Governors of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, Donskoy and Sretensky monasteries have been appointed
The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church at its meeting on August 25, 2021 adopted a number of personnel decisions.
Archbishop Ambrose of Vereya was appointed His Eminence of Tver and Kashinsky, head of the Tver Metropolis, with the release of the abbot of the Sretensky Monastery and the rector of the Sretensky Theological Seminary. Hieromonk John (Ludishchev), acting, was appointed vicar of the Sretensky Monastery. Rector of Sretensky Theological Seminary - Chairman of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church, Archpriest Maxim Kozlov (magazine No. 49).
The Synod relieved Bishop Pitirim of Zvenigorod from the post of rector of the Moscow Theological Academy. Bishop Theodorit of Skopin and Shatsk was appointed rector of the MDA, vicar of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' with the title “Zvenigorod”. His Eminence Pitirim was destined to be Bishop of Skopinsk and Shatsk (magazine No. 50).
Bishop Paramon of Sergiev Posad was relieved of his post as vicar of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, retaining his duties as vicar of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' with the title “Naro-Fominsk” and being appointed to the post of chairman of the Financial and Economic Administration of the Moscow Patriarchate. Bishop Thomas of Bronnitsky was appointed vicar of the Lavra with the title “Sergiev Posad”, with the dismissal of the vicar of the Donskoy Monastery and first deputy chairman of the Financial and Economic Administration (magazines No. 51, 52). Also, Bishop Thomas was appointed chairman of the newly formed Commission of the Russian Orthodox Church for the development of Orthodox pilgrimage (magazine No. 70).
Bishop Eugene of Nizhny Tagil and Nevyansk was appointed vicar of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' with the title “Bronnitsky”, abbot of the Donskoy Monastery and chairman of the Synodal Department of Religious Education and Catechesis (magazines No. 53, 54).
Archpriest Dimitry Smirnov was relieved of his post as chairman of the Patriarchal Commission for Family Issues, Protection of Motherhood and Childhood, according to a submitted petition for health reasons, and appointed honorary chairman. Priest Feodor Lukyanov, a cleric in Moscow, was appointed chairman of the Commission (magazine No. 69).

Moscow Sretenskaya Theological Academy

On June 2 and 3, the feast of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, an all-night vigil and Divine Liturgy were held at the Sretensky Monastery. The feast of the Vladimir Icon is patronal for the Sretensky Monastery. The celebration of June 3 was established in honor of the miraculous deliverance of Moscow from the troops of Khan Akhmat through prayers at the icon of the Mother of God. In 2021, this event marks exactly 500 years.
The Festive Liturgy was led by Metropolitan Dionysius of the Resurrection, Administrator of the Moscow Patriarchate. Concelebrating with him was the rector of SPbDA, a former graduate, teacher and acting. rector of the Sretensky Seminary, Bishop Silouan of Peterhof, as well as the abbot of the Sretensky Monastery, Hieromonk John (Ludishchev), acting. Rector of the Sretensky Theological Academy, Chairman of the Educational Committee of the Russian Orthodox Church Archpriest Maxim Kozlov, Secretary of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Archimandrite Alexy (Turikov), brethren of the monastery, teachers and students of the Academy in holy orders.
Before the start of the Liturgy, Metropolitan Dionysius tonsured the students of the Sretensky Theological Academy Nikita Anashkin, Lev Varfolomeev, Rodion Galkovsky, Nikolai De Bellis, Vladimir Zhikharev, Ilya Ketov, Valery Kuzmenchuk, Sergei Lukishin, Dmitry Makarov, Georgy Mamonov, Alexey Ovchinnikov, Tikhon Ovchin as readers. Nikova, Alexander Petreikin, Ioann Potapov, Sergey Reznichenko, Veniamin Semindyaev, Ioann Smolin, German Truschelev, Nikolai Shevchuk, Ioann Shcherbenko.
After the Liturgy, Metropolitan Dionysius addressed those gathered with words of congratulations and blessings from His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus'. The abbot of the Sretensky Monastery, Hieromonk John (Ludishchev), in his response, conveyed gratitude to His Holiness the Patriarch, thanked Metropolitan Dionysius and Bishop Silouan for participating in the festive service and, in memory of the Liturgy performed on that day, presented the bishops with images of the Presentation of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God.
Before the thanksgiving service, Metropolitan Dionysius of the Resurrection addressed the Academy graduates with parting words:
“Most importantly, don’t forget that your studies are not over. You will have to study further and pass exams, but not the ones you are used to. Never forget that you study until the gates of the Kingdom of God open before you. The person who always considers himself a disciple is never ashamed before God. The conviction that there is something else that I do not know will protect the heart from pride. And the path of your life will be blessed. Because, as you know, God opposes the proud and only gives His grace to the humble.”
After the prayer service, Metropolitan Dionysius again addressed the graduates:
“Many of the graduates are concerned in a good way. The imprint of thoughts lies on your faces. Today during the Gospel we heard the following words: “Without a doubt, you have chosen the good part.” You couldn't have made a better choice for our time. Rejoice today. Enjoy tomorrow. And rejoice in all the other days of your life about your good and completely correct choice that you made. From His Holiness I convey to all of you the Primate’s blessing. He and the entire Church of Christ hope in you.”
The Rector of the Academy, Archpriest Maxim Kozlov, on behalf of all the teachers and students of the Academy, asked Metropolitan Dionysius to express his filial gratitude to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill for his constant attention and care for the Sretensky Theological School. The rector also addressed the Academy graduates with the words:
“An important stage of your life is behind you. The beginning stage is at the same time very bright, responsible and difficult. May the Lord help you in your subsequent work and life. Remember that you are all graduates of the best theological school of the Russian Orthodox Church - Sretensky Theological Academy. Be protected by God!”
Graduates of the master's and bachelor's programs expressed gratitude to Metropolitan Dionysius, Bishop Silouan, and conveyed words of gratitude to the first rector of Sretensky Theological Seminary, Metropolitan Tikhon of Pskov and Porkhov, mentors, and teachers. Timofey Rzyanin spoke on behalf of the bachelor's graduates, and Priest Nikolai Ustinov spoke on behalf of the master's graduates.
Then the Academy graduates were awarded diplomas.

