Saint Gerasimos of Jordan. The man with whom the lion walked calmly

Hymns of St. Rev. Gerasim, also on the Jordan. Religions - Guide to Israel

Irmos : Let us praise the Lord, who led His people through the Red Sea, for He alone was gloriously glorified. Christ bestowed the glory of immortality and incorruptibility on you, Gerasima, to the one who has made a good deed.

Having the Light-Giver, who listened to your prayers, you diminished the darkness of demons, Father Gerasima. With the streams of your tears, like a tree, father, fat, you pronounced the fruits of immortality, to the God-Wise Gerasima.

Theotokos : Most Pure Mother of God, make the illnesses of my heart painless, like Christ, who gave birth to the mind and the words.

Song 3

Irmos : You are the affirmation of those who flow to You, Lord, You are the light of the darkened, and my spirit sings of You. Free crucifixion To the one who endured, the venerable one, following, was completely crucified by life and passion. Thou art able, strengthened by the omnipotent, wise, beckoning, trample down all the strong nets, Gerasim.

With humble wisdom and a humble, wise spirit, you have strengthened yourself; you have completely humbled the soul-stifling passions. Like the great sun, your miracles have illuminated all the hearts of those who truly praise you.

Theotokos : You gave birth, the All-Immaculate One, co-throne and co-natural with the Father of the Son, who showed everyone the entrances of life.

Sedalen, voice 4:

Demons, reverend, have passed through the deceit of the cross by grace and action; you were a god. Moreover, we truly honor you, Gerasime.

Glory, even now, to the Mother of God:

Thy most pure hands, O Virgin Mother, have spread out to cover those who trust in Thee and call upon Thy Son: grant Thy mercy to all, O Christ.

Holy Cross:

Seeing Thy Son erected on the Tree, the Most Pure One, torn to pieces by the womb of the mother, pitifully cried out: alas for Me, how come Thou, My flightless Light?

Song 4

Irmos : I heard, O Lord, Thy mystery, I understood Thy works and glorified Thy Divinity. The temple is enlightened by the Spirit, father, your heart sharpens your talents, healing ailments with Divine grace.

Obeying the Divine Law, Father, from your youth you followed the Lord, kissing the disembodied in life with the body. Your journey, reverend, to the path of salvation has been corrected by the instruction of the Divine Spirit, who dwells in you, reverend.

Theotokos : Jesus, the Lover of Mankind, Whom You unspeakably bore, pray, O All-Immaculate One, to save all who sing to You.

Song 5

Irmos : Morningly, we cry out to You: Lord, save us, for You are our God, and You know no other. With a purified mind you received the rays of the Holy Spirit, you were the light of the monastics.

Your life, shining with the need of nature, shows you as an earthly angel with flesh. You are filled with the living waters of the Spirit, you have flowed forth rivers of miracles, Father Gerasima.

Theotokos : Like a cloud, on Ty, the Mother of God, the Word, embodied in the enlightenment of our souls.

Song 6

Irmos : Cleanse me, O Savior, for my iniquities are many, and bring me up from the depths of evil, I pray, for I have cried out to You, and hear me, O God of my salvation. Your weak flesh is strengthened with strength from the Virgin who has risen to us Pure, humble all the power, Father, hostile incorporeal ones, reverend.

Having crushed the jaws of mental lions with grace, you subdued your sensual aspirations, reverend; thus the lion obeys you, as he dutifully serves the shepherd. Angelic life, wisdom, Father, having humbly acquired in Christ, you were meek and now you have settled in the lands of the meek, we are filled with Divine joys.

Theotokos : Dwell in You, the Father, Pure, illumination and, being born in the flesh, enlighten the world, and deliver the darkness of polytheism. For this reason we praise Thee

Kontakion, tone 4:

Inflamed by the zeal of the Heavenly, you preferred the harshness of the Jordan desert above all the sweet things of the world; Because of this, the beast obeys you even to the point of death, father, having died obediently and compassionately at your tomb, I will glorify you to God, praying to the Unman, and remember us, Father Gerasim.

