and “Smolenskaya” , the icon of the holy princess Anna Kashinskaya , known for her difficult lifetime fate and posthumous ups and downs, which closely linked her name with the schism of the Russian Church, particles of the relics of the holy martyr Charalampius and St. Nicholas .

Did you know? It is in the Church of the Archangel Michael that Andrei Kuraev, a famous religious figure, philosopher, theologian, publicist and preacher, serves as a supernumerary protodeacon.

Temple of the Archangel Michael in Troparevo

An amazing red brick structure with gilded domes stands out against the urban backdrop of Moscow's high-rise buildings. The Temple of the Archangel Michael in Troparevo is located on the road to the Russian capital from Vnukovo airport. To commemorate the date of baptism in Rus' in 1988, the government transferred the church to the Moscow Patriarchate.

Story

The first mentions of the cathedral are found in the fourteenth century. It was a small village of Troparevo with a church of wooden structure. Then, at the end of the seventeenth century, a stone building was built with money from the Novodevichy Convent; the village was a profitable part of the monastery lands.

There is no information about who the architect was. But historians have come to the conclusion that the master was Startsev, who took part in the construction of the Novodevichy Convent. Judging by its appearance, we can say that the creator was a master of genius, skillfully combining Slavic and Western trends in architecture.

The period of Soviet power caused significant damage to the building. At the end of the thirties of the twentieth century, the church was closed.

note

Interior decorations were destroyed, the bells were removed, and gold and silver church attributes were confiscated. The building was used as a granary and stored the details of the Mosfilm film studio.

For fifty years the church stood without reconstruction or restoration. Only at the end of the twentieth century did restoration work begin.

Architecture

For seven centuries, the church suffered from frequent fires more than once. After another devastating fire, the Church of the Archangel Michael in Troparevo was built from brick, in which you can see details of the Novodevichy Convent. During this period, the Ukrainian style in architecture included elements of the Naryshkin Baroque. Therefore, the temple combines simple details of Russian churches with Western European architecture.

The structure of the symmetrical composition is decorated with five gilded domes. Semicircular apses at the base of the chapters give the impression of floating airiness. The corners of the cathedral are with majestic columns, the windows are decorated with white frames. Pretentiousness and originality gives the structure a unique look.

More than fifty years of neglect have made the building a dilapidated structure. As a result of the reconstructions, the foundation was strengthened, the walls were restored, the domes and crosses were updated, and the roof surface was covered. The Royal Doors were miraculously preserved in the barn; they were given to the church. One woman brought a bell as a gift, which she carefully kept throughout the years.

Troparevo, Church of the Archangel Michael

A rural temple that became a city one. Church of the Archangel Michael in Troparevo in the southwest of the capital. The first temple to be re-opened in the post-perestroika period in Moscow.

Temple in Troparevo: history

Actually, the history of the church in Troparevo is such that it was once a village that was located far outside of Moscow. The village belonged to the Novodevichy Convent for some time. Then the capital grew and Troparevo, and with it the Church of the Archangel Michael, found themselves inside the Moscow Ring Road.

Description[edit]

Everyone who sees this temple for the first time is struck by the same thought: “We expected to see anything, but... here is such a majestic and beautiful temple and in such a wilderness?! How did he end up here? It’s as if it’s from another world, it could perfectly decorate one of the capital’s streets or squares, and it doesn’t fit at all with the surrounding desert landscape! What kind of places were there like this, or is it all about Countess Anna herself - after all, she spared no expense on such a temple in the village...”

The building is made of brick with white stone details, plastered. A characteristic example of the Moscow Empire style, the massive quadrangle of the temple is completed with a large light drum resting on internal pylons.

Adjacent to the temple from the west is a two-tier bell tower with a square base and a cylindrical top. The absence of a refectory imparts a certain originality to the composition. The laconic architecture of the monument is expressive and monumental. The six-column Doric porticoes of the side facades emphasize the importance of the smooth planes of the walls, enlivened by square rustication. The interpretation of details has been simplified. The plasticity of the upper parts of the building is enriched by the tabernacles on the drum, made of wood.

The spacious and bright temple is a modification of the cross-domed structure. The elevated branches of the cross are covered with sail vaults, the lower crosses are covered with flat domes. The walls and pillars are surrounded by a wide entablature of an empire design, which, together with the archivolts of the trussed arches, reveals the tectonics of the structure.

The modern central iconostasis of the church is currently unique in type and artistic merit. Its domed rotunda on gilded fluted columns of the Corinthian order, decorated with applied carvings, is extremely beautiful. The iconostases in the chapels, from the late 1830s, are more ordinary. Flat, four-tiered, with gilded details on a white background, they are also associated with Empire art. The style features are noticeable in the design of the metal fencing of the sole. Chandeliers, icon cases and wall oil paintings – late 19th – early 20th centuries. The floor is made of stone slabs.

There is an assumption that the name of the former village, and now the Moscow district “Troparevo”, came at the end of the 14th century from the nickname of the owner of the village, boyar Ivan Mikhailovich Tropar. In 1491, the village belonged to the Sourozh merchant Foma Troparev.

