What to read to children about Orthodoxy and which books about faith to choose

February 24, 2017

All parents want their children to develop: to go to a theater studio, a drawing club, English lessons, and also to go to the pool in time. This is all probably correct, but there is a better way! If you want your child to have a good command of the correct Russian language, so that he develops fantasy and imagination, so that he has his own opinion and can argue for it, so that he knows more about the world - read books to him. Only good. We bring to your attention a selection of Orthodox art books for children.

First Confession: The Tale of Alyosha

Author: Malyagin V.

Publisher: Father's House

The Tale of Alyosha is a fascinating story about a boy who finds himself from the familiar surroundings of a big city, from a non-church family, to a small village with a believing grandmother. Everything here is new and unusual for him - the village boy Mitka, with whom his relationship is difficult, the unchildishly wise daughter of the church watchman Liza, the beauty of wildlife, goats and geese, exciting fishing, icons in the corners of his grandmother’s hut, the huge bell tower of the village church, in which his great-grandfather, Alyosha, served as a deacon. The boy goes through serious trials, learns to understand and forgive, pray and repent. The story is so sincere, truthful and deep that it will bring tears to the reader’s eyes more than once. And Alyosha will return home from vacation as a completely different person. The book “The First Confession” is interesting both for independent reading by children and for reading by adults to children.

Chaffinch and his friends

Author: monk Lazar Afanasyev

Publisher: Russian Pilgrim

“A little bird, a wonderful creation of God - it takes its place in our earthly life and lives not only for itself. Her song is a praise to God. When I hear it, my soul rejoices. And how many friends Chaffinch has - so many for each of us. They will appear on further pages of this story and I will be glad if they become your friends, my little reader!”

Literature for teenagers

The modern world is full of vices and temptations that destroy the psyche of children and contribute to personality degradation. That is why the interests of a child, especially a teenager, must be directed in the right direction.

His parents and good, correct books can help him with this.

  • It is especially useful for children to read during adolescence God's Law and the New Testament, because it is at the age of 10-16 that fragile minds touch upon philosophical questions of existence. Christian parables and legends can broaden a child’s horizons. And familiarity with books telling about the history of the Church contributes to a more attentive attitude to church services.

    God's law

  • The work of monk Alexy of the “Spark of God” cycle contains biographies of saints, martyrs, miracle workers, and ascetics of Orthodoxy. Every life story is an example of purity of soul and spirit. The book contains ancient photographs, reproductions of icons and paintings.
  • Y. Voznesenskaya’s work “Lancelot’s Pilgrimage” describes the near future: the consequences of an environmental disaster and the unification of European countries under the rule of a president who calls himself the “messiah.” Readers travel to Jerusalem with an alien named Lance, who longs for healing from a newly minted “savior.” The events that took place make travelers think about love, faith and goodness.
  • A. Limonov’s book “The Praskovya Girl” describes a chance meeting between the modern Moscow boy Zhorka and the God-fearing provincial girl Praskovya. The guys find themselves in the dense taiga, many scary but exciting adventures await them. A common goal unites the teenagers, as a result of which the smug and proud Zhorka comes to faith and repentance.
  • “Spark of God. For the courageous and brave." Each chapter of the book tells about people who loved their Motherland and devotedly served the Fatherland. Among them are great commanders, noble princes, discoverers, generals, heroes. Strength of spirit and trust in God helped them fight the enemy. The work is supplemented with bright illustrations.

Wise donkey. Parables for children

Authors: Klyukina O.

Publisher: Nikea

Orthodox books for children are designed to reveal the content of Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition and the church worldview. Moreover, such books for children have a special character, taking into account the specifics of the addressee, and a special form that is accessible to children’s perception. In order for a child to turn to an Orthodox book, its content must be fascinating and appropriate for the child’s age. A small child needs to be explained to him what is good and what is bad, how to act in certain life situations. The main thing that an Orthodox book should convey and teach children is to awaken love for God and people, love for prayer and worship. The child must understand that the Lord loves him and He expects the same tender and strong reciprocal love from the child.

