Troparion, tone 1

In the Jordan I am baptized to You, Lord, Trinitarian adoration appeared: for the voice of the Parents testified to You, naming Your beloved Son, and the Spirit in the form of a dove, the affirmation known to Your words. Appear, O Christ God, and enlighten the world, glory to Thee.

When You, Lord, were baptized in the Jordan, the worship of the Most Holy Trinity appeared, for the voice of the Father testified about You, calling You the beloved Son, and the Spirit, appearing in the form of a dove, confirmed the truth of this word. Christ God, who appeared and enlightened the world, glory to You!

Kontakion, tone 4

Thou hast appeared this day to the universe, and Thy light, O Lord, has appeared upon us, in the minds of those who sing Thee: thou hast come and appeared, the unapproachable Light.

You have now appeared to the whole world; and Your light, Lord, is imprinted on us, consciously chanting You: “You have come and appeared, Unapproachable Light!”

Greatness

We magnify You, Life-Giving Christ, for our sake now baptized in the flesh by John in the waters of the Jordan.

We glorify You, Christ, Giver of life, because You have now been baptized in the flesh by John in the waters of the Jordan for us.

Zadostoynik, voice 2

Magnify, my soul, the most honorable of the hosts on high, the Most Pure Virgin Mary.

My soul, glorify the Mother of God, most honorable of the Heavenly Powers, the Most Pure Virgin.

Every tongue is perplexed to praise according to its inheritance, but the mind and the worldly praise of Thee, Mother of God, are astounded; Otherwise, being a good being, accept faith, for our love is divine: You are the intercessor of Christians, we magnify You.

No human tongue is able to adequately praise You, and even the heavenly mind is perplexed as to how to sing of You, Mother of God. But You, as the Good One, accept faith, because You know our fiery love: You are the Representative of Christians, We magnify You.

Troparion for the Blessing of Waters, tone 8

The voice of the Lord cries out on the waters, saying: come, receive, all of you, the Spirit of wisdom, the Spirit of understanding, the Spirit of the fear of God, who has appeared Christ.

The voice of the Lord cries out on the waters, saying: “Come, all of you, and receive Christ who has appeared, the Spirit of wisdom, the Spirit of understanding, the Spirit of the fear of God.”

Today the waters are sanctified by nature, and the Jordan is divided, and its streams return, the Lord is baptized in vain.

Now the watery nature is sanctified, and the Jordan divides and stops its flow, seeing the baptized Master.

As a man came to the river, O Christ the King, and sought to receive servile baptism, O Good One, from the hand of the Forerunner, a sin for our sake, Lover of mankind.

As a man came to the Jordan River, Christ the King, and you demand, O Good One, slave baptism from the hand of the Forerunner for the cleansing of our sins, O Lover of Mankind.

Glory, and now: To the voice of him crying in the wilderness: prepare the way of the Lord, - you have come, O Lord, taking on the form of a slave, asking for baptism, not knowing sin; I saw the water and was afraid. The Forerunner was trembling and cried out, saying: how will the lamp of Light illuminate, how will the servant lay his hand on the Master? Sanctify the waters for me, O Savior, take away the sin of the world.

Glory even now: To the voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord,” You came, Lord, taking on the form of a servant, and, O sinless one, you ask for his baptism; The waters saw You and were afraid. The Forerunner trembled and loudly exclaimed: “How can a lamp illuminate the Light? How can a slave lay his hand on the Master? You Yourself, the Savior, who took upon yourself the sins of the world, sanctify me and the waters!”

PRAYER FOR THE BAPTISM (EPHIPANY) OF THE LORD

Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born from the Father before all ages, Light from Light, enlightening everything, in the last year of the Most Holy Virgin Mary incorruptible incarnate and coming into this world for our salvation! You did not suffer to see the human race tormented by the devil, and for this sake, on the bright day of Your Epiphany, you came to the Jordan to a sinner and a publican to be baptized by John, sinless, that you might fulfill all righteousness and take away the sins of the whole world in the waters of the Jordan, like a Lamb God, what I have to bear on Myself and atone for with Baptism of the Cross, Thy Most Pure Blood. For this reason, I immersed You in the waters, the heavens enclosed by Adam were opened to You, and the Holy Spirit descended on You in the form of a dove, bringing enlightenment and deification to our nature, and Your Divine Father proclaimed His favor to You with a heavenly voice, You have already done His will and man has accepted His sins. and You have already prepared for Yourself the slaughter, just as You Himself declared: “For this sake the Father loves Me, because I lay down My soul, that I may receive it again,” and so on this all-bright day, You, Lord, laid the foundation for our redemption from the Fall ancestral

For this reason, all the powers of heaven rejoice and all creation rejoices, longing for their liberation from the work of corruption, saying: Enlightenment has come, grace has appeared, deliverance has come, the world has been enlightened and people are filled with joy. Let heaven and earth rejoice now, and let the whole world play; let the rivers splash; May springs and lakes, abysses and seas rejoice, for their nature has been sanctified today by Divine Baptism. Let the assembly of men rejoice today, for their nature has now returned to the first nobility, and let them all sing with joy: It is time for the Epiphany. Come mentally to the Jordan, we will see a great vision in it: Christ is coming to Baptism. Christ comes to Jordan. Christ buries our sins in water. Christ comes to look for the stolen and erring sheep and, having found it, brings him into paradise.

As we celebrate the remembrance of this Divine Sacrament, we earnestly pray to Thee, O Lord who loves mankind: grant us, who thirst at Thy voice, to come to Thee, the Source of ever-living water, so that we may draw the water of Thy grace and the remission of our sins and renounce wickedness and worldly lusts; Let us live chastely and virginally, and righteously and piously in this present age, awaiting the blessed hope and the manifestation of Thy glory, the Great God and our Savior, who may save us not from our works, but by Thy mercy and by the renewal of Thy Holy Spirit by the washing of regeneration, which is abundantly Thou hast poured it out, so that, having been justified by His grace, we will be heirs of eternal life in Thy Kingdom, where, with all the saints, grant us to glorify Thy all-holy Name with Thy Beginning Father and with Thy Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Chosen by the Voevodo, the King of heaven and earth, You, our Enlightener, were seen in the Jordan by a slave who was baptized, the heavens were horrified, and the whole earth trembled, the angels were surprised and all creation rejoiced. We, who are unworthy, cry out in gratitude to You: You appeared to sinners and publicans, and washed away the sins of men with waters. Glory to Thee, Son of God, Who was baptized in the Jordan and enlightened the whole world, glory to Thee.

Today the angelic forces are coming, the Lord Christ is seen, to the Jordanian streams of the coming to cleanse Adam's sin, and looking at the great mystery of God, with fear glorify His great condescension, as God became like man and does not at all know sin comes, as the Lamb of God takes away the sins of the whole world. For this reason, glorifying the Divine appearance of Christ, sing to Him as in Bethlehem the doxology: Glory to Thee, Son of God, who came from the Father from heaven to this world. Glory to Thee, Most High God, who even descended to the level of a slave. Glory to Thee, Savior of the world, as a man came to John to be baptized. Glory to You, the Enlightener of creation, like the new Adam of fallen Adam, who bore the sins of Himself. Glory to Thee, Beginningless Light, the great dawn of enlightenment for the whole world to dawn on the Jordan. Glory to Thee, Sun of Truth, the luminous morning of grace granted to man in Thy Epiphany. Glory to You, the world has been washed away from ancient charms by the One who has come. Glory to Thee, who showed us the great piety of the sacrament. Glory to You, who has created great miracles for us with many waters. Glory to You, who enlightened the heavens and the whole earth with the light of reason. Glory to You, who drowned the mental Pharaoh in the streams of the Jordan. Glory to You, who brought new people to eternal life in the waters of baptism. Glory to Thee, Son of God, Who was baptized in the Jordan and enlightened the whole world, glory to Thee.

