History and meaning of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God, what it helps with and how to pray correctly

Introduction to the Church of the Holy Mother of God

On December 4, believers celebrate a great church holiday - the introduction of the Holy Mother of God into the temple.
It is on this day that the moment when Mary was given by her parents to serve God is celebrated. On the very first day, the high priest Zechariah led the girl to the sanctuary, where she could subsequently enter every year on December 4th. The girl spent 12 years in the temple, after which she independently decided to preserve her virginity in the name of serving God. The significant day began to be celebrated by the Church from ancient times. This is due to the fact that thanks to her parents’ introduction to the Temple, the Virgin Mary began her path to serving God, who allowed people on earth to receive their Savior. Services take place in all churches on this day. The prayers said on this day by believers give praise to the Ever-Virgin Mary and ask for the intercession of the Mother of God before the Almighty for each person praying.

Of course, such a great holiday associated with a significant event in the church world was reflected in icon painting. On icons dedicated to the Introduction, the Virgin Mary is always depicted in the center. The other characters are the parents on one side and the high priest Zacharias, who meets the girl. Icons often depict the steps to the Temple; it was these that little Mary overcame without anyone’s help.

In the calendar cycle, this church holiday coincides with the end of the autumn season and the beginning of the winter period.

The Russian Orthodox people also celebrated on this day:

  • Celebration of a young family;
  • Opening the gates to winter;
  • Importation.

Folk signs on this day:

  • After this day, it was forbidden to dig in the street, so women had to take care to stock up on clay for household needs;
  • From this day until the ninth Thursday, rolling pins should not be used to beat out laundry, otherwise bad weather could be caused;
  • On the holiday, it was forbidden to engage in work associated with beating and friction; it was forbidden to clean and dig the ground.

Since this is a major religious holiday, it was necessary to spend it in harmony and peace with the people around. It is very good on this day to invite close friends or go to visit them. Since the Introduction always falls on the Nativity Fast, on this day it was allowed to diversify the table with fish dishes and drink a little wine.

Days of Honor

There are certain days on which the icon is venerated.

21 July

The icon is venerated on July 21 every year. It was at this time that people are believed to have seen the miraculous image of the Mother of God for the first time.

November 4

At the beginning of November, something else is celebrated - the icon’s help in expelling the Poles from Russian soil. This date is celebrated in Russia simultaneously with National Unity Day.

^ He rejoices in You

In You, O Gracious One, every creature rejoices, the Council of Angels and the human race, consecrated in the temple and verbal paradise, virgin praise, from whom God was incarnate and the Child was, our God before the world. It is false that Thy throne has been created. And Your womb has made it more spacious than the heavens. Every creature rejoices in You, O Gracious One, glory to you.

* * *

Translation: All creation rejoices in You, O Blessed One: the angelic host and the human race. You are a consecrated temple and a spiritual paradise, the glory of virginity, from which God became incarnate and our Existing God became a Child before all ages. For He turned Your bosom into a throne and made Your womb wider than the heavens. All creation rejoices in You, O Most Gracious One, glory to You!

Psalm 143

Blessed are You, O Lady, for You teach us, Your servants, to fight against the world, the flesh and the devil: against the world, so that we may turn our eyes away from its charms, and not tie our hearts to its vanities; against the flesh, to keep oneself in chastity and not touch the commanded things; against the devil, to understand his temptations and seductions and to resist their actions in every possible way. Oh, all-powerful Lady! We pray to Thee and we will not cease to pray, flash the lightning of Thy power and kindle them, send the arrows of Thy speedy protection and strike them, glorify from the height of Thy holy glory in this battle Thy strong right hand, so that, singing, we, Thy servants, will sing, having been delivered from the evil ones , Your power, glory and praise; Weigh, O Lady, how sinful we are and how much we need Your help; kindle heavenly desires in our hearts and fill us with the spirit of the sweetness of heaven.

