IV. PECHERSK ASCETS. THE BEGINNING OF BOOK LITERATURE AND LEGISLATION
(continuation)
The holy monastery became more and more important in the eyes of the princes and people. The chronicle, for example, says that the Grand Duke Svyatopolk used to go to the Pechersky Monastery to pray at the tomb of St. Theodosius and take the blessing from the abbot. After the pogrom suffered in 1096 by the Polovtsians, the monastery soon recovered, continuing to grow rich and be decorated with expensive buildings. Its wealth grew as a result of generous contributions from people of the princely and boyar families. Shimon Varyag, who helped with his property during the construction of the Pechersk Church, was buried in the monastery. Subsequently, the son of this Shimon, George, who was a thousand in Rostov, sent, as they say, five hundred hryvnias of silver and fifty gold to shackle the shrine of St. with gold and silver. Feodosia. Noble people often expressed a desire to be buried in this holy place or were buried here due to the diligence of their relatives. Thus, in the Pechersk Church of the Assumption near Feodosius, the bodies of his beloved couple, boyar Yan Vyshatich, who had reached the age of ninety, and his wife Maria, were buried. The ashes of Gleb Vseslavich, Prince of Minsk, captured by Vladimir Monomakh, were also laid there. This Gleb and his wife, the daughter of the unfortunate Yaropolk Izyaslavich (killed by Neradets), contributed up to seven hundred hryvnias of silver and up to one hundred hryvnias of gold to the Pechersky Monastery. Gleb died in 1119. His wife lived as a widow for about forty years, died in her eighty-fifth year and was laid next to her husband. She bequeathed to the monastery five villages with servants and all her movable property, “even up to the warrior,” as the chronicle notes. In this case, she imitated not only her husband, but also her father, who gave the Pechersky Monastery several of its own volosts. Monomakh's sister Eupraxia, the former wife of Emperor Henry II, was also buried in the Assumption Church.
Thus, Kyiv, the center of Russian political life, in the natural course of history became the center of Russian Orthodoxy, the main place of Russian shrines. In Kyiv itself there were the Desyatinny and Sophia temples with the tombs of Vladimir and Yaroslav. In its northern suburbs, i.e. in Vyshgorod, there were shrines of the purely Russian saints Boris and Gleb, and in the southern environs the Pechersk monastery shone with the graves of also purely Russian saints, Anthony, Theodosius and many other ascetics buried in its famous caves. Little by little, from the distant ends of Rus', people got used to flocking to Kyiv to worship its shrines.

Of those Pechersk monks who became the subject of monastic legends, later included in the collection of lives, or the so-called Patericon of Pechersk, the following are especially remarkable: Damian the healer, Matvey the seer, Isaac the recluse, Elder Jeremiah, who remembered the baptism of the Russian land under Vladimir, Agapit - a free doctor, Mark the grave-digger, Alimpiy, the first Russian icon painter, Nikola Svyatosha, etc. They were contemporaries of Theodosius or labored shortly after him.
Many wonderful legends are told about the Pechersk ascetics, about their extraordinary fasting, patience, and especially about their tireless struggle with evil spirits, who are constantly being sophisticated in various ways to tempt the ascetics and interfere with their salvation. (For the most part, this is the personification of the passions or motives of human flesh, frivolity, pride and other weaknesses.) For example, Matvey the seer stands one day in the church, and he sees a demon in the form of a Poles carrying his luda, or cloak, into the field, flowers, called molds, and throws them first on this, then on another of the brethren singing matins. To whomever the flower sticks, he begins to feel very sleepy; After standing for a while, he goes to his cell and falls asleep; but to whom the flower does not stick, he cheerfully endures the service until the end. Another time, during the abbot of the Great Nikon, during the morning service he wanted to look at the abbot, and in his place he saw a demon standing in the form of a donkey; Matvey realized that the elderly Nikon had not yet risen from sleep. Or here is Isaac the recluse, who was formerly a merchant in the city of Toropets and gave away all his property to the poor, sitting in his cramped cave; until midnight he sang psalms and prayed, and now, having turned off the lamp, he sat down to rest a little. Suddenly his cave was illuminated with a blinding light; Two beautiful young men appeared and said: “Isaac! we are angels, and behold Christ comes to you; bow down to him." The recluse did not remember to make the sign of the cross and hurried to bow. Suddenly the demons exclaimed: “Now you are already ours, Isaac!” The whole cell was filled with demons, who began to play sniffles, tambourines and harps and forced the recluse to dance until his strength was exhausted; so, having scolded him, they left him barely alive. For several years he lay stricken with complete relaxation and deprived of his tongue. But subsequently, little by little, Isaac recovered, imposed foolishness on himself, subjected himself to all kinds of hardships and labors; until, finally, he was worthy to atone for his sin and defeat the demon. And here is another recluse, Nikita, who labored during the abbess of the Great Nikon. He shut himself up in the hope of receiving the gift of miracles from God, and was, of course, punished for his false humility. The evil one appeared to him in the form of an angel, as if sent by God himself. Nikita, with his help, began to talk about what was happening in remote areas, and soon became known as a prophet. He especially amazed those who came to him with his reading in the books of the Old Testament. But it seemed strange that he never wanted to talk or hear about the Gospel and the Apostle. From here the abbot and other elders soon guessed what was the matter. They came to the recluse and with their prayers drove the demon away from him. It turned out that Nikita was not only not distinguished for learning, but had never read Holy Scripture before; so the elders later had difficulty teaching him to read and write. Since then, leaving seclusion, he devoted himself to true humility and piety.
