Temple of Fyodor Ushakov in Perovo today
The Temple of Fyodor Ushakov in Perovo, consecrated in 2014 in honor of the famous Russian naval commander Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, is located at the intersection of Kuskovskaya and Perovskaya streets. In 2000, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized Admiral Ushakov, who lived in the 2nd half of the 18th and early 19th centuries, for his righteous military valor and services to Russia. During the Russian-Turkish War, he commanded the naval forces and did not lose a single battle. Fyodor Ushakov ended his life as a monk.

The call of His Holiness the Patriarch on the need to build churches within walking distance of parishioners, so that life becomes better, was heard by civil society and the Moscow Government. The capital adopted a special program for the construction of 2 hundred churches. It provided for the construction of a temple for 300 people in Perovo in honor of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir.
On the territory allocated for construction, in one of the parks that had fallen into disrepair, a small church was built as a temporary church facility, accommodating about 100 people. It became not only a place of spiritual purification, but also a kind of cultural center for Muscovites living nearby.

Icon of the Mother of God “Three-Handed”
In the temporary church located on the site of the construction of the temple of the holy righteous warrior Fyodor Ushakov in South Butovo there is a revered image of the Mother of God called “Three-Handed”. First of all, the temporary temple itself, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', was consecrated by His Grace Irinarch, Bishop of Krasnogorsk, Vicar of the Most Holy Patriarch, Administrator of the South-Western Moscow Vicariate in honor of this holy Icon. Therefore, veneration of this image is natural for the parishioners of the temple, and the day of his memory is the patronal holiday of the temple.
Icon of the Mother of God “Vsetsaritsa”
The Icon of the Mother of God “The Tsaritsa” is one of the most revered Athonite icons of the Mother of God. Those who wish can venerate the shrine during a special prayer service to the holy Admiral with special petitions for the construction of a new church after the Divine Liturgy on Sundays. Icon of the Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon
The icon of the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon was solemnly approved on October 7, 2012 on the wall of a temporary church built on the site of the construction of the temple of the holy righteous warrior Fyodor Ushakov. It was made on the holy Mount Athos, purchased by a zealous parishioner and donated to the temple. The icon was consecrated on Mount Athos on the relics of the great martyr and many other saints, and its donation to the temple was blessed by the monks of Mount Athos.
Icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear”
A great spiritual connection exists between Mount Athos and Russia. Many holy icons of the Mother of God, which originally appeared on Mount Athos, are especially revered and became famous for their miracles and signs in Rus'. Among them is an amazing image of the Queen of Heaven called “Quick to Hear.” The very name of this icon tells us that the Mother of God lovingly accepts our prayers and soon intercedes for us before Her Divine Son. A special spiritual connection exists between the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in Yasenevo and the Church of the holy righteous warrior Fyodor Ushakov under construction in South Butovo. Evidence of this connection was the temporary temple in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear,” which was at the beginning of the construction of the temple in Yasenevo and was moved to the construction site of the temple in South Butovo. So the temporary temple became a connecting spiritual thread between the two parishes, both communities. In the temporary church there is a wonderful image of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear”, which was prayed to by the believers of Yasenev, filled with the spirit of their zeal and faith, which should be transmitted to the believers of Butovo and motivate them to their spiritual feat - the construction of the temple of God.
Icon of the Blessed Matrona of Moscow with a particle of her holy relics
In the temporary church, built on the site of the construction of the temple of the righteous warrior Fyodor Ushakov, there is an icon with a particle of the relics of the blessed elder Matrona of Moscow, ardently revered by the entire Orthodox world. Believers of South Butovo have the happy opportunity to constantly turn in prayer to this great saint of God, asking for her immediate help in various circumstances of earthly life, but first of all, in strengthening faith and establishing a genuine Christian life.
