Located near the circus in the beautiful central area of the city, it is part of a unique cathedral complex. It is considered the Cathedral. Here this complex is called the most important for the entire Bryansk clergy. The former Resurrection Convent became an excellent location for the current Bryansk Church. Currently it is located at a distance from the Church of the Resurrection. It is there that you can admire the beauty of the spiritual heritage of the Bryansk land.
Holy Trinity Cathedral on Lenin Avenue. The nearby Peresvet bell tower rose 80 meters up
The Trinity Church itself is quite large. Its area, if we take only the lower tier, is almost one thousand square meters. And the dimensions of the upper floor of the temple reach 882 square meters. Such an impressive size of the building allows it to accommodate up to three thousand people during services; services are held every day.
This is interesting: the bell tower of the Trinity Cathedral, located next to the temple, has its own dome and cross. The height of the building reaches eighty meters. The seventeen-ton bell installed on the bell tower is called “Peresvet”.

Cathedral complex
When mentioning the city of Bryansk, the Trinity Cathedral is the first thing that comes to mind for many people. After all, this is a magnificently beautiful temple, which is the pearl of the Cathedral spiritual and educational cathedral complex, located at Lenin Ave., 58.
The cathedral complex itself includes the following structures:
- Cathedral Church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ.
- A wooden church named in honor of the new martyrs of Bryansk.
- Bell tower "Peresvet".
- Holy Trinity Cathedral (Bryansk).
History of construction
It is very important to know some historical points. Without them, it is absolutely impossible to fully appreciate the majesty of this unique structure.
Work on the restoration of the Cathedral in the city of Bryansk (Trinity Cathedral) was begun by the former Archbishop of Bryansk and Sevsk Theophylact (under Patriarch Alexy II), and completed by Bishop Alexander (under Patriarch Kirill)
The temple acquired its modern appearance not so long ago - at the beginning of the 21st century. Before this long-awaited moment, the previously existing Bryansk Cathedral was destroyed. This happened back in 1968. For a long period, such a majestic structure did not exist in the city.
After many years, they decided to restore the department and build a new cathedral, which now bears the name of the Holy Trinity. At the same time, the idea of accommodating a large number of parishioners was pursued.
The approval of the project for the future cathedral took place under Alexy II, who also blessed its construction.
The construction of the Trinity Cathedral proceeded at a good pace; just three years later, the very first divine service was held on its ground floor. And after another 24 months, all the altars of the temple were consecrated by Bishop Theophylact of Bryansk and Sevsk.
A few years later, the Liturgy was celebrated in the upper tier of the new church. After this event, the relics of the blessed Prince Oleg of Bryansk were transferred to the Trinity Cathedral under the leadership of Bishop Alexander.
Did you know that: until the Trinity Church was built, the Church of the Resurrection of Christ was considered a cathedral.
Russian Orthodox Church
Since the 16th century, the main temple of Bryansk was the Intercession Cathedral, located in the Bryansk Kremlin. In 1798, by decree of the Holy Synod, cathedral status was given to the Transfiguration Church (1694-1697) of the Spaso-Polikarpov Monastery, abolished in 1766, and renamed in this regard to Pokrovsky.
In 1862, the temple was dismantled, and in its place a new cathedral was erected, the construction of which took more than three decades (in 1876 the right side chapel was consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, in 1879 - the left one, in the name of Martyr John the Warrior, in 1897 - the main altar in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord). Since 1920, after the formation of the Bryansk diocese, the Intercession Cathedral became a cathedral, but already in 1924 it was closed and destroyed. The building, used as a club and an anti-religious museum, was badly damaged during the Great Patriotic War and was demolished in the early 1960s. In 1968, the bell tower was also blown up. Now on this territory there is a cinema and concert hall “Friendship”, and in memory of the cathedral, a chapel in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, consecrated in 2002, was erected in its place.
Since 2002, negotiations began with the administration about the location of the future cathedral. In 2004, the diocese was allocated a plot of land for the construction of a cathedral - in the historical and geographical center of Bryansk, next to the cathedral church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ, on the territory that once belonged to the ancient Resurrection nunnery. From that time on, the Divine Liturgy and other open-air ceremonies were repeatedly celebrated on the site of the future altar.