Seeing in spirit your Divine Forerunner, O Christ, coming into the world, coming from the desert to the Jordan, the people cried brightly: Come near and our Redemption has appeared, repent and be cleansed with water, and strive to meet Him, so that with pure thoughts enlightened, pure souls and undefiled lips with joy sing to Him: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

Revealing the heavenly mind within yourself, the lamp of Light, the great Forerunner, cry out to people: Cleanse yourself, for Christ is coming to deliver the world from aphids, to resolve the condemnation of the Primordial Adam. Let the desert of Jordan rejoice and prosper like a creen, and let the whole earth now, as prophesied, rejoice. Prepare the way of the Lord and make right the paths of our God, all of you cry out to Him with joy: Glory to Thee, ineffable Light, presented from the lamp to the world. Glory to Thee, Incomprehensible Word, foretold by Thy voice by the Forerunner. Glory to Thee, purifying Fire, whose action consumes all impurity. Glory to Thee, O Source of Grace, by Whom all human nature is sanctified. Glory to Thee, Creator of heaven and earth, who desired to be baptized by a slave. Glory to You, Only Begotten Son, you were willing to appear on the Jordan. Glory to Thee, King of Truth, the Worthless Forerunner let loose the strap of his boot from fear. Glory to Thee, Master of creation, in Whom the whole human race rejoiced in Thy Baptism. Glory to Thee, Eternal God, for Thy Appearance enlightens and instructs infants. Glory to You, Light of the world, for Your coming enlightens and makes the blind wise. Glory to You, for You are the Source of life. Glory to You, for in Your light we will see light. Glory to Thee, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan and the whole world was enlightened, glory to Thee.

The Forerunner, realizing the power of Your Divinity, Christ, when she came with fear to Thee to the Jordan, rejoices in her soul and trembles, showing Thee with her hand, and says to the people: This is the one who delivers the world from corruption. This - free us from sorrow. This one, instead of slaves, will make us sons of God. This one, instead of darkness, enlightens people with the water of Divine Baptism. Behold, the Lamb of God, Who taketh away the sins of the world, Who taketh away, we cry: Alleluia.

Having the wealth of mercy, you came to the Jordan River as a sinner and tax collector, O Jesus, for you did not endure to see the human race tormented by the devil, but you came and again said to the fallen Adam: “Where are you? Don't hide from Me. I want to see you, even though you are naked and poor, and thus become like you, so that you are not ashamed.” For this reason, we preach Your great condescension, crying out to You like this: Glory to You, Good Shepherd, You have sought after the lost sheep. Glory to You, Only Begotten Son, who came to bear this. Glory to Thee, Immeasurable Mercy, to the fallen people. Glory to Thee, Lyuba Ineffable, people who have brought despair and grief. Glory to Thee, strengthen the weak hands of the poor. Glory to Thee, you heal the weak knees of the poor. Glory to Thee, thirsty desert like joyful Lebanon. Glory to Thee, O desert of the Jordan, as Carmel grew forth. Glory to Thee, O Merciful One, as smoking flax does not go out. Glory to You, Long-suffering, for you do not destroy broken reeds. Glory to You, you who came to seek and save the lost. Glory to Thee, you wished to call upon the rejected Adam. Glory to you, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan and enlightened the whole world, glory to you.

The Forerunner, Christ the King, was filled with a storm of doubtful thoughts when You, as a man came to the river and You wanted to receive slave baptism from him, saying: Stretch out your hand and touch My top and shake off all the horror, doing what was commanded. Then the Forerunner was trembling and cried out, saying: Why did you come to the servant, without filth, Lord? What do you command us, who are above me? The heights of the heavens are not the same number as any of the stars, nor have I measured the earth below. How can I baptize the creature who carries a handful? How will the lamp of Light illuminate? What hand will a slave lay on the Master? I demand to be baptized by You, so that I may sing to You: Alleluia.

Hearing the Lover of Mankind, the Lord of the humble Forerunners, the height of the verb and seeing his fear, he spoke to him: Good, O John, for you are in reverence before Me, but leave now and put aside your fear, you must serve Me, for it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness, that in Me people's sins will be cleansed. We heed this philanthropic word of Yours, and cry out to You with love: Glory to You, Christ, the true Light, for mercy and truth have been revealed to You. Glory to You, the King of Truth, for the truth and the world have embraced you. Glory to Thee, Sweetest Jesus, for Thy truth rose up from the earth in Bethlehem. Glory to Thee, Most Merciful Savior, for Thy righteousness in the Jordan came from heaven. Glory to Thee, our purification, as with the waters of baptism you make us whiter than snow. Glory to Thee, our Enlightenment, for through the streams of grace you create a pure heart within us. Glory to Thee, who bowed the condescension of Heaven, and bowed Thy head under the hand of the Forerunner. Glory to Thee, Covering Thy most exalted waters, plunging into the waters of the Jordan with favor. Glory to Thee, Lord of hosts, Whom everyone fears and trembles, the great fear of the Forerunner is to postpone the command. Glory to Thee, generous Father, whose mercy is immeasurable and unexplored; with Your mercy you are willing to cover the sins of the world. Glory to Thee, born of the Virgin, our Savior, visit us with Thy ineffable condescension. Glory to You, appear to the whole world, Christ our God, sanctify us with Your Divine appearance. Glory to Thee, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan and the whole world was enlightened, glory to Thee.

God-flowing stream of goodness, Lord, you ascended into the streams of the Jordan, so that with the waters you washed away human sin: It was horror to see the Creator of heaven and earth in the mouth naked and receiving baptism from a slave. The angelic powers marveled, but the Jordan River returned its streams, unable to endure the fire consuming its waters, as it is not usual for it to wash away the Pure and wipe away the Sinless. For this reason, let the Jordan River rejoice, and let the springs and lakes, and all the abysses and seas rejoice, for the watery nature is sanctified today, freed from the prince of darkness lurking there, and let all creation sing with us in joy: Alleluia.

Having seen Thee, the Divine John, the Master of creation, immersed in the waters, and submerged the sins of the whole world, and, having been naked, and clothed Adam’s nakedness again in the garment of glory, trembled in soul and cried out to Thee, the Lamb of God, who cleanses the sins of the world: “I dare not touch Thy top, Master.” “Sanctify and enlighten me, for You are the Life and Light and Peace of the world.” Moreover, according to Thy word, with fear, lay Thy right hand on Thy Divine head, and having baptized Thee, O sinless being, cry out to Thy face with joy: Glory to Thee, Lamb of God, who have come to take upon Thee the sins of the whole world. Glory to Thee, O Merciful Savior, you will drown the sins of all people in the waters of the Jordan. Glory to Thee, having washed us from the filth of sin. Glory to You, you who solved Adam’s crime. Glory to Thee, by Thy Manifestation of God on earth all men rejoice. Glory to You, who enlightened the whole world with Your Baptism in the Jordan. Glory to Thee, for the sake of us, to the image of a slave, impoverished. Glory to You, Who has enriched us through Your poverty. Glory to Thee, who by Thy humility have completely overthrown the enemy's dominion. Glory to Thee, Who began to build the Kingdom of God in Thy baptism on earth. Glory to You, who showed the path of Salvation on the Jordan to fallen people. Glory to Thee, the Light of the knowledge of God who has risen there to Thy faithful. Glory to Thee, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan and the whole world was enlightened, glory to Thee.

