Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

Founded in 1913, the relics of Seraphim Vyritsky rest here.

History[edit]

In 1910, on the lands of His Serene Highness Prince Peter Fedorovich Wittgenstein, the dacha settlement “Princely Valley” was created, the intensive settlement of which began immediately. Even when planning the territory, it was planned to allocate a site along Rakeevskaya Street between Pilny and Maysky Avenues for the construction of a temple. However, the issue was raised only on August 2 (15), 1912 at a general meeting of village residents. At the same time, the proposed site was considered inconvenient, so a new one was found at the corner of Rakeevskaya Street and Magistralny Avenue. The cost of land here was higher than on the first plot, but the prince agreed to make a 50% discount, and donated almost half of the remaining amount himself. The required 717 rubles were collected by residents by subscription. In order for the site to have an owner, the Brotherhood was founded in honor of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, the charter of which was approved on December 9 (22), 1912 by Metropolitan Vladimir of St. Petersburg and Ladoga.

The Council of the Brotherhood decided to build the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in memory of the 300th anniversary of the reign of the House of Romanov. Five works were submitted to the competition for the temple design. The project of architects V. P. Apyshkov and M. V. Krasovsky was chosen by a majority of votes. Issues of financing the construction of the temple were decided by the Brotherhood Council. Prince P. F. Wittgenstein, using 717 rubles, which the Brotherhood paid for the land, purchased a plot at 13 Melnichny Prospekt and allowed the use of its forest for the construction of a temple. In addition, using additional funds raised, Prince P. F. Wittgenstein sold another 1000 logs. The plot itself was sold again, and the owner donated the funds for the construction of the temple. To increase the significance of the enterprise in the eyes of high society, the Brotherhood turned on February 27 (March 12), 1913, to the prince of the imperial blood, John Konstantinovich, with a request to become its honorary chairman, to which consent was received on March 20 (April 2).

On July 14 (27), 1913, Bishop of Tobolsk and Siberia Alexy (Molchanov) laid the foundation stone for the temple. By winter the church was completely ready, the area was surrounded by a fence. The decoration of the temple began in the spring; on May 26 (June 8), 1914, bells and crosses were raised, consecrated by Archbishop Nikon (Rozhdestvensky). The construction and equipment of the temple cost 53,904 rubles. The temple was consecrated on July 26 (August 8), 1914 by Bishop Veniamin (Kazan) of Gdov. The honorary chairman of the Brotherhood, Prince John Konstantinovich himself, was unable to attend the consecration due to the outbreak of war.

Services in the temple were performed only in the summer. In 1921, a new iconostasis was installed in the church, transported from the closed shelter church of the Brusnitsin brothers. In 1928-1930 the parish joined the Josephite movement. After the closure of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra in 1933, its confessor, Hieroschemamonk Seraphim (Muravyov), moved to Vyritsa, who at first periodically served in the temple, being its parishioner. In 1938 the temple was closed. The OSOAVIAKHIM society was located in its premises, while the parishioners managed to preserve most of the icons, utensils and elements of the temple’s decoration.

After the occupation of Vyritsa by the Germans in 1941, the temple was reopened. In many ways, the consent of the German command to services in the church was due to the fact that there was a unit in the village, mainly consisting of Orthodox Romanians. The church did not close even after the liberation of Vyritsa. In 1959, the Commissioner for Religious Affairs for the Gatchina District issued an order to close the temple. This did not happen, thanks to the active position of the village residents, who sent a petition to the Presidium of the Supreme Council, and the order was canceled.

Modern life of the Kazan Temple

Since 2005, the rector of the temple has been Archpriest Georgy Nikolaevich Preobrazhensky.

The temple is open to visitors daily from 9.00 to 18.00. The service begins at ten o'clock in the morning. In the summer, on Sundays and on patronal feast days, liturgies are held at 7.00 and 10.00. The Sacrament of Baptism and Marriage can be performed in the church.

Architecture and interior decoration[edit]

The temple was built in the style of tent-roofed wooden churches of the Russian North, in particular Olonets and Vologda. Modern technologies at that time were used during construction. The building is a traditional octagon-on-quadruple type for tented churches. The church itself is surrounded by a walkway and has a basement. The entrance to the temple is through a porch leading to the vestibule. The church is designed for 600-700 worshipers.

There are three chapels in the temple: the main one - in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God; southern - in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker; northern (in the basement) - in the name of the Venerable Seraphim of Sarov and Alexy, the man of God.

The first oak carved two-tier iconostasis was built according to the drawings of M. V. Krasovsky. In 1922 it was moved to the Nikolsky chapel. The icons on the Royal Doors, as well as the images of the Savior and the Mother of God, are executed in the style of open Greek writing. The central wooden iconostasis made of bog oak was transported in 1922 from the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker at the House of Care for Young Orphans in memory of Nikolai and Elena Brusnitsyn on the Oblique Line. The choirs and large icons in icon cases were moved from there. Also from the St. Nicholas Church are two paintings by N. A. Koshelev, painted by him in 1898: “The Mother of God - the Joy of All Who Sorrow” and “The Blessing of Children.”

A cypress altar on an oak base with marble trim was donated for the consecration of the temple by A. A. Kuznetsov and M. M. Ignatiev. During the consecration, P. I. Letunovsky donated a two-tier bronze chandelier for 28 candles with crystal chains. After the consecration, in the temple there was an icon of the Resurrection of Christ with a particle of the stone of the Holy Sepulcher, sent by the Patriarch of Jerusalem Damian.

At the right choir of the central chapel, in the icon case, there is the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God - the ancestral image of the Muravyov family, from which the Monk Seraphim Vyritsky came.