PRAYERS OF PLEASURY TO THE HOLY VIRGIN

Prayer 1

To whom shall I cry, Lady? To whom shall I resort in my sorrow, if not to You, Queen of Heaven? Who will accept my cry and my sighing, if not You, Most Immaculate, the hope of Christians and refuge for us sinners? Who will protect You more in adversity? Hear my groaning and incline Your ear to me, the Lady Mother of my God, and do not despise me who requires Your help, and do not reject me, a sinner. Enlighten and teach me, Queen of Heaven; do not depart from me, Thy servant, Lady, for my grumbling, but be my Mother and Intercessor. I entrust myself to Your merciful protection: lead me, a sinner, to a quiet and serene life, so that I may weep for my sins. To whom shall I resort when I am guilty, if not to You, the hope and refuge of sinners, inspired by the hope of Your ineffable mercy and Your bounty? O Lady, Queen of Heaven! You are my hope and refuge, protection and intercession and help. My Queen, Most Offering and Speedy Intercessor, cover my sins with Your intercession, protect me from enemies visible and invisible; soften the hearts of evil people who rebel against me. O Mother of the Lord my Creator! You are the root of virginity and the unfading color of purity. O Mother of God! Give me help to those who are weak with carnal passions and those who are sick at heart, for one thing is Yours and with You the intercession of Your Son and our God; and through Your wonderful intercession may I be delivered from all misfortune and adversity, O Most Immaculate and Glorious Mother of God, Mary. The same with hope I say and cry out: Rejoice, full of grace; Rejoice, Delighted One; Rejoice, Most Blessed One: the Lord is with You!

Prayer 2

My Blessing Queen, my hope, Mother of God, Friend of the orphans and the strange, the Representative of the sorrowing, the Joy of the offended, the Patroness! See my misfortune, see my sorrow, help me as I am weak, feed me as I am strange. Weigh my offense, resolve it as if you will: for I have no other help except You, no other Representative, no good Comforter, only You, O Mother of God, for you will preserve me and cover me forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer 3

O Most Holy Virgin, Mother of the Lord Most High, Intercessor and Protector of all who resort to You! Look down from Thy holy height upon me, a sinner (name), who falls before Thy most pure image; hear my warm prayer and offer it before Your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ; beg Him to illuminate my gloomy soul with the light of His Divine grace, to deliver me from all need, sorrow and illness, to grant me a quiet and peaceful life, physical and mental health, to pacify my suffering heart and heal its wounds, to guide me for good deeds, may my mind be cleansed from vain thoughts, and having taught me to fulfill His commandments, may He deliver me from eternal torment and may He not deprive me of His Heavenly Kingdom. O Most Holy Theotokos! You, “Joy of all who mourn,” hear me, the sorrowful one; You, called “Quenching of Sorrow,” quench my sorrow; You, “Burning Kupino,” save the world and all of us from the harmful fiery arrows of the enemy; You, “Seeker of the Lost,” do not allow me to perish in the abyss of my sins. According to Bose, all my hope and hope is in Tyabo. Be a temporary Intercessor for me in life, and an Intercessor for eternal life before Your Beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Teach me to serve this with faith and love, and to reverently honor You, Most Holy Mother of God, Most Blessed Mary, until the end of my days. Amen.

Prayer to Our Lady

What should I pray to You for, what should I ask of You? You see everything, you know it Yourself: look into my soul and give it what it needs. You, who have endured everything, overcome everything, will understand everything. You, who entwined the Baby in a manger and took Him with Your hands from the Cross, You alone know all the heights of joy, all the oppression of grief. You, who have received the entire human race as adoption, look at me with maternal care. From the snares of sin, lead me to Your Son. I see a tear watering Your face. It’s over me You shed it and let it wash away the traces of my sins. Here I have come, I am standing, I am waiting for Your response, O Mother of God, O All-Singing One, O Lady! I don’t ask for anything, I just stand before You. Only my heart, poor human heart, exhausted in longing for truth, I cast at Your Most Pure feet, Lady! Grant to all who call You to reach the eternal day by You and worship You face to face.

