This is one of the most famous prayers that are sung in all Russian churches. This is because the Kazan Mother of God has been considered the Patroness and Intercessor of the Russian land for many centuries. The history of this unique icon began in an unusual way. In the 16th century, the Queen of Heaven came to one little girl Matrona in a dream and told her where the miraculous image was.

When the girl woke up, she told her parents everything. But the parents were not used to believing in fairy tales, so they considered the dream a child’s fantasy. However, the Mother of God appeared again and again until the parents obeyed. At the place indicated by the girl, they found an ancient icon, which soon received the name Kazan.

Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

When is the akathist to the Kazan Mother of God read? In Russian Orthodoxy, “Kazan” is one of the most widespread and revered icons of the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. It is inspired by the ancient image of the Virgin Mary "Hodegetria" ("Guide"). However, “Kazan” has so many variants that it is often considered as an independent type of Russian Mother of God iconography.

Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

The Virgin Mary in the icon is depicted frontally up to the shoulders, with the Infant of God standing in her left hand. It is presented from the front to the waist, so the hands of the Mother of God, as a rule, are not visible. Jesus' left hand is also hidden under the robe. The right one is raised in a blessing gesture. The Mother's head is slightly inclined towards the Son, but their gaze is directed directly at the viewer. However, some versions of the Kazan image represent the Virgin Mary looking a little to the side. Icons may also differ in the color of the background and the robes of Mary and the Infant God.

In what life situations is the akathist read at the image of the Kazan Mother of God?

Remembrance days are considered July 13/21 and October 22/November 4. On these dates there is always a healthy solemn service in Orthodox churches. However, the Kazan Mother of God, regardless of the dates, helps people with various ailments and in difficult life situations. The akathist before the icon of the Kazan Mother of God is read in the following cases:

  • quarrels, disagreements in the family;
  • anxiety and depression, mental wounds;
  • chronic or severe illnesses (especially eye diseases and blindness);
  • poverty and lack of money, requiring urgent financial assistance;
  • as a powerful protection against evil spirits and magical influence;
  • as protection from foreign invaders;
  • inability to find a couple, other half;
  • when young people marry, for its strength and inviolability of the union.

Women who find themselves in need or in an unhappy marriage, who have been subjected to violence, often turn to the icon of the Kazan Mother of God and receive help and salvation.

Finding of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

The origin of the icon is unknown. Its original, probably written by a certain ancient Russian monk, was lost for a long time. The miraculous discovery of the holy image took place in 1579 in Kazan. This happened after a large-scale fire that destroyed a significant part of the city. The young daughter of one of the residents saw the Mother of God three times in a dream, indicating the location of the lost shrine.

The icon turned out to be hidden in the ground. She was found and solemnly, with a prayer service and procession, she was transferred to the Annunciation Cathedral. During this event, two people were healed of blindness. A list (copy) of the icon, as well as a story about its discovery and miracles, was sent to Tsar Ivan the Terrible in Moscow. The Russian Church celebrates the discovery of the Kazan image of the Mother of God on July 21. On this day, Orthodox Christians most often read the Akathist to the Kazan Icon.

Kazan Icon of the Mother of God: history and veneration

For several decades, the icon was venerated only at the local level. At the end of the 16th century, Kazan Metropolitan Hermogenes, the future Patriarch of Moscow, collected numerous testimonies of her miracles. This is mainly the healing of the sick.

At the beginning of the 17th century, during the Polish-Lithuanian intervention, Patriarch Hermogenes blessed the people's militia with a list of the miraculous Kazan image of the Mother of God to liberate Moscow from the enemy. In the fall of 1612, the capital was liberated. This event served to establish a special day of celebration in honor of the icon - November 4. In the mid-17th century, her veneration became nationwide.

A richly decorated original of the Kazan image of the Virgin Mary was stolen from the Bogoroditsky Monastery in the early 20th century. The thieves were arrested, but the icon could not be saved. Probably, the attackers destroyed the shrine, having first removed the jewelry from it.

Today there is a list of the Kazan Icon in almost every church of the Moscow Patriarchate. In honor of this image of the Mother of God, many churches and monasteries were erected. Since 2011, a copy of the icon has been stored on the International Space Station. The most revered Kazan icons today are the St. Petersburg list (sent to Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century) and the Moscow list (which took part in the liberation of Moscow from the Poles). The first was transported from Moscow to St. Petersburg under Peter I and is now kept in the local Kazan Cathedral. The second is located in the Epiphany Patriarchal Cathedral of the capital.

