Makhachkala diocese

  • Throne: Archangel Michael
  • Address: Russia, 366000, Grozny, A. Kadyrov Ave., 21
  • On the map: Yandex.Map, Google map

Located in the city center.
The temple was built by Terek Cossacks in 1892. Effective as of December 1981. Before the Chechen war it was painted mainly in red and burgundy colors.

It was almost completely destroyed during the first and second Chechen wars: in January 1995 the dome collapsed, and during the second campaign the church was destroyed by air raids. Three of its abbots were kidnapped in 1996-1999 - two were killed, one was released as a result of a special operation. However, even during the fighting, worship services did not stop in the basement of the temple. As a result of the stabilization of the situation, the few remaining Orthodox residents here - about a thousand mostly Russian people - were given the opportunity to revive their religious life.

Since 2004, restoration work has been carried out with funds from the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation, Gosstroy and other sponsors. The work was carried out by 42 builders, of whom only two were Orthodox, and the rest were Muslims.

On Easter, April 23, 2006, the temple was reopened for worship.
The consecration of the restored temple on November 21 of the same year was performed by Archbishop of Stavropol Feofan (Ashurkov). However, to fully complete the decoration of the temple in accordance with the canons of the church, additional funds were required. Ramzan Kadyrov, after opening the main mosque named after Akhmat Kadyrov in the center of Grozny, ordered help to the Orthodox church. Restoration began at the end of 2008. During these works, the blue domes of the temple were gilded, and the blue walls were painted white with red trim.

On April 26, 2009, Archbishop of Stavropol Feofan (Ashurkov) consecrated the restored temple.

On May 19, 2021, during an all-night vigil, four armed young men - three from Chechnya, one from a neighboring region - shouting “Allahu Akbar” attacked the temple, as a result of which parishioner Artemy and two policemen (Vladimir Gorskov, Orthodox, and Kairat) were killed Rakhmetov, a Muslim), another parishioner and two law enforcement officers were injured. The actions of the police and parishioners prevented large casualties. During the special operation, the attackers were eliminated on the spot [1].

Michael the Archangel Church in Grozny

Temple of the Archangel Michael (Grozny)[edit]

The temple was founded at the end of the 19th century by Terek Cossacks. The temple was founded in 1868; according to available diocesan information, it was built in 1890 and consecrated in 1892. It was built from natural stone using public donations. Upon completion of construction it is permanently operational.

Before the start of the first Chechen war, it was one of two operating Orthodox churches in the Chechen-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

Historically, the complex included a three-domed church in the Russian style with an attached bell tower, a fence with a gate (this architectural ensemble is protected by the state), a stone two-story church (parish) house with a basement, a parish school, a boiler room and auxiliary premises.

A temple complex has been opened in Grozny, which includes a mosque and an Orthodox church

Russia's first temple complex consisting of an Orthodox church and a mosque was opened today in Grozny. Both buildings are the same height and capacity. Between them is a memorial sign with quotes from the Gospel and the Koran. The unique project has become a symbol of the unity of two religions and the cohesion of peoples.

There is one road leading to the mosque and the church. Just a year ago there was a small wooden chapel in this place in disrepair. Then the servicemen of the 46th brigade asked to restore it. The head of the republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, gave the go-ahead, and the reconstruction of the chapel turned into a project for the first temple complex in Russia. Its main buildings differ in style and architecture, but create a unified whole.

“The opening of a unique temple complex is an event that demonstrates the unity of two religions and the cohesion of multinational Russia. Islam and Christianity call for love and respect for every person, and we declare that no one will be able to cause hatred between us,” said the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov.

“I want to thank everyone who is involved in this temple complex and its construction. I congratulate the personnel of the National Guard troops, I congratulate the Chechen people on this bright and memorable day. I would like to wish you prosperity, a happy and peaceful life on the eve of the New Year,” congratulated the director of the Russian Guard, Viktor Zolotov.