On May 30, 2005, at the request of Bishop Theophylact of Bryansk and Sevsk, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of blessed memory blessed the construction of the cathedral in honor of the Life-Giving Trinity, and a little later - the cathedral spiritual and educational complex. In the same year, the regional public fund “Bryansk Cathedral” was formed, and design and research work began.
Since 2010, at the request of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus', work has been carried out mainly with the help of Gazprom OJSC, as well as with funds from Moscow benefactors and residents of the Bryansk region. In past years, during services in all churches of the diocese, a special petition was raised “For the benefactors, beautifiers, donors and builders of the Bryansk Cathedral.” Every week in the Church of the Resurrection, at the relics of the Venerable Prince Oleg of Bryansk, the clergy of the diocese read an akathist to the Holy Life-Giving Trinity. In all churches of the diocese, circles were installed to collect donations for the revival of the Bryansk Cathedral.
In 2007, on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the foundation of the lower tier of the future cathedral was laid and consecrated.
On May 23, 2010, on the feast of the Holy Trinity, Bishop Theophylact celebrated the first Divine Liturgy in the lower tier of the Bryansk Cathedral. Then the Divine Liturgy in the lower tier of the cathedral was celebrated on the day of the celebration of the Synaxis of the Bryansk Saints, on Christmas and Easter.
In 2011, the main stage of construction of the cathedral complex was completed: the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Peresvet bell tower and a wooden church in honor of the new martyrs and confessors of Bryansk. In the same year, the thrones of the lower tier of the cathedral and temple were consecrated in the name of the new martyrs and confessors of Bryansk.
On June 24, 2011, on the day of the celebration in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “It is Worthy to Eat,” a dome and a cross were erected on the Peresvet cathedral bell tower.
On June 26, 2011, during his visit to the Bryansk diocese, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' visited the cathedral.
On December 16, 2011, a bronze monument to the Venerable Martyr Alexander Peresvet was erected under the Peresvet bell tower; in 2012 it was moved behind its walls.
May 24, 2012, on the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord and the Day of Remembrance of Sts. equal to app. Methodius and Kirill, teachers of Slovenia (the namesake of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill), the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in the upper tier of the Bryansk Cathedral, which was led by Bishop Alexander of Bryansk and Sevsk.
On June 23, 2012, in the cathedral complex, a ceremonial transfer of the relics of the Reverend Prince Oleg of Bryansk from the cathedral church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ to the cathedral in the name of the Holy Trinity took place. The transfer ceremony and service were led by Bishop Alexander. The shrine was installed in the center of the upper tier of the cathedral.
By June 2012, the internal and external decoration of the cathedral and the bell tower, the height of which is about 70 meters, was completed, and landscaping of the territory was completed. The area of the lower tier of the Cathedral is 1000 m2, the upper tier is 882 m2.
On July 1, 2012, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' performed the rite of great consecration of the throne of the upper tier of the cathedral.
Holy relics in Trinity Cathedral
Any church in our great country preserves the holy relics of martyrs, confessors, saints and other saints. The relics of the Reverend Prince Oleg of Bryansk are kept in this temple. Orthodox people come to pray and ask the saint for help. However, the most common request among all is for health (cure from any ailments), as well as for family well-being and prosperity.
The relics of Prince Oleg Bryansky were transferred to the Bryansk Cathedral in the Name of the Holy Trinity from the temple in honor of the Resurrection of Christ. The service and the entire ceremony were led by Bishop Alexander of Bryansk and Sevsk
In addition, the cathedral contains the relics of the saints, patrons of family and marriage, Peter and Fevronia, they were brought and donated from the Holy Trinity Convent of Murom. Everyone who wants to keep their family intact asks for wisdom and help in everyday family matters, understanding and the ability to live in peace with their family.
In the shrine, where the relics of 33 saints are kept, there are the relics of John the Baptist, John Chrysostom, Seraphim of Sarov, Mary Magdalene, Sergius of Radonezh and many others.
