Troparion, tone 2

Having loved the heavenly fatherland, / you rejected the vanity of the world, / you also acquired meekness, simplicity and gentleness, / you were jealous of the feat of our Pechersk fathers. / Known for purity and deity To God,/ Reverend Parthenius, Kiev praise,/ pray to Christ God // to save and enlighten souls our.

Kontakion, tone 3

Who will not be surprised at your purity, / virgin and prayerful, / the vessel of the Holy Spirit appeared to you / and with your prayer for peace you shone forth to all. / And now remember us at the Throne of Bo Living // in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Why Pray Daily

Every person, waking up in the morning, performs certain actions. As a rule, people wash themselves, drink tea or coffee, have breakfast, and get dressed. This is a list of what most people do when getting ready for work. These actions prepare the human body for the daily worries and performance of any duties.

Prayer is also preparation for the coming day, but only for the soul. Prayer tunes her for the coming day in the same way that a cup of strong tea or coffee tunes the mind. Prayer gives strength to the soul, just as breakfast gives energy to the body. Therefore, you need to pray, and not only in the morning, but before going to bed.

Sayings

The loss of grace is worse than all losses.

The closer you get to God, the more the enemy will grab hold of you.

You should never follow your thoughts, even if they are good, but test them with time.

We must hand over the higher paths to God Himself through our father and mentor.

Our desires and intentions dissipate like dust. So, of course, we must surrender to the will of our Leader.

Unspeakable benefits come from solitude.

He who has acquired the fear of God has neither sorrow nor joy on earth.

To avoid embarrassment and preserve the spirit of prayer, avoid all kinds of conversations and visits, prefer solitude to everything and think more often about death.

The coming of the Holy Spirit scorches and destroys all passions.

Honor, which comes from people, must be hateful to the soul that seeks salvation and recognizes its weakness.

To achieve perfect purity, have no attachment, even spiritual, to a person, or to a thing; love everyone with perfect love, as yourself, but without partiality, that is, do not desire the presence or vision of your loved one and do not enjoy the thought of him.

Whoever has not achieved the measure of perfection himself and begins to teach others, destroys what he had.

There will be only what the Lord has determined.

Do everything contrary to the desires of the flesh: if you want to lie down more peacefully, force yourself to do the opposite; if you want to lean on your elbows while sitting, refrain; and so on in everything.

You must force yourself and not want to pray and do all good things.

To receive the Holy Spirit it is necessary to wear out the flesh: give the flesh and receive the Spirit.

Every blessed soul is simple, just, merciful, kind, not proud, not malicious, not dignified, not insightful, self-controlled and fearing God.

Evil sticks to us like a contagious disease. If you often deal with a pagan, with a slanderer, with a lover of peace, you yourself will imperceptibly fall into the same vices. And vice versa, often treat yourself with a spiritual husband and a man of prayer - the same virtues will flow into you.

A person is unclean and passionate and his things are infected with passions; don't touch them, don't use them.

You should not tell others about your exploits and prayer rules. Even if it was not out of vanity, the gift that you discovered will be taken away from you.

A monk must live alone, and the other with him is the Lord. The monk loves all people, but is bored with them because they separate him from God.

Without prayer you cannot endure solitude, without solitude you cannot acquire prayers. True prayer is that which has grown into the soul and is performed by the spirit.

No one returned to their cell the same way they left it.

Saints are overcome by sorrows.

It’s good with God everywhere, but without Him it’s very boring both in heaven and in hell.

Reading the Psalter tames passions, and reading the Gospel burns the thorns of our sins, for the word of God “is a consuming fire.” Once, for forty days, I was reading the Gospel about the salvation of one soul who had done good to me, and then I saw in a dream a field covered with thorns. Suddenly fire falls from heaven, the thorns that covered the field are burned up, and the field remains clean. Perplexed about this vision, I hear a voice: “The thorns that covered the field are the sins of the soul that did you good; the fire that burned him is the word of God, what you have given her for her.”

Read the Passionate Gospels when the opportunity arises, especially in times of sorrow.

Silence collects, but verbosity scatters.

May God's blessing be upon you, my spiritual child, the protection of our undoubted hope of the Mother of God and the help of the miracle workers of Pechersk.

Instructions

It is extremely dangerous to follow your own thoughts and reasoning in the matter of salvation.
Our mind is a limited eye of the flesh, which can only see and distribute external and material affairs; and we must commit the higher paths to God Himself through our Father and Mentor and follow his reasoning in everything. Our human will is only to wish good and seek means for it, and the doer and doer of all good is God, and evil comes from us.

Beware of judging your neighbor, and in order not to fall into this temptation of the tongue, do not look closely at the actions of others.

