Book of Hours for reading to the laity.

The Book of Hours is a liturgical book outlining the composition and order of public worship; contains the texts of unchangeable prayers for the daily liturgical circle (except for the priestly ones), that is, for all services of daily worship (Matins, Midnight Office, Hours with Interhours, Fine, Vespers and Compline). Intended for readers and singers. It also includes rites and prayers added to the six services of the daily circle: morning prayers, the succession of the elevation of the panagia, the blessing of the meal, the canon to the Mother of God and prayers for the future to sleep.

The Book of Hours, and especially its abbreviated version - the Book of Hours - in addition to its direct liturgical purpose, was used in Rus' to teach children to read and write. In the church these books were used every day.

The book takes its name from the clock service it contains.

This section contains texts of the sequences of the Book of Hours adapted for cell (home) reading.

Particular attention should be paid here to the sequences of Midnight and Compline, which were previously used by pious Christians instead of morning and evening prayers, as well as the Rite of Liturgy, which in modern practice Orthodox Christians use in cases where it is not possible to attend the Divine Liturgy on holidays and Sundays.

Everyone knew that Mrs. Mallard had a heart condition, so she was informed of her husband's death with the utmost caution.

Josephine, her sister, told her what happened. She spoke very vaguely, confusingly, in half-hints, as if revealing part of the truth. Her husband's friend, Richards, was also nearby. When the news of the train accident arrived, he was sitting in the newspaper office. Brantley Mallard's name was listed first among the dead. To finally make sure, Richards waited for the second telegram and immediately hurried to the Mallards' house with the tragic news, fearing that someone else, less caring and sensitive, would get ahead of him.

She accepted the sad news differently than many women - numbness from the inability to believe in the bereavement. She believed it immediately and burst into tears on her sister’s shoulder, uncontrollably, furiously. And when the tears stopped, she said that she wanted to be alone, locked herself in her room and, exhausted, fell into a large, soft chair by the open window. Misfortune had drained her body of blood and was already creeping up on her soul.

In the unfenced public garden outside the window, the trees were reborn to a new spring life. After the rain, there was a pleasant freshness in the air. Below, under the windows, a street vendor was inviting customers. From afar came the quiet sounds of some kind of song. Countless sparrows were chirping on the roof.

The clouds were gathering to the east of the window, and here and there pieces of blue sky were already visible.

She sat motionless, throwing her head back on the chair. Occasionally a lump would come to her throat, and she would sob, shaking her whole body, like a child sobbing in her sleep at night, having cried enough for the evening.

She was young and pretty. Her calm face usually expressed restraint, even strength, but now it seemed frozen. The indifferent gaze was directed into the distance, as if stuck in a piece of blue sky. The thought stopped, and the empty eyes stared at one point without blinking.

Some incomprehensible feeling was approaching her, and she was waiting for it with fear. What is this? She did not know. A subtle, elusive feeling that could not be expressed in words. But she clearly felt its approach: here it was sneaking towards her, making its way through the blue sky, through the sounds outside the window, through the smells and colors of spring that filled everything around.

Her breathing became deep and agitated. She began to guess what feeling was taking over her, and with an effort of will she tried to drown it out within herself, but these attempts were as weak as her thin white hands.

And when she stopped resisting, one single word came out of her half-opened lips. She repeated it quietly over and over again:

- Free! Free! Free!

Fear flashed in the empty eyes and immediately disappeared. Thought awoke in them, a living sparkle appeared. The blood pounded in my temples, spreading warmth throughout my body and warming every cell.

She did not dare admit to herself that she was filled with great joy, but common sense did not allow her to be a hypocrite. Of course, she will cry again when she sees kind, soft hands folded on her chest, and closed eyes that always looked at her with love, and a face - gray, petrified, dead. But behind the bitter moment she saw many, many years that were completely hers. And she opened her arms towards a new life.

Now she will live only for herself. No one will control her desires with the reckless persistence with which husbands and wives impose their own will on their spouses, believing that they have every right to do so. In a moment of insight, such violence seemed to her a real crime, even if it was committed with the best intentions.

And yet she loved her husband - at times, but more often - not. And what does it matter! What is love, an unsolved mystery, compared to the freedom that she longed for with all her being.

- Free! Soul and body! - she whispered incessantly.

Josephine knelt in front of the closed door and through the keyhole begged her sister to let her in:

- Louise, open up! Well, please! Unlock the door! Why are you torturing yourself! What are you doing there, Louise? For God's sake, open it!

- Go away, everyone! I'm not beating myself up at all!

And she really didn’t exhaust herself - through the open window she absorbed the elixir of life.

Her thoughts drifted into the future, giving way to imagination. Spring, summer - everything, everything now belongs to her. She turned to the Lord with a prayer to prolong her life. But just yesterday she was thinking with horror about how long life is.

Finally, she got up from her chair, opened the door to her annoying sister and left the room, like a victorious Nika. Her eyes sparkled feverishly, triumphantly shining in them. The sisters hugged each other and went down the stairs. Richards was waiting for them downstairs.

First hour

His attitude towards the vigil Already from the praises, that is, from the last part of Matins, the vigil weakens its solemnity, turning first into the quiet and slow singing of the great doxology, and then into a long series of litany petitions; Litia after Matins with the reading that fills it is in this regard even lower, and the 1st hour, completely devoid of singing, is even lower. Both are even taken out of the temple. Quiet prayer now caresses and refreshes the soul, tired by the prolonged delight of holiday songs.

