Holy Martyr Zinaida Name Day

It’s a pity, but today, in our time, the name Zinaida has lost its attractiveness, but it was once very popular. Starting a detailed study of the topic: “Zinaida: name day, the meaning of the name”, let’s start with the fact that from the ancient Greek language this word is translated as “belonging to Zeus”, “born of Zeus” or “divine daughter”. However, if we talk about church representatives, then this was the name of a close relative of the Apostle Paul, who was canonized and was known as Zinaida of Tarsus. There was another Christian martyr - Zinaida of Caesarea, the Wonderworker. We'll talk about them a little below.

Saint Zinaida: name day and martyrdom

Unfortunately, little is known about the life of Saint Zinaida of Caesarea. She was a Palestinian martyr and wonderworker who suffered death approximately in the years 284 - 305, when people were subjected to terrible torture for preaching the teachings of Christ. They were eventually burned at the stake, executed by beheading or crucifixion. The life and death of Zinaida of Caesarea is associated with other Christian martyrs - Mary, Kyriacia, Kaleria. Saint Zinaida, whose name day is celebrated on June 7 (20), like many Christian martyrs, did not renounce faith in Christ, even despite all the difficult trials that befell her. And the more people were executed, the more they were converted.

Early Christian saint

Another famous holy martyr, Zinaida of Tarsus, lived in the first century. She preached Christianity and practiced medicine. She was brutally stoned, but more on that later. Orthodox people celebrate the name day of Zinaida of Tarsia on October 11 (24).

So, according to the lives of the saints, Zinaida and her sister Philonila were natives of the city of Tarsus in the Cilician region, which was located in Asia Minor (now modern Turkey) and were close relatives of the Apostle Paul. He originally bore the name Saul and was not one of the twelve apostles, and in his early youth he was even a persecutor of the first Christians. However, after meeting the resurrected Jesus Christ, his views changed, and he accepted the apostolic mission. Thanks to him, many Christian communities were created in Asia Minor and the Balkan Peninsula. He was to write down the main texts of Christian theology, which form a significant part of the Gospel.

ZINAIDA AND FILONILLA

[Greek Martyrs of Tarsus (Comm. Oct. 11). According to the lengthy anonymous Greek. Life (BHG, N 1883), Z., leaving her sister, settled in a cave on a mountain located in the north of Demetrias near the city of Tarsus (now Tarsus, Turkey), where she led a hermit’s life, healed the sick and those possessed by unclean spirits, anointing them with oil . When the rumor about Z. spread throughout the surrounding area, 3 pious men came to her for instructions - Pappus, Pater and Philokir. Having settled near Z., the hermits prayed and healed people. Then, together with Z., they went to preach in neighboring villages (the author of the Life cites the words of the sermon and 2 prayers pronounced by Z.). One day Z. heard that some people wanted to report them to the authorities, and began to dissuade her companions from traveling to Tarsus, but they did not listen to her. Then Z., returning to her place, began to pray for salvation from the pagans and received assurance from the Lord that she would not be captured. Leaving the house, she pricked her leg with a thorn tree, which caused her to die immediately. Z. was buried by a certain pious husband; Healings were performed at her grave.

The name F. first appears in Greek. synaxar legends, where it is reported about the sisters that they were from Demetrias near Tarsus and were relatives of the ap. Pavel. Z. was engaged in healing and preached to the pagans. After her sister left for the mountain, F. remained in the house, led a pious life, and was awarded the gift of miracles. She survived Z. and rested in peace.

In later Greek monuments (for example, in the poetic Synaxar of the 1st half of the 14th century (GIM. Syn. Greek. No. 369 (353). L. 130 - Vladimir (Philanthropov). Description. P. 520)) Z. and F. called martyrs. According to Slav. Prologue, they were stoned (WMC. Oct. Days 4-18. Stb. 932). In the Lives of the Saints, compiled by St. Demetrius, Met. Rostovsky, information about the martyrdom and peaceful death of Z. and F. is mixed.

In the Russian Orthodox Church calendar, the lifetime of Z. and F. dates back to the 1st century. according to R.H. on the basis of a synaxarical indication of their relationship with the ap. Pavel.

In the 9th century. St. Georgy, bishop Nicomedia, compiled a canon in honor of Z. and F., which was included in the Analecta Hymnica Graeca (AHG. T. 2. P. 97-106).

In Russian iconographic originals of the 18th century. consolidated edition on October 11. it is reported that “Zinaida has a scroll, and in it: Lord God our father, and I thank Thee, for you always listen to me, and we are tormented by a sick and evil spirit” (Bolshakov. Original icon painting. P. 37). The image of both saints is presented in a miniature from the Minology of Basil II (Vat. gr. 1613. P. 106. K-pol, 976-1025).