Childhood is the period when personality is formed; The fate of a person largely depends on it. And it is literature that is designed to familiarize children with various aspects of life, teach them to recognize good and evil, and make the right decisions. Orthodox children's books can be both entertaining and educational. In the modern world of computer technology, children receive most of their information from TV and the Internet. But very often it does not carry anything good or useful, and often even has an adverse effect on the child’s psyche and soul. Many parents try to limit the amount of useless or harmful data that their child may receive from the outside. Many people try to purchase high-quality literature that would allow the child to receive correct and useful information for the soul about the world around him and the purpose of man on earth.

We offer a wide range of Orthodox children's literature at the most affordable publishing prices. After all, it should contribute to the churching of children, that is, the process of their assimilation of church knowledge and acquisition of prayer skills. Nowadays, more and more often we meet children who have been churched from the first years of life.

Books for children published by Orthodox publishing houses are not only educational and educational, but their main content is faith in God. Secular children's books usually only entertain and distract children, but children need to be taught mercy, compassion, love for God and neighbors. Orthodox children's publications help the reader to learn and understand the essence of the Orthodox faith, so that the person who reads them can then say what the Orthodox Church is, how to live according to the commandments of God, why a person is born and what he lives for, and, accordingly, he himself applies the knowledge obtained from books in his practice life.

Children from 3 to 6 years old comprehend a wide variety of phenomena and objects of the earthly world. In terms of form, short and solid works are preferable for them; stories containing a simple idea. At the same time, the child prefers dialogues to monologues. Therefore, it is good if the book contains a constant appeal to the child, if there is a leisurely conversation with him. It is for this age category that adaptation of hagiographic and spiritually edifying texts is needed, since they are written in the language of their time, and many language forms and even life situations themselves are incomprehensible to children.

In the period from 6 to 10 years, a child especially actively learns about the world around him, his personality is formed, the formation of evaluative criteria, a worldview that determines a person’s behavior in the future. The books read at this age are much more complex, larger in volume and aimed at helping the child become aware of himself and understand the world around him.

Our children's Orthodox literature is very widely represented. There are both small and large books, for older and younger children, for reading for every day, and as gifts.

Now each diocese has its own publishing house, where religious literature, including children's literature, is published. It can be found in a wide variety both in church shops and in large bookstores in different cities. These include children's Bibles, lives of saints and many other books. Today, Orthodox books are published for very young children, preschoolers, primary schoolchildren and teenagers.

A distinctive feature of our store is the sale of all these wonderful books without extra charges, at publishers' prices.

The main thing that parents should remember is to bring their child to God as early as possible, while choosing all available means. Read with your children, and in the future they themselves will show interest in Orthodox literature and will be able to pass on knowledge and faith to their children.

It just so happened that exactly the year when Sasha was about to enter first grade, Margarita Semyonovna was appointed head of the admissions department for schoolchildren. She had a long and detailed conversation with each future student, tested his knowledge, and at the same time the knowledge of his parents, and then distributed the children into classes - A, B, C or D. Sasha and her mother entered the spacious office. Soft sunlight penetrated the thin tulle curtain and slid across the desks, walls and the woman sitting at the teacher’s desk.

Those who entered said hello. Margarita Semyonovna pointed them to the desk in front of her. They sat down obediently. “Well, hello,” she began good-naturedly. - How old are you, dear? “Seven,” Sasha answered timidly. “It will be eight in November,” mom added.

Margarita Semyonovna adjusted her glasses: “Eight is already serious.” Well, let's not waste time. Tell me, my friend, do you know the name of the great Russian poet Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin? – pronouncing the surname, she slightly raised her voice, as if trying to emphasize the importance of the voiced person.

Sasha nodded uncertainly. In fact, he knew Pushkin well, knew his fairy tales and even the poem “At Lukomorye there is a green oak tree” by heart. He just felt a little uneasy right now. “This is very good,” the woman said, and immediately took out a heavy volume from somewhere. – Let’s start with the poem Ruslan and Lyudmila. Read me the first page,” she handed Sasha the book. “Excuse me,” my mother timidly intervened, “is this what the program is now?” It seems that in my time we read this poem in the fifth grade. - Now is not your time. And it’s not even mine,” Margarita Semyonovna remarked sharply, and from her tone Sasha’s insides somehow went cold. He looked at the book and was silent, feeling the prickly gaze on him on the top of his head. - Well, why are we here, are we going to sit until the morning? – the teacher pressed.

