Holiday
The Ascension of the Virgin Mary is celebrated as a church holiday (in most countries - August 15). There is a tradition on this day to bring the first fruits of the new harvest as a gift to churches and chapels dedicated to St. Mary. The holiday is accompanied by solemn services, church processions and theatrical performances. From this day begins the thirty-day “Frauendreißiger”.
In the Gallican liturgy, the Ascension is celebrated on January 18th.
Copts celebrate it on August 22 and call it “The Taking of the Virgin Mary into Heavenly Glory.” In medieval Bavaria, the Ascension was celebrated on September 13, although some dioceses (in Brandenburg, Mainz, Frankfurt, etc.) celebrated it on the 23rd, citing the revelations of St. Elizabeth of Schonau and St. Bertrand, according to which Mary was ascended to heaven on the fortieth day after of death.