Man, with all his efforts, without the assistance of God, cannot control either his outer life or the state of his soul. Without God - not to the threshold.

Love of poverty and lack of possessions prepare great treasures for the soul.

Inexpressible benefits come from solitude, but prayer must be inseparable from it.

Anger, vanity or arrogance and condemnation of one's neighbor drives away the grace of the Holy Spirit.

Physical and mental purity can only be achieved through prayer and the aspiration of the mind towards God; the coming of the Holy Spirit scorches and destroys all passions.

Keeping your body clean must be accompanied by keeping your mind clean.

The childhood years of Hieroschemamonk Parthenius

Pyotr Ivanovich Krasnopevtsev was born (that’s what, according to the metric, the clergyman was called in the world) in the village of Simonovo. This happened on August 24, 1790. This date is speculative, since clergy could not find documents on this matter. This is due to the fact that most of the archives were damaged at the beginning of the last century during the looting of temples, churches, monasteries and seminaries by the revolutionary authorities. However, archivists and church historians believe that the outstanding Orthodox ascetic was born no later than 1793 and no earlier than 1790. This time period was calculated based on the years of study of the future saint in the seminary.

The family into which the future hieroschemamonk Parthenius was born was not wealthy. However, these people were pious, devout and hardworking. According to the written works of Evgeniy Poselyanin, a publicist and writer, the author of biographies of many spiritual Orthodox figures of the century before last, Pyotr Ivanovich was given a vision from above in his adolescence, which not only predetermined his fate, but also influenced the choice of his older brother Vasily. He also became a monk, but was not as respected, famous, or loved as his younger brother. Vasily Ivanovich did not leave behind philosophical books or prayer collections, and very little is known about his service to the Lord.

Who was this man

Hieroschemamonk Parthenius of Kiev lived in the century before last and was one of the most prominent spiritual figures of his time. He was an Orthodox ascetic, a man of deep piety and a logical mind. Parthenius of Kiev, in his written works, not only left texts for prayers for believers, but also discussions on various life issues.

Parthenius was respected not only among believers. The clergy also listened to his opinion on various issues. However, this clergyman was canonized not so long ago. He was considered a saint only in 1994. Parthenius was canonized as a saint, and the day of honoring his memory in Orthodox churches is March 25, the date of his death.

Scheming

Five years later, the ascetic accepted the schema. He had a large and varied cell rule, including prayers to Jesus Christ, the Mother of God, the Psalter and the Gospel. He often wondered whether he was following the goal of the schematic feat correctly. By asking the saints, Father Parthenius was granted grace-filled visits, during which he was strengthened in his desire by the words of the saints.

In the warm season, Parthenius often spent a long time in Goloseevo and loved to go into the forest for solitary prayer. The flow of visitors to him did not dry up, wanting to talk with the ascetic. Striving for solitude, the elder thought to stop this communication, but in a dream he saw how his spiritual children were driving away a ferocious beast from him with sticks, and abandoned this plan.

Many of those who met Father Parthenius noted his unusually pure and soulful gaze, simplicity and insight.

In his old age, the monk lived in the guardian cells of the Near Caves. Every year it became more and more difficult for him to go down to the church of St. Anthony to celebrate the Liturgy, so a church was organized for him in the guardian’s cells themselves. Since the ascetic was preparing to depart from the earthly world, the temple was called Sretensky.

The saint's life was cut short on March 25, 1855. He quietly surrendered his soul to the Lord and was buried in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Life-Giving Source” in Goloseevo.

Daily prayer to St. Philareta

Lord: I don’t know what to ask of You? You alone know what I need. You love me more than I know how to love myself.

Father! Give to Your servant - what I myself cannot ask for. I don’t dare ask - no cross, no consolation! Only I stand before You; my heart is open.

You see needs that I don’t know. Look! - and do to me according to Your mercy: strike and heal, overthrow and raise me. I am in awe and silent before Your holy will and Your destinies, incomprehensible to me.

I sacrifice myself to You. I surrender to You. I have no desire except the desire to fulfill Your will... Teach me to pray. Pray within me yourself.