Icon of the Mother of God “Inexhaustible Chalice”
In the temporary church, built on the site of the construction of the temple of the holy righteous warrior Fyodor Ushakov, for the prayerful worship of believers there is an image of the Mother of God called the “Inexhaustible Chalice”. This holy icon was painted and consecrated in the Serpukhov Vysotsky Monastery near the “Inexhaustible Chalice” image of the Queen of Heaven, revered throughout Rus'.
History of construction
The Moscow authorities identified the land for the construction of the future temple of Prince Vladimir after numerous appeals from citizens over the course of 7 years. During this time, the petition was signed by more than 6 thousand people.
Temporary Church
In the spring of 2014, a small temporary church was erected within a month in an abandoned park on the site of future construction. It was assembled from a finished wooden frame. In mid-April, the church was consecrated in honor of the righteous warrior Fyodor Ushakov. Immediately, services, baptisms of children, weddings of young couples and other church ceremonies began there. The church became a place for collecting public donations for the construction of the future temple.
Milestones of the main temple construction
At the end of 2015, a worship cross appeared in honor of the construction of a new temple, and donations began to arrive. Construction of the temple began only in the spring of 2021. In April, Bishop Panteleimon of Orekhovo-Zuevsky consecrated the foundation stone.
Today the façade is being finished; after the financial support issues are resolved, the necessary communications will be installed.
The future of the temporary wooden church
After the rite of consecration of the main temple, the temporary wooden church of Fyodor Ushakov will remain part of the Patriarchal Compound of the Church of Grand Duke Vladimir. Church rituals that do not require the presence of a large number of people will continue to be performed there.

* * *
On April 19, 2013, by decree of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', a Patriarchal metochion was established at the church of the holy righteous warrior Theodore Ushakov under construction in the South Butovo district of the South-Western administrative district of Moscow. On January 29, 2013, by Patriarchal decree, Abbot Damian (Zaletov) was appointed rector of the temple.
By the beginning of 2013, on the territory allocated for construction, a temporary temple was built in honor of the “Three-Handed” icon of the Mother of God, where the constant celebration of the Divine Liturgy began. In 2021, by resolution of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, the temporary church was abolished.
Construction of the temple complex of the righteous warrior Theodore Ushakov began on January 1, 2015. By January 1, 2021, construction work was completed and the decoration of the temple began.
On April 15, 2015, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill performed the rite of consecration of the foundation stone for the foundation of the temple under construction.
The construction of the temple complex was carried out in difficult conditions: at an early stage of the work, the main developer unexpectedly went bankrupt. The main construction was completed thanks to the significant efforts and assistance of the Military Counterintelligence Department of the FSB of Russia and the Interregional Public Organization of Military Counterintelligence Veterans of the FSB of the Russian Federation.
The central altar of the temple was consecrated in honor of the righteous warrior Theodore Ushakov. In Southern Butovo, a street, central boulevard and metro station are named in honor of the righteous warrior Feodor Ushakov. There is also a monument to the admiral, near which the clergy and parishioners of the temple regularly perform prayer services and celebrate holidays related to the pages of the biography of this famous admiral.
The lower altar of the temple is dedicated to St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, wonderworker. The day of remembrance of St. Nicholas (December 19) is the Day of Military Counterintelligence of the Russian Federation, and the next day (December 20) is the Day of the Security Agencies of the Russian Federation.
With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, the military temple of Righteous Theodore is a place of remembrance for soldiers of state security agencies who gave their lives in the performance of their official duty.
The temple was erected within the framework of the Program for the construction of Orthodox churches in Moscow with the support of the Interregional public organization “Veterans of Military Counterintelligence” and the Council of Veterans of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation.
The temple has five domes and is designed for 500 parishioners. The project was developed by JSC MNIITEP in the traditions of Vladimir-Suzdal architecture. Work on the decoration of the temple has been underway since the beginning of construction.
Clergy, mentors
Since 2012, the rector of the Patriarchal Compound of the Church of Grand Duke Vladimir has been Archpriest Alexy Batanogov (erected to the rank of archpriest in 2010). He is a native Muscovite, has a higher theological education, and in 2015 was awarded the medal of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir.
