History of the icon
According to ancient Russian legends, the name of the “Passionate” icon of the Virgin Mary is due to the appearance of one very interesting and at the same time mysterious incident that occurred in the Nizhny Novgorod region with one woman.
Her name was Ekaterina. For a long time she lived in incredible torment, which was associated with the appearance of terrible demons in her life, causing severe seizures in the woman. During their temporary disappearance, she did not stop praying to the Heavenly Queen. And for providing any possible help, Catherine promised that in case of healing, she would go to serve the Lord God, forever connecting her life with monasticism. Hearing the prayers of a needy person, the Mother of God decided to help, completely freeing Catherine from her past suffering.
Feeling like a completely healthy and independent woman, she continued to live, forgetting about the promise she had once made. And then one day, on a dark night, the Mother of God herself appears directly into her house, asking her to tell other people about everything she saw, so that they stop abusing bad habits and bestial behavior, continuing their lives in chaste and pure abstinence. This is what the image of the “Passionate” icon of the Mother of God symbolizes. This time, Catherine again did not listen, and then the Mother of God paralyzed her. As a result, having reached the temple with the help of close people, Catherine managed to find the ancient shrine of the “Passionate” Mother of God. And, having repented of all the greedy and gluttonous sins she had committed, the woman was again completely healed.
Effective Prayer
Very often people pray to God and icons, wanting to receive something. But many hours of prayers turn out to be ineffective, and a person may become completely disappointed, which is wrong.

Description of the shrine
This artistic image presented on the sacred canvas belongs to the “Hodegetria” type, that is, an icon capable of pointing or directing to the true path. The image shows how the head of little Jesus Christ is turned towards the angel, holding a cross in his hands. His image, like the image of another angel located on the left, symbolizes the suffering to which Jesus will be doomed in the future. On the “Passionate” icon of the Mother of God, one can clearly see how the right hand of the son of God clasps the finger of the Mother of God, thus showing his desire to receive support and protection.
The main meaning of the “passionate” icon is the suffering that will repeatedly accompany little Jesus Christ. At the same time, the Mother of God believes that everything bad is part of the path of life that must be passed. After all, everything that happens to us is the will of God, and we must not be afraid of his obedience.

Once upon a time, a woman named Ekaterina lived in the Novgorod province. From her youth, she was tormented by incurable nervous attacks, because of which those around her began to consider Catherine a leper and possessed by demons.

Life among people became a burden for the poor peasant woman, and she began to earnestly pray to the Mother of God for healing. The merciful Mother of God heard the prayers of the needy woman and granted her healing. Katerina’s recovery was given on the condition that she would go preach the word of God through the streets. Also, the holy fool had to stop living with her husband in sin and committing adultery.
For her recovery, the unfortunate woman promised the saint that she would go to a monastery and take monastic vows. But the woman was afraid that preaching about God would give her a bad reputation, so she kept silent about the reason for her recovery. For this, she was soon struck down by paralysis.
The unfortunate woman realized her mistake and began to pray to the Virgin even more zealously. The Noble Mother of God appeared to Katerina in a dream and said: “And this is the second time I will grant you healing, but you must find an icon painter in the city who has my Image and pray for it.”
The woman went to Master Gregory and began to pray passionately at the image of the Most Pure One. For this, the woman was granted complete healing by God. It was from this image that the Passion Icon was subsequently painted, rumors about which quickly spread throughout the area.