The church was named in honor of the holy noble prince Daniel of Moscow. The nuclear submarine of the Russian Northern Fleet also bears his name. He is one of the patrons of the Armed Forces. And the mosque was named after Mavladi Visaitov, a hero of the Soviet Union who reached Germany during the Great Patriotic War.

Both churches were built by workers of different faiths who came from different Russian regions. There were even specialists from the Far East. The mosque and the church are the same height - 25 meters. They can accommodate up to two hundred people.

The first prayers in churches have already been said. The military personnel came with their families to the opening and dedication ceremony. They pray for their family, loved ones and comrades. And it doesn’t matter who adheres to what religion. They have been living side by side for many years and serving together.

“I ask the Almighty for the repose of the souls of those who have passed on to another world, for the health of our parents, for the health of all our brothers, both Christians and Muslims,” said sanitary instructor of the sapper group Kamran Mirzabekov.

“Of course, faith raises morale, because faith comes from within. Before any departure for combat missions, now you can pray for everyone with whom you will go shoulder to shoulder,” says the commander of the engineering department, Alexander Isaev.

About 400 servicemen of the brigade were awarded military orders and medals. There are also heroes of Russia among them. And in the future, parish schools will open in the temple complex for military children.

Temple of St. Prince Demetrius Donskoy (Khankala)[edit]

On October 26, 2008, Bishop of Stavropol and Vladikavkaz Feofan (Ashurkov) performed the rite of consecration of the temple in the name of the Holy Blessed Grand Duke Demetrius Donskoy. The temple was built at the location of the United Group of Forces in Khankala, a suburb of the city of Grozny, where the Operational Group of Internal Affairs Units of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs is located, where police officers sent from various regions of Russia serve.

The Minister of Internal Affairs of those years, Rashid Nurgaliev, attended the ceremony.

Bishop Feofan thanked the authorities for their assistance in the construction of the military temple and read out the welcoming address of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Rus'.

On March 1, 2009, the dean of the Grozny church district, Abbot Varlaam (Ponomarev), performed the rite of consecration of the bells in the Church of St. Demetrius of Donskoy on the territory of the United Group of Forces in the North Caucasus region in Khankala. The small belfry, numbering six bells, was donated to the temple by the bell foundry.

The interior of the temple has been partially restored.

At night, the lights of the Church of the Archangel Michael are visible far away.

As it turned out, Grozny is not such a backward and destroyed city as many ordinary people believe. Having recovered after difficult years of struggle and devastation, it has flourished, so it can attract tourists with its features.

Church of the Nativity of Christ (Naurskaya)[edit]

On April 24, 2021, on the day of the celebration of the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, the grand opening of a new church in honor of the Nativity of Christ took place with the participation of Bishop Varlaam of Makhachkala and Grozny and Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov.

The temple was built on the site of the village wooden church, destroyed in 1936.

The new temple, 33 meters high and with a capacity of about 500 parishioners, was erected by specialists from Yekaterinburg under the tutelage of the head of the Russian Copper Company, Igor Altushkin. The iconostasis was painted by the nuns of the Novo-Tikhvin convent in Yekaterinburg.

The domes of the church are covered with real gold leaf. The temple has an electronic bell ringer, which can be controlled using the SMS function on a mobile phone.

Before this, the Orthodox parish was located in the former club building.

On March 4, 2021, on Saturday of the first week of Great Lent and the day of remembrance of the Great Martyr Theodore Tiron, Bishop Varlaam of Makhachkala and Grozny performed the rite of the great consecration of the temple in honor of the Nativity of Christ.

Church of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara (Shelkovskaya)[edit]

In July 2007, the leadership of the Chechen Republic announced their intention to build an Orthodox church in the village. The Church of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara operating in Shelkovskaya is, in fact, a house of prayer.