Its relation to matins Falling at the very dawn (1st eastern hour = 7 o'clock at our equinox), the first hour is in the same relation to matins as the ninth is to vespers: both, coinciding in time, partly and in terms of content, with these most important daily services, they each have their own thought (idea) and do not repeat a single song or prayer from those services.

Composition and content of the 1st hour The theme of the 1st hour is the thoughts and feelings of a believer when morning comes; only some passages of his psalms, depicting the treachery of the enemies of a persecuted righteous man (like Ps. 5:11: “the truth is not in their mouths... the grave is opened in their throat...”), allow the timing of the 1st hour, as indicated by the “Teaching News” in the Service Book , to the memory of the trial of Christ by Pilate, which took place at this time of day. The first psalm of hour 5, “Inspire my words, O Lord,” is a hopeful morning prayer in the temple for the righteous and against the wicked, who should be deprived of all participation in the cult, and the singer turns from one to the other several times in equal stanzas (must be intended for antiphonal singing). The second psalm of the 1st hour 89 “Lord, you have been our refuge,” attributed (and by the Hebrew Bible) to Moses, depicts the brevity and difficulty of human life in comparison with the eternity of God, who replaces generations of people on earth, like plants every morning, for our life before God is shorter than one day; seeing the reason for this in God’s anger at our sins, the singer asks for a quick (“morning”) reward with God’s mercy for previous suffering according to the number of their days and years. In the last psalm of hour 100, “I will sing of mercy and judgment,” the pious king, in the form of a vow, outlines a program for his activities (at the beginning, the morning of his reign) both in private, home life, and in dealing with people, in relation to subordinates and closest servants, to the criminals who will be punished every morning.

Of the hymns and prayers of the 1st hour, the Lenten troparion “Hear my voice in the morning” generally prays for the acceptance of the morning prayer. The Theotokos “What shall we call Thee” represents the glorification of the Mother of God, regardless of the time of day, but from the Theotokos on the clock this is the most enthusiastic, perhaps because the 1st hour approximately corresponds to the time of the birth of the Savior (“you had God in the arms of the Son of all”); this Theotokos is not used anywhere else. The verse of the hour at the 1st hour, in contrast to the other hours, is double (as we will see below, the 1st hour in heterodox Churches stands out from the others in volume and originality); the first verse, “Direct my steps,” taken from the midnight-morning 118 ps. (vv. 133-135), asks God to direct our behavior according to God’s commandments (implied, on the coming day) and for spiritual enlightenment; second from Ps. 70:8 “Let my mouth be filled” asks to sing the glory of God throughout the coming day. The Lenten troparion for the Trisagion, which at the 1st hour, in contrast to the other hours, is set alone, is dedicated to the Mother of God: “The Glorious Mother of God”, serving also as the sedal of the 6th chapter, on Wednesday and Friday to the Cross “Soon to Precede” - the sedal of the 4th chapter. , on Saturday - to the martyrs “Like the firstfruits” - kontakion to the martyrs, chapter 8. The troparion was placed alone, perhaps in accordance with the numbering of the hour and due to fatigue from Matins. The exclamation at “Izhe for all time” is the same as at the 9th hour, “God be merciful.” Prayer of the 1st hour, attributed to St. Savva the Sanctified, addressed to Christ as a prayer for only 9 o’clock, asks Him, as the one who enlightens (in baptism) and sanctifies everyone who begins life, for spiritual enlightenment and correction through the prayers of His Mother (the latter is only in the prayer of this hour; cf. troparion for Trisagion). It is customary in practice to pronounce this prayer, unlike others during the hours, to the priest, and not to the reader (in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra - the reader), and after it, in accordance with the special attention that is paid to the Most Holy One at this hour. Theotokos, - they sing the kontakion to Her from the service of the Annunciation to the “Chosen Voivode”, as having the most general laudatory and prayerful content. They don’t sing in the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. As the final service in the group, the 1st hour has a vacation, therefore called “perfect,” colloquially “small,” at which only the face of the saints is remembered, because it is a monastic service.

History of the hour The 1st hour was established in the 4th century. in Palestinian monasteries for ascetic purposes (Introductory chapter, 147), and the final psalms of Matins 50, 62 and 89 were included in its composition (ibid.). Nothing is known about its further development in that era when the clock, perhaps, had a song character; judging by what later song sequences indicate for him ps. 5, one might think that from ancient times this psalm was part of the hour. Books of Hours from the 9th century. have the 1st hour in their current composition, differing only in the troparia for the Trisagion and the closing prayers. So, Slavic Books of Hours Moscow. RKP. indicate the 1st hour after the litia, noting that after the “Most Honest” “and they all say: Bless the Father in the name of the Lord. Priest: Through the prayers of St. our father. And they say the prayer: True Light of Christ. Lord have mercy 3, And there will be a complete release.” “The chosen voivode” is not indicated anywhere, but one charter appoints this kontakion on the clock on Hallelujah Saturday after the rest of Glory with the saints and now.

1st hour on Sunday The first hour of Sunday differs from weekday hours only in troparia and kontakion.