The wondrous preacher and Forerunner John spoke many things to the people who came, in order to prepare the way for You, O Lord, keep silent, I came to You to the Jordan, before You Yourself proclaimed to him: “I do not say to you: what words have I spoken to the wicked and taught to sinners, only to baptize I'm silent." It is not fitting for a human voice to shout when the Word of God has come and such a mystery is taking place, when the Angels of God stand with fear and all creation trembles. For this reason, we, in deep silence and with much reverence, cry out in our hearts: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

A great enlightenment and a terrible mystery appeared on the Jordan for the whole world, when, Lord Christ, having been baptized by John, You arose from the water, “bringing up the world with You,” and behold, the heavens were opened to You, even as Adam of old closed for himself and for those who are from him, yes Once revived by You, people will ascend to the heavenly abodes, where with joy they will sing to You: Glory to You, King of the world, who destroyed the mediastinum of the enemy. Glory to Thee, the Giver of mercy, who closed paradise through disobedience, and opened it again. Glory to Thee, heaven closed by sin, who once again showed the opening on the Jordan. Glory to Thee, the angels ascending and descending from here to appear to the one who promised. Glory to Thee, Who by Thy descent has bowed the heavens to the earth. Glory to You, who raised the earth to heaven through Your baptism. Glory to Thee, who revealed the inexpressible mysteries of God to the whole world by the revelation of heaven. Glory to Thee, by the appearance of the heavenly world, God’s most holy blessing has been given to all the faithful. Glory to Thee, who closed the heavens with Elijah, do not close the doors of Thy mercy to us. Glory to You, who opened the heavens on the Jordan, open to us the entrances of Your Divine Palace. Glory to Thee, who revealed to us the abyss of humanity at Thy Baptism, raise from the abyss of the earth all those who have reached despair to the enemy. Glory to Thee, Who hast created the rise to the third heaven of Thy chosen ones, lift us up to the heavenly abodes, too, who have fallen to the depths of sin. Glory to Thee, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan and the whole world was enlightened, glory to Thee.

Although the Lord, the Lover of Mankind, saves the world that is perishing in sins, He revealed His great mystery of the Trinity Epiphany, and just as at the beginning of worldly existence the Spirit of God hovered on top of the water, like the Giver of life, so also at Your baptism, Lord, when on the River Jordan you wanted to renew and enlighten the perishing. the human race and all creation groaning with us, the same Holy Spirit again descended from heaven in the form of a dove and rested upon You, Lord, as upon the new Adam, who will henceforth abide in the new people who have been reborn by the washing of water, so that they have been endowed with power from above in renewal of the spirit they will begin to walk, singing to God: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

You showed a new creation, Master of creation, in Your saving baptism from John, just as at Noah you drowned the sins of the first world, so in the waters of the Jordan you again drowned the sins of the whole world, for you created new things on earth with fire and Spirit and water, bringing about a strange rebirth and wonderful update. With the Spirit you recreate souls, with water you sanctify the body, edifying man, and thus mysteriously from water you create a multi-child Church with the Spirit, so that we always cry out to You like this: Glory to You, the Creator of creation, who bowed the heavens and descended onto the Jordan. Glory to Thee, Savior of the world, who opened the heavens and showed us the Divine Spirit. Glory to Thee, O All-Blessed One, for Thy Good Spirit will guide us to rightness on earth. Glory to You, All-Bountiful One, for Your Spirit will also cleanse us from all filth. Glory to You, through water and Spirit, who has renewed our nature, worn out by sin. Glory to Thee, who through the fire of the Divine in the streams of the Jordan bestowed much-lighted enlightenment. Glory to Thee, Christ, all the Divine powers, even to life and piety, who were imparted by Thy Holy Spirit at baptism to the faithful. Glory to Thee, Jesus, by the Descent of Thy Holy Spirit, we are partakers of the Divine nature of the Creator. Glory to You, who has rested on You with the Spirit of Wisdom and Reason and revealed pure knowledge of God to people. Glory to Thee, by the descent upon Thee of the Spirit of God, the spirit of counsel and strength, knowledge and piety, and the spirit of the fear of God, pouring out unto us. Glory to Thee, who scorched the heads of the serpent with the Jordan stream. Glory to Thee, by the manifestation of the Spirit of God in the form of a dove, who called us to dove meekness and virgin purity. Glory to Thee, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan, and the whole world has been enlightened, glory to Thee.

It was strange and wonderful to see the appearance of the Holy Trinity on the Jordan: first the Beloved Son appeared in the flesh from a baptized servant, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove, and then the Divine Father cried out from heaven, testifying: “This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” . Oh, great and glorious mystery: “The Lord and the Most High will roar from heaven,” may the prophecy of David the forefather be fulfilled: “The voice of the Lord is upon the waters, the God of Glory will roar, the Lord upon many waters.” The Voice of the Lord is in strength, The Voice of the Lord is in splendor.” For this reason, with unworthy lips we cry out to You from the depths of our souls: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

You are all in the highest, Jesus, I am a neighbor with the Father in heaven, but you also in no way depart from the lower ones, born in the flesh of the Pure Virgin in Bethlehem, now appearing on the Jordan to the whole world, and enlighten those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death with the light of Your Epiphany. For this reason, enlightened by the light of the Trinity Revelation, we cry out to You, who appeared to God, and was seen on earth and enlightened the world: Glory to You, Son of God, worshiped in the Highest with the Father and the Spirit. Glory to Thee, Son of the Father, Glorified by the Forerunner from below. Glory to Thee, gray-haired at the right hand of the Father, preached by a Fatherly voice from heaven. Glory to Thee, who became incarnate for our sake, called the beloved Son of God from Him to the whole world. Glory to Thee, revealed in the streams of the Jordan, the Light of the Trinity never set in Thy Baptism. Glory to Thee, baptized into the hand of a servant, making us sons of God, who are in the washing of rebirth, sons of God. Glory to Thee, Source of life and immortality, who brought us by birth by water and Spirit to the first nobility of paradise. Glory to Thee, Creator of heaven and earth, by fiery baptism the new heaven and earth of Thy righteousness are to be built. Glory to Thee, East of the East, in the darkness and shadows sleeping, enlightened by Thy Baptism. Glory to You, Light from Light, the invisible Light of Your Spirit shining in our souls. Glory to You, the Beginningless King, with the pure streams of Your Baptism, ancestral sin is completely washed away. Glory to Thee, Lord of creation, who richly gives thirsty people the water of eternal life to drink. Glory to Thee, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan and the whole world was enlightened, glory to Thee.