Song 7

Irmos : The youths of Jewry in the cave boldly crushed the flame and turned the fire into dew, crying: Blessed are you, Lord God, forever. Light has risen for you, Father, and this joy has been associated with it, in the roofs of Heaven you will always find yourself and sing songs: Blessed are you, Lord God, forever.

Having filled your heart with clouds of tears, O God-Bearer, you have vegetated virtuous fruits, in whose image you have accepted the heavenly sweetness forever with all the saints. Carrying singing in imitation incessantly, Angels, vigilant in mind, cried out to Gerasima: Blessed are you, Lord God, forever.

Theotokos : Fire is not like Thee, Mother of God, the Deities have fallen, the Virgin, for Thee is sometimes formed as a bush in the mountain, scorched, Most Pure, and not like the burning.

Song 8

Irmos : God-speaking youths in the cave, trampling the flame with fire, bless the works of the Lord, the Lord. You appeared enlightened to the Lord of the fasting radiances, the miracle worker Gerasima, and you were counted among the bodiless ones.

Having spent your life in goodness, you have made the evil seat of the Lord, the beauty of the God-Wise Gerasima, worse. You clothed yourself in the garment of incorruptibility with passions, O God-Wise Father Gerasima, and you deservedly received the Divine palace.

Theotokos : Like a fragrant wine, the Most Essential One, the All-Pure One, found Thee in the pleasures of life, I will breathe in Thee the fragrance of the world.

Song 9

Irmos : Every hearing was frightened by the indescribable descent of God, as the Most High descended even to the flesh by the will of a girl, from a girl’s womb he became Man. Likewise, we magnify the Most Pure Mother of God.

Following in the footsteps of all who walked kindly on earth, you had love, faith, hope, moderation, wisdom and endless prayer, inexpressible abstinence, Father Gerasim, enjoyed pure ascents.

Oh, miracle! How, as verbally, did the beast obey your commandment, Gerasima, serving with zeal, glorifying to God your life equal to the angels, signs, reverend, and countless marvels and wonders? Confirmation appeared to the monastics and the silent, God-bearer, punishment, you walked the narrowest path of abstinence, ever expanding the soul with Divine hopes. Moreover, you have found a large settlement in the chosen villages. You have flourished, Father, in the courts of our God, like a tall phoenix, like a cypress, you have been magnified by Divine offerings. Therefore, we all faithfully celebrate your memory, we pray in earnest; Save us from all temptations. Theotokos : Carrying Emmanuel in Thy hand, Pure, like a Child, Thou art delighted with God, and cried out: My sweetest child, how shall I give Thee a breast, who nourishes all things? How do I see Thee in shrouds, the sea enveloping in darkness?

Life of a Saint

The Monk Gerasim was born in Lycia, and from a young age he was known as a very pious young man. He was ordained a monk and went into the desert, later settling near the Jordan, where he founded his monastery.

For some time, Gerasim’s thoughts were shrouded in the heresy that Jesus has only the Divine nature. But the Monk Euthymius helped him in time to realize everything and turn to faith.

In his temple, the monk established strict rules for himself and his companions:

  • solitude five days a week;
  • plenty of time for handicrafts;
  • constant prayers;
  • refusal of boiled food and fire;
  • using dry bread, plant roots and water as food;
  • communion on weekends.

Each of the monks had very few material goods: old clothes and matting for sleeping. The door to their cell was never locked, so that every traveler could enter and rest.

The saint was the highest example of asceticism. And at the hour of Saint Euthymius’s death, he saw the soul of the deceased being carried up to Heaven by an Angel. After what he saw, he immediately buried the body of his mentor.

Gerasim himself passed away quietly into another world. Until his death, he was helped in his labors by a lion, who, after the death of the saint, died on his grave and was buried next to him. Therefore, the lion is depicted at the feet of the saint on all icons.