Canonization

The glorification of Hieromonk Seraphim took place in 2000. In October of the same year, a solemn liturgy was held in the Kazan Church in the village of Vyritsa. A month later, a small wooden chapel was erected over the grave of the Holy Venerable Seraphim of Vyritsky and Schema-nun Seraphima (Olga Ivanovna Tronina).

Despite the fact that Father Seraphim was canonized at the beginning of the 21st century, believers came to his grave at the walls of the Kazan Church back in Soviet times. They argued that in response to humble prayer, help or a sign always comes, pointing in the right direction.

Miracles of our times

Saved people at a construction site

Sexton of the Church of St. ap. Andrew the First-Called Art. Novaya Chara, Kalarsky district, Trans-Baikal Territory, Anatoly Voronin, told the following story. While working at Mostotryad-97, he participated in the construction of bridges on one of the railways. On the day when the fourth support of the bridge was to be installed, the sexton remembered that he had with him the icon of St. Petersburg brought from Vyritsk. Seraphim, a handful of holy earth and a capsule with blessed oil. Then he attached the icon in his trailer, poured some earth into the support and anointed the small Orthodox crosses attached to the mounted fittings with oil.

While pouring the support, an accident occurred - due to an error by the crane operator, the crane overturned and fell. However, surprisingly, the crane fell outside the work area with people, although subsequent analysis revealed that, according to all the laws of physics, the machine should have fallen exactly where part of the crew was working. In addition, the crane operator himself managed to remain unharmed. Finally, I was also pleased that the crane did not fall into a nearby river, from where it would have been impossible to get it. As a result, the terrible event culminated in only general mild fear.

At the end of the day, people offered thanksgiving prayers to St. Seraphim for saving them all from great trouble.

Helped relieve terrible headaches

People suffering from frequent and severe migraines know what a difficult ordeal this is. Sudden onset pain can last for several days or even weeks, and often the most powerful medications are not effective enough.

A resident of St. Petersburg, Olesya Galkina, told how one day on the eve of Easter, on a trip to the Vyritsky Church, she got a very bad headache. The pills didn't help. Going into the chapel to the Monk Seraphim, she timidly asked for help. After praying, she went outside and was surprised to find that she felt great. The pain has subsided.

A week later, the woman suddenly again felt a severe headache suddenly attack her. And turning her thoughts to the righteous old man, she instantly felt complete relief. Having believed in a real miracle, Olesya is now not afraid of any illnesses, because she knows that the saint always hears her prayers and heeds them.

Helped move and save mom's life

Sisters Galina and Olga say that in 1979, their mother Tamara, then a fairly young but very sick woman, was given a disappointing diagnosis by doctors and given group 2 disability. They then lived in Tashkent, and the doctors strongly recommended that the woman urgently move to a cooler climate, otherwise her health and life would be in danger.

In the USSR it was possible to exchange apartments, and the family began to actively look for suitable options. However, time passed, and those wishing to move into their apartment did not appear. To take a break from the destructive heat for her, Tamara went to her friend in St. Petersburg. From her she learned about the miraculous deeds of Seraphim Vyritsky and decided to go to the saint to pay tribute. In Vyritsa, the woman talked with a local resident who personally knew the priest. She prayed as best she could, ordered a memorial service and went home.

Soon after returning to Tashkent, the family unexpectedly received an excellent exchange offer after many months of calm. The sisters, together with their mother and grandmother, moved to Narva. The climate of Estonia benefited Tamara and her health improved. The woman lived for another 30 years, managing to raise her daughters and become a happy grandmother. Every day the family thanked the Lord and the holy saint Seraphim Vyritsky for hearing Tamara’s prayers and helping.

Set me on the path of truth

Pavel Starikov, a private entrepreneur, once found himself in an extremely difficult financial situation. He urgently needed a large sum of money and, having found no other options, he decided to sell the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos of Kazan. Driving through Vyritsa (later he realized that he was there at the behest of God), he decided to go to the chapel of Father Seraphim. From there he returned as a completely different person. Repenting of his ungodly desire, he abandoned the idea of selling the icon.

Now, when some difficult life situations arise, Pavel strives to quickly visit the temple and chapel of Vyritsa. The atmosphere reigning there every time helps him to find peace of mind and peace, which is always followed by enlightenment.

Gave me a husband and son

Inna talks about her friend, who, despairing of finding a worthy life partner, turned with prayers to Seraphim Vyritsky, whom she revered. Three months later, the woman mistakenly ended up on the wrong metro line, where she met her future husband. The man, also by a sudden coincidence, ended up at the same station. This was the first time in three years that he decided to use the metro...

After marriage, the couple lived for two years in peace, kindness and love, but the woman could not get pregnant. The not-so-young couple (she was 40, he was 56) were very worried and visited all the best doctors, but to no avail. Then they decided to go with prayers to St. Seraphim. Sincerely hoping for help and believing in the powers of heaven, they received what they so ardently desired. Soon they had a beautiful, healthy boy.

Oredezh River: swimming spots

Arriving at the station, you will find yourself on the central Communal Avenue. If you follow it to the end, you will find yourself on the river bank. There are many places for swimming, and the village itself stretches along the coast for several kilometers. There are abandoned bridges over Oredezh, a train crossing and a small but atmospheric dam.

In Vyritsa there is the Golden Beach Shudibil. This is the most popular swimming spot among the village residents. A rather steep slope is decorated with fancy pine roots, and below there is clean sand, just like on a classic beach. You can also swim on the opposite bank. In general, in Vyritsa you can find many quiet places with access to the water. You just need to walk along the coast and choose the landscape you like.