The whole angelic nature was amazed at Thy great Epiphany sacrament: Thou didst renew Adam, who had decayed through sin, with the streams of the Jordan, and Thou shattered the heads of the invisible serpents nesting there in Thy Baptism, and so Thou didst open the “depths of the abyss of Satan”, and deliver us from it. “deep waters,” and may you begin to build Your Kingdom, which is not of this world, about which the prophet David prophesied, saying: “Your Kingdom is the kingdom of all ages and Your Dominion is in every generation and generation,” which we glorify with howls from heaven cry out to you: Alleluia.

The Divine Vitia and the Angel of God, prophesied by Malachi, the Great Forerunner alone was granted by man, Lord, in Your Baptism of the Spirit to see the coming and hear the voice of the Father from heaven, testifying to Your Sonship of God, may he be the first preacher of the Trinitarian Epiphany to the whole world. That morning she testified to people, saying: “I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and remained on Him... And I saw and testified that this is the Son of God.” We listen to this revealed testimony and glorify Your Epiphany, O Christ, singing to You like this: Glory to You, Eternal God, testified from heaven by the appearance of the Holy Spirit. Glory to Thee, Immaculate Lamb, preached to the earth by the voice of the Forerunner. Glory to You, the Most High Fortress, who opened the closed heavenly gates to us by opening the heavenly gates above the Jordan. Glory to Thee, Eternal Mercy, Who through Thy Baptism brought forth a new world from the waters of the Jordan to man. Glory to You, the King of the world, who proclaimed peace and salvation on earth. Glory to You, Sun of Truth, the light of Your truth that has risen in our souls. Glory to You, Who revealed the Holy Spirit in Your Epiphany, so that with a pure spirit we may descend into Your heavenly palace. Glory to You, the Heavenly Father who showed us in Your Baptism, so that His sons who believe in You will have all the rights. Glory to Thee, in Dus and fire, our nature, darkened by sin, is gloriously enlightening. Glory to Thee, who most brightly cleanses our weakness, corrupted by passions, through water and the Spirit. Glory to You, God revealed in flesh, who renewed the whole world in the streams of the Jordan. Glory to You, who took upon yourself the sins of the world, who drowned the ancestral sin in the waters of Baptism. Although you might save our fallen and impoverished nature, O Christ the Savior, you came to the Jordan River as a sinner and publican and received baptism from John, when all people were baptized, so that you may take upon yourself all the sins of men, immersed there in the waters, as the Lamb of God and May you now be ready, by your will, to slaughter your mother-in-law, to atone for the sins of the whole world with Your precious blood. For this reason, you plunged into the Jordanian streams, and having buried yourself there, you prepared yourself for the baptism of death, about which you declared for the suffering that was coming: “The imam will be baptized with baptism and how I languish, until they are exhausted.” For this reason, we sing in gratitude to You: Alleluia.

To the Eternal King Christ Jesus! You came to the Jordan as a manifestation to the whole world, and may you resolve the condemnation of the primordial Adam, as the All-Merciful Judge, who alone tests the hearts of all, and may you give new life to man. For this reason, you took the cleaning shovel with your hand, you cleansed the world threshing floor with all wisdom, separating, like a Shepherd, the sheep from the goats. Grant us also, baptized in the name of the Most Holy Trinity, to seek the gums of those saved in this life in every possible way, so that our declaration to You may be pleasing: Glory to You, Bishop, who has traversed the heavens, in Your Baptism you have made the whole earth numb. Glory to You, Great Shepherd of the sheep, who came to Your flock at the Jordan. Glory to You, who founded the earth on the waters, renewing all our land on the waters of the Jordan with the grace of the Spirit. Glory to You, who was buried by the streams of the Jordan, so that we too may be buried by You in baptism into death and resurrection. Glory to You, the waters of the Jordan, as if clothed with a robe, so that we too may be clothed in the bright robe of truth and purity by You. Glory to You, who destroyed the mediastinum of enmity with Your Flesh, and made us, who exist far away in the sea, close to You. For this reason, with piety, let us diligently draw upon the most pure spring, so that we may draw with joy the water of life, for the grace of the Spirit is invisibly given to all who faithfully draw it, and the secret gift and the Spirit of knowledge, O Savior, let us all sing gratefully to You: Alleluia.

Singing, O Christ, Your saving Epiphany, we all glorify Your Divine Baptism in the Jordanian waters from John, we worship Your ineffable condescension towards fallen man and believe with the Forerunner that You are truly the Lamb of God, Take away from the waters of the Jordan the sins of the whole world, so that You may wash away and redeem them with Your Most Pure Blood. For this reason, we pray to Thee: bear our countless sins and do not deprive us on the great day of the Lights of Thy gracious rebirth, and with a pure heart we cry out to Thee in gratitude: Glory to Thee, Son of God, great light for the enlightenment of the whole world in the waters of the Jordan. Glory to Thee, Eternal God, who showed great grace and love for mankind in Thy Baptism to all mankind. Glory to Thee, Savior of the lost, who have come to seek the Jordanian streams as they have lost their way. Glory to Thee, the Conqueror of life, grant a new pure life not according to the flesh, but for the renewal of the spirit to the one who has favored. Glory to Thee, Lord of Life and Death, who has dulled the sting of death and who has risen up with the appearance of imperishable life. Glory to Thee, Creator of heaven and earth, the heavens above and the earth on the banks of the Jordan, who rejoiced in Thy Baptism. Glory to You, the King of those who reign, for the kingdom of this world from now on begins to be transformed into Your Kingdom. Glory to Thee, Lord of lords, for today the heavens are opened to all who want to be saved and our whole nature begins to become white. Glory to You, our Savior, who came to the Jordan, save us not from works of righteousness, but according to Your great mercy. Glory to Thee, Christ God, who sanctified the watery nature, watered my thirsty soul for piety with waters according to Thy ineffable goodness. Glory to You, Only Begotten Son and Word of God, nourish my heart with the manifestation of Your words. Glory to You, Almighty God, You alone work miracles, warm my cold soul with the understanding of Your miracles. Glory to Thee, Son of God, who was baptized in the Jordan and the whole world was enlightened, glory to Thee.

Accept this little prayer that we bring to You from the bottom of our hearts, and enlighten us in the darkness of the sins of those who sit with Your saving Baptism from John, so that through Your redemption from mental and physical illnesses, in the renewal of life, we may begin to walk the right way, and with all the saints, let us sing to You: Alleluia.