Prayer to St. Parthenia of Kyiv

Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God! do not allow vanity, pride, sensuality, negligence, anger to dominate me and snatch me away from Your love. Oh, my Lord, my Creator, all my hope! Do not leave me without a lot in blissful eternity; do it, so that I too will follow Your holy example, I will be submissive to the authorities placed over me; Grant me this purity of spirit, this simplicity of heart which makes us worthy of Your love. To You, O my God! I lift up my soul and my heart, do not allow Your creation to perish, but deliver me from the only and greatest evil - sin. Grant, Lord, that I may endure with the same patience the anxiety and sorrow of my soul with which I joyfully accept the pleasures of my heart. If You want, Lord, you can cleanse and sanctify me. Behold, I hand over myself to Your Grace, asking that you destroy from me everything that is contrary to You and join me to the host of Your chosen ones. God! take away from me the idleness of spirit that destroys time, the vanity of thoughts that interferes with Your presence and distracts my attention in prayer. If, while praying, I turn away from You with my thoughts, then help me, so that this entertainment is not arbitrary, and turning my mind away, let me not turn my heart away from You. I confess to You, my Lord God, all the sins of my iniquity, now and before, committed before You; forgive them for the sake of Your Holy Name, and save my soul, which You have redeemed with Your precious blood. I surrender myself to Your Mercy, I surrender to Your will, do with me according to Your Goodness, and not according to my malice and lawlessness; Teach me, Lord, to arrange my affairs in such a way that they will promote the glorification of Your Holy Name. Have mercy, O Lord, on all Christians, hear the desire of all who cry to You, deliver from all evil, save Your servants: (names), send joy, consolation in sorrows and Your Holy Mercy, Lord! I pray to You especially for those who have offended me in any way, offended me and saddened me, or have done any evil, do not punish them, for my sinner’s sake, but pour out Your Goodness on them, Lord! I pray to You for all those whom I, a sinner, have saddened, offended or tempted, in word, deed, thought, knowledge, and non-knowledge. Lord God! forgive us our sins and mutual insults; Eliminate, Lord, from our hearts all indignation, suspicion, anger, resentment, quarrels and everything that can hinder love and reduce brotherly love. Have mercy, Lord, on those who entrusted me, a sinner, unworthy, to pray for them. Have mercy, Lord, on everyone who asks for Your help. God! make this day the day of your Mercy, give to everyone according to his request, be the Shepherd of the lost, the Leader and Light of the unbelievers, the Teacher of the unwise, the Father of the orphans, the Helper of the oppressed, the Doctor of the sick, the Comforter of the dying and lead us all to the desired end, to You , our refuge and blissful peace. Amen

Life of Saint Boniface the Merciful

The future saint was born in the Tuscan region (Italy) in the 6th century. Since childhood, he was distinguished by a special love for the orphans, the poor and the wretched. If a boy saw that a passerby had no clothes, he would take them off and give them to someone in need. His mother, a poor widow, constantly scolded her son, who often returned home without outer (retinue) or lower (chiton) clothes.

One day, when a woman entered the granary, where a year's supply of bread was stored, she found no grain in it. It turned out that the young man distributed all the supplies to poor people. The mother cried bitterly, and the son, taking pity on her, asked her to leave the granary. Boniface fell to his knees and began to pray to the Lord. A miracle happened - the room was filled with wheat. Having thanked God, the young man called his mother, who, seeing the full granary, calmed down and glorified the Lord. Seeing God's help and the great faith of her son, the mother no longer forbade Boniface to provide all possible assistance to the poor and even began to allocate him funds for alms.

At one time, a fox got into the habit of stealing chickens from the mother of the future bishop. The young man, having learned that his mother was upset, hurried to the church and began to ask the Lord for help. Arriving home, he saw a fox with a live stolen chicken in its mouth. She let the bird go, and she died.

Bonifatius subsequently became a clergyman and was then sent to the city of Ferentin as a bishop. Presbyter Gaudentius, who saw them with his own eyes, testifies to the numerous miracles that occurred through the saint’s prayer.

Upon arrival in the Ferenti diocese, Saint Boniface found it in great poverty. Of the church property, the only source of income was the vineyard, the profit from which went to feed the clergy and the needs of the temple. But the bishop did not lose heart, but thanked the Lord for everything.

One day, a strong hail destroyed all the grapevines with berries so that only a few clusters remained. But when the grapes ripened, the bishop ordered the presbyter Constantius to prepare vessels for wine.

The man was surprised, but carried out the order of the saint. Saint Boniface collected the surviving grape brushes and took them to the winepress. He ordered everyone to leave except the boy, who began to squeeze the juice out of the berries. As soon as the new wine flowed from the winepress, the bishop blessed the brought vessels and soaked them in wine. And then, according to tradition, he ordered to call all the poor to give them wine from the new harvest.

The wine in the vessels increased so much that there was enough for all the people who came. And three days later, having prayed and opened the storehouse, Boniface and presbyter Constantius saw that all the vessels were filled with wine. The saint forbade the presbyter to talk about the miracle that had occurred, avoiding fame.

The bishop used wine to perform good deeds, so for drunkenness a prayer is read to Saint Boniface the Merciful, who never refused to help people in need.