Prayers of repentance to the Most Holy Theotokos

The Mother of God dedicated her earthly life to serving people, although the human race crucified her Son, our Savior. We offer prayers of repentance to the Most Holy Lady, lamenting our sins.

Prayer to the Mother of God 1st

Most Holy Lady Theotokos, the only one most pure in soul and body, the only one who surpasses all purity, chastity and virginity, the only one who has completely become the abode of the complete grace of the all-holy Spirit, the most immaterial power here has incomparably surpassed the purity and holiness of the soul and body, look upon me, vile, unclean, soul and the body that has been denigrated by the filth of the passions of my life, cleanse my passionate mind, make immaculate and order my wandering and blind thoughts, put my feelings in order and guide them, free me from the evil and vile habit of unclean prejudices and passions that torment me, stop all sin acting in me, grant to my darkened and damned mind sobriety and prudence to correct my inclinations and falls, so that, freed from sinful darkness, I will be vouchsafed with boldness to glorify and sing songs of You, the only Mother of the true Light - Christ, our God; because you, alone with Him and in Him, are blessed and glorified by every invisible and visible creation, now, and always, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary 2nd

Undefiled, Unblessed, Imperishable, Most Pure, Unbridled Bride of God, Mother of God Mary, Lady of Peace and My Hope! Look upon me, a sinner, at this hour, and from Thy pure blood Thou hast unknowingly given birth to the Lord Jesus Christ, make me merciful through Thy motherly prayers; The one who was ripeningly condemned and wounded in the heart with the weapon of sadness, wound my soul with Divine love! The mountaineer who mourned him in chains and abuse, grant me tears of contrition; With His free conduct to death, my soul was seriously ill, free me from illness, so that I may glorify You, worthily glorified forever. Amen.

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary 3rd

O zealous, compassionate intercessor of the Lord Mother! I come running to You, a cursed man and a sinner above all others: listen to the voice of my prayer, and hear my cry and groaning. For my iniquities have exceeded my head, and I, like a ship in the abyss, am plunging into the sea of my sins. But You, All-Good and Merciful Lady, do not despise me, desperate and perishing in sins; have mercy on me, who repent of my evil deeds, and turn my lost, accursed soul to the right path. On You, my Lady Theotokos, I place all my hope. Thou, Mother of God, preserve and keep me under Thy roof, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos on Sunday, St. Nil Sorsky

O all-merciful Virgin Mother of God, Mother of generosity and love for mankind, my most beloved hope and hope! O Mother of the sweetest, firstborn and all-surpassing love of the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, Lover of mankind and my God, Light of my darkened soul! I fall down to You, a great sinner, and I pray to You, the source of mercy and the abyss of generosity and love for mankind: have mercy on me, I cry out to You painfully, have mercy on me, all the wounded, who fell into cruel robbers, and from clothes, clothed me in nakedness, Father, woe is me, naked In the same way, my wounds became stale and rotten in the face of my madness. But, my Lady Theotokos, I humbly pray to You: look at me with Your merciful eye, and do not disdain me, all that is darkened, all that is defiled, all that is immersed in the mire of pleasures and passions, that is fallen in the rage and cannot rise: have mercy on me, and give me a helping hand, raised me from the depths of sin. O my joy! Deliver me from those who have bypassed me; enlighten Thy face upon Thy servant, save the perishing, raise up the fallen: for thou canst do all things, as the Mother of the Almighty God. Pour upon me the oil of Thy mercy, and give me the wine of tenderness; You truly have only one hope in the acquisitions of my life. Do not reject me, who flows to You, but see my sorrow, O Virgin, and the desire of my soul, and accept this and save me, Intercessor of my salvation.