Priests Malevich Kirill Borisovich, candidate of theology, and Sergeychikov Alexander Alexandrovich, who graduated from the Theological Academy, are clergy of the temple. The regular priest of the temple is Alexander Makarov, who has a higher theological education.
Parish and choir of the temple
The Church of Fyodor Ushakov at the Patriarchal Compound in Perovo united the laity and church servants living nearby. Parishioners not only participate in divine services and sacraments, but also collectively carry out the obediences assigned to the temple. They engage in charitable activities by holding “Day of Exchange of Things”, “Fair of Taste” or distributing discounted tickets; actively participate in events, festivals and celebrations held by the parish.
A “Parish Bulletin” is published for residents of the microdistrict, and parishioners write blogs with useful information on the church website. In the Parish House (Perovskaya St., 66, building 3), life is in full swing every day, in which adults and children take an active part.
The youth choir under the direction of regent Maria Khayarova (tel.) sings:
- early Sunday Liturgies;
- prayer services;
- Akafests;
- funeral litias;
- grandeur.
“Public singing” is practiced in the temple.
Social work, everyday life
According to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, a strong and effective social ministry is being created in the Russian Orthodox Church. Proof of this is the activity of the temple of Fyodor Ushakov.
The life of the parish outside the walls of the church is filled with good deeds, creative work, it went beyond the church fence:
- Thanks to the efforts of parishioners, the park, which was once in disrepair, is being transformed.
- Parishioners, who are experts in their field, conduct lectures, thematic conversations and discussions about the fundamentals of faith, and consultations on legal issues.
- Free classical music concerts “Voice of the Soul” have become traditional, in which not only amateur parishioners, but also professional musicians take part. The Beryozka cinema provides its hall for these concerts.
- A film club has been created in the Parish House (Perovskaya St., 66, building 3), where famous film directors are invited and films are discussed.
- A shipbuilding club operates at the workshops of a neighboring school. The temple organizes ship model competitions, and a special prize has been established for the winners.
- The theater-studio “100 Friends” puts on interesting performances on religious themes.
- Children study in Sunday school at the temple.
- Thematic holidays, festivals, and pilgrimage trips have become a tradition.
- To help those in need, the “Day of Sharing Things” is traditionally held, and assistance is regularly provided to the sick at the St. Alexis Hospital.
A large number of volunteers take part in the daily life of the parish.
Cathedral of St. Theodore Ushakov
Construction of the building in the Empire style with a Byzantine dome was completed in 2006. Built in honor of Admiral Fyodor Ushakov, canonized in 2001. Accommodates up to three thousand people. The cathedral named in his honor was not erected on Mordovian soil by chance. Here, in the Sanaksar monastery, the uncle of the Russian naval commander, the Venerable Theodore of Sanaksar, served in the world Ivan Ignatievich Ushakov. It was the brethren of the Sanaksar monastery that subsequently influenced the canonization of Admiral Ushakov. The cathedral itself is one of the most impressive religious buildings in Russia at the beginning of the 21st century. It is made in the Russian Empire style, painted in a light azure color, characteristic of Russian cathedrals of the 18th–19th centuries and surprisingly in harmony with the gilded domes and light white columns of the temple. The height of the cathedral is 62 m: the cross on the central dome reaches this mark. Four elegant belfries house 12 bells - the special pride of the temple. All of them were cast using ancient technologies in the city of Tutaev, Yaroslavl region. The largest one weighs 6 tons. Among the features of the temple's layout, the observation deck is located around the central drum on which the main dome rests. From here, from a height of 40 meters, you can admire the panorama of the city of Saransk. In the basement of the cathedral there is a baptismal church with a font, into which not only a child, but also an adult can easily immerse. Inside the temple itself, the main attention is drawn to the magnificent iconostasis of the central border. It is made by the hands of Saransk craftsmen from valuable types of wood, covered with skillful carvings and elegantly decorated with gilding. The border itself is consecrated in honor of the righteous warrior Theodore Ushakov. Fedor Ushakov, whose name has gone down in Russian history