What is an akathist?

Akathist is a genre of Orthodox church chants. A work of this genre can be dedicated to the Lord, the Mother of God, a saint, a Christian holiday, or an icon of the Mother of God. Akathists have a solemn, laudatory and grateful character. These chants mention significant events in the life of the sacred person, her spiritual exploits:

“The Akathist expresses a dogmatic and poetic contemplation of a miracle, which explains its static nature; it is, as it were, a verbal icon of a sacred person or a blessed event” (Theological-Liturgical Dictionary).

The word “akathist” is of Greek origin and is translated as “unsaddled.” That is, this is a prayer that is read and listened to while standing. The first akathist was written in honor of the Mother of God in the 6th century. Its author is considered to be Saint Roman the Sweet Singer. Subsequent akathists were compiled following the example of this work. All of them are built according to the same scheme. These are 25 songs, 13 of which are kontakia and 12 are ikos. The first are small beginnings to the ikos, and the second are voluminous songs that develop the theme indicated in the kontakia.

Most of the akathist consists of praises (hairetisms) of the sacred person, contained in ikos (12 in each). All Hayretisms begin with a direct address to the righteous with the word “Rejoice.” In Church Slavonic, it does not mean a call to joy, but a greeting. All kontakia, with the exception of the first, end with the exclamation “Alleluia” (translated from Hebrew as “Praise God”).

When is the akathist to the Kazan Mother of God read?

The Akathist to the Kazan Mother of God is read to praise Her joyfully or to express a plea for help. This can be any good request of a spiritual or everyday nature. Traditionally, before the Kazan Icon, Orthodox Christians ask the Mother of God for healing from illnesses, for a prosperous marriage, for the birth of a child, for the health of children, as well as for consolation in difficult periods of life.

“Like a song imbued with the spirit of cheerfulness and joy, the akathist is attractive to every prayer-minded soul... In each akathist... there are several strong expressions that poured out from the depths of the author’s heart, and they, like a ray of grace, will sink into the depths of the hearts of those praying, especially those thirsting for encouragement and consolation.” (from the book “Orthodox Russian Akathists”)

Let us give an example of the Mother of God’s help through prayer in front of Her Kazan image. An anonymous Christian woman says that in the second month of pregnancy, doctors told her terrible news: the fetus stopped moving and its heartbeat stopped. To avoid the death of the mother, it was necessary to cleanse the uterus as soon as possible.

After the procedure, the depressed girl lay in the ward and talked on the phone with her husband. He said that on that day the discovery of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, revered in their family, was celebrated. The man said that he prayed for his wife at the liturgy and promised to read the holiday akathist.

Before discharge, the woman needed to be examined again. It showed that the fetus was still in the womb. And most importantly, he is alive. Doctors had never encountered anything like this and came to the conclusion that the child had hidden himself in a muscle. The couple immediately realized who had revived and “hid” their child. They firmly decided to give birth to a child, despite doctors’ warnings about his possible disability.

Mother and father believed in a miracle, continuing their fervent prayer to the Virgin Mary. Relatives from Kazan ordered a magpie for them from one of the churches, and also sent the couple the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. After 9 months, the woman safely gave birth to a girl, who turned out to be the healthiest in the entire maternity hospital.

How to read the akathist correctly

It is necessary to pray when the soul asks for it. This can happen at any time, but priests recommend reading the akathist in the morning, early in the day, when your head is clear and you are not overloaded with everyday problems.

Only sick people can sit while praising. The rest of the akathist is read standing, in front of the icon. If there is no image of the Kazan Mother of God, then you can read the akathist in the church or by facing the east.

Before reading the akathist, initial prayers are said (morning and evening rules). For example, such a prayer could be “Our Father.”

When and why to read the Akathist to the Kazan Icon

The image of this Virgin Mary is classified as Hodegetria (iconographic style). Translated into Russian it means “guidebook”. The miraculous image has been used for a long time:

  • during family quarrels;
  • for serious illnesses;
  • with mental anguish or pain;
  • to improve financial situation;
  • for protection from evil spirits;
  • to help you find your other half;
  • when young people get married (it is believed that such a marriage will be strong).

Women often turn to the icon in cases of family problems and quarrels. It is believed that the Heavenly Queen always helps in this case. You can listen or read the akathist at any time of the day. But it is still recommended to read this prayer book in the morning, when your head is not occupied with earthly problems.

Also, you cannot read chants during Lent. But if it is really necessary, then you must take permission from the clergy.
