The power of the Almighty resolved the infertility that tormented the righteous Elizabeth for many years: She conceived you, holy Messenger of the Lord, and in hiding for five months, saying: Just as the Lord did for me in the days when he saw my fervent prayers. When the Virgin received Jesus in the womb, the Holy Spirit prophesied and proclaimed with a great voice: “Where does this come from, how will the Mother of our Most High come to me!” With her are those who rejoice, crying out to the Lord: Hallelujah.

Ikos 3.

I must pass before the Almighty with the spirit and power of Elijah, from the womb of your mother I was filled with this Holy Spirit, from there the wonderful Seer appeared now, when in your mother’s womb now, he now rejoiced with the joys of the appearance of the Mother of the Most High. Having now recognized the Lord, carrying the Lord in the womb of the Blessed One, He now preached in a holy voice: Having become like the things of the Lord, the most holy began to be. We who are reverently surprised by this occasion, joyfully offer you:

Rejoice, even in the womb of your mother, the Most High presented you with a miraculous phenomenon; Rejoice how the Lord’s appearance was revealed for you and your mother Elizabeth.

Rejoice as you have fulfilled the command of the Holy Spirit; rejoice, just as she, a wonderful seer, appeared.

Rejoice, as from her the Most Pure Virgin Mary was appointed as a spouse; rejoice, as she was called the Mother of the Most High.

Rejoice, just as Thy seedless child was called Holy; Rejoice, O Wise Holy One who has appeared.

Rejoice, blessed union by the divine; rejoice, barren life, wonderful vegetation.

Rejoice, having surprised people with your appearance; Rejoice, O speaker of the holy Word.

Prayer to Saint John the Baptist

To the Repositor of Christ, preacher of repentance, do not despise me who repents, but copulating with the heavenly ones, pray to the Master for me, unworthy, sad, weak and sad Oh, I have fallen into many troubles, troubled by the stormy thoughts of my mind. Because I am a den of evil deeds, I have no end to sinful customs, my mind is nailed down by earthly things. What will I do? We don’t know. And to whom shall I run, that my soul may be saved? Just to you, Saint John, give your name of grace, for you are before the Lord according to the Mother of God, greater than all those who were born, for you were honored to touch Stand above the King Christ, who takes away the sins of the world, the Lamb of God. Pray to him for my sinful soul, so that from now on, in the first ten hours, I will bear a good burden and accept retribution with those who are last. To her, the Baptist of Christ, the honest Forerunner, the extreme prophet, the first martyr in grace, the teacher of fasters and hermits, the teacher of purity and the close friend of Christ! I pray to you, I come running to you: do not deny me from your intercession, but raise me up, having fallen into many sins. Renew my soul with repentance, as with the second baptism, since you are the ruler of both: with baptism you wash away ancestral sin, with repentance you cleanse every day It was bad. Cleanse me, who have been defiled by my sins, and force me to enter, even if anything evil enters, into the Kingdom of Heaven. Amen.

A little from the life of St. John

John the Baptist was a long-awaited son who was born a little earlier than Jesus Christ. The Lord gave the parents such a pure and bright child for a reason; he entrusted him with the special mission of a prophet. They called the Saint exactly that name because Archangel Gabriel himself said so when he appeared to the priest Zechariah right in the church.

Mother John is inextricably linked with the Virgin Mary, as she was her distant relative. Perhaps that is why the Baptist is considered one of the most powerful Saints - after all, he is a relative of Jesus Christ. John chose the righteous path, constantly talked with the Lord, went to the uninhabited Judean desert and wandered until he was 30 years old, praying to the Almighty every minute. John was waiting for God himself to allow him to do the most important thing - public service.

People knew that the Forerunner led a correct lifestyle and came to him to pray and confess all their sins. John warned one and all that very soon the One who would be a real salvation for people would appear - and this is Jesus Christ. The Baptist was called the “bright morning star,” a real prophet who foretold the coming of the Strong Man. It is John the Baptist who completes the history of the Old Testament and opens a new chapter - the New Testament. It was the Forerunner who baptized the Son of God Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.

Today the church celebrates several days of remembrance in honor of St. John: September 23 - the conception of John, June 24 - the birth of the prophet, August 29 - the beheading of John the Baptist, February 24 - the first and second discovery of the head, October 12 - the transfer of the right hand to Gatchina.

Orthodox calendar about every day

Orthodox calendar: Orthodox, Church and Christian holidays.

The church year is an alternation of weekdays and holidays. On weekdays, a person is called to work “by the sweat of his brow to earn his bread.” Holidays are given in order to feel liberation, to rise above the bustle and routine of the world, to feel involved in the highest of worlds, “where there are no illnesses, sorrows and sighs, but endless life.” Since ancient times, holiday cycles have been associated with the seasons. The pagans associated them with the worship of the forces of nature, the cult of which in the Old Testament was replaced by gratitude to the Creator for the universe. And although the connection between holidays and the seasons has not completely lost its power, since God is present in everything, in the plant and animal world, in human works, it nevertheless faded into the background, giving way to a spiritual foundation built on the Sacred Scriptures. The history of Orthodox holidays dates back to the times of the Old Testament. Each of the Orthodox holidays is dedicated to the remembrance of the most important events in the life of Jesus Christ and the Mother of God, as well as the memory of saints...