as one of the most respected, is the glory of Russian weapons. The most important victories of the Russian fleet are associated with this name, and the life path of Fyodor Fedorovich serves as an example of true perseverance, hard work and valor. The future admiral was born on February 13, 1745 (according to other sources - 1744) into a poor noble family of a retired sergeant of the Preobrazhensky Life Guards Regiment Fyodor Ignatievich Ushakov. The family lived in the village of Burnakovo, Yaroslavl province. Fyodor Ushakov's early years of study were spent in his homeland, at a school for noble offspring, where he learned to read and write. Since childhood, he dreamed of becoming a sailor, although there was no one in the family who had anything to do with the sea. My father cherished the dream of sending his heir to the Preobrazhensky Regiment, but the poor nobleman could not afford guards service. So at the age of 16, Fyodor Ushakov’s dream of the sea began to come true - in 1761 he was enrolled in the capital’s Naval Cadet Corps. Ushakov was a diligent, good student, studied marine science with enthusiasm, and especially loved mathematics, history and navigation. In 1766, Fyodor Ushakov received the rank of midshipman, took the oath and became a sailor of the Baltic Fleet. Having shown himself to be an excellent and diligent sailor, Ushakov was transferred to the Azov Fleet. The service took place on various ships guarding the mouth of the Don. Here Ushakov commands the semi-frigate Modon, participates in reconnaissance flights, and protects the Black Sea shores and fortresses from Turkish landings. In 1776, as captain of the frigate “St. Paul,” Ushakov went on an expedition to the Mediterranean Sea, and four years later stood on the captain’s bridge of the imperial yacht “Standard.” However, Fyodor Fedorovich spent only two months in the honorary position and asked to be transferred from court service to the real fleet. About the reasons for the transfer, he wrote to Potemkin: “To your lordship, I dare to frankly explain in warning that I have an excellent hunt and always wish to be at sea rather than in the harbor...” The request was granted, and Ushakov returned to the navy to decorate the pages of its history the most important episodes for the entire country. In 1778, just above the mouth of the Dnieper River, as part of the implementation of Catherine II’s plan to create a regular linear Black Sea Fleet, the construction of the port city of Kherson began. After five years, captain of the second rank Fyodor Ushakov is appointed here as commander of ship No. 4 and receives his first award. The young captain received the Order of St. Vladimir, 4th degree, not for military merit, but for his contribution to the fight against the plague epidemic that was raging in the Kherson region. The sailors under his command managed to defeat the disease four months earlier than others thanks to advanced methods of combating the disease. Fyodor Ushakov established a strict quarantine regime - the entire team was sent to the steppe, divided into artels, housed in separate tents made of reeds. When signs of illness appeared inside the artel, the patient was moved to a separate tent, the old one was burned, and its remaining residents were placed under quarantine. Ushakov personally monitored compliance with the regime, prohibited any contact between artels and did not resort to the help of an overcrowded military hospital even at critical moments. The award for the selfless saving of human lives on land in a peaceful environment became the first in Fyodor Ushakov’s track record. Along with the award came a promotion to captain of the first rank. In 1785, Ushakov was actively involved in the organization of the Black Sea Fleet and the direct training of newcomers. Known for his perseverance and hard work, the first thing the captain achieved was a thorough knowledge of the naval regulations and discipline, followed by painstaking and systematic training in ship service. Subsequently, the name “Ushakov’s school” was assigned to the training system. It is very important,” Ushakov wrote in his instructions, “to train servants to quickly and efficiently control the sails, to pick up and release them, and especially to take reefs with extreme and all possible efficiency, and besides, it is necessary to be thrifty so as not to tear the sails... I recommend it to gentlemen commanders in training officers and servants should have their own supervision and give instructions to each, in due course, about what.” Ushakov made special demands on officers: they were required to be quick in making decisions and assessing the situation, coordinated in carrying out orders and fearless. “If you’re scared, you’re half defeated,” Ushakov often repeated Suvorov’s famous saying. Ushakov