Established on March 31, 2009 by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, being separated from the Smolensk Church.
On October 21, 2021, the independent Chernyakhov diocese was separated from the Kaliningrad diocese, as a result of which Kaliningrad remained under the jurisdiction of the Kaliningrad diocese; Ladushkinsky, Mamonovsky, Pionersky, Svetlovsky, Yantarny urban districts, as well as Bagrationovsky, Baltiysky, Guryevsky, Zelenogradsky, Ozersky and Svetlogorsk districts of the Kaliningrad region. At the same time, the Kaliningrad diocese was determined to be the center of the newly established Kaliningrad Metropolis.