In 2021, the village is preparing to celebrate its 300th anniversary. The opening of a new church of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara will be timed to coincide with this significant date, the construction of which began in 2021 with the support of the republican authorities and the National Association of Timber Industry “Russian Forest”.

On April 22, 2021, Bishop Varlaam, in a solemn atmosphere, performed a prayer service with the rite of consecrating the foundation stone of the church in honor of the Holy Great Martyr Barbara on the shore of the lake in Shelkovskaya.

Also, on behalf of the Head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov, Bishop Varlaam was given a gift of an ark containing a particle of the relics of the Great Martyr Barbara.

Grozny City

Grozny City is a complex of high-rise buildings in the center of Grozny.

Construction of the Grozny City complex in Chechnya began only in 2007.

Here in Grozny there are seven high-rise buildings: one 40-story, one 30-story, three 28-story and two 18-story. By Russian standards, these are practically skyscrapers.

Hotel "Grozny City" 5 stars.

You can book a room in many booking systems. To find the best price, we use the hotellook hotel search engine. Although sometimes we still book on agode.

Business - 28 floors, 120 meters.

To get up here I had to part with the excursion for some time. Most excursions to Grozny from Zheleznovodsk take a route that includes a visit to the Akhmat Arena football stadium and a climb to the Grozny City observation deck, but do not visit Magas and Argun. I chose the option with Argun, I really wanted to see the Aimani Kadyrova mosque, and the climb to the observation deck was promised to me by the owner of the travel agency, who actually acted as a guide.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (Assinovskaya)[edit]

The village of Assinovskaya was founded in 1847 on the site of the former Chechen village of Ekha-Borze.

The temple was one of the first built on the territory of the Stavropol-Baku diocese, built through the efforts of the Cossacks.

In the summer of 1992, during the First Chechen Campaign, a pogrom was committed in the St. Nicholas Church: about 30 raiders smashed utensils, shot icons from machine guns, and severely beat the rector, Hieromonk Anthony (Danilov). In 2002 the temple was burned.

In 2013, the church building was completely restored externally with the support of the republican authorities, but inside there are white walls and there is no altar. On the patronal feast day, a clergyman from another parish comes to the temple and performs a prayer service.

The parish is cared for by the dean of the Grozny church district, Priest Sergius Abasov.

What you can see in Grozny

Coming to the main city of Chechnya, every tourist can choose the most suitable places to relax and get acquainted with the culture of the people:

  1. Those who love sports will have an interesting time at the Akhmad Arena, a modern stadium (the largest in Chechnya). Here you can not only look at everything from the outside, but also use the services of a guide and go on an excursion inside the complex.
  2. The Church of the Archangel Michael is a magnificent place where you can cleanse your soul and feel the aura of strength and prayer of the church, which did not stop working both during the years of the USSR and during the period of military confrontation.
  3. From Grozny you can go on an excursion to Tsoi-Pede. This is a real city of the dead, located practically on the Russian-Georgian border. In this regard, in order to visit it, it is necessary to fill out papers with the FSB. 42 crypts, two sanctuaries and two watchtowers create a complex that fascinates with its mystical aura.
  4. The “Running Wave” dancing fountain is surprising because it was the very first created on Russian territory. Several individual water bowls together make up a composition that is as much as 180 meters long. It is located opposite the “Heart of Chechnya” mosque, delighting the eyes of residents and tourists after dark.

Church of the Great Martyr George the Victorious (Chervlennaya)[edit]

In one of the oldest villages in the Caucasus, Chervlennaya, in the Chechen Republic, construction of an Orthodox church began in 2010 with the support of military personnel of the North Caucasus Regional Command of the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia (commander personally).

The temple received the name of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious, the patron saint of the Russian army.

The construction of the temple caused great enthusiasm among the Orthodox population of Chervlennaya, where there had been no temple since it was destroyed by the atheistic regime.

In 2011, Abbot Varlaam (Ponomarev) consecrated the temple with the priestly rite.

The temple is made of logs, wooden.