can rightfully be called the founder of the national tactical school in the art of naval combat. He brilliantly demonstrated his principles of combat and his belief in the power of personal courage in everyone despite the circumstances during the Russian-Turkish War of 1787–1791. Under his command, the Russian fleet won more than one daring victory. Fyodor Fedorovich allowed decisive maneuvers in close proximity to the enemy, without fear he placed his flagship in the vanguard, took dangerous blows, which excellently motivated his sailors to display personal courage. In almost every battle of the Russian-Turkish campaign, the fleet under the command of Ushakov accomplished the impossible. Thus, during the battle of Fidonisi Island, Turkish forces outnumbered ours by more than twice (550 Russian guns versus 1,120 Turkish). Despite this, the Russian sailors managed to put the enemy to flight and inflict serious damage on the enemy flagship. During the Battle of Kerch, Ushakov gave the order to shoot at the enemy from a range of grape shot, which requires getting as close as possible to the enemy. The high-speed Turkish squadron managed to escape, but the Turks' confidence in their strength decreased. In August 1790, a battle took place near Cape Tendra, which brought Ushakov especially wide fame. The total enemy losses exceeded two thousand people. “Our people, thanks to God, gave the Turks so much pepper that they liked it. Thanks to Fedor Fedorovich,” Potemkin wrote about the battle. Empress Catherine II also noted the event in her notes: “Today is Sunday. I ordered a prayer service to be served to the sound of volleys from 101 cannons, and at my table with 288 cutlery we drank the health of the victorious Black Sea Fleet and its Rear Admiral Ushakov. He will receive for the third battle during this summer St. George of the second degree, and this will be the first with the rank of major general to be awarded St. George of this degree; In addition, I will give him land. This is how we reward those who serve the state well...” With the advent of peace, Ushakov plunged into work on the construction of Sevastopol - he managed the construction of piers, barracks, and hospitals. Under Paul I, Fyodor Ushakov's career reached its brilliant peak. He was appointed commander of the Russian navy in the Mediterranean, where Russia supported the anti-French coalition. During this campaign (1798–1800), Ushakov showed himself not only as a great naval commander, but also as a skilled diplomat and politician, achieving conditions favorable to the Russian crown. In 1799, Fyodor Fedorovich was deservedly promoted to admiral. With the accession of Alexander I to the throne, the attitude towards military policy changed radically. The fleet was increasingly considered a burdensome luxury, and former heroes were written off. The merits of Admiral Ushakov turned out to be unclaimed, and he was appointed to an insultingly low position, and then completely dismissed. Fyodor Ushakov spent the last years of his life on his estate, where he became a major philanthropist, donating a lot to the church, and especially to the Sanaksarsky monastery - the monastery of his uncle. At the age of 72, on October 2, 1817, Fyodor Fedorovich Ushakov passed away. Along with Suvorov, Ushakov is a key figure in the military history of Russia, a true example of true courage, dedication, and patriotism. All these qualities brought Ushakov 11 different military awards both in Russia and abroad. During the Great Patriotic War, the admiral's merits and personal qualities were immortalized in another award named in his honor - the famous naval commander's Order of Ushakov. Since 1944, the order has been awarded to officers of the Navy for their initiative and determination during battle, as well as for victory over an enemy outnumbered while maintaining the combat effectiveness of their own forces. But Fyodor Ushakov went down in history not only with his courage and talent as a military leader. Philanthropy and true nobility are the qualities that the admiral was remembered by those around him. The “Act on the canonization of the righteous Feodor Ushakov” says: “The strength of his Christian spirit was manifested not only by glorious victories in battles for the Fatherland, but also in great mercy, which even the enemy he defeated was amazed... the mercy of Admiral Feodor Ushakov covered everyone; he was truly a mourner of the people's needs: the subordinate sailors and officers, all the suffering and dispossessed who turned to him, and all the peoples he liberated outside Russia. And he did good to everyone in any way he could, and the people repaid him a hundredfold in return with love. At the same time, he was an ascetic of great virtues, an intercessor and representative for the Russian army.