History of origin and acquisition

The history of the origin of the Kazan Icon is amazing and sometimes even mystical. The Mother of God first appeared in 1579 in the city of Kazan, which at that time had been taken by the troops of Ivan the Terrible for almost 30 years. As it is written in the letters, the Most Holy One appeared to one girl, the daughter of a archer of the royal army, and asked her to find her face among the ashes.

An amazing phenomenon occurred - after repeated attempts to persuade the church ministers to start digging to find the face, the girl herself began the search. And she immediately succeeded - an image wrapped in cloth appeared to the world. They found him on one of the fire pits. They say that it was on this site that one of the most famous churches in Russia was built - the Virgin Mary Convent.

But we also cannot fail to note the story of Patriarch Hermogenes, who actively defended the icon of the Mother of Kazan. It was he who, after the outbreak of hostilities with the Poles, began to form an uprising in Nizhny Novgorod. Kazan residents joined the militia. It was they who carried Kazan before them - the Mother of God of Kazan became a kind of leader of the people’s struggle.

The Kazan Mother of God also appeared in the War of 1812. They say that Kutuzov then prayed in front of the image, as a result of which the Russian army was able to defeat the French.

The original icon was constantly in the Mother of God convent - exactly where the first discovery took place. But during the revolutionary years the icon was stolen. There are many versions of where the first authentic icon disappeared, but none of them can be completely confirmed or refuted.

There are many lists of icons distributed throughout Russia, and each of the images is connected. The most famous list in the militia, St. Petersburg. The last event associated with the icon was its placement from the Vatican to the Kazan Cathedral. Believers believe that it was in 2005 that the people found the icon for the second time.

The power of prayer to the Virgin Mary

People believe that prayer to the Mother of God can work miracles. One of the proofs is the history of the holiday “Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. At the end of the first century, Prince Oleg and his squads attacked Byzantium. In Constantinople, in the Blachernae Church, believers gathered to pray to the Mother of God to repel the enemy. At four o'clock in the morning, Blessed Andrew the Fool pointed out to his disciple the Mother of God, illuminated with radiance, surrounded by saints, among whom he recognized John the Baptist and John the Theologian. The Mother of God, on her knees, prayed with the believers, shedding tears, and then took the veil from her head and spread it over the worshippers. The Slavic troops retreated from the city for unknown reasons.

St. Sergius of Radonezh, abbot of the Russian land, prayed in front of the icon of the Mother of God in 1385. Suddenly, in the Radiance of divine light, the Mother of God herself appeared before him, accompanied by the apostles John and Peter. The abbot fell to his knees. The Most Holy One raised him up, calmed him down and promised to take care of his disciples and the temple even after the death of Father Sergius.

Our life is a complete miracle, you just have to believe in it. For someone who believes and daily thinks of the Mother of God, this is a very powerful prayer. He receives the protection of the Queen of Heaven herself.

Gratitude to Our Lady

As a rule, when everything is good in life, we believe that it should be so. But we must remember that this is not always the case; you should never forget about gratitude. It should be expressed in prayers to the Mother of God for happiness, joy, health, good luck. To do this, you need to read special prayers that are of a grateful nature. They are read with love, faith, and sincerity. They will erase bad thoughts, grievances and open their hearts to new positive experiences.

These prayers give thanks for help, resolution of disputes in the family, for the recovery, health and happiness of children. You should start your day with gratitude to the Virgin Mary, and she will cleanse your soul, give you strength and a good mood. The appeals also help people themselves to move away from daily stressful situations. The canon of thanksgiving to the Most Holy Theotokos is best suited for this.

When and how to read the prayer “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice”

It is better to read the prayer “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice” in front of the icon of the Mother of God. The prayer is short and can be read, if necessary, at any time and in any place, most importantly with faith, with all your soul, thoughtfully.

