Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral, Tambov. History, photo, address, services

The Transfiguration Church is an architectural monument of the 19th century and a religious building in the city of Ivanovo. Until 2014 it was considered a cathedral, then this status passed to the Assumption Church. The changes did not affect the popularity of the church in any way - local believers still go to services here and speak warmly about its activities and the atmosphere prevailing there.

They started talking about the construction of a religious building in 1889.

The first stone for the foundation of the future temple was laid on August 27 of the same year. Construction took three years and ended on August 24, 1893.

It is known that local manufacturer Garelin allocated funds for these purposes. The project was developed by Moscow architect Alexander Kaminsky, the author of one of the buildings of the famous Tretyakov Gallery, the Dzerzhinsky Nikolo-Ugreshsky Monastery and other buildings.

Initially, the church was intended for residents of Rylikha, which existed on the outskirts of Ivanovo. Then the village became a settlement and changed its name to Preobrazhenskoye.

Since 1931, difficult times began in the history of the Ivanovo Transfiguration Church: two communities operated here - the traditional direction from the Intercession Cathedral and the renovation movement - from the Assumption Cemetery Church, which inevitably led to disagreements.

From May 1940 to November 1944, the Transfiguration Cathedral in Ivanovo was not active. The reason for this is the corresponding decision of the regional executive committee. However, local residents still managed to defend the shrine. In 2013, the temple celebrated its 120th anniversary.

Architecture of the Transfiguration Cathedral

The transformation of the cathedral continued throughout the entire period of its existence. It was erected using the Smolensk Assumption Cathedral as a basis.

They are united by the following features:

  1. They have 2 floors.
  2. The last floors are two-height.
  3. The second light windows had a round shape.
  4. Almost the same color scheme.

The Transfiguration Cathedral belongs to an architectural type that was characteristic of Eastern countries in the period from the 5th to the 8th centuries. It has cylindrical vaults arranged crosswise. Today the temple is a combination of baroque and classicism of the 18th century.

This is its uniqueness. During the completion of the cathedral, the ancient walls and columns installed at the entrances were preserved. They are an integral part of the domed rotunda.

Interesting fact: The Temple of John the Warrior on Yakimanka was built in 1700. And throughout its history it has never been closed: services continued here even during the difficult years for the Church in the 1920s and 1930s.

From the first days of our monastic life, we received special support and spiritual help from Mother Abbess Nikolai, abbess of the St. Nicholas Chernoostrovsky Maloyaroslavets Monastery. Mother Nicholas studied monastic life from many modern elders, both living and deceased. She was the spiritual daughter of the elder Schema-Archimandrite Michael, who died in Bose, and corresponded with the elder John Krestyankin, with the Athonite elder Joseph the monk, the spiritual child of the elder Joseph the hesychast. Mother Abbess drank the spiritual honey of the instructions of the elders Father Nikolai Guryanov, Father Pavel Gruzdev, Father Jerome of Sanaksar, Father Kirill Pavlov and many other confessors. A special spiritual relationship connects Mother with the modern elders Schema-Archimandrite Eli and Schema-Archimandrite Blasius. Thanks to Mother, these spiritual mentors help us too. Mother Abbess has become a spiritual mother for all of us, to whom we turn for guidance and help in all difficult situations that arise in our monastic life.

The cover of prayers of Mount Athos extends over the Maloyaroslavets Monastery thanks to the ardent love of Mother Abbess Nikolai for the Garden of the Most Pure Mother of God. Modern Athonite ascetics, abbots of monasteries, kalivs and cells, and just monks, love to come to the St. Nicholas Monastery, because there they feel the Athonite spirit of real monasticism close to their hearts. The Chernoostrovsky monastery became a sprout of the spiritual Garden of the Most Pure Mother of God, and not only blossomed, but also bore fruit. Many sisters of the monastery headed other monasteries in the cities and villages of our country, from Khabarovsk to Essentuki, trying to plant the same shoots of strict monastic life in new monasteries in order to bear fruit a hundredfold.

It is difficult to express the gratitude to God that we feel having this large monastic family.

The temple is the heart of the monastery; the main obedience of the sisters in the monastery is prayer. In their liturgical life, the sisters find strength in bearing the monastic cross and consolation in sorrowful circumstances.

But in monastic life, any obedience takes on a special meaning, since it is performed for the Glory of God. Monastic works are salvific and filled with deep spiritual content. The sisters, with equal joy and zeal, try to sing in the choir, or dig the soil in the garden, do handicrafts, or wash the dishes. The sisters love the monastery and thank God for the opportunity to be saved in this holy place.

Monasticism is a mystery, but spiritually experienced monks who have comprehended this mystery say: “Monasticism is bliss.”

Interior decoration of the Transfiguration Cathedral

Those visiting the cathedral pay attention to its interior decoration, since the architectural traditions of ancient times were used in its design. The temple is decorated with 6 pillars, and on the top floor they are columns. The altar is located close to the center, hidden behind it are a pair of pillars installed in the eastern part.

The altar part recedes somewhat from them, giving the impression that it is much larger in size than it might seem from the outside. The decoration of the upper part of the cathedral is distinguished by solemnity and sophistication. If the porch has a low ceiling, then the main part of the room seems quite spacious. The ceilings here are 3 - 4 m higher.

