This is an artistic monument; in our country there is no other icon of this type, and it must not only be protected in a special way, but also made into public property, which is impossible to achieve in the space of a church.”

As Vladimir Gusev, director of the Russian Museum, said in a short conversation with a TANR correspondent, the fuss around this topic was raised in vain. “There is no subject for conversation,” Gusev said. “Nobody confiscates anything, it’s just a wave of hysteria and inappropriate conversations.” They promise to announce the official position of the museum management on this issue next week.

Levon Nersesyan, a specialist in ancient Russian art, senior researcher at the State Tretyakov Gallery, believes that this situation was provoked by the position of the leadership of the State Russian Museum. “Shmakov has nothing to do with it; anyone could have taken his place. The Church of the Mikhailovsky Castle was founded along with the castle in 1797 and consecrated in 1800. It was not intended for hundreds of believers, but was created as a small temple for the imperial family, purely private. The interior of the Church of the Archangel Michael, created in the 19th century, is in no way suitable for an icon of pre-Mongol writing from the second half of the 12th century: the church has preserved unique elements of decoration: a huge semi-circular image of the patron saint, painted by the Polish artist Franciszek Smuglewicz on the eastern wall of the temple, and the iconostasis - a masterpiece Russian stone-cutting art, decorated with jasper, lapis lazuli and multi-colored marble, miraculously preserved to this day, the church is also decorated with powerful granite columns with gilded bases and capitals, which originally supported the choir. Is there really a place there for the Golden-haired Angel, laconic, with huge eyes, with golden hair - each has a thin thread of golden leaf running through it, making the hair shine with heavenly divine light?

- This icon has nothing to do with the premises of the castle church - neither historical nor plot. The story of Angel Golden Hair began to gain scandalous momentum. And this is done by a man who has already taken one of the most valuable icons from the Russian Museum and did not keep not only his word, but also the word of the patriarch, who also promised to return it to us. History of the image.

Researchers attribute the icon to the 12th century, to the Novgorod school. It was probably written by a monk of one of the Novgorod monasteries and was there in the Deisis rank (a row of icons). The word Deisis is Greek and means prayer. The Deisis is located in the central row (of the five classical rows in the Russian iconostasis). In the center is the Savior. Standing before him in prayer for peace are the Mother of God and John the Baptist. And then there are the figures of the Archangels - Michael and Gabriel, the saints.

The icon was painted in the 12th century, i.e. in the pre-Mongol period of Russian history. Very few such unique monuments have survived. It was found in the 18th century by historian G.D. Filimonov in the Kremlin, in the bell tower among objects that were intended for destruction. It most likely came here in the 16th century, under Ivan the Terrible, who took a lot of shrines from Novgorod to Moscow. Nowadays, the icon is kept in the Russian Museum of St. Petersburg.
