John the Theologian is one of the 12 apostles and the favorite of Christ, as well as his relative on the maternal side. The holy apostle became famous for writing the fourth Gospel of the New Testament, three epistles and the book of Revelation. A strong prayer to the holy Apostle John the Theologian sounds in Orthodox cathedrals three times a year:
- May 21st,
- June 3,
- October 9.
John the Theologian
John was born into a wealthy family of Salome and Zebedee, engaged in fishing. In his youth, he helped his father, then Christ called him to become a disciple. Since then, John devoted his life to serving God and spreading Christianity.
When many of Christ's disciples were dismayed after Christ's arrest, only John alone accompanied him to his execution and witnessed the crucifixion with the other women Solome and the Mother of God. It was John who Christ entrusted with the care of his mother, and he fulfilled the request and was with her until her death.
After the resurrection of Christ he became one of the apostles. The personality of the Savior became an example for John, and he devoted his life to serving the Lord until his last days.
The saint carried the words of God in his sermons with love, which he considered the main commandment. Therefore, John the Theologian was called the messenger of love, and Christ called John “the son of thunder” for his emotional character.
John was an observant and receptive person, had compassion for people's grief and never refused help, forgave offenders and prayed for their salvation. He cast out demons and healed the sick.
The miracles that happened to John the Theologian forced people to believe in his holiness. During the reign of Emperor Nero and mass persecution of Orthodox people, John was arrested and sentenced to death. He drank the poison and remained alive; it was not possible to cook it in boiling oil. Then he was exiled to the island of Patmos in Greece, where he converted many people to the Orthodox faith.

He remained alive when he was sent on a ship as a preacher to Asia Minor. The ship was holed during a storm and sank. John disappeared, but did not die. God gave him life. For fourteen days he was in sea waters. His body was discovered by the disciple Prochorus while walking along the shore to Ephesus.
He was beaten, stoned and declared a slave. But he, like a phoenix, a symbol of immortal inspiration, rose from the ashes and shone with great love.
It is well known that he lived for more than a hundred years. This is the only apostle who died a natural death. Before the premonition of his imminent death, John asked his followers to be buried alive. When the burial site was later discovered, there were no bodies or remains, only the place began to emit a subtle and delicate aroma. When the end of the world comes, John the Theologian will appear on earth in the flesh with sermons. After all, his body disappeared after the funeral on the third day, and his remains were never found.
John the Theologian: teachings of the holy apostle
John had the privilege of witnessing the Transfiguration of Jesus on Mount Tabor (Matthew 17:1-6). Before his death, the Savior entrusted his mother (the Virgin Mary) to the care of John (John 19:27). According to legend, she lived with John in Ephesus until her Assumption in Jerusalem. After the Dormition of Mary, John began his missionary expeditions throughout Asia Minor.
He was then exiled to the island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea. On this island John received personal revelations that formed the Book of Revelation, or Apocalypse, the last book of the New Testament and the Christian Bible. He received these revelations in a cave located under the present monastery dedicated to his honor. John later went to Ephesus, where, inspired by the Holy Spirit, he wrote the Gospel of John and the three letters of John with the help of his devoted friends.
Compared to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, the Gospel of John is much more theological and philosophical. He writes for a Christian audience and gives more meaning in some areas, such as the Holy Eucharist (John 6). He taught that everyone should be treated with love, forgive everyone and humbly follow the Lord. "God is love. You can know true divine love only through faith in Him. God’s grace will help with this,” said the apostle.

His symbol as an evangelist is the eagle, because he opens his Gospel with the sublime ideas of pre-existence: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” His symbol as an Apostle is a cup with a serpent, representing a failed attempt to poison him.
John is the only apostle who did not suffer martyrdom. He lived to the age of 90 and died of natural causes, probably at Ephesus in what is now Turkey.

What do they pray for in the Jerusalem Temple?
“The Lord does not impose himself by force. Today we talk a lot about history without knowing anything about it. Because today the wailing wall for the Jews is witnessing. But when we look, this is the western wall of the Jerusalem Temple. We see and read that this was a place for prayer for proselytes, that is, people who are just coming to faith. Today Jews pray at our wall of the Jerusalem Temple. Because all holy events took place only in the Jerusalem temple - this is the introduction of the Most Holy Theotokos into the temple, the Circumcision of the Lord, the preaching of the Savior and the expulsion of the merchants, this is the life of the Mother of God... Thus, the Jews affirm the true truth for Christians, that this is our temple. And they, like proselytes, who do not know the truth, today come to this wall in order to see the One from whom they abandoned - Christ,” the Metropolitan said.
It should be noted that the Apostle John is one of three theologians whom the whole world knows. The Apostle John, Simeon the New Theologian and Gregory the Theologian are three people who truly had the gift of seeing wisdom and being called Theologians.
