Why are the domes of Orthodox churches different colors?

You've probably noticed that church domes are most often covered with gold leaf. But there are temples in which the roofs are blue or green. The Orthodox Church in Russia does not have canons that would regulate the colors of the dome covering. Therefore, at present, the material for construction is chosen based on financial capabilities. If funds do not allow covering the domes with gold, the roof is made of metal or colored tiles. Ultimately, this point is not so important for believers.

According to the priests, there is no sin in using scrap materials to build temples. Simply, the gilding of the domes is a standard of church architecture. This is due to the fact that gold in human consciousness is associated with the incorruptibility of God’s Being.

What does the golden color of the domes symbolize?

The color gold in the Orthodox tradition is a symbol of heavenly glory. That is why in our country there were golden domes at the main temples and at the temples dedicated to Christ and the twelve feasts. It is natural that the main temple of modern Russia, the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior, has domes of exactly this color. The domes of the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God (St. Basil's Cathedral), the main temple of Red Square, were also originally gold.

For an Orthodox person, gold is primarily a symbol of eternity, incorruptibility, royalty and heavenly glory. In this regard, we can remember that one of the three gifts brought by the wise men to the baby Jesus, along with frankincense and myrrh, was gold.

Where did the custom come from?

The tradition of covering domes with gold came to Rus' from Byzantium. At that time, Russian Christians were greatly impressed by the largest temple in Constantinople, called the Hagia Sophia. Imagine that the empire's income took three years to build it. Thus, Emperor Justinian wanted to surpass King Solomon himself, who built the temple in Jerusalem. The emperor had a desire to cover the foundation, walls and domes of Sophia with gold. But he was warned against such a step by the sages, who predicted the coming of poor kings to Constantinople who would destroy the temple to the ground.

In addition, it is associated with immortality, faith in the souls of people and greatness.

City of forty forties. The most interesting churches in Moscow If the color of the church is green, then it was most likely consecrated in honor of the saint, and if it is yellow, then it was built in honor of the saint.

However, we must understand that in this case we are talking about traditions, not rules. In our lives, it happens that the covering of the dome depends on the financial resources of the parish. And it happens that climatic conditions make their own adjustments. For example, the Orthodox Church in honor of the Holy Trinity in Antarctica, not far from the Russian polar station Bellingshausen, does not have green domes. It is made entirely of wood and its color is natural. Wood in Antarctica does not rot, since in this territory there are no bacteria dangerous to this material. Accordingly, there is no need for additional processing. This temple is the patriarchal courtyard of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and the southernmost Orthodox church in the world.

Scary gold

After the arrival of Orthodoxy in Rus', the question arose about the need to build churches. But on our lands there were no craftsmen and architects who could do this. It is for this reason that we had to invite “Romean” craftsmen. It was they who introduced the tradition of covering domes with gold.

An interesting fact is that such a custom has not taken hold in any other denomination. One of the first churches with a golden dome in Rus' was the church in Nerl, built in the twelfth century in honor of the Intercession of the Virgin Mary. By order of Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, the dome was covered with gold.

At that time, such a covering had not only a sacred meaning, but also a very practical one. The thing is that roofing iron did not yet know how to anodize. It rusted very quickly. And the gold-covered dome could stand for at least a hundred years without repair. Gold reliably protected the metal surface from corrosion.

It must be said that the profession of a goldsmith at that time was incredibly harmful, since in the Middle Ages the roof was covered with a mixture of mercury and gold, after which the metal was heated so that the mercury vapor would leave. A similar procedure was repeated several times. Therefore, the masters lived very little. History records the fact that in the nineteenth century, during the gilding of Isaac in St. Petersburg, 60 craftsmen died from poisoning. In total, a whole centner of gold was spent on bathing.

What do the other colors of the domes and walls of temples mean?

If a church has white walls, then it is dedicated to the Transfiguration or Ascension of Jesus Christ. The blue temple is dedicated to the Mother of God. If it is painted red, then most likely it is a martyr. Yellow churches are dedicated to saints, and green churches to saints.

The spherical dome in the Orthodox tradition symbolizes eternity. The Romans began building churches with similar domes: in the 2nd century they learned to build large-area ceilings without supports. The Roman pantheon built in this way from 128 AD has survived to this day. e. In Russia, spherical domes crown Moscow's Yelokhovsky Cathedral, the baptismal site of Alexander Pushkin.

The helmet-shaped dome refers to the words of the Apostle Paul: “Put on the whole armor of God...and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” Such domes are typical of Russian pre-Mongol architecture: they decorate, for example, the Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir and the Church of Peter and Paul in Smolensk.

The onion dome in Orthodox architecture is the embodiment of prayer, the desire for heaven. According to researcher Evgeny Trubetskoy, such a dome on the base of the drum resembles a candle flame. Onion-shaped domes are characteristic of Russian architecture of the 16th–17th centuries. Examples of churches with similar domes are the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist in Uglich and the churches of the Rostov Kremlin.

A tent, instead of a traditional dome, is interpreted in Christianity as an image of the Virgin Mary or the Light of Heaven. Tent churches were common in the 16th century, although similar churches were built earlier. They were usually built from wood: it was very difficult to replicate the structure of a tent in stone. The most famous example of tent architecture is the Church of the Ascension in Kolomenskoye. It was built by order of Prince Vasily III in honor of the birth of the long-awaited heir to the throne, the future Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible.

Titanium nitride will not replace gold

They still resort to gilding domes today. This is done both by electroplating and by covering the domes with gold leaf, which is glued to the varnish, which in turn is applied to the primer. Each of these methods has its own advantages: applying gold leaf makes the dome perfectly round and allows it to be restored if damaged. With the galvanic gilding method, if the dome is damaged, it has to be remade. In the modern world, technology does not stand still, and now “golden” domes are made by covering them with a layer of titanium nitride. It is also durable and not as expensive as gold. Titanium nitride was first used in the history of modern Russia during the restoration of the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Gilding the domes was then recognized by Mayor Yuri Luzhkov as too expensive, and he ordered the choice to be made of titanium nitride. In the aggressive atmosphere of the metropolis, the fake “gold” turned red after three years. However, in the modest province, titanium domes continue to be in demand. True, some clergy believe that the shine of the new material is devoid of the inner dignity that is inherent in real gold.