SINGING HOLY THEOPHIPANY

Baptism of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ
GOD IS WITH US: God is with us, understand the Gentiles, / and repent: / For God is with us. Hear to the last of the earth: / For God is with us. Those who are able, repent: / For God is with us. Even if you are able again, / and again you will be victorious: / For God is with us. And even if you hold counsel, / the Lord will destroy: / For God is with us. And the word, even if you say, / will not abide in you: / For God is with us. We will not be afraid of your fear, / we will be confused: / For God is with us. Let us sanctify the Lord our God, / and He will be our fear: / For God is with us. And if I trust in Him, / it will be for my sanctification: / For God is with us. And I will trust in Him, / and I will be saved by Him: / For God is with us. Behold the children that God gave us: / As God is with us. People walking in darkness / have seen a great light: / For God is with us. Living in the land and shadow of death, / the light will shine on you: / For God is with us. As a Child was born to us, / A Son, and was given to us: / As God is with us. His rulership was upon His frame: / For God is with us. And His peace knows no bounds: / For God is with us. And His Name is called, / Great Angel of the Council: / For God is with us. Wonderful Advisor: / For God is with us. God is strong, Ruler, / Chief of the world: / For God is with us. Father of the next century: / For God is with us. God is with us, understand the pagans, / and repent: / For God is with us. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is with us. And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. God is with us. Like God is with us. Troparion of the holiday, voice 1: In the Jordan I am baptized to You, O Lord, / Triple adoration appeared: / For the voice of your parents testified to You, / Named Your beloved Son, / and the Spirit in the form of a dove / Knowing the affirmation of your words. / Christ God appeared // and peace enlightenment, glory to You. Kontakion of the holiday, tone 4: Thou hast appeared this day to the whole universe,/ and Thy light, O Lord, has come upon us,/ in the minds of those who sing Thee:/ Thou hast come and Thou hast appeared,// The Unapproachable Light. VERSES ON LITIA: Dress yourself in light, like a robe, / for our sake you were honored to be after us, / this day you are dressed in streams of the Jordan, / not demanding these for purification, / but arranging generation for us with yourself. / Oh, miracle! / He cooks without fire, / and edifies without contrition, / and saves those who are enlightened in Him / Christ is God and the Savior of our souls. To You, in Dus and the fires, cleansing the sin of the world, / in vain the Baptist came to herself, / horrified and trembling, crying out, saying: / I do not dare to hold Your most pure top, / You sanctify me, Master, / by Your Divine appearance, / One who loves mankind. Come, let us imitate the wise virgins, / come, those who honor the Lord who appeared, / as the Bridegroom came to John. / Jordan, seeing You, was afraid and waited. / John cried out: / I do not dare to hold the top of the Immortal. / The Spirit descended in the form of a dove to sanctify the waters, / and a voice from Heaven: / This is My Son, / who came into the world to save the human race, / Lord, glory to Thee. Christ is baptized and ascends from the water, / for He brings together the world with Himself / and sees the heavens being parted, / even as Adam closed himself and those who are with him, / and the Spirit bears witness to the Divinity, / For like this a voice from Heaven foreshadows: / from there the Savior is testified our souls. The hand of the Baptist trembles, / when I touch Your most pure top; / the Jordan River will return, / not daring to serve You. / Because I was ashamed of Joshua, / why should I be afraid of my Creator without the name? / But Thou hast fulfilled all our vision, O our Savior, / that Thou mayest save the world by Thy appearance, / O One who loves mankind. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Lord, to fulfill what you have ordained from the ages, / from all creation you have received the servants of your mystery: / from an angel - Gabriel, from a man - a Virgin, / from Heaven - a star and from the waters - Jordan, / in which you consumed the iniquity of the world You, / Our Savior, glory to You. And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Today every creature is enlightened, / today all things rejoice, / heavenly and earthly together, / angels and men mingle, / where the King comes, and the order comes. / We went to the Jordan / and we see all John: / how does the Top, Not Made by Hands and Sinless, baptize? / Moreover, the apostolic voice echoes, in accordance with the cry: / the grace of God that saves all man has appeared, / illuminating and bestowing great mercy on the faithful. VERSES ON THE VERSE: On the Jordan River / seeing Thee coming to herself, John said: / Christ God, why did you come to the servant, / having no filth, Lord? / In whose name do I baptize You? / Father? But carry Him within You. / Son? But You Himself became incarnate. / Holy Spirit? / And this is to give the lips of the faithful. / God appear, have mercy on us. See the sea and run, / Jordan returns back. Seeing Thee the waters, O God, / saw Thee the waters and was afraid: / the Cherubim cannot stand against Thy glory, / look below the Seraphim, / but with the fear of the coming, / they wear them, / they glorify Thy power. / With them, O Generous One, we proclaim Your praise, saying: / Appear, God, have mercy on us. Why is the sea when you run away? / And you, Jordan, how did you return back? Today the Creator of Heaven and earth / comes in flesh to the Jordan, / asking for Baptism, the Sinless One, / that he may cleanse the world from the flattery of the enemy, / and be baptized by the servant, the Lord of all, / and grant purification with water to the human race. / To him we cry: / Our God has appeared, glory to Thee. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. The Sun is from the Virgin, / seeing a bright lamp from the barren, / asking for Baptism in the Jordan, / crying out to Him with horror and joy: / You sanctify me, O Master, / by Your Divine appearance. NOW YOU RELEASE Now you release Your servant, O Master, according to Your word, in peace; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, a light for the revelation of tongues, and the glory of Your people Israel. Troparion of the holiday, voice 1 (three times): In the Jordan I am baptized to You, O Lord, / Triple adoration appeared: / For the voice of your parents testified to You, / naming Your beloved Son, / and the Spirit in the form of a dove / announced your affirmation to your words. / Christ God appears / and the world is enlightened, glory to Thee. I will bless the Lord (Psalm 33) I will bless the Lord at all times; I will make His praise in my mouth.
My soul will glory in the Lord, that the meek may hear and rejoice. Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. Seek the Lord, and hear me, and deliver me from all my sorrows. Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed. This beggar cried out, and the Lord heard and saved him from all his sorrows. The angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him and deliver them. Taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man who trusts in Nan. Fear the Lord, all of you, holy Him, for there is no hardship for those who fear Him. With riches you become poor and hungry: but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good. END OF THE GREAT COMPLEMENT. BEGINNING OF MORNING

(the lights are turned off, the sixth psalm is read: Psalms 3, 37, 62, 87, 102, 142)