Youth Ministry
Young people actively take part in the spiritual life of Bryansk. There is an Orthodox youth movement in the Trinity Cathedral of this city. Its participants are young people aged 11 to 35 years. The most important thing is that young girls and boys themselves want and strive to raise their cultural and moral level, engage in self-education, gain new knowledge and deeply study history.
The Orthodox Volunteer Movement is unique in that it unites the Orthodox youth of Bryansk. Any interested young man or girl aged 16 to 35 years can join the ranks of Volunteers and take part in events that interest him or her
A youth ministry was created in Trinity Cathedral in the same year when the temple was consecrated. Social service of the Russian Orthodox Church and participation in liturgies is the main mission of this movement. It is very important that young people understand that spiritual and moral development is so necessary in the present, very difficult time, when in the media and other sources one can find the complete destruction of any moral principles.
Orthodox education of people, thanks to the youth movement of the Trinity Cathedral of Bryansk, helps not to forget the moral foundations of every person’s life.
Please note: youth ministry is a fairly new phenomenon for the church, but it has already shown positive results and has been highly appreciated among the city population and clergy.
Every day, the methods of work of the youth ministry are improved and supplemented so that its goal and mission are fully justified, and the activities of the movement have certain fruits.
Interesting fact: Divine Liturgies are held for children on Sunday mornings (usually at 9 o'clock). During their celebration, communion takes place, and then, at the end, tea drinking with a sweet table.
After this, children are given the opportunity to engage in interesting and educational activities - arts and crafts, paper modeling, singing, etc.
Bryansk Intercession Cathedral in Soviet times
The “military” status of the Intercession Church provoked its rapid abolition after the 1917 revolution. It is known that already in 1918 there were no services in the Church of the Intercession, and by the end of the 1920s it was disfigured - the dome and bell tower were demolished, the interior decoration was completely destroyed.
The interior of the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary was adapted for the archive of the October Revolution, and the fact that quite recently this was the house of God was now only reminded by the characteristic elevation of one of the parts of the building.

Intercession Cathedral of Bryansk brief history
The first, still wooden Church of the Intercession, was built under Prince Roman Mikhailovich Bryansk, and the name of the hill where the Bryansk fortress stood took after the name of the church.
In 1500, Bryansk was taken by the Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan III, annexing it to Moscow; The fortress church then turned into the Intercession Cathedral of Bryansk .
In the 17th century, after the Russian Time of Troubles, the Intercession Cathedral was rebuilt in stone, and it acquired a familiar appearance.
The Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bryansk belongs to the popular type of pillarless five-domed church at that time, with the side chapters oriented not along the corners of the roof, but to the cardinal points, in which Ukrainian influence is seen. At the same time, the shape of the domes and the ratio of sizes (all five domes are quite small, and the central one is slightly larger than the side ones) are characteristic of Great Russian architecture.
Another recognizable feature of the era is that the temple was built on two floors, with a warm lower floor and an unheated, but more spacious and bright upper floor. The upper church was consecrated in honor of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, inheriting the previous dedications of the local churches - it was under the name of the Intercession that the church that stood here was always known to the residents of Bryansk. The lower winter chapel was consecrated in the name of St. Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow and All Rus', Wonderworker. The saint, who lived in the 14th century, visited Bryansk; it is known that he served the liturgy in the old Church of the Intercession, when it was not yet a cathedral.
The reconstruction of the Intercession Cathedral in stone coincided with the renovation of the Bryansk fortress itself. Peter I attached considerable importance to Bryansk not only as a trading city, but also as a military center. True, things never came to the point of a direct military threat to the city under Peter, and the new fortress was never used for its intended purpose. By the 20th century it had fallen into ruins, and the Church of the Intercession finally ceased to be a serf church.
Throughout the 18th century, the Intercession Church remained the cathedral of the Bryansk diocese. But in 1798, they decided to move the see of the Bryansk bishops to a more convenient place, namely, to the Transfiguration Church of the former Spaso-Polikarpov Monastery, which had by that time been abolished. The Intercession Cathedral turned into an ordinary parish church.
From 1876 until the Bolshevik Revolution, the now “old” Intercession Cathedral actually served as a garrison church. On the other hand, this role was predetermined by fate itself - after all, the temple from its very foundation was located within the walls of the fortress.