Well, that's it, we have designated the scene of action. As for the Church of the Archangel Michael in Troparevo - and this is what we will talk about today - then the following emotion is probably very appropriate: to throw up your hands, slap yourself on the sides, and say: Oh, what a beauty! However, let’s leave emotions aside for a moment...

The Church of the Archangel (or Archangel) Michael in Troparevo was built on the site of an older wooden church of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael, which, judging by the surviving documents, existed here back in the 13th century. It was rebuilt twice, and at the end of the 17th century it completely burned down.

And then, at the expense of the Novodevichy Convent, which then owned the village of Troparevo, a stone church was erected in 1694. The same one that we see today. And it is possible that it was built by the same master who, at exactly the same time, worked on the construction of the Novodevichy Convent - Osip Dmitrievich Startsev.

In any case, the temple turned out to be beautiful. And extremely unusual, because it combines seemingly incompatible things.

On the one hand, in essence, it is a rural temple with its characteristic architecture, and on the other, a completely atypical, rich design of the exterior.

Important

And this combination of incompatible things resulted in a very elegant temple with joyful red tones of the facade and bright white details.

The main quadrangle of the building ends with large kokoshniks, and above them there are five miniature two-tier drums, which are crowned with octagonal domes shining in gold.

Well, another gift to us from the builders - a beautiful three-tiered tented bell tower stands nearby.

In general, we can say that the Church of the Archangel Michael bears the features of the so-called “Moscow Baroque”.

The temple, alas, closed and went bankrupt. It is especially unfortunate that the bells disappeared in the first third of the last century, of which, however, only one unique set remained, preserved by one of the local residents, returned to the temple and eventually taking its rightful place. Currently, the temple has not only been returned to the church, it has been carefully restored and has the status of a Patriarchal metochion.

Church of the Archangel Michael in Sochi. Description, history, schedule of services

Spiritual development July 13, 2018

The Church of the Archangel Michael in Sochi is the first church built in the Black Sea region. The cathedral was erected to mark the end of the Caucasian War in 1864. This article tells about this church, the history of its construction and interesting facts.

History of the temple

Historians associate the beginning of the construction of the Church of the Archangel Michael in Sochi with the order of the governor of the Caucasus, Grand Duke M. N. Romanov. General D.V. Pilenko, who was the head of the Black Sea district, played a significant role in the construction of the church. The temple was built in Dakhovsky Posad, on the site where the Navaginsky fortification had previously been.

Agronomist A.V. Vereshchagin, who was also a state councilor, acted as a developer, promising to build a temple with private funds. Initially, all design and construction work was paid for by the largest landowner of the Black Sea region, N. N. Mamontov.

The architect from Moscow A. S. Kaminsky completed the first sketches, and then the project itself for the Church of the Archangel Michael in Sochi. At the end of May 1874, the ceremonial foundation of the church was carried out.

Construction of the temple

Four years later, the construction of the stone walls of the church was completed, and an iron roof was installed in the refectory. A number of different circumstances influenced the duration of construction of the temple. Thanks to the famous philanthropist S.I. Mamontov and Count F.F. Sumarokov-Elston, the construction of the church was completed at the end of October 1890.

A year later, the Church of the Archangel Michael in Sochi was consecrated in a solemn ceremony. By the beginning of the 20th century, a spiritual center was formed around the cathedral. The parish's holdings included:

  • Parochial school.
  • A parish house with various outbuildings.
  • Garden and park complex.
  • Chapel.
  • Bell tower.
  • Plant nursery.
  • Two-story church house with an outbuilding.

This entire building and garden complex was unofficially called the Church Quarter. The completed cathedral and the complex next to it were approved by the Caucasian governorship, and were also very popular with local residents.

Temple in the 20th century

Before the October Revolution of 1917, there were approximately 20 churches, as well as several monasteries, in Sochi and the surrounding area. The changes that took place after the revolution also affected the small resort town. So, in 1929, some representatives of the new government began a campaign against the Church of the Archangel Michael in Sochi.

In mid-July 1931, the Sochi District Executive Committee decided to ban bell ringing throughout Sochi. And three years later, the complete destruction of the church was initiated.

Advice

However, this fate was avoided thanks to one of the parishioners named Alexandra. The fact is that during this period she worked in local government and designed the church and other buildings as premises suitable for storing grain.

A few years later, the temple lost its dome, cross and bell tower tent. Then all the premises of the cathedral were turned into warehouses.

Revival of the Church

In 1943, the return of churches, cathedrals and monasteries to the Russian Orthodox Church began in the USSR. Gradually, parish life began to be restored in these institutions. At the beginning of November 1943, according to the new schedule of services, the first service was held in the Church of the Archangel Michael in Sochi.

The rector of the church, Archpriest Alexander, together with his parishioners, began to restore the temple that same year. The dome was rebuilt, a cross was installed on it, and the bell tent was restored. The temple was returned to part of its former possessions on Mayachnaya and Ordzhonikidze streets.

In 1981, the cathedral and all buildings on its territory were recognized as historical and architectural monuments and placed under state protection. In 1990, a Sunday school for children and adults began operating at the cathedral. In the period from 1992 to 1994, restoration was carried out, after which the temple acquired its original appearance.

In 1996, a new temple complex was built next to the church, which included the Cathedral of the Iveron Icon of Our Lady. Administrative buildings and several buildings for various purposes appeared.