Sedalen, voice 3: I appeared to You in the Jordan, the Savior, / and I was baptized by You from the Forerunner, Christ, / You were testified to the beloved Son, / in the same way, You appeared without beginning to the Father, / And the Holy Spirit Having descended upon you, / and being enlightened, we cry out: / glory to God who exists in the Trinity. Glory, even now: You sanctified the streams of the Jordan, / You crushed the sinful power, O Christ our God, / You bowed the hand of Yourself, the Forerunner, / And You saved the human race from flattery. / We also pray to You: save our souls. Sedalen, voice 5: You were surrounded by Jordanian streams, / Who were gloriously dressed in light, / in which you renewed Adam’s nature, / crushed by evil disobedience, to the Word of God. / In the same way we praise You and we all glorify Your holy appearance. Glory, even now: The Jordan river, / why were you surprised, in vain the Invisible One was naked? / We saw and trembled, - he said, / and why didn’t we want to be afraid of this and go in? / His angels were terrified, looking, / Heaven was terrified, and the earth trembled, / and the sea, and everything visible and invisible, was in turmoil. / Christ appeared on the Jordan to sanctify the waters. Magnification: We magnify You, Life-Giving Christ, for our sake, now baptized in the flesh by John in the waters of the Jordan. Selected Psalm: God, be gracious to us, and bless us. / Enlighten Your face on us, have mercy on us. / Come to Him and be enlightened, / And your faces will not be ashamed. / River aspirations rejoice the city of God. / The voice of the Lord on the waters. / The Lord is on many waters. / Having taken away the rivers, O Lord, the rivers have taken away their voices, / From the voices of many waters. / For this reason I remembered Thee from the land of Jordan and Ermonim. / For You are the source of life, in Your light we will see light. / See the sea and run, Jordan return back. / Thou hast strengthened the sea by Thy power. / You erased the heads of the serpents in the water. / You have broken up the sources and streams. / You saw the water, O God, you saw the water, and you were afraid. / Thy ways are in the sea, and Thy paths are in many waters. / Because Thy works are magnified, O Lord, Thou hast done all things with wisdom. According to the polyeleos of the sedal: Come, we will see the faithful, where Christ was baptized, / let us follow the rest to the river Jordan, / to the voice of one crying in the wilderness, / and we will see there the Maker of Adam, / ordained to the hand of a slave for the ineffable compassion, / and to Him we will cry out loudly : / You came and appeared in the Jordan to sanctify the waters. Prokeimenon, voice 4 You saw the sea and ran, / Jordan returned back. VERSE: What is it to you, O sea, that you ran away, and to you, Jordan, that you returned? Gospel Reading from Mark, chapter 1:9-11 (translated into Russian) At that time Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And immediately, coming out of the water, he saw the heavens opening and the Spirit like a dove descending on Him. And a voice came from heaven: “You are My Beloved Son, I am well pleased with You.” Glory: Let everyone rejoice today, / I will appear to Christ in the Jordan. And now: Let everyone rejoice today, / I will appear to Christ in the Jordan. Stichera, tone 6: God the Word appeared in flesh to the human race, / standing to be baptized in the Jordan, / and the Forerunner said to Him: / How will I stretch out my hand / and touch the top of Him who holds all things? / Even though you are a Child from Mary, / but I know You, the Eternal God, / you walk on the earth, sung by the Seraphim, / and the servant of the Lord did not learn to baptize. / Incomprehensible Lord, glory to Thee. Irmos of the Epiphany Canon: Song 1. Irmos 1: He opened the bottom of the depths / and draws in His dry land, / in it having covered the contrary, / the Lord, strong in battle, / is glorified. Irmos 1: I have heard, O Lord, Thy voice that Thou didst speak, / the voice of one crying in the wilderness, / for you have thundered over many waters, / bearing witness to your Son, / all the Spirit who has descended, cry out: / you are the Christ, the wisdom and power of God. Irmos 2: The fire of the secret vision was cleansed, / the prophet of men sings new actions, / the voice proclaims, splashing with the Spirit, / the incarnation of the ineffable Word, / by which the mighty powers are shaken. Song 5. Irmos 1: Jesus, the Chief of life, / resolves the condemnation that is coming on the first-created Adam, / but purification, like God, without demanding, / cleanses the fallen in the Jordan, / killing enmity in him, / bestowing peace on all minds. Irmos 2: The enemy of dark and defiled poison / by cleansing the Spirit, / to a new unblemished path, / leading into unapproachable joy, I alone will approach, / to whom God is reconciled. Song 6. Irmos 2: The longed-for is revealed with the all-blessed voice of the Father, / Whom I will vomit from the womb: / to her, - says, - This is a natural Son, / Who is luminous, / uttered from the human race: / But My Word is living and Man is providential. Song 7. Irmos 1: The pious youths, who have partaken of the fiery furnace, / kept the rustling spirit of dew unharmed / and the descent of God’s Angel. / At the same time, sprinkled with flames, I sang with gratitude: / O Lord and God of the fathers, blessed art thou. Irmos 2: The high flames of the cave flames fell like a stream of the serpent’s heads, / carrying the pious youths, / calming the uncontrollable darkness of sin, / but washing everything with the dew of the Spirit. Song 8. Irmos 1: The glorious mystery of the Babylonian cave was revealed, / pouring out dew, / as if with streams the name of the immaterial Fire was perceived by the Jordan / and embraced in the flesh of the baptized Creator, / Whom people will bless and exalt for all ages. Irmos 2: The creation is free and is known / and the sons of Light before being darkened; / one representative of darkness will stand. / Now let him diligently bless the guilty / formerly accursed tongues of all inheritance. CHORUS OF THE HOLIDAY Magnify my soul, most honorable and most glorious of the hosts on high, the Most Pure Virgin Mary. Every tongue is perplexed to praise according to its inheritance, / but the mind and the most peaceful sing of Thee, Mother of God, are amazed, / but, O Good Being, accept faith, / for our divine love weighs: / For Thou art the Representative of Christians, We magnify Thee. Magnify, my soul, / asking from the Forerunner of Baptism. Magnify, my soul, / He who came to be baptized in the Jordan. David, come by the Spirit to those who are enlightened, - / now come, - sing to God, - / by faith, - saying, - be enlightened! / Adam cried out to this beggar in his fall, for the Lord heard Him, / came and renewed the corruptible with the streams of the Jordan. Magnify, my soul, / Testified by the voice of the Father. Magnify, my soul, / the One of the Trinity, who bowed his neck and received Baptism. Isaiah, wash yourself, make yourself clean! - he says, / leave wickedness before the Lord. / You who are thirsty, come to the living water: / for Christ sprinkles with water, renewing, those who come to Him in faith / and baptizes with the Spirit to the ageless life. Prophet, come to Me, / stretch out your hand and baptize Me quickly. Prophet, leave me now and baptize Me, desiring: / for I have come to fulfill all righteousness. We are kept by grace, faithfulness, and the seal. / As the destroyer, the Jews of Prague, fled from ancient times, was bloodied, / so for us the original Divine this rebirth will be a bath. / From here and the Trinity we will see the Unstoppable Light. Today the Virgin gives birth to the Lord inside the den. Today the Lord is born like a baby from the Virgin Mother. It is inconvenient for us to love, as silence is more convenient through fear, but for the love of the Virgin to weave long-form songs is inconvenient to eat: but also give Mother strength, if there is will. Today the Lord / bows his neck under the hand of the Forerunner. Oh, more than the mind of Your Christmas miracles! / All-pure Bride, Blessed Mother, / having received all-perfect salvation, / we worthily praise, as the Benefactor, / bearing the gift of a song of thanksgiving. Today John baptizes the Lord, / in the streams of the Jordan. Today the Lord / buries human sin with waters. When Moses was led by the bush, she came, made with strange customs: / as if she had been saved, bearing Fire, the Virgin, luminous, having given birth to the Benefactor, / she was revealed in the streams of the Jordan. Today the Lord is testified from above, / Beloved Son. Today the Lord / has come to sanctify the watery nature. Today the Lord / Baptism is accepted by the hand of the Forerunner. By anointing the human being, the King Without Beginning, / the Spirit with communion, having washed away with clean streams, / and put to shame the exalted fortress of darkness, / now in unceasing adoration of life. VERSES on praising: Let every breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord from heaven, / praise Him in the highest. / A song to God is fitting for you. Praise Him, all His Angels, / praise Him, all His Powers. / A song to God is fitting for you. To create judgment in them is written, this glory will be to all His saints. Light from Light, / Christ the world rose up, our Savior, / God appeared. / To this, people, let us bow. Praise God in His saints, praise Him in strengthening His power. How shall we honor Thee, O Christ, / servant, the Lord with dignity? / Like in the waters you renewed us all. Praise Him according to His strength, praise Him according to the abundance of His majesty. You, who were baptized in the Jordan, our Savior, / sanctified these waters, / ordained the hand of a servant, / and healed the passions of the world. / Great is the mystery of Your appearance, / O Lord, loving of mankind, glory to You. Praise Him with the trumpet, praise Him with the psaltery and the harp. The True Light has appeared / and bestows enlightenment on everyone, / Christ is baptized with us, / Who is above all purity, / bestows sanctification on water, / and this purification happens to souls, / which is earthly manifested and understood above Heaven. / By bathing is salvation, but by water is the Spirit, / for the sake of immersion for the sake of God, our sunrise occurs. / Wonderful are Your works, O Lord, glory to You. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You are clothed with the waters of the Jordan, O Savior, / clothed with Light, like a robe, / and you bowed the head of the Forerunner, Who measured the sky in a span. / May you turn the world from flattery and save it, / as a Lover of Humanity. And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Today Christ came to the Jordan to be baptized, / today John touches the Lady on top.
/ The Powers of Heaven were terrified, / seeing the glorious mystery. / Seeing the sea and running, / Having seen the Jordan, return. / We, having been enlightened, cry out: / glory to the God who appeared, / and was seen on earth, / and who enlightened the world. LITURGY