Sasha swallowed the lump stuck in his throat and whispered: “I don’t know how.” - What? – asked Margarita Semyonovna. – I didn’t hear. “I can’t read,” the boy repeated, without taking his eyes off the book.

The mother sitting next to her had slightly pink cheeks. And not at all because she paid little attention to her own child. No, Sasha read very hard with his mother, his grandmother, and even his father when he returned from a flight. But the letters did not want to make friends with him. It was as if they were playing hide and seek, showing their true faces only for a moment, then immediately hiding, blending into the crowd of their faceless brothers. And it’s strange - Sasha showed no other signs of developmental delay. From the point of view of modern medicine, he was completely healthy. To be honest, having lost all hope, my mother really counted on school. She thought that her son would come to class, and there he would meet a miracle teacher with many years of experience, and everything would somehow work out by itself.

Margarita Semyonovna stood up and slowly walked around the room. It would probably be better if she said something. But she was silent, and this silence strangely shook the air.

Finally she sat down in her place: “Yes, in the modern world, alas, there are different ideals.” Today, television and all these push-button devices replace us with something that can bring true joy. The boy is not to blame. The family is the institution that is primarily responsible for shaping young minds. In your case, I can only say one thing - if a child has not learned to read by the age of eight, the problem should not be voiced in a half-whisper. You need to shout about it as much as you can. Unfortunately, in our city there is no school that deals with problem children. I think you should contact the regional center. “Wait,” Mom got scared. - But you have no reason...

Margarita Semyonovna did not let her finish. - Do you think I have no reason? Did you know that at one time I headed the regional commission for the selection of applicants for Moscow universities! Even the late governor turned to me for help when writing especially important documents. My word in the education of our city weighs much more than you can imagine. “Please give us a chance,” Mom almost cried. The expression on her face could make anyone's heart flutter. But not Margarita Semyonovna’s. - Why haven’t you taken advantage of your chances in eight years? Enrollment of students ends on August 10th. I don't think you can change anything in two months. - So, we still have time until the tenth of August? – Mom straightened her shoulders.

There was no trace of the former sad expression left on her face. Just calm and tense anticipation. - Well, if it makes you feel better, then yes. Just keep in mind that the district school for problem children ends accepting documents around the same time. You may miss your place there too. “Thank you,” my mother said, took Sasha’s hand and left the class.

The June afternoon was unusually gentle. I didn't want to hide in the shade because of the heat. On the contrary, the sun shone softly, carefully stroking the boy’s golden hair, caulking his small nose, and casting a pearlescent sheen on the dress of his tall and slender mother. They walked slowly. Neither of them wanted to talk.

On this day, Sasha and mom wandered for a long time through the cozy city streets, smelling of fresh mint, and cherry plums, and raspberries, and chicken coops, and many other things so familiar and ordinary.

And then somewhere a bell rang. Mom and Sasha stopped, involuntarily listening to this strange and at the same time ordinary sound. It was as if they realized for the first time that here in their little world there was a bell tower that was ringing for some reason at this evening hour.

Without saying a word, still under the influence of their heavy and silent thoughts, they headed along an ordinary quiet street, along ordinary one-story houses to where an unfamiliar call was heard.

The temple, and with it the bell tower, was opened just a few weeks ago. Perhaps right now the heavy, battered bell rang for the first time after many years. And maybe that’s why mom and Sasha were so surprised by his ringing. Although, it is very difficult to say for sure.

The small Church in honor of St. Nicholas looked as befits a two-hundred-year-old building that had not been under any state protection for many years. Some windows were boarded up due to the lack of glass; instead of steps at the front porch, a plank platform with bricks was constructed. The blackness of the structure's base was visible through the blue-gray walls.

Several old women approached the door with confident steps and, one after another, disappeared into the black unknown.

Sasha looked questioningly at his mother. Children always do this when they don't know something. Mom took him by the hand and, following the old women, dived under the arch of two hundred years of architecture.

