Church of St. Nina

built in 2009-2010, during the laying of the foundation, the remains of Soviet soldiers were discovered here. Patronal holiday: January 27, the day of memory of Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, the enlightener of Georgia.

History[[edit]h2>

Temple of Equal Apostles Nina was built near the Walk of Fame - an alley of 900 birches, which, in turn, runs along the former defense line of Leningrad in 1941-1944. The day of lifting the blockade of Leningrad fell on the celebration of the memory of this saint - January 27, and the name of Saint Nina is firmly associated with the liberation of the city on the Neva.

Construction of the wooden church building began in 2009, the church was consecrated on January 27, 2010. The architects of the church are Ilya Gorbunov, Alexander Gorbunov. During the construction of the temple, the Georgian Orthodox community provided great assistance.

Near the church there is a mass grave of Soviet soldiers. Their remains were discovered during the laying of the foundation of the temple.

The temple community plans that this wooden temple is only temporary and that subsequently a stone building will be erected here.

Story

The Crimean lands were at that time very attractive for noble families; the first to acquire an estate on the southern coast in Gaspra was Prince Mikhail Nikolaevich (son of Nicholas I). On the acquired land, Mikhail Nikolaevich built a cozy estate, a small palace, with a huge park, a vineyard and a wine cellar. The grape estate brought in enormous income; the entire family of Grand Duke Georgiy Mikhailovich always gathered in this estate.

The estate was divided by the two sons of Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna after her death. Most of the estate went to Alexander Mikhailovich, and the smaller part to Georgy Mikhailovich.

More about the holy places of Crimea:

  • Holy Trinity Monastery of Simferopol
  • Peshnoshsky Monastery in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the village of Lugovoy, Dmitrovsky district
  • Church-lighthouse of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Malorechenskoye

Prince Georgy Mikhailovich will build the Kharaks estate on his part of the land. In 1904, construction of a palace, a kitchen, a suite and a house church began here. The project was carried out by architect Krasnov. The house church of St. Nina in Gaspra was built by the architect Krasnov. The project was adapted to the complex of buildings of Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich in Crimea.

Interesting! Construction of the church began in January 1906 and was completed 2 years later. The building was decorated based on the Byzantine-Georgian style.

In his youth, Prince Georgy Nikolaevich and his family spent a lot of time in the mountainous Caucasus, so he was a lover of Caucasian art. The decorative design of the Church of St. Nina includes an element such as an arch; several of them are installed in niches in the corners of the building and in the openings of the belfry. The temple is crowned with a stone cross, which is located on an octagonal drum. A beautiful design element is a stone flower on a thin stem on each edge of the drum.

Overall, the church turned out to be modest, but exquisitely beautiful. It’s worth looking at, being inspired by the beauty of those times, breathing in the Crimean mountain air and feeling God’s grace.

Historical photo of the Church of St. Nino

Architect Krasnov was very pleased and proud of how the church turned out:

  • he wrote everywhere about his creation as something very successful;
  • he even drew clothes for a priest, which were sewn according to his sketches at a factory in St. Petersburg.

The mosaics for the decoration of the temple were made by a Venetian artist.

Many years later, the prince’s estate turned into the territory of the Dnepr sanatorium, in which the buildings of the principality and the Church of St. Nina were preserved.

Consecration and raising of the dome with a cross on the Church of St. equal to Nina

In Kaliningrad, the consecration and raising of the dome with a cross took place on the church of St. Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina, the enlightener of Georgia, under construction (Lazaretnaya St., 22).

The consecration ceremony was performed by the rector of the church, Archpriest Vladimir Kuzmin.

***

Saint Nina was born around 280 into a pious and noble family in the city of Kolastra in Cappadocia, where there were many Georgian settlements.

At the age of 12, she visited Jerusalem with her parents, where she was entrusted with the upbringing of the pious elder Nianfora , who strengthened her in the Orthodox faith. Nina's father Zabulon devoted his life to serving God in the deserts of Jordan, and mother Susanna was made a deaconess at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Having once learned from Nianfora that Georgia had not yet been enlightened by the light of Christianity, Saint Nina began to pray to the Mother of God that the Most Pure One would grant her to see Georgia turned to Christ .

After some time, the Mother of God appeared to the girl in a dream, handing over a cross woven from a vine and saying: “Take this cross, it will be your shield and fence against all visible and invisible enemies. Go to the country of Iveron, preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ there and you will find grace from Him: I will be your Patroness.”

Having received a blessing from the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Saint Nina went to Georgia to preach about Christ, where she arrived in 319.

It was in Georgia that Equal-to-the-Apostles was destined for the main service of the Gospel preaching, which was accompanied by various miracles, but also trials.

Thus, the saint managed to heal from a serious illness, and then convert the Georgian queen Nana . In addition, through her prayers, it was revealed to Saint Nina where the Robe of the Lord was hidden, and the first Christian church in Georgia was erected there.

In general, Equal-to-the-Apostles Nina devoted 35 years to the cause of enlightening Georgia. In 347, at the age of 66 (according to other sources in 335), she went to the Lord in Bodbe, where she asked to be buried.

The relics of the saint, hidden under a bushel by her command, were glorified by many healings and miracles.

***

On the site of the former k/t "Barricades" at Kaliningrad, st. Lazaretnaya, 22, the construction of the Orthodox Church of St. Nina Equal to the Apostles is underway.

Years will pass, and the temple, erected by common efforts, will stand, and while it stands, everyone’s contribution will cry out to God for the salvation of his soul. Any form of participation and assistance will not be left without prayer for the benefactor.

Appearance

When designing the temple, Nikolai Krasnov was guided by the Armenian monastery of Aphat and the Gelati Cathedral in Georgia. The walls of the church were made of limestone; The stone vault had a reinforced concrete base. Bronze was used in the manufacture of the royal and northern gates.

The architect decorated the corners of the temple with arched niches; He placed arched windows on the north and south of the building, and decorated the dome-belfry with openings of the same shape. An octagonal drum with a stone cross was installed at the top of the religious building.

The artist A. Salviati from Venice created a mosaic canvas on which the Savior Not Made by Hands was depicted. The panel was fixed above the entrance to the temple. Unfortunately, over time it was lost.