(three times) APOSTOLIC AND GOSPEL READINGS Epistle to Titus of the Holy Apostle Paul, chapter 2:11-14, chapter 3:4-7 My son Titus, the grace of God has appeared, saving all people, instructing us so that we, rejecting ungodliness and worldly desires, lived chastely, righteously, and piously in this present age, awaiting the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for Himself a special people, zealous for good works . When the goodness and love of God our Savior appeared, it was not because of works of righteousness that we had done, but according to His mercy He saved us through the font of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, which He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we, justified by His grace, may become heirs in the hope of eternal life. Gospel of Matthew, chapter 3: 13-17 At that time Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptized by him. John prevented Him, saying: “I need to be baptized by You, and You come to me?” But Jesus answered and said to him: “Allow it now; for this is how it becomes for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he admits Him. And having been baptized, Jesus immediately came out of the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and descending on Him. And behold, a voice from heaven, saying: “This is My Beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased!” Instead Worthy: Magnify my soul, most honorable and most glorious of the hosts on high, the Virgin Most Pure Mother of God

Baptism

Description and meaning in Orthodoxy

In all iconographic images of the “Baptism of the Lord,” the Savior is depicted in the center of the plot, standing in the waters of the river. The water flow divides the picture into two banks. On one of them stands John the Baptist, on the other there are angels participating in the sacrament. The two banks on the icon symbolize earthly existence and eternal life in the Heavenly Kingdom, which were united together in the incarnation of God in human form - Jesus Christ.

The Savior unites the mortal and the divine, wanting to enlighten people and save their sinful souls from suffering. The banks of the river on icons are often depicted as steep and angular, as a sign of the upcoming crucifixion of Christ on the cross.

On ancient icons Christ is depicted naked, on more modern ones - with a loincloth. He humbly and reverently bows his head before the Baptist, whose hand is raised and raised in a gesture of blessing Jesus. John's hand touching the Lord remains incorruptible throughout the ages.

In the background of the icon are rocky mountain peaks reaching towards the heavens. The mountains resemble a ladder, as if leading the righteous to the Kingdom of God. Their steep slopes are a symbol of spiritual aspiration and elevation above worldly existence.

The main feature of the “Baptism of the Lord” icon is the presence of the Holy Trinity in the plot. The Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus receiving baptism in the form of a heavenly dove and, looking at the image, the invisible presence of God the Father is felt.

The display of the event in icon painting testifies to the passage of Christ through the sacrament of Baptism, like other Orthodox people. John baptized the people for a long time, washing away their sins with water and turning their souls and bodies to the Lord God.

Orthodox Life

Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born from the Father before all ages, Light from Light, enlightening all things, in the last year from the Most Holy Virgin Mary incorruptible incarnate and into this world for salvation He's come! You did not suffer to see the human race tormented by the devil, and for this reason, on the bright day of Your Epiphany, you came to the Jordan to be a sinner and a tax collector to be baptized by John, without sin This one, may you fulfill all righteousness and may you take away the sins of the whole world in the waters of the Jordan, like a Lamb God, to bear them on Yourself and redeem them with Baptism on the Cross, Your Most Pure Blood. For this reason, I immersed You in the waters, the heavens closed by Adam were opened to You, and the Holy Spirit descended on You in the form of a dove, bringing enlightenment and deification to our nature, and proclaiming Your Divine Father With a heavenly voice You are well pleased, You have done His will and You have taken away your sins and You have already prepared Yourself for slaughter, just as You Himself declared: “For this reason the Father loves Me, because I lay down My soul, that I may receive it again,” and so on this bright day, You, Lord, You laid the beginning of our redemption from the Fall ancestor. For this reason, all the powers of heaven rejoice and all creation rejoices, awaiting their liberation from the work of decay, saying: Enlightenment has come, grace has appeared, deliverance has come, the world is enlightened and people are restored are fulfilled with righteousness. Let heaven and earth rejoice today, and let the whole world play; let the rivers splash; Let springs and lakes, abysses and seas rejoice, for their nature has been sanctified today by Divine Baptism. Let the congregation of men rejoice today, for their nature has now returned to the first nobility and they all sing with joy: The time of the Epiphany. Come mentally to the Jordan, we will see a great vision in it: Christ is coming to Baptism. Christ comes to Jordan. Our Christ buries our sins in water. Christ comes to look for the kidnapped and lost sheep and brings her into heaven. As we celebrate the remembrance of this Divine sacrament, we fervently pray to You, O Lord who loves mankind: grant us, who thirst for Your voice, to come to You, the Source of ever-living waters, so that we may draw in Your grace and the forgiveness of our sins and the renunciation of wickedness and worldly lusts; Let us live chastely and virginally, righteously and piously in this present age, waiting for the blessed hope and the manifestation of Thy glory, the Great God and our Savior, that Thou mayest save us not from our deeds, but according to Thy by her mercy and by the renewing of Thy Holy Spirit by the washing of regeneration, which abounds Thou hast poured out that, having been justified by His grace, we will be heirs of eternal life in Thy Kingdom, where, with all the saints, grant us to glorify Thy all-holy Name with Thy Beginning with the Father and with Your Most Holy and Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

The history of the appearance of the icon “Baptism of the Lord”

The history of the appearance of the first iconographic images of the baptism of Jesus Christ goes back to ancient times. Today there are various options for writing the icon, united by the main common features of the sacred sacrament performed in the waters of the Jordan River.

John the Baptist (Baptist) became the Baptist of Jesus. Born six months earlier than the Savior, he became his faithful companion. John was the first to see the divine origin of Jesus and realize the coming of the Messiah, sent by God the Father for the enlightenment and salvation of mankind.

When Jesus asked him to perform the rite of holy baptism, John humbly bowed before the Lord and said that it was He who should baptize him with the Holy Spirit. But the Savior insisted on carrying out the sacrament in the order that befits people, for His Divine essence was embodied in a human body.

During the baptismal ceremony, those present heard the voice of God, announcing that Jesus is God the Son. What was happening on the banks of the Jordan was called “Epiphany” by the laity. Sometimes you can hear another name - “Festival of Lights”, because Jesus granted salvation and enlightenment to all humanity.

