Hear me, Lord, in Your righteousness!


Lord, hear me in Thy righteousness and do not enter into judgment with Thy servant, for no one living will be justified before You (Ps 142:1-2) - anyone who has listened to the prayer at the Six Psalms is familiar with these words, which constantly attract attention. and are drawn into thinking about why no one is able to justify themselves before God? And with all this, for what reason should the Lord hear a person in His truth and therefore not enter into court with him? What is the truth? The answer is seen in the event that the Church remembered on Good Friday, and lies in the Cross of our Redeemer - Jesus Christ.

“What ransom will a man give for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26). No. The entire experience of human life on earth gives a clear idea that man without God is weak and unimportant; he is a servant of his ambitions, which are not distinguished by nobility or righteousness, and simply put, man is a slave of sin. There is no business that a person has in which evil is not mixed in, and in every evil the head of everything is pride: “the beginning of sin is pride” (Sir 10:15). Pride reduced man to a tragic state, blinded him with arrogance and self-love, made him submissive to sensual pleasures, and organized the fundamental principle of life for all people who were ever born after the fall of their ancestors, which lies in the dominance of sin. For this reason, a person is born in a sinful state, broken, corrupted, prone to evil: “we all once lived according to our fleshly lusts, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and the mind” (Eph 2:3). The vector of the forces of the soul was disrupted: the person began to think falsely, the imagination was distorted, the memory weakened, the will acquired zeal more for passions than for virtues. And all this against the background of why, in fact, God created this world and man.

God gave man the ability to grow in spirit, to express love for his Creator in his deeds, to be established in holiness, to be righteous before God: “God created man upright” (Eccl. 7:29), but an unreasonable mistake turned man into a sufferer and a fool, unable to neither to live in the spirit, nor to have pure love for anything, nor to be sanctified by the grace of God, nor to be righteous in the eyes of God: “all have turned aside, they have become equally indecent; there is none who does good, no, not one” (Ps. 53:4). By virtue of the law of sin, the sons of men could no longer justify themselves before God, because they had nothing in themselves that could save them, lead them into heavenly palaces and free them from the need after death to be the heir of a single sorrowful patrimony for every soul - hell: “I will go away,” says Saint Job, “and will never return, to the land of darkness and the shadow of death, to the land of darkness, which is the darkness of the shadow of death, where there is no order, where it is dark as darkness itself” (Job 10:21 –22). Therefore, the psalmist, not without reason, affirmatively proclaims, appealing to the Lord, that no one living will be justified before Him, and Christ Himself already in the Gospel confirms this truth, that the soul has no ransom that it could give for itself and be free.

So, man turned out to be a sinner, but God is always righteous: “You are righteous, O Lord, and your judgments are just” (Ps 119:137). What was His truth after the Fall? The fact is that the human race, having sinned and consolidated its will in evil, was deprived of the light of divine grace as punishment and was appropriately clothed in corruption and the death that follows corruption. Death became the natural consequence of the law of sin. A person unworthy of Paradise could no longer eat from the fruits of good Life according to the judgment of God: “Behold, Adam became like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he stretch out his hand, and also take from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever. And the Lord God sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he had been taken” (Genesis 3:22-23). “You are dust and to dust you will return” (Genesis 3:19) - how could God hear a person in such truth and deliver him from judgment? But what compels us to boldly, despite the inability of our personal justification before God, to turn to Him with a request to avoid judgment?

“He was wounded for our sins and tormented for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we were healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, every one of us has turned to his own way: and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6-7). This prophecy of Isaiah is worthy of awe, pointing to the great Lamb proclaimed. St. directly spoke about the Savior as a Lamb. John the Baptist, seeing the God-man coming to him: “behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). If the blood of the Old Testament innocent lamb (Exodus 12) saved the people of Israel from Egyptian captivity, who did not have any strength or rights for salvation, then the blood of the New Testament divine Lamb-Christ, innocent and sinless, redeemed them from guilt and punishment, delivered them from sins, freed them. from the dominion of death. If, in the case of the redemption of Israel, a historical prototype was providentially given, then already in the case of the redemption of all mankind on Calvary, the true reality was revealed, predetermined by God from eternity, that is, before the existence of the world: “you were not redeemed with corruptible things, silver or gold, from the vain life handed down to you from fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, predestined before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:18-20). What man could not do for his salvation, the God-man did. God performed the mercy of redemption not for His own sake, but for the sake of us, who for His sake did not persist in goodness, but preferred evil for our own sake.

Only in Christ is man justified before God, and no other means is given: “There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). The Lord Jesus Christ revealed a new truth to the world: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us” (Gal 3:13). God the Father hears us precisely in this truth, which He Himself showed in relation to us, that “he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). This truth delivers the believer from judgment, as the Savior personally testifies: “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life” (John 5:24). And faith in this truth allows those seeking salvation from sin and death to say: “Hear me, Lord, in Thy righteousness, and do not enter into judgment with Thy servant, for no one living will be justified before You .