The feeling of large space also comes from the light rotunda. The color scheme of the interior is light ocher. Thanks to the lighting and space, all objects seem weightless. The iconostasis here is unusual for traditional walls with icons in Russia. It is made according to the Western type: the altar barrier has a small height, and the second tier of icons and the second row of windows are located on the same level.

The temple walls, stairs and vestibule are covered with frescoes that describe the stages of Pitirim's activity. The frescoes are made in the academic style characteristic of the early twentieth century. The ceilings are covered with beautiful paintings. The lower temple is more intimate. Its interior decoration is distinguished by the absence of paintings on the walls and ceiling; they are covered with whitewash. The icons are in the walls.

The altar with the throne is located in a part of the cathedral that resembles a narrow corridor. It is bounded on all sides by pillars and completed with one row of icons. The lower temple attracts all believers because there is a shrine with the resting relics of Saint Pitirim.

History of the Transfiguration Cathedral

The idea to build a stone temple on the site of a wooden church came from Bishop Pitirim, appointed to Tambov. Construction of the cathedral began, according to various sources, in 1693 or 1694 and took place under his direct supervision.

After the death of Pitirim (1698), the construction of the church was stopped due to lack of money for 40 long years. Pitirim was buried in a crypt located in the southern part of the cathedral. In 1738, a second floor was erected above the first floor; it was made of wood, which horrified everyone who saw this structure. Gradually the church fell into disrepair, and at the end of the 18th century. was a pitiful sight.

Then the merchant Matvey Borodin decided to rebuild the temple at his own expense. In 1809, construction of a stone church began. The bell tower was also dilapidated and in need of repair. At the insistence of Bishop Theophilus (in the world - Raev), the Tambov Spiritual Consistory began collecting funds from cathedral members for the construction of a new bell tower.

And after 2 years the first stone was laid for the construction of a new building. By 1812 (according to other sources - by 1817), not far from the cathedral there was a three-tiered bell tower made of stone, equipped with a tent and a lantern. Its height was 42.5 m. At this time, construction was in full swing in the church.

As a result, the following transformations were carried out:

  • the second floor was built of stone;
  • an iron roof appeared;
  • the walls and domes were painted;
  • vaults are plastered;
  • floors are laid;
  • new window frames were installed;
  • a staircase was built between the floors;
  • A 3-tier iconostasis was made, covered with gilding and decorated with carved patterns.

In 1817, construction of the bell tower was completed. The domes were the decoration of this structure, one of them weighed about 8000 kg. In subsequent years, a porch was built adjacent to the temple, and domes covered with gold and stars were installed.

Since 1846, elder Gabriel Kazakov took over the responsibility for improving the church. The outdated and outdated iconostasis was replaced with a new one, and the interior decor was made taking into account the fashion of that time. At that time, the walls began to be decorated with frescoes, the motifs of which were taken from the scenes of the Old and New Testaments. Since then, construction has been suspended for a long time.

At the beginning of the twentieth century. Metropolitan Kirill ruled in the cathedral. Members of the imperial family attended his services; Emperor Nicholas II himself came here in 1904 and 1914. Princess Elizabeth Feodorovna and priest John of Kronstadt were here.

After the revolution of 1917 and until the end of the twentieth century, the cathedral was in decline:

1919Opening of the relics of Pitirim
1922Seizure of valuables, including gold and diamonds
1930Closing of the temple, demolition of the bell tower
Transfer of the building to the local history museum

Interior redevelopment

The frescoes on the walls of the cathedral were erased, the internal partitions were dismantled. Part of the clergy was subjected to persecution and repression.

The revival period began in 1989 at the insistence of believers. For 2 years, the service was carried out downstairs, and the second floor remained at the disposal of the museum.

At the end of the summer of 1991, the authorities gave the Transfiguration Cathedral to the believers. This decision was made by the local parliamentary council. After 2 years, the main dome of the cathedral was decorated with a cross, and Archbishop Eugene consecrated the throne located in the lower part of the cathedral.

In the same year, 1993, the main shrines were returned to their original place - the relics of the patron saint of the Tambov land, Saint Pitirim, and his phelonion. From that time on, the cathedral began to be registered with the Tambov diocese. This solemn event took place when Patriarch Alexy II visited Tambov.

With the help of believers, repair work was carried out, an iconostasis was installed in the cathedral, and a cross was installed on the dome. The consecration of the first floor of the renovated cathedral was done on August 6, 1993. On this day, all believers celebrate a great holiday - the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the same time, the first liturgy after many years of oblivion was held.

And on August 10, the relics of Saint Pitirim were returned from the reserves. Gradually, the 2nd floor became vacant, and an iconostasis was installed here. It was made by master icon painters from St. Petersburg. The frescoes have also been restored. The Transfiguration Cathedral (Tambov) received the official status of a religious community on March 16, 1994.

In August 2002, he was visited again by Alexy II, who held an all-night vigil on August 10. This is a special day for believers when they commemorate the patron Saint Pitirim. A Divine Liturgy was held in his honor, and the believers made a religious procession. From the Patriarch the cathedral received a lectern image of the Transfiguration of the Lord as a gift.

In 2007, a new cross was installed. At the same time, the dome was covered with gold, the temple was painted light green, and it acquired the proper appearance. In 2011, the bell tower of the cathedral was restored based on ancient images. On May 18 of the same year there was a religious procession in the cathedral, and the cross restored on the bell tower was consecrated.
