Russian-Greek phrasebook for tourists

An unforgettable trip to Greece can be complemented by the impressions of communicating with local residents in their language. True Hellenes are very friendly and sociable, and are always happy to help. Especially if you address them in their native Greek language. In addition, signs in Greek can often be easily read, due to the fact that many letters of the Greek alphabet are similar to Russian ones.

The short Russian-Greek phrasebook with transcription presented below contains a set of the most necessary words and phrases for the inexperienced tourist. Transcription column gives the pronunciation of Greek words and phrases with accents. The sounds of the Greek language are almost identical to the sounds of Russian and are indicated in the transcription by signs that we understand. Exceptions are sounds:

  • ɣ - sound “g”, back-lingual fricative, similar to Ukrainian
  • ð - a sound similar to the voiced English interdental “d”, as in the words: th is, th ere, th an
  • θ - a sound similar to the unvoiced English interdental sound “t”, as in the words: th ree, th row, th eatre

Trisagion... Holy Trinity... according to Our Father...

Orthodox prayer books have adopted abbreviated designations for prayers that are known and often used by everyone. One of these abbreviations is “The Trisagion according to Our Father.” Sometimes the same abbreviation takes the form “Trisagion... Holy Trinity... Our Father...” It means that the following prayers are said in order:

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (three times).

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquities; Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord, have mercy (three times).

Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, just as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

“The Trisagion according to Our Father” is an integral part of the “usual beginning” of the service and any prayer rule. These prayers are recognized as one of the most ancient.

Jesus Prayer

[Kyrie Jesus Christ , Ie tu Theu, eleison-me tone amartalon]

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner

Our Father

[? μήν.]

Our Father, who art in heaven, may Your name shine, may Your kingdom come: Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth, give us this day our daily bread, and Forgive us our debts, just as we also become our debtors, and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. [For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages].

Symbol of faith

4. έντα. 5. I believe in one God the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to Whom all things were. For our sake, man and our salvation came down from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human. She was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And again the coming one will be judged with glory by the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the life-giving Lord, who proceeds from the Father, who is worshiped and glorified with the Father and the Son, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I hope for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the next century. Amen.

Quiet Light of Holy Glory, Immortal Heavenly Father, Holy Blessed Jesus Christ: having come to the west of the sun, having seen the evening light, we sing of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, God. You are worthy at all times to be the voice of the reverend, Son of God, give life: in the same way the world glorifies you

Song of Simeon the God-Receiver

Now do You let Your servant go, O Master, according to Your word, in peace; for my eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared before the face of all men, a light unto the revelation of the tongue, and the glory of Thy people Israel.

Video: Trisagion in Bulgarian chant

The so-called “Bulgarian chant” spread in Russia from the middle of the 17th century.

The Bulgarian origin of the chant has not been established with certainty, since Bulgaria lost its original singing after the establishment of the Turkish yoke. It is only clear that the chant was borrowed by the Russian Church after the annexation of Ukraine, where such singing was used in many churches and monasteries. The beautiful and strict melodies of the chant quickly fell in love with Russian Orthodox Christians.

The Trisagion is one of the most beautiful chants. The words of the chant connect heaven and earth, the angelic praise and the request for mercy expressed by people.

Author: Natalya Sazonova.

It is best known in the Latin Church for its use on Good Friday, and is also used in the Liturgy of the Hours and in some Catholic services.

having fulfilled all the supervision (housebuilding) of the salvation of the human race, the Church prays for the repose of our departed fathers and brothers.