The rector of the temple under construction, Abbot Damian (Zaletov), announced this today, December 15, at a meeting in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. After the consecration, the cross will be erected on the central dome.
The service will be led by Bishop Theophylact of Dmitrov, administrator of the South-Western Vicariate, abbot of the St. Andrew's Stavropegic Monastery in Moscow.
Representatives of state security agencies and the veteran organization of the Counterintelligence Department, which are overseeing the construction of the temple, will take part in the celebrations.
It is planned to consecrate the cross and two main bells (240 kg and 120 kg) with commemorative inscriptions. The largest message is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the repose of the righteous warrior Theodore Ushakov. The second is the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Russian state security agencies.

The hero of the Russian fleet, the invincible admiral Fyodor Ushakov, is especially revered in the Yuzhnoye Butovo region, where a boulevard, a metro station, and a bust are named after the great naval commander. The memory of the saint was crowned with the construction of an Orthodox church, which is dedicated to all sailors and soldiers, defenders of the Fatherland. Among the parishioners there are many military sailors. On all the Days of Military Glory of Russia - from the Battle of Kulikovo to the Battle of Stalingrad - the parish, together with the leadership of the district, organizes large-scale celebrations.

The Temple of Fyodor Ushakov, erected in Perovo as a temporary structure, became an integral permanent part of the Patriarchal Compound - a temple in honor of the holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir. This happened thanks to the active work of parishioners and clergy in religious and cultural life, which is a living example of creation for the benefit of people.

Story
The history of the construction of the temple began in 2007.
The old church could not accommodate those wishing to attend the service, and several religious activists appealed to the secular authorities with a request to allocate space for the construction of a new church. They spent seven years seeking permission to build. We collected 6,000 signatures on the appeal and went to the offices of officials, but to no avail. Only after the start of the capital’s “200 temples” program, in 2014, was land allocated for the future temple. The site was identified in an abandoned park, and a small wooden church was immediately erected on this site, dedicating it to the holy righteous warrior Theodore.
This church can accommodate several dozen people and has temporary status. The Vladimir Church is being built nearby, but even after construction is completed, the wooden church will remain, having passed into the status of a small temple.
The church is small, single-domed, single-altar. The architecture reproduces the Greek style of church architecture. They built the temple from a finished log house, starting the installation on March 16, and on April 18 it was already consecrated.
Temple as a cultural center
Now the temple has become a kind of cultural center. It all started with a charity concert at a construction site, organized with the blessing of Bishop Panteleimon. Unexpectedly, it turned out that there were more people willing to take part than planned, and there was no time to give everyone the opportunity to speak. Therefore, the concert was repeated, and then the event became a tradition.
Classical music concerts are held by parishioners, they are absolutely free, but professional musicians, even from the Bolshoi Theater, already take part in them.
When discussing future construction, activists promised local residents to clean up and improve the park, on the territory of which land had been allocated. Parishioners make their own flower beds, plant trees, and maintain order. And if earlier it was scary to enter this park, now it has become much cleaner, the number of homeless and antisocial individuals who previously chose the thickets of bushes has decreased.
In honor of the heavenly patron
The temple was consecrated in honor of the holy righteous warrior, famous naval commander, Admiral Ushakov.
Paying tribute to the saint’s earthly journey, a ship-making circle operates at the church. Labor training classes have been preserved in the neighboring school. We agreed with a teacher from the Ship Modeling Federation, and twice a week the boys receive modeling skills. In the summer of 2015, a boat model competition was held in the park pond, and the church established a special cup for the winner in honor of St. Theodore Ushakov.