The first of the Russian princes who entered the Pechersk monastery as a monk was Nikolai Svyatosha, the son of the Chernigov prince David, the grandson of Svyatoslav Yaroslavich. Like his grandfather, he bore the pagan name of Svyatoslav, from which he received the nickname Svyatoshi. In 1106, he took monastic vows and then underwent various obediences before settling in a cell: he worked for the brethren in a cookery for three years and was a monastery gatekeeper for three years.
The Pechersk monastery had a great influence on Russian monasticism. Following its model, other cenobitic monasteries began to spread in Russia; Her ascetics became an object of imitation for the monks. Its importance in the history of the Russian Church is also evidenced by the fact that from the very first times of its existence it began to supply the Russian regions with hierarchs, ahead of all other monasteries. Thus, the monk Ephraim, the former steward of the Grand Duke and who sent Theodosius from Constantinople a copy of the Studite Charter, was subsequently installed as bishop of southern Pereyaslavl, and marked his bishopric here with the construction of many churches, stone city walls and other buildings. By the way, he erected some kind of bathhouse building in Pereyaslavl; which, according to the chronicle, had never happened before in Rus'. (According to Karamzin, more likely than others, it was a baptistery, or baptismal chamber, at the cathedral church.) Further, Stefan, Theodosius’s successor as abbot, was elevated to the episcopal department of Vladimir Volynsky; the above-mentioned recluse Nikita is later the bishop of Veliky Novgorod; Isaiah, a Pechersk monk under Theodosius, later became famous as the Bishop of Rostov, and others. Some of the Pechersk monks are not only known as preachers of Christianity in those regions of Russia that are still ossified in paganism; but they also sealed their apostolic exploits with the death of martyrs. These are: St. Leonty, Isaiah's predecessor at the Rostov See, is said to have died there from the pagans, and St. Kuksha, who baptized many people in the country of the wild Vyatichi, but finally accepted death from them along with his disciple Nikon.
The founders and devotees of the Pechersk Monastery testify to the strength of character, the strength and multifaceted abilities that nature has endowed the Russian people with. He is equally great in his representatives in the field of state and church life. That deep religious feeling, which in the pagan period led Russian people to bloody sacrifices to idols, now, purified by the light of the new religion, turned him to feats of self-torture and humility, but not stupid, timid humility, but conscious and active. Christian Rus' assimilates the ideals brought by the Greek Church and zealously tries to implement them in the person of its ascetics. Not inferior to Eastern models in asceticism, they do not sever all ties with the world; but they try to influence the improvement of his morality, the improvement of civil relations, of course, in accordance with their concepts, with the degree of their own development.
The icon was purchased from the Shchigry Orthodox brotherhood in 2010. The inscription on the icon reads: “The Council of the Saints of the Fathers of Pechersk.”
In the center of the icon are the Venerables Anthony and Theodosius, the founders of the Lavra. They are holding scrolls in their hands, on the scroll is St. Anthony it is written: “Lord, may the blessing of the holy Mount Athos be in this place,” on the scroll of St. Theodosius: “Lord, in the name of Your Most Holy Mother this house has been rewarded.” The holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir and other saints are also depicted, whose names are firmly entrenched not only in the history of the church, but of the Russian state.
Consecrated on December 31, 2010 at the Divine Liturgy, which was performed by His Eminence Longin, then Bishop of Saratov and Volsk, and His Eminence Irenaeus, then Bishop of Nezhin and Prilutsk.

Miracles every day
On Easter morning, the monk Dionysius, who was watching the monastery caves, entered one of the most remote ones. The deceased inhabitants of the monastery were buried here, which is why the place was called the Community.
- Fathers and brothers, Christ is risen! “Today is a Great Day,” Dionysius said loudly.
- Christ has truly risen! — a friendly chorus of thunderous voices suddenly rang out from the graves.
So who said that monks are all gloomy and gloomy people? So, even in their death they know how to enjoy life. And there are many such examples in the ancient book dedicated to the Kyiv monks - the Kiev-Pechersk Patericon. After all, living in solitude and wearing poor clothes does not mean dooming yourself to continuous sorrow...
The Monk Prokhor received the nickname Lebednik from the brothers of the monastery, because he ate nothing but quinoa cakes, which he prepared for himself. The brothers were surprised: quinoa is impossible to eat! She's bitter! But Father Prokhor collected it himself, crushed it into flour himself, and prepared his own cakes.
The brothers admired how he suffered for the sake of faith and fasting. But after a few years, famine began, there was not enough wheat flour for everyone, and Father Prokhor began to treat others with his flatbreads. It was then that it turned out that they were... sweet and very tasty! How so? What is the secret? Several cunning brothers quietly took some of the cakes, consider it stolen. We hoped to get to know their composition better, but it didn’t work out. The stolen cakes, as befits a swan, turned out to be as bitter as wormwood.
Miracle? Or maybe it's a coincidence again? One thing the brothers understood is that this whole story is not accidental. They repented to Father Prokhor, he forgave the unlucky thieves and treated them to the same flatbreads that they brought back to him. And again they seemed delicious as never before. Without the bitter aftertaste of a bad deed.