Z. and F. mentioned 11 Oct. in the Typikon of the Great Church. IX-X centuries (Mateos. Typicon. T. 1. P. 66) without liturgical sequence. In the various editions of the Studite and Jerusalem statutes, the memory of Z. and F. is not noted, however, the canon of Z. and F., compiled by the hymnographer George, is known from the manuscripts, in the 2nd plagal (i.e., 6th) voice, with an acrostic: ῾ Η Ζηναῒς ζῇ κα θανοῦσα σαρκίῳ. Γεωργίου (Zinaida lives even after dying in the flesh. George), irmos: ῾Ως ἐν ἠπείρῳ̇ ( ), beginning: ῾Η τῶν ἀφθόνων χαρίτων (Generous s favors) (AHG. T. 2. P. 97-106).

Unfailing Love for God

So, seeing what great changes happened to Paul after he turned to Christ and became a preacher of His faith, the young virgins also thought about the meaning of life, about the vanity of the world, and with all their souls they were inflamed with love for Christ.

After Paul’s sermon, they left their home and their mother forever, renouncing all earthly goods and property, and began to live in a cave near the city of Demetrias, north of their hometown of Tarsa.

Zinaida and Philonila began to walk around cities and villages and began to preach the holy Gospel, taking upon themselves the apostolic work.

The life states that Zinaida was a doctor and treated poor people for free. A lot of people flocked to their cave. God did not want to hide them from people who increasingly needed their help and service. The virgins guided people on the true path and led them to the Christian faith. They healed the people not only from physical diseases, but also from mental ulcers. Zinaida did a great job of healing, and Filonila devoted her attention to fasting, vigils and performed various miracles.

Why do Zinaidas pray?

It is not known exactly how long Saints Zinaida and Philonila spent in such asceticism, but the pagans living nearby could not calmly watch everything that was happening. As a result, their idolatrous temples began to become empty, and the worship of the old gods diminished. No matter how much they persuaded, no matter how much they intimidated the virgins, they did not deviate from their holy cause. And then, completely furious with anger, the pagans came to their cave and stoned them to death. Very selflessly and courageously, the sisters accepted a terrible martyrdom.

Saint Zinaida, whose name day is celebrated on October 11 (24), together with her sister, even today, through the diligent prayer of the person asking, help with any mental and physical weakness.

The sisters began to live in a nativity scene, which was located near Demitrias, located in the north of Tarsus. There they lived, Zinaida was engaged in healing various ailments, and Philonila devoted herself to fasting and vigils, she performed great miracles. God did not want all their efforts to be hidden from the eyes of people who needed the help of the holy virgins. More and more suffering people came to the sisters’ cave for help.

Martyrs Zinaida and Philonila treated not only physical ailments, but also spiritual wounds, introducing people to the Christian faith. Many pagans, thanks to the instructions of the sisters, acquired the Christian faith and were baptized. It is not known how long or how short the sisters lived in Demitrias, but many pagans were embittered, since their temples became deserted. The sisters were not affected by either persuasion or threats coming from embittered pagans. Then the pagans entered the sisters’ monastery at night and stoned them to death. And so the two holy martyrs accepted death.

Before the icon they pray for the healing of all mental and physical infirmities.

Oh, most praiseworthy martyr of Christ Zinaido, our trustworthy intercessor before the Lord. We fall down and pray to you: let us be partakers of your love for God and neighbor - with which your holy soul was filled with speed during your lifetime. Illuminate us with the truth, enlighten our minds and hearts with the light of Divine teaching, teach us to imitate you faithfully, to love God and our neighbor and to fulfill the commandments of the Lord without sin, so that we may truly appear as children of light. The holy martyrs Zinaida and Philonilla were familiar with the art of medicine and together they healed numerous hosts of the sick... The holy sisters were relatives and disciples of the holy Apostle Paul, coming from the same city of Tarsus. The pious virgins left everything, devoting themselves entirely to God, in order to serve the Creator and their neighbors as much as possible. Having accepted Holy Baptism, they left their mother and their estate, choosing a modest and uncomfortable cave not far from the city as their home.

The holy sisters treated everyone who came to them for treatment, not paying attention to what religion they were - Christians or pagans. Seeking healing, more and more people began to visit them. But while healing physical illnesses, the holy sisters tried to heal the spiritual illnesses of visitors, and instructed them in the Christian faith. In this way they contributed to the apostolic work of their relative. Seeing miracles and many healings performed by the hands of two virgins, the pagans abandoned their wickedness and came to Christ, the idolatrous temples were empty. The priests and the most fanatical idolaters were indignant at the ascetics. During the day they did not attack the saints, fearing the people. Then one dark night, at the instigation of the devil, enraged and ferocious pagans entered the cave where the holy virgins had settled and stoned them to death.

They pray to the holy martyrs Zinaida and Filonili for the sending of health of soul and body; their memory is celebrated on October 24. The name of one of the sisters, Zinaida, is found quite often in Rus', while the name of the second is almost completely forgotten.
