Transfiguration Cathedral
- Orthodox Cathedral in Togliatti. The construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral began in 1996 and was completed in 2002. The grandiose architectural structure, accommodating from three to five thousand people, is second in size only to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow and St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
Where is the Transfiguration Cathedral in Togliatti?
A large temple complex is located in the Samara region (Russian Federation), in the city of Togliatti, on Revolyutsionnaya Street, building 19 (32 block). The building looks good from afar, despite the fact that it is located in the Avtozavodsky district of the city, in a “dormitory” neighborhood, surrounded by multi-story buildings. This is the largest temple complex not only in the city, but also in the Samara-Syzran diocese.
The location of the cathedral is a former wasteland, which today is planted with trees and shrubs, turned into a park area, landscaped with pedestrian paths, flower beds and greenery.
On the Main Square near the entrance to the complex there are benches and benches for relaxation, and multiple paths make it possible to walk around the temple territory and view it from all sides.
How to get there?
The Transfiguration Cathedral (Tolyatti) is located in the block bounded by Leninsky Prospekt, Revolyutsionnaya and Yubileinaya streets. There are quite a few ways to get to the shrine from anywhere in the city, which are summarized in the table.

Tolyatti".
Story
In 1989, Archbishop John of the Kuibyshev and Syzran diocese blessed the construction of the church complex at the request of parishioners. During the August events of 1991, the town planning council held a meeting, which made a decision on the construction of the temple ensemble.
It included:
- Transfiguration Cathedral;
- belfry;
- administrative building with Sunday school, prosphora, refectory, library, choir;
- baptismal church for 800 people.
Initially, the construction was planned in the coastal zone of the Volga, but it is difficult for the urban population to get to that area. So, the 32nd block of the Avtozavodsky district of the city was chosen as the location of the complex.
Before these events, from December 13, 1990, services were held in an apartment in a 16-story building on Yubileinaya Street, which could accommodate no more than 20 people. At the front door there was a sign with the inscription “Transfiguration Cathedral”.
The beginning of construction dates back to May 1992. The first to be built was the Church of John the Baptist (baptismal church) and the clergy house. In 1996, the turn came for the construction of the main building of the cathedral, which was completed in 2002. Construction work was carried out by civil contractors commissioned by AvtoVAZ OJSC (the project sponsor) with the assistance of Archpriest Valery Marchenko.
Regular services began to be held in November 1994.
On August 19, 2002, the temple complex was solemnly opened and consecrated by Sergius, Archbishop of the Samara-Syzran diocese.
First steps to creating a spiritual center
Already in 1991, at a meeting of the city council, it was decided not to limit ourselves to the construction of just one temple building, but to begin the construction of a whole complex of structures. It was planned to create two churches, of which one was to become the main one, accommodating at least three thousand people, and the second was of a smaller size, intended mainly for performing the sacrament of baptism. In addition, the developed and approved plan included living quarters for the clergy and a bell tower.
Initially, the site for the construction of the temple complex was chosen on the picturesque bank of the Volga. It was ideal from an aesthetic point of view, but extremely inconvenient for future parishioners due to its distance from the main residential areas of the city. In this regard, they abandoned it and identified another place, located among the blocks of city high-rise buildings.
Architectural features of the cathedral
The Transfiguration Cathedral (Tolyatti) was designed by the architect from Moscow D. S. Sokolov. The main building was planned and constructed in the Old Russian style using innovative engineering technologies.
Features of the building include:
- The area used under the buildings totals 2800 sq. m. m.
- The height from ground level to the central cross on the dome is 62 m.
- The capacity of the temple is designed from 3 to 5 thousand people.
- The ensemble of the building includes: a large altar; small altars on the south and north sides; choirs; porch; lower tier; side porches.
- The domes and crosses are made of stainless steel and gold plated.
- The largest dome weighs 26 tons.
- External illumination of the facade was carried out.
- There is a radio broadcast system and speakerphone inside the premises.
- The building is protected by fire and security systems.
- Ventilation ducts and other communications have been thought out for the convenience of carrying out services.
During the construction of the temple, the engineer was involved:
- a pit 5 m deep for the foundation;
- up to 1500 cc m of concrete mixtures;
- 500 tons of metal for reinforcement;
- to make monolithic walls of the basement floor, formwork weighing 200 tons was knocked down;
- Non-standard floor slabs were used after installation, which were poured into one monolithic one.
Interior decoration
Among the splendor of the interior, the following features can be noted:
- Marble floors are laid out in mosaic patterns. In this case, 12 types of stone were used.
- The central iconostasis stretches to a height of 15 m.
- The cathedral has 16 icons, made by local jewelers using enamel with silver frames.
- All doors in the temple are carved oak, made in antique style, equipped with fittings and grilles made of brass.
- The central lamp (chandelier) in the cathedral is 10 m high and has 7 tiers.
- There are 13 chandeliers in total.
- Temple altars have names: central - Transfiguration of the Lord; northern - St. Nicholas the Wonderworker; southern – 40 Martyrs of Sebaste.
- The church choir area was built at a distance of 7.5 m from the floor level.
- The temple includes two choirs, designed for 5 and 15 people.
- The iconostasis for the baptismal church of John the Baptist was created by master A.V. Vakhromeyev.
Description of the architecture
The Transfiguration Church is an example of modern church architecture. The style of construction of the temple, on the one hand, fully corresponds to the Old Russian style, the main feature of which is the five-domed cathedral, but the above-mentioned style nevertheless overcame some transformations if we consider the architecture and decor of the cathedral in more detail.
Interior of the Transfiguration Church, Togliatti
The interior decoration of the temple is as magnificent and richly presented as the exterior. Noteworthy are the marble mosaic floor and the huge fifteen-meter iconostasis.
Patronal holidays
The main patronal feast of the cathedral is the Transfiguration of the Lord, which is celebrated in the following stages:
- pre-celebration takes 1 day - August 18;
- celebration – August 19;
- the post-celebration takes place over 7 days - August 20-26;
- delivery occurs on August 26th.
The holiday is dedicated to the contemplation of Christ the Savior by his three followers on Mount Tabor: Peter, James, John. There the prophets Moses and Elijah appeared to them and talked with them.
Shrines
In Togliatti, in the central Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior and in the parish church of John the Baptist, the following shrines are preserved:
- The holy face and a particle of the relics of Maxim the Greek - theologian, scholar-translator, who lived around 1470-1556, after the death of the canonized. During his lifetime, the pious man took monastic vows in Athos and was engaged in translating liturgical books.
- Icon of Archangel Michael from Holy Mount Athos - the head of the Holy Angelic Host, the senior messenger of the Almighty. In front of the icon they ask for recovery and protection from thieves, wars and troubles.
- A copy of the icon “The Queen of All”, the Mother of God, who has the ability to heal from cancer. Also, parishioners ask the lyce for deliverance from alcoholism, drug addiction and witchcraft. The original image is located on Holy Mount Athos of the Vatopedi monastery and dates back to the 17th century, the face served as a blessing to the sage Joseph the Hesychast to his disciples.
- The icon of St. Athanasius of Athos has healing powers. The pious elder lived in the 10th century and was distinguished by his tolerance, brevity of character, fear of God, and spent his entire life building a temple.
All the shrines were brought and donated on behalf of the Archimandrite of the New Athos Vatopedi monastery Ephraim in 2004.