Lord Jesus Christ our God, Thy peace given by man, and the gift of the Most Holy Spirit, still in life and with us, forever granting as an inalienable inheritance to the faithful: this grace was most manifested by Thy disciple and apostle this day, and established these tongues with fiery lips: in the image the entire human race has received the knowledge of God with its tongue into the hearing of the ear, enlightened by the light of the Spirit, and the charms like darkness have changed, and the sensual and fiery tongue of dispensation, and the supernatural action, having learned faith in You, and to theologize You with the Father and the Holy Spirit, in one Divinity , and strength, and power we will be enlightened. You are the Father’s radiance, His beings and natures, the unchangeable and immovable outline, the source of wisdom and grace: open my sinner’s mouth, and teach me what is worthy, and to pray for their needs: For You know many of my sins, the multitude of them, but Yours compassion will overcome these immeasurable ones. Behold, with fear I stand before You, into the abyss of Your mercy the despair of my soul has been plunged: feed my belly with the word of ineffable wisdom, rule all creation with power, a quiet refuge for the overwhelmed, and tell me the way, I will go elsewhere. Give the Spirit of Thy wisdom to my thoughts, grant the Spirit of reason to my madness, grant the Spirit of Thy fear to my autumn deeds, and renew the Right Spirit in my womb, and confirm the desire of my thoughts with the Master Spirit: that I may be guided every day by Thy Good Spirit to do what is useful, that I may be worthy to do the commandments. Yours, and Yours, will always remember the glorious coming, and the tormenting things we have done. And do not despise me with the corruptible temptations of this world, but desire to strengthen the treasures of future perceptions. Thou art the Master: as if anyone asks for Thy name, he freely receives from Thy ever-present God and Father. In the same way, I am a sinner at the coming of Your Holy Spirit, I pray for Your goodness, if you have asked, reward me with salvation. To her, Lord, you are rich in every good deed, and the good giver, as you are, give abundantly to what we ask: you are compassionate and merciful, having been a sinless companion of our flesh; Grant therefore, Lord, to Thy people Thy bounty: hear us from Thy holy heaven: sanctify us with the power of Thy saving right hand: cover us with the shelter of Thy wing, so that we may not despise the work of Thy hand. We sin against You alone, but we serve You alone. We cannot bow down to a foreign god; our Lord, we cannot stretch our hands below to another god. Forgive us our sins, and accept our kneeling prayers, extend a helping hand to all of us, accept the prayer of all, like a pleasant incense acceptable before Your most good Kingdom.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us

Origin

In 438-439. An earthquake occurred in Constantinople. People rushed to the churches. People in repentance begged the Lord for mercy and forgiveness. Among the crowd of worshipers was a boy whose name has not been preserved by history. Suddenly he was lifted to heaven. There he heard the Angels singing:

“Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal...”

When the boy was back on the ground, he retold what he had heard to Patriarch Proclus. Then people began to sing the angelic song, adding to it a human request for mercy: “have mercy on us!” The end of the earthquake was a sign of mercy from the Lord.

After this incident, the Trisagion Hymn began to be used in worship.

Useful materials

In addition to the legend about its supernatural origin, there is an explanation by another Byzantine theologian, the monk Job. He believes that the song originated much earlier than the 5th century. Since this century it has only become known and widespread.

According to Job, the song of the Trisagion is a combination of three elements:

This is the same explanation of the origin of the Trisagion given by Nicholas Cabasilas, a Byzantine theologian of the 14th century:

“This song was received from the angels, borrowed from the psalm book of the prophet, accepted by the Church of Christ and dedicated to the Trinity, for the word: holy, called out three times, is the word of the angels; and words; God, mighty and immortal, these are the words of blessed David when he says: my soul thirsts for God, the mighty, the living (Ps. 41:3); the acceptance and union of the latter with the former and the addition of prayer, that is, have mercy on us, is the work of the Church, which knows and confesses the One God in the Trinity, in order to show in part the agreement of the Old Testament with the New.”

However, this version does not cancel the supernatural nature of the chant. Probably, both stories about the origin of prayer complement each other.

Liturgical practice

The first evidence of the liturgical use of the Trisagion Song is provided by the materials of the Council of Chalcedon on October 8 - November 1, 451. It says that the fathers of the Council sang this hymn among other liturgical songs.

In the Orthodox service, the Trisagion Hymn is used:
