General information and text of the akathist to St. Mary of Egypt

Prodigal life and repentance of Mary of Egypt

Mary of Egypt was born in the mid-5th century in Egypt. When she was 12 years old, Mary left home and became a harlot, she left her parents and went to Alexandria, where she became a harlot.

12

at that age Mary left her parents' home and became a harlot

This is how she spent seventeen years of her life, until one day she met pilgrims heading to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Having joined them out of sinful motives, Mary arrived in Jerusalem. Mary tried to enter the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, but she was not able to cross the threshold, since some force did not let her in.

Then Mary, realizing her fall and the sin in which she lived, began to pray before the icon of the Mother of God in the vestibule of the temple. Only after this did she manage to enter the temple and venerate the Life-Giving Cross.

Leaving, Mary again turned to the Mother of God in prayer and suddenly heard a voice that said to her:

“If you cross the Jordan, you will find blessed peace.”

47

Maria spent so many years in the desert all alone

Having received the sacrament, Mary crossed the Jordan and settled in the desert in complete solitude, where she spent 47 years. For the first 17 years, Mary was haunted by memories of sin and the prodigal passions in which she lived.

“When I started eating, I dreamed of the meat and wine that I ate in Egypt; I wanted to drink my favorite wine. While in the world, I drank a lot of wine, but here I had no water; I was exhausted from thirst and suffered terribly.

Sometimes I had a very embarrassing desire to sing the prodigal songs to which I was accustomed. Then I shed tears, beat myself on the chest and remembered the vows I made when leaving for the desert.”

The only person who saw Mary in the desert was the hieromonk of the Jordan monastery Zosima.

Hieromonk Zosima and Saint Mary of Egypt. Zosima was the only person who met Mary in the desert

First meeting with Zosima: the wonderful quotation of Scripture by Mary of Egypt

Once upon a time, the hieromonk of the Jordan monastery Zosima retired to the desert during Lent. Having met Maria, Zosima gave her part of his himation so that she could cover her nakedness.

During prayer, the saint quoted Scripture by heart, which delighted Zosima and filled him with reverence. The hieromonk asked Maria to tell about her life. Having told the story, she asked Zosima to return a year later and give her communion. Mary asked the monk not to cross the Jordan, but to wait on the other side.

Second meeting. Holy Communion

A year later, Zosimas came to the Jordan on Maundy Thursday. Seeing Mary on the other side, the monk thought for a long time how she could cross the river without a boat.

To the surprise of Zosima, the Monk Mary walked on the water as if on dry land.

Zosima gave communion to Mary. After communion, she asked him to come a year later to their first meeting. Having said goodbye, the saint went back into the desert, again crossing the Jordan on the water.

Third meeting. Death and funeral of Mary

Zosima, as Maria asked, a year later came to the first place of their meeting. Arriving, the monk saw the lifeless body of the saint. Her last request was written in the sand next to the body:

“Bury, Abba Zosima, in this place the body of the humble Mary, give ashes to ashes.”

Zosima realized that after communion, Mary was miraculously transported to this place, to which he walked for 20 days, and died.

Unable to dig a grave, the monk saw a lion next to the body. Then Zosima said to him:

“The great ascetic ordered me to bury her body, but I am old and cannot dig graves; <...> Dig a grave with your claws, and I will bury her body as a saint.”

Leo listened to Zosima and dug a grave for the saint. So the body of Mary of Egypt, who retired 47 years ago into the desert, was buried in the sands.

Returning to the monastery, Zosima told the story of the saint to other monks. The legend about the Venerable Mary was transmitted orally until the 7th century, when it was written down by Sophronius of Jerusalem.

What do they pray to Saint Mary for?

The prayer of Mary of Egypt for help helps the lost to overcome prodigal passions and remain in a sense of repentance.

The icon of the saint helps to cope with the vice of fornication and adultery, take the path of a righteous life, and get rid of any addictions, be it addiction to alcohol or nicotine.

Troparion of Mary of Egypt

Troparion, tone 8

In you, mother, it is known that the hedgehog was saved in the image,

Having accepted the cross, you followed Christ,

And in action you taught to despise the flesh, for it passes away,

Be diligent, O souls, things more immortal. In the same way, the Angels also rejoice, O Reverend Mary, Your spirit.