Sretensky Monastery
In 1991, the cathedral in honor of the Presentation of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God, preserved on the territory of the Sretensky Monastery, was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and transferred to the “Sretenie” community of priest Georgy Kochetkov.
In 1994, with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II, monastic life was revived in the Sretensky Monastery and the metochion of the Holy Dormition Pskov-Pechersky Monastery was founded. In 1995, the courtyard was transformed into the Sretensky stauropegic monastery. Hieromonk Tikhon (Shevkunov) was appointed vicar of the monastery.
Bishop Tikhon of Yegoryevsk (Shevkunov Georgy Alexandrovich) was born on July 2, 1958 in Moscow, into a family of doctors. In 1982 he graduated from the screenwriting department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography with a degree in literary work. After graduating from high school, he became a novice at the Pskov-Pechersk Monastery.
Since August 1986, he worked freelance (in the status of a novice of the Pskov-Pechersk Monastery) in the Publishing Department of the Moscow Patriarchate, headed by Metropolitan Pitirim of Volokolamsk and Yuryev.
In July 1991 he was ordained as a hierodeacon, in August 1991? in hieromonk; served in the Donskoy Monastery in Moscow.
In 1993, he was appointed rector of the Moscow metochion of the Pskov-Pechersk Monastery, into which the parish of the Vladmir Cathedral of the former Sretensky Monastery was transformed.
Since 1995? Abbot. Since July 1996? abbot of the Sretensky Monastery. Since 1997? archimandrite. Since 2015, Bishop of Yegoryevsk.

Today more than forty monks live and work in the Sretensky Monastery. Hundreds of parishioners, who have found helpers in their spiritual life in the priests of the monastery, gather at the monastery for services. The monastery organizes catechetical courses, which are attended mainly by people who have recently entered church life. Currently, about four hundred people are enrolled in the courses.
The main shrine of the monastery is the relics of the holy martyr Hilarion (Troitsky), the heavenly patron of the monastery. The cathedral also contains particles of the relics of the Venerable Mary of Egypt, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Saints John Chrysostom and Basil the Great, Saint Seraphim of Sarov, the great martyr and healer Panteleimon and other great saints of God.
Sretensky book publishing house is one of the largest in modern Russia. The publishing house publishes liturgical, theological, historical, fiction, and books on all major areas of religious life.
Since 1997, the Sretensky Monastery has repeatedly organized collections of charitable aid for the residents of Chechnya, and the clergy of the monastery accompanied these humanitarian supplies to the city of Grozny and regions affected by the war.
In the fall of 1999, classes began at the Sretensky Higher Orthodox School, which, by decision of the Holy Synod in 2000, was transformed into a higher educational institution - the Sretensky Theological Seminary.
In 1997, the Russian Center for the Study of the Shroud of Turin was created in the Sretensky Monastery.
The Sretensky Monastery also has two monasteries: Seraphimovsky and Ilyinsky. The first (male), in the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov, is located in the Ryazan region, on the site of the Krasnoe estate restored by the monastery. Not far from the monastery, in the village of Slobodka, there is the agricultural cooperative “Resurrection”, which was revived from complete destruction and desolation by the brethren of the Sretensky Monastery. In the same Ryazan region, in the city of Mikhailov, the monastery took under its care an orphanage, the director of which was a priest - a graduate of Sretensky Seminary.
The second monastery is located in the village of Verzilovo, Stupino district, Moscow region. A small women's monastery was created in the late 1990s - early 2000s, the number of nuns is small.