The event of baptism is embodied not only in icons, but also in church mosaics, the oldest of which date back to the 5th century. In ancient images, Jesus stands naked in the waters of the Jordan, bowing his head before the Baptist. God the Father looks invisibly at Christ and the Holy Spirit descends. The main storyline was preserved in subsequent depictions of the sacrament.

Canonical troparion of the Epiphany of the Lord, interpretation and text

no comments

The Troparion for the Feast of the Epiphany, popularly called simply Epiphany, was written in honor of one of the most ancient Christian holidays. Like all the twelve feasts dedicated to Jesus, it is based on a gospel event. As you know, the Savior began his preaching at the age of 30, and before setting out on this path, he was baptized at the hands of the Prophet and Forerunner John in the waters of the Jordan River. In the troparion of Epiphany, the meaning of this holiday is explained in a brief dogmatic form - the simultaneous appearance of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit to the Baptist John and all the people present.

The Orthodox troparion of Epiphany is a prayer to the Holy Trinity

The description of the Epiphany, the troparion of which sings in all the Persons of the Holy Trinity, says that Christ approached the Jordan during the sermon of the Forerunner. Immediately the prophet baptized the people, washing them with the waters of the sacred river. This custom was not invented by John - among the Jews, the custom of symbolic washing as a sign of repentance and cleansing existed in ancient times. The author of the text of the troparion of Epiphany tells that during Baptism God revealed himself in all forms: the Son was baptized in the Jordan, the Holy Spirit descended from heaven in the form of a dove, and the Father announced from heaven that the One being Baptized was His beloved Son, whose sermons should be listened to .

You can read the troparion of Epiphany before taking holy water - agiasma

It is customary in the Orthodox Church to read and sing the text of the troparion of Epiphany during the Great Blessing of Water. This ritual always attracts a huge number of believers, since Epiphany water, consecrated with a special rite (in the church it is usually called agiasma), is considered a universal healing remedy for mental and physical illnesses, and therefore is consumed in small quantities daily. At home, you can read the troparion of Epiphany before each reception of holy water and prosphora, as well as on the day of the holiday - January 19.

“I am baptized in You, O Lord, in the Jordan...”

Epiphany is one of the main Christian holidays. The holiday of Epiphany ends the Christmas holidays, which last from January 7 to January 19. The holiday begins on the evening of January 18, when all Orthodox Christians celebrate Epiphany Eve.

On this day, the 30-year-old Lord and Savior Jesus Christ received Baptism in the waters of the Jordan River. The great prophet John the Baptist, sent to earth before that by God, baptized Him to prepare people to accept the Lord. Saint John preached near the Jordan and baptized those who came to him. A description of the event of Baptism is given in all four Evangelists (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-23; John 1:33-34), as well as in many stichera and troparia of the holiday . The beginning of the celebration of the Epiphany of the Lord dates back to apostolic times. He is mentioned in the Apostolic Constitutions. The testimony of St. Clement of Alexandria about the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord and the night vigil performed before this holiday has been preserved from the 2nd century. The holy fathers of the 4th century: Gregory the Theologian, Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose of Milan, John Chrysostom, Augustine and many others left us their deeply edifying teachings, delivered by them on the feast of the Epiphany. The holy fathers - Anatoly, Archbishop of Constantinople (V century), Andrew and Sophronius of Jerusalem (VII century), Cosmas of Maium and John of Damascus (VIII century) - compiled the canons, and Herman, Patriarch of Constantinople, Joseph the Studite, Theophanes and Byzantium ( 9th century) - many hymns for the feast of the Epiphany, which are still sung on the day of the holiday. The Feast of Epiphany is also called Epiphany because at the Baptism of the Lord the Most Holy Trinity appeared to the world - God the Father with a word from heaven about the Son; The Son by baptism from the Baptist John, and the Holy Spirit by descending on the Son in the form of a dove. Since ancient times, this holiday was called the Day of Enlightenment and the Feast of Lights, because God is Light and appeared to enlighten “those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death” (Matthew 4:16) and to save the fallen human race by grace.

The Feast of the Epiphany is also called the Day of Enlightenment and the Feast of Lights - from the ancient custom of performing the baptism of catechumens on the eve of it (on the Eve of Evening), which is, in essence, spiritual enlightenment.

The Monk John of Damascus said that the Lord was baptized not because He Himself needed purification, but in order to “bury human sin with the waters,” to fulfill the law, to reveal the sacrament of the Holy Trinity and, finally, to sanctify the “watery nature” and to give us an image and example Baptism. On the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the Holy Church affirms our faith in the highest, incomprehensible mystery of the Three Persons of the One God and teaches us to equally honestly confess and glorify the Holy Trinity, Consubstantial and Indivisible. The Church shows the need for Baptism for believers in Christ, instills a feeling of deep gratitude to the Enlightener and Purifier of our sinful nature. She teaches that our salvation and cleansing from sins is possible only by the power of the grace of the Holy Spirit and therefore it is necessary to worthily preserve these grace-filled gifts of holy Baptism in order to preserve in the purity of that precious garment about which the feast of Epiphany tells us: “Those who were baptized into Christ, put on Christ "(Gal. 3:27).

The day preceding the feast of the Epiphany is called Epiphany Christmas Eve (Epiphany Evening). It is similar to Christmas Eve and is also a day of strict fasting. On Epiphany Eve and on the day of the Epiphany itself, in churches after the Divine Liturgy, the rite of great consecration of water is performed. Blessed Epiphany water is a special shrine. Troparion of the Baptism of the Lord (voice 1) In the Jordan I am baptized to You, O Lord, / Triple adoration appeared: / For the voice of your parents testified to You, / calling Your beloved Son, / and the Spirit in the form of a dove / made known to your words the affirmation. / Christ God appeared / and world of enlightenment, glory to You. Kontakion of the Baptism of the Lord (Tone 4) Thou hast appeared this day to the whole universe,/ and Thy light, O Lord, has come upon us,/ in the minds of those who sing Thee:/ Thou hast come and Thou hast appeared,// The Unapproachable Light.

What do they ask for in front of the icon?

Prayers before the miraculous icon “Baptism of the Lord” help believers in resolving various worldly problems, including the most difficult and hopeless situations. The image has great power and bestows Divine protection and grace on those who turn.

Orthodox Christians turn to the shrine, trusting in the Lord’s help and assistance in the hope of:

  • healing of physical and mental illnesses;
  • calming suffering and sorrow;
  • getting rid of melancholy and despondency;
  • guidance on the true path of those who have strayed from righteous guidelines in worldly life;
  • strengthening faith, resilience and fortitude;
  • cleansing from sin and taking the righteous path of correction;
  • restoration of justice;
  • improving the welfare of honest workers.

You can approach the shrine within the walls of an Orthodox church and at home. For an independent prayer service, it is recommended to purchase an image and place it at home. The shrine is especially revered on the feast of Epiphany, which is celebrated annually on January 19. On this day, solemn prayer texts are read in front of the icon.

All water for Epiphany, by the will of God, is considered holy. Endowed with special power, Epiphany water washes away sins from repentant sinners, cleanses the body and soul, and has healing properties. On this day, it is customary to plunge into water and pray fervently in front of the holy image.

The icon “Baptism of the Lord,” placed at home, protects its inhabitants from the machinations of evil forces and negative influences, becoming a protective talisman for the family.