Chosen by God from a fallen race to achieve great glory in heaven through a difficult feat, we, earth-born, humbly cry out to you, holy Mary, pray to the Lord God for us, may he snatch us from the pit of passions, praiseworthy to you who sing: Rejoice, Venerable Mother Mary, who surprised the Angels with her feat .

Ikos 1

The angels were amazed at the sudden change in you, Reverend Mother, how in one hour you left the wide path leading to destruction and entered on the narrow path of salvation. Receive from us, Christ's Lady, this joyful singing: Rejoice, O Mother of God who prayed that she would be worthy to fall at the Cross; Rejoice, you who asked the pure Virgin to ask for forgiveness from Christ. Rejoice, O Virgin of Holies who promised not to return to the destructive path; Rejoice, you who poured bitter tears onto your sick, venerable breast. Rejoice, for you were soon heard in prayer by the Intercessor; Rejoice, for at that same hour you could freely approach the Cross. Rejoice, thou who tenderly kissed the tree on which Christ was crucified; Rejoice, you who trembled with your whole being and shed streams of tears. Rejoice, you who immediately made the decision not to go back; Rejoice, you who have chosen to take for yourself the yoke of Christ and His burden. Rejoice, with this firm decision you have struck Satan at the head; Rejoice, for because of one decision there was great joy in heaven. Rejoice, Venerable Mother Mary, who surprised the Angels with your feat.

Kontakion 2

Seeing the inexpressible love of the Mother of God for you, Venerable One, as if through your tearful prayer, create at that same hour your unrestricted entrance to the Most Pure Tree of the Cross on the feast of its honorable erection, and grant you the honor to kiss it, while you, in joyful awe of God’s mercy, sang to Him: Alleluia .

Ikos 2

With your mind and heart, Saint Mary, you accepted the unwavering decision from now on not to return to the path of passions, in the tenderness of your heart you prayed to the Most Holy Virgin Theotokos to show you the place of salvation and suddenly you heard a mysterious voice indicating the Jordanian desert as such a place. Receive from us, Venerable One, this praise: Rejoice, you who thanked the Intercessor of the World for the unrestricted entrance to the Cross; Rejoice, you who have chosen the Virgin to serve only Christ as your assistant. Rejoice, thou who prayed to the pure Virgin for salvation to show thee the way; Rejoice, having chosen the desert from the icon as a place of achievement. Rejoice, thou who at that hour renounced the vanity of this world; Rejoice, you immediately set sail on the boat on that side of the Jordan. Rejoice, in the desert lands you are protected by the Mother of God; Rejoice, invisible to the sinful world, having escaped its vanity. Rejoice, for you who repelled the slander of the devil with the Cross; Rejoice, chosen by the toiler, who rejoiced with Christ. Rejoice, you who endured fear and famine for His sake; Rejoice, you who despised the charms of the world for the sake of the One Christ. Rejoice, Venerable Mother Mary, who surprised the Angels with her feat.

Kontakion 3

Strengthened by the power from above, you remained in the desert, Reverend Mother, protected by the help of the Lord, chanting to Him: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Having truly the great desire of the Venerable Zosima to see God's chosen one, who surpassed him in the height of her life, when the days of the Holy Pentecost arrived, she departed into the desert beyond the Jordan and, by the will of God, found you, Reverend, you, for the sake of humility, not wanting to appear to people, first fled from him , then I begged the venerable monk to honor him with a conversation with you, do not disdain our humble conversation, O saint of God, but accept the praise of the monk: Rejoice, you who brought repentance in the desert; Rejoice, you who wept in it day and night. Rejoice, you who have watered the whole earth with tears; Rejoice, you who have reached heavenly heights. Rejoice, you who fled from the stench of life; Rejoice, you who have flown into the desert peace. Rejoice, you who suffered under the burden of the cross; Rejoice, for the Lord is always with you. Rejoice, exalted by Christ for your deeds; Rejoice, glorified while still on earth. Rejoice, you have been distinguished by the Lord’s insight; Rejoice, for you called Zosima by name. Rejoice, Venerable Mother Mary, who surprised the Angels with your feat.