Several years will pass, and the smell that they first felt in the Church will become as familiar and familiar as the smell of cozy city streets. But now they felt something subtle, fragrant, calming and even magical in the unusual surroundings. Someone's regular and very high-pitched voice was singing the tune of an unfamiliar song. Everything was strange and at the same time unpretentious, as if Someone had previously intended this smell, this song and in general this place to be here from the beginning to the end of time.

...Probably enough time had passed, because the old women began to disperse, but mother and Sasha were still standing in the Church, not daring to move. Someone called out to them quietly. Mom, as if waking up from a deep sleep, looked at the man standing next to her. He was an ordinary gray-haired priest, the kind sometimes depicted in textbooks on scientific atheism. But, unlike those characters, this one’s eyes were warm: “The service is already over,” he said calmly, “can I help you with anything?” “I don’t know,” my mother blurted out somehow naturally.

This happens when you so easily tell a complete stranger everything that is in your heart. It’s as if you’re pouring out all your weight on him, only because he’s not your own and you don’t feel sorry for him. Mom talked about her misfortune and, it seems, even sobbed at times. And Sasha just stood nearby. He knew that he had made his mother worry again today and he wanted with all his heart to fix it.

The priest listened carefully to the speaker, and when she fell silent, he asked: “Well, why did you decide that everything was so hopeless?” - How? - Mom didn’t understand. It suddenly seemed to her that the priest was not listening to her at all, and this made her feel uneasy. — If a person tries to solve a problem on his own, but nothing works out, this is not a sign of hopelessness. This just means that here, as indeed everywhere and always, without God we are powerless.

Mom looked at the priest incredulously. “For example,” he continued his thought, someone is sick. Sick for a long time and hard. The doctors treat him, they treat him, they try this way and that, but nothing works out for them. What does this mean? — About the fact that a person cannot be helped? – Mom asked innocently. — That there is a cause of the disease, how could it be otherwise, it’s just not visible from the place where the doctor stands. But the all-seeing Lord knows about this person’s illness even before it appeared, knows about its causes, what it is for, what it leads to. - Do you want to say that our problem also has its own reason, which is not visible at first glance? “I want to say that you can’t talk about hopelessness in your case, since you haven’t even tried to use the strongest and most effective means yet...

On this day, mom and Sasha did not leave the Church empty-handed. They carried with them a tiny prayer book, which contained the most important prayers - Our Father, Creed, Heavenly King, Hail Mary and several more.

Now every evening before going to bed, mom prayed in Sasha’s room, trusting in every corner of her loving heart in the Creator and His all-merciful mercy. When the tenth of August arrived, it was Sasha who read the prayers, not my mother. It’s even surprising that in just two months he managed to learn to read in a way that other children had not been able to do in several years. This is because when a person does not rely on his own strengths, but surrenders himself into the hands of the Lord, his life, and with it all his skills, goals, plans and dreams, no longer goes along a thorny mountain path, but along a wide bright road, illuminated by a wondrous light, invisible to our earthly eyes.

“It’s a shame when you can see it”: what Orthodox teenagers read

Share:

Resurrection. Squinting from the February sun, I leave the stuffy church after the service. I maneuver between gypsy children with mayonnaise jars for alms and babies whose parents are hastily dressing them. “Hello,” comes from somewhere on the right... I would like to answer “Hello!” out of habit, but I understand that for a 15-year-old boy, flashing his bare ankles in winter, a “thirty-year-old woman” is already just “Aunt Katya.” “Hello,” I say to the teenager. The priest's son, having barely accepted my greeting, again activates his thumb, which sets the news feed on his iPhone in motion. Two more maidens in fashionable parkas flutter out of the temple, chirping in the language of memes. Enthusiastically chatting and giggling about something, they head towards the “Popovich” who has his head buried in a gadget. "Happy!" - I think. They have spring, love, student years ahead, today I have borscht, parent chat and “News of the Week” with Dmitry Kiselev...

My “Orthodox youth” was different... All that remained of it were a few greasy Sofrino icons and a couple of brochures written by popular priests of that time for the believing “young people.”

