Orthodox. He defines his socio-political views as statist and imperial. According to Dmitry Volodikhin, “Patriotism is the main refuge of decent people.” He is one of the modern theorists of the civilizational approach in Russian historical science (collective monograph “Tradition and Russian Civilization”).

Since 1997, he has been active as a critic (magazines “If”, “World of Fantasy”, “Star Road”, “Reality of Fantasy”, “Nameless Star”, “Fantastica”, “Znamya”, “Moscow”, newspaper “Book Review” " and etc.). He owns the famous phrase: “Some books need to be read standing up!” In 1990 - 1991 attended WTO MPF seminars. In 1999 he became one of the founders and leaders of the literary and philosophical group “Bastion”. Member of the Russian Writers' Union. Member of the Karamzin Club. Since the summer of 2008, he has been working as deputy editor-in-chief of N.S. Mikhalkov’s magazine “Svoy”. Dmitry Volodikhin is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Science and Religion.

The works of Dmitry Volodikhin can be classified as both fantasy ("The Afternoon of Tonight", "Children of Leopard") and science fiction (the trilogy "Kill the Peacemaker" - "Conquistador" - "The Valley of the Shadow of Death", partly the novel "Volunteer") . He himself defines a significant part of them as “sacred fiction”, being one of the founders and theoreticians of this direction. Compiler and publisher of the almanac “Sacred Fantasy”. Volodikhin, in particular, wrote: “We are building a fantastic assumption as a miracle, not substantiated by anything or anyone in our native reality.” The struggle between good and evil, understood in a religious sense, is the main content of the works of “sacred science fiction writers.” For Volodikhin, this understanding is Christian. The confrontation of God's servants with the devil's onslaught and temptation becomes the main theme of his works. And even in “sci-fi” things, this meaning is read by an attentive reader. Among the books of Dmitry Volodikhin, one can especially highlight the novel “Children of Leopard”, in the preface to which G.A. Eliseev wrote: “in this book Volodikhin managed to synthesize his best achievements in the field of “sacred fiction” and bring to literary brilliance the techniques worked out on the pages fantastic texts about the future." But the later final chord of the “cosmic” epic, the deep philosophical and ethical novel “The Valley of the Shadow of Death,” was the next step in the same direction. In 2007, the novel about the Civil War, Volunteer, received a lively response.

Laureate of the 1st Prize for Young Scientists of Moscow State University for 1995 and the Presidential Prize in Education for 2002. For critical and journalistic articles about (2000), the magazine “If” (2002), “Golden Caduceus” (ZM-2002), “Silver Roskon" (2003). In 2007, he was awarded the Titus Livius Prize (established by the Alternative History Forum) for his novel “The Volunteer.” He took 1st and 3rd place in the Fantkritik competition in 2005 and 2007, respectively.