The significance of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God is difficult to overestimate for the Russian people. First of all, this icon means the unprecedented faith of people in the divine principle, in the fact that higher beings will help in the most difficult times. That is why the Mother of God appeared in troubled, difficult times, during times of bloody wars and battles, epidemics and diseases that took thousands of human lives.

In front of the icon they almost always pray not only for the protection of their family, but also for their people. Since ancient times, it has been the custom that during battles the Mother of God is called upon to protect the Motherland from invaders.

But besides this, it also protects home and family members from enemies, bad influences. Its meaning is also favorable if you hang the icon near a baby’s crib. It is believed that then he will be reliably protected from evil spirits. But besides this, the Mother of God, like any woman, helps in matters of love. If a girl wants to get happily married, give birth to a child, or a wife wants to renew a quality relationship with her husband, then it is worth hanging the icon at the head of the bed. The positive results of this will not take long to arrive.

You, “Joy of all who mourn,” hear me, the sorrowful one; You, called “Quenching of Sorrow”, quench my sorrow; You, “Burning Kupino”, save the world and all of us from the harmful fiery arrows of the enemy; You, “Seeker of the Lost,” do not allow me to perish in the abyss of my sins. Amen.

The history of the appearance of the Ostrobramsk Icon of the Mother of God

The shrine is considered to have come to the territory of the modern Baltic states back in the 14th century. Some experts in ancient icon painting consider the icon of the Blessed Virgin of Ostrobramskaya to be painted in the Byzantine manner, others find in it later traces of Dutch painters. It is known that the icon was brought from Korsun (present-day Kherson) by Prince Olgerd as a gift to his first wife Maria, then the second wife transferred the image to the Trinity Church of the local monastery.

After laying new fortified walls around the city, protecting it from possible enemies, the icon was moved to the gates of these walls, which is where the name of the image of the Virgin Mary came from. Orthodox tradition says that the Ostrobramskaya icon itself moved to the gate in order to reveal its miracle before people of little faith.

What types of prayers are there?

Prayers according to their purpose are divided into:

  • laudatory (the person praying admires the mercy, courage, wisdom of God; prayer was created for the moral preparation of a person, for his awareness of the unity of all things on earth);
  • supplicants (through petition and prayer, a person strengthens his spirit and body to fight life’s difficulties - the Creator helps to understand that the inner strength of the person praying is much greater than he thinks);
  • intercession (turning to heaven, the person praying asks not for himself, but for a loved one, for a soul mate; often such prayer helps those who are not able to independently conduct a dialogue with God);
  • repentant (realizing our sinfulness and guilt, we can repent and tell the Lord about our innermost thoughts, about tormenting remorse - the Creator is omnipresent and merciful);
  • gratitude (you need to thank the Lord for perfect and imperfect miracles, because He is the source of life, the source of love, the source of joy).

Features of iconography

The Mother of God looks shoulder-length - that is, she belongs to the type of shoulder art. The icon is as human-like as possible. This is not due to the fact that the Mother of God has a human appearance and helps people as much as possible.

Rather, there is another meaning - to show that with the help of human essence one can also rise and draw closer to Christ.

The image is frontal, that is, the figure’s face is turned. But there is a slight shift of the head towards the baby. This gesture expresses all the maternal tenderness and care that certainly appears in any woman after the birth of her own child. The Mother of God holds the baby Jesus in one hand, while with his right hand he blesses her. The second hand is covered with clothes, it is not visible.

The uniqueness is that the figures on it are depicted in such a way that even despite the tilt of their heads, both are looking at the praying person. This emphasizes that an invisible connection arises between the person praying and the Mother of God, Jesus, who is depicted on the icon, and his words will certainly be heard.

It is worth understanding that the Mother of God is one of the closest people to Jesus. Just as the words of his mother greatly influence an ordinary person, so Jesus is influenced by the Mother of God. Therefore, by praying, a person frees his inner strength. The Mother of God will pray to Jesus for everyone, without giving preference.