In a brief retelling, all church literature addressed to teenagers of the early 2000s looked like this: “before the wedding, no, no,” “there are two paths in life - a large family or a monastery,” “let your wife be afraid,” “marriage is only for childbearing.” , “Halloween and Valentina are in the firebox, Peter and Fevronia rulezz.” Oh yes! From swearing and heavy rock, water changes its structure. And the songs of some popular Western artists are nothing more than prayers to Satan, played in reverse order. And, of course, we should not forget about the myth of telegony, widespread in church circles. This is when a horse “sinned” with a zebra, and then carried a striped foal from a thoroughbred horse. We went to church as best we could...

Recently I came across a funny phrase in RuNet: “When you are 30, the Last Judgment can no longer intimidate you.” But it seems to me that it won’t be possible to frighten these 15-year-olds with iPhones either... And why? This is a dubious weapon in the fight for young souls. By painting Bosch’s paintings with words in front of young users of social networks, we risk turning into a meme ourselves...

Of course, the Church needs to look for a new language to communicate with young people. If on the Internet, the freest and most open environment, changes occur quickly: priests master Instagram and YouTube, church virgins maintain accounts about faith, improving their photos from the temple with the help of fashionable presets, then in the field of the printed word, over which publishing stamps and blessings dominate , there is a huge empty gap in the segment of literature for young people. Simply put, there are still few good publications for teenagers that will not cause “facepalms” from the “youths” in church shops...

Against this background, the attempt of the Orthodox deacon and teacher Ilya Kokin to talk with young readers about the reasonable, the good, the eternal in their own language looks very bold. He knows, or pretends to know (like me!), how schoolchildren and students live today. Here is a quote from his book “Fear Builds Walls, Love Builds Bridges”:

“To somehow become famous on YouTube, you need to do something worthwhile, or better yet, screw up epically, but in order to leave your mark on Instagram, you just need to periodically eat something and take pictures of your legs. What is the reason for this hysteria around Instagram? Why do we post every minute of our lives for the world to see? We just feel that every second of our life, limited by birth and death, is irretrievably evaporating - into nowhere... And so we are trying, as it were, to preserve the moments of our lives, put them in separate jars and put them on shelves in the universal pantry. What if someone likes this and “likes” it?”

A significant part of Ilya Kokin’s book is devoted to fears, but not the fear of “fiery Gehenna” or “the imminent end of the world,” which was characteristic of the early 2000s, but to an explanation of the nature and consequences of simple human phobias that manifest themselves exaggeratedly in the lives of teenagers. The only effective weapon against fear of any origin, according to the author, is love in all its manifestations. He dedicated the second part of his work to her. The titles of the chapters of both sections sharply contrast with what I had to read as a “teenager”: “It’s a shame when it’s visible”, “Game over”, “Christ is the liberator of women”, “About this”, “Why Christians” don’t do they like “sex?”

The illustrations for the publication were drawings of a sixteen-year-old girl, which signals to teenagers: “Hey, guys, everyone here belongs!” And the “acid” cover design should finally assure the slender “youngsters” that there will be no boring sermons. And, I must say, their expectations will be justified.

If representatives of the “Pepsi generation” dressed in the markets and spent their holidays in the village with their grandmother, leafing through brochures about telegony, then for those born in the late 90s and later, the world expanded its borders and presented many new opportunities. For example, have access to good Christian Western literature.

Another publication that I noticed, which I can recommend to young readers without fear of getting into trouble, is “Hear Me,” an adapted prayer book for teenagers in Russian, compiled by an Orthodox writer from America, Annalisa Boyd.

The small stylish book on my desk is not just a collection of religious texts, it is a kind of “navigator” for young men and women taking their first steps in faith. Traditional prayers, such as the “Our Father,” are side by side with very unusual ones, such as the “Shield of St. Patrick.”

In addition to words with which you can turn to God, the mother of nine children from the states has collected in her book a lot of “useful information” for believing teenagers, including short answers to pressing questions for schoolchildren: how to survive the betrayal of friends and first love? how to help yourself with depression? What to do if you encounter ridicule in a team? what to do if you are tempted to use alcohol and drugs?

Annalize certainly knows what's on young minds. Her tone is very confidential and delicate...

This is roughly what the “first swallows” look like... I hope that in the future there will be more “suitable” Orthodox literature for young people, good and different!
