King Solomon's prayers for money and wisdom

Introduction

This publication aims to introduce our reader to the Syrian collection of hymns, discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, but not yet published in Russian, the so-called Odes of Solomon, which, according to the most prominent scholar in the field of Syrian literature S. Brok, is “one of the most beautiful and at the same time the most problematic work of early Christianity.”
Until the beginning of the 19th century. the Odes of Solomon was known only from mentions in Nikephoros, Pseudo-Athanasius and from a single quotation from Lactantius. In 1812, the Danish bishop F. Munter first published a collection of five odes that he discovered in a Coptic manuscript belonging to the British Museum (Add. 5114) and containing the text of the Gnostic treatise Pistis Sophia. The fragments of the Odes placed in the Pistis Sophia did not allow any reasonable conclusion to be made regarding their origin, so a comprehensive study of this monument became possible only after J. Rendell Harris, on January 4, 1909, examined the 15th century manuscript. , discovered the Syriac text of the Odes and Psalms of Solomon. Three months after his discovery, Harris made a brief report about the find, and already in the same year he prepared the publication of the Syriac text of the manuscript. As a result, 40 of Solomon’s 42 odes became known and were introduced into scientific circulation (from 3 to 42, the 1st, 2nd and the first few lines of the 3rd ode were on the initial lost pages of the codex; the 1st, or part 1st ode is known in Coptic from “Pistis Sophia”). Three years after Harris's discovery in April 1912, F. C. Burkitt discovered most of the Odes (17 to 40:20) in a tenth-century manuscript originating from the Monastery of the Syrians in the Nitrian Desert, which, ironically, had been kept in storage for 70 years. British Museum Library (Add. 14538). Finally, in one of the papyri acquired in 1955–56. Martin Bodmer, namely in a Greek manuscript dating from the 3rd century. (P. Bodmer XI) a Greek version of the 11th ode was discovered.

Over the past almost hundred years of studying the Odes of Solomon, scientists have not been able to reach the desired consensus. There is no final decision regarding the original language of Odes (opinions have been expressed in favor of both Greek and Syriac and even Hebrew), or regarding the place (Antioch, Edessa), or regarding the time of creation of this monument (datings range between the 1st century BC R. X. and III century A.D.). All these questions are inextricably linked with the assessment of the author’s personality, which also varies significantly. The author of the Odes was seen either as a Jew, or as an Essene, or as a Judeo-Christian. Noting certain similarities between the Od and Qumran literature, it was suggested that the author of the Od could have been a convert from the Qumranites. Finally, a number of scientists were inclined to the Gnostic origin of Od.

The latter opinion was vigorously criticized by J. H. Charlesworth. While defending the non-Gnostic origin of the Odes, he, in particular, pointed out that the author of the Odes addresses his prayer to God the Creator (7:9–13); can use the concepts “knowledge” and “faith” in parallel (8ff.); almost all odes contain allusions to the books of the Old Testament; the author of Odes does not reveal the dualism characteristic of Gnosticism, etc.

Regarding other issues, the following solutions seem to be the most balanced. Most likely, the Odes were composed at the end of the 1st - beginning of the 2nd century AD. A certain terminological similarity between the Odes of Solomon and the Gospel of John speaks in favor of an early dating: Light, Word, Truth, Path, Source of Life, etc. - all of these are key to of the fourth Gospel, the words are also found in the Odes, but at the same time we will not find a single direct Gospel quotation in the Odes, as well as from the Odes in the Gospel. This observation allowed a number of scientists, including the domestic expert on Syriac literature N.V. Pigulevskaya, to attribute the author of the Odes to the circle of the Apostle John. The original language of Od, according to most scholars, is Syriac. The author is either a converted Jew or a Gentile Christian who has been significantly influenced by Jewish thought.

The history of the creation of the miraculous image

This divine face has a rather interesting history of its composition. In the 16th-17th century, a monk icon painter tried to understand the Orthodox belief and began to study church scripture, which existed both before and after the schism. The monk tried to figure out how to avoid sins and correctly offer a prayer request, and he put so much zeal into this that his mind became clouded.

At the moments when enlightenment came over him, the monk, through a prayer request, called out to the Most Pure Virgin for deliverance from the misfortune. And one day the Mother of God appeared to the monk while saying a prayer service and said: “As you see me, write an image, and offer a prayer before them.”

After this miraculous appearance, the monk immediately set to work, but the vision of the Mother of God appeared and then disappeared again. And at that moment, when the disappearance of the Virgin Mary occurred, madness descended on the monk again, and then from his lips the prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos for Increase of Mind sounded again and again, after which she again appeared to him. When the divine image was completed, the monk was able to fully regain his reason, and the image itself became miraculous.

Public and private prayers