Kontakion 4

The Monk Zosima was soon seized by a storm of sacred horror, as if you had never known him by name, beg him to tell him your wondrous life. But you, humble servant, did not hide your former sinful life before him, so that the Lord, who generously rewards the repentant, may be glorified in you: We thank the Creator, praying to Him that He will not reject our repentance, and in joyful hope we sing to Him: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

Reverend Zosima heard how you with courage endured all the hardships of desert life in the fight against temptations and the devil, and was surprised and called out to you with tenderness: Rejoice, who in the desert only nourished your body with roots; Rejoice, you who placed all your sorrow on the Lord, so that your creation may not forsake you. Rejoice, you who surpassed many others in your struggle; Rejoice, for this reason you have ascended to heaven and are crowned with a bright crown. Rejoice, you were taught the Scriptures by the Spirit of God in the desert; Rejoice, the All-Blessed Ones have been given the gifts of holy beauty. Ikos 5

Seeing you, Zosima, the Venerable One, standing in the air and praying, she was overcome with trepidation, quickly wondering how, in the fall of a man who had been before, she was honored with the capital of grace, tenderly thanking the Lord and singing to her: Rejoice, having achieved the gift of foresight through the holiness of life; Rejoice, you who revealed the monastic secrets to Zosima with your lips. Rejoice, you have become like an Angel in the brilliance of your purity; Rejoice, for the blessed one has been vouchsafed to stand in the air. Rejoice, you hid your strict deeds before Zosima; Rejoice, you have hidden many phenomena from heaven. Rejoice, for the sake of holy salvation you kept only in your heart; Rejoice, you who commanded Zosima to remain silent about herself until your death. Rejoice, you who did not desire to be glorified on earth by men; Rejoice, for forty-seven years you remained unknown in a desert life. Rejoice, you also want to depart from the path of the cross, unknown to everyone; Rejoice, Venerable Mother Mary, who surprised the Angels with your feat.

Angels in heaven are preaching your wonderful life, blessed desert woman, how in a weak body you acquired great strength of spirit and crushed the wiles of Satan. We, together with the Angels, glorify the Lord, who has given you strength by His grace, and sing to Him: Alleluia.

A great thirst for tasting the Most Pure Mysteries of Christ has arisen in you, God's Pleasant, asking Zosima to appear next summer, on the day of Holy Maundy Thursday, with the Holy Gifts on the bank of the Jordan River, so that you may be worthy of this most holy Gift. We, glorifying in you the zeal of the closest union with our Lord Jesus Christ, laudably call you: Rejoice, tormented by a holy thirst for communion for the sake of the Holy Gifts; Rejoice, in your heart there is love for the Lord God. Rejoice, you left joy and tenderness in the heart of Zosima; Rejoice, you have directed the mind of this old man into a stream of reflection. Rejoice, as if he carried away the thought of you like a precious pearl; Rejoice, for the entire path to the monastery is wet with joyful tears. Rejoice, for for a long time your wonderful image stood in the eyes of his old man; Rejoice, for only through the summer the old man consoled himself with a date. Rejoice, Venerable Mother Mary, who surprised the Angels with your feat.

Kontakion 7

Wanting to observe the rules of the holy monastery, the abbot sent his monks away to the feat of silence and naive prayer in the distant desert. The Venerable Zosima was unable to go away for the sake of illness, which you, Saint Mary, predicted for him, with joyful trepidation awaiting Maundy Thursday, on the same day for the sake of it, promising to receive communion, bowing before the incomprehensible destinies of God, hastening to God: Alleluia.

Rejoice, for in the radiance of the moon you appeared in the distance; Rejoice, walking with your feet to the opposite bank of the river. Rejoice, you overshadowed the Jordan with your hand with the sign of the cross; Rejoice, for you walked like a river on dry land without any embarrassment. Rejoice, for for the sake of this vision the Priest was in fear; Rejoice, for you calmed him with your holy speech. Rejoice, Venerable Mother Mary, who surprised the Angels with your feat.

For such help from the Lord, you sang to Him: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

It is impossible to depict the florid language that was created in the soul of the righteous Zosima after your departure, mystical hermit, you, with your image, filled with the grace of the All-Holy Spirit, fixed the spiritual gaze of the elder on the heavenly thoughts, how God of the ringed man with His omnipotence raised to the Angelic heights, accept together with Zosima’s humble praise of us: Rejoice, you who have preserved your mind in it, not dissipated by the temptation of passions; Rejoice, for you were burdened by the meeting with earthly people.