What was regarded by the church ministers as a favorable sign of God's mercy by lighting the temple.

Old Tukshum, which during the Soviet period was adapted into a mill, which is why it requires a large amount of reconstruction work. Orthodox shrines of Togliatti
Temple architecture in Russia is a special direction that surprises and delights with its beauty and diversity. Therefore, a tour of the sights of Togliatti would be incomplete without visiting religious buildings, because Orthodox shrines preserve the spirit and traditions of ancient Rus'.
Moreover, the Byzantine style, once adopted by the Russian Orthodox Church, received a rather original development.
And we will begin our excursion, perhaps, with an inspection of the Transfiguration Cathedral , located at the address: st. Revolutionary, 19.
The cathedral is second in size only to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. However, you can read more about this in Routes around Moscow. The Transfiguration Cathedral has long received international recognition.
note
Many architects and experts, as well as clergy, consider it perhaps the best religious building in Russia built in the last hundred years. Parishioners, pilgrims and simply tourists - connoisseurs of architecture come here.
By the way, if you are a fan of bell ringing, you can rent an apartment for daily rent in Tolyatti not far from the cathedral and enjoy the “raspberry ringing” in the morning.
To give you the most accurate idea of the scale of this structure, we will give some figures: the building area is 2800 square meters, the capacity is 3000 people, the height of the central iconostasis is 15 meters, the central dome weighs 26 tons.
But it is not only its impressive size that attracts attention to this temple. The floors here are lined with amazingly beautiful mosaics, the oak doors are decorated with intricate carvings, and the temple is illuminated by thirteen chandeliers.
The temple is especially beautiful at night, when the snow-white walls of the facade cut into the blue of the night.
One of the oldest churches in Tolyatti is the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Fedorovka St. Kooperativnaya 27a). It was built in 1846 by local landowner N.F. Bakhmetev, who greatly grieved for his wife who died in childbirth, and a temple was built in memory of her.
In the mid-30s of the twentieth century, it suffered the sad fate of many Russian religious buildings - it was closed and then converted into a club. It was only in 1989 that restoration work began to restore it. The restoration work was headed personally by Professor A.V. Vasnetsov.
And in 1990, construction of a temple complex and monastery began next to the revived shrine. However, only monks can be content with little, and you and I would be better off finding more comfortable rooms to live in Togliatti.
The next point of our journey through the Orthodox shrines of Tolyatti will be the Theotokos-Kazan Church, currently located at Kamsky Proezd, building 4. This temple was built twice. The first time was in 1738. The temple in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was flooded in 1953 along with the old city.
True, for the sake of fairness, it must be said that they still tried to dismantle it in order to move it to a new place, but the stonework of its walls turned out to be too strong and after several attempts it was blown up. The new temple was built only in 1985. Here are collected icons, church utensils, liturgical objects - everything that has survived from the old temple.
Holy Trinity Church , construction of which began only in 1994. The project was developed by architects from Samara V. Pshennikov and Yu. Astakhov (read more about temple architecture in Samara here). The temple was built in the Komsomolsky district on the street. Krasnodontsev, 60. Previously, there were no churches in this area. But in 1991, a group of believers took the initiative to open a church. The aspirations of the believers were satisfied and they were soon given a small wooden barracks, which they were asked to furnish on their own. In 1994, the building of a new temple was laid, but construction was carried out extremely slowly due to lack of funding, and only in 2004 the construction was completed and the new temple was consecrated. But apartments for daily rent in Togliatti in this area will not be difficult.