Saint Boniface, despite his high position, was merciful and non-covetous all his life, wisely ruled the diocese and flock, teaching compassion and mercy.

During the life of the saint, through his prayers, the Lord worked miracles: money literally appeared out of thin air, the wine in the vessel that Boniface gave to the wanderers did not run out, the caterpillars that devoured the grapes left the vineyard. He was a saint and had the gift of clairvoyance (predicting the future).

How can you pray

The original text of the daily prayer is very long. It is filled with appeals to the Lord and outdated words that have gone out of use. Many modern collections of prayers offer believers short and understandable versions of this text.

The text of the famous daily prayer of the hieroschemamonk, adapted for today, can be composed independently. But you can also use ready-made options.

Example of adapted text:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God! Do not let vanity, carnal desires, pride and vain worries, laziness and anger take hold of me and distract me from love for You. Our All-Merciful Lord, accept my hope and do not leave me in deeds and worries. Grant purity of heart and thoughts, peace of soul and good morals. Do not leave without a chance on the path to your Kingdom, allow me to show meekness and do good deeds

Do not let me perish in temptations and do not allow me to fall into sin, grant me peace and meekness, attention to my neighbor. Cleanse from sorrows and prevent despondency

Save from troubles and suffering. Do not allow idleness to reach my spirit, help me avoid laziness and other sins. Accept repentance, for there are no sinless people, but there are those who have realized. Grant patience and guide me on the true path, give me reason and do not let me turn away from You. I commend myself to Your mercy and ask for everyone, near and far, acquaintances and strangers. Do not, Lord, leave souls without repentance, do not let those who suffer fall into unbelief from illnesses and other trials. Show the way to you for lost souls and forgive people their sins. Do not allow grumbling, but do not let inquisitiveness become impoverished. Do not allow injustice and troubles on Your land, allow everyone to enter the Kingdom of God, amen.”

When composing your short version of the Parthenia prayer or choosing a ready-made text, you must not forget about its main points - remember not only about requests for yourself, but also talk about giving a chance to show the best human qualities, to perform good and godly deeds.

What is daily prayer about?

Why was the daily prayer of Hieroschemamonk Parthenius of Kyiv compiled and pronounced? This question is asked today by many people who are far from the church traditions of both the past and the present, but who strive for the Lord.

The text of the prayer is very long. It begins with a request to grant purity of thoughts and prevent the dominance of vanity, malice, anger and worldly pettiness in the human soul. After this, the prayer asks God to grant him a place in “blessed eternity,” as well as for purity and simplicity in his thoughts. Further, the prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv pays attention to the request that the Lord give a person the opportunity to be worthy of a place in the Kingdom of God. This is an extremely important point, since few of those involved in the compilation of prayer texts paid attention to the issue of a chance for a person to show his best qualities.

Further, the prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv focuses on the nuances traditional for spiritual texts. The person praying asks the Lord to grant benefits not only to people close to him, but to all humanity as a whole, to protect him from temptation and the fall.

At the end of the prayer, the believer asks God for all the orphaned, unfortunate, wretched and sick, for the dying and suffering, for those uncured by doctors and those who wander in darkness without the mercy of God. The prayer of Hieroschemamonk Parthenius of Kyiv ends with a request for peace for all people and their unity with the Lord.

Biography of Saint Parthenius of Kyiv

The future schema-monk, Venerable Parthenius of Kiev, in ordinary life Pyotr Krasnopevtsev (1790–1855), was born in the Tula province, in the family of an impoverished church employee. Since childhood, the boy was deeply religious and was not accustomed to luxury, having learned the hardships of poverty and deprivation. He found salvation in appeals to the Lord - the prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv was already imbued with sincere love for the works of God.

The young man enters the Tula Theological School, then, following the dictates of his heart, he enters the theological seminary. One day, on his way home, he saw a white dove in the sky, which accompanied him all the way, never flying away from the believing young man. “From that time on, some kind of sweetness and desire for something otherworldly sank into my heart, and I was no longer tempted by anything earthly,” the saint later told witnesses.

Already a student at the theological seminary, Peter went on foot to worship the shrines of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, and, approaching the Lavra Church, he felt an inexplicable joy in his soul, deciding under any pretext to remain a novice in it.

The future saint worked for 12 years on prosphora, not disdaining hard work and stoically enduring all kinds of hardships and difficulties. The daily prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv strengthened his spirit, meekness and gentleness. He took monastic vows, being called Paphnutius, then became the confessor of the Great Lavra Church, memorizing the Psalter and reading the prayer “To the Virgin Mary” up to 300 times a day, since in this action the great meaning of the words of God was revealed to him.

We advise you to study Prayers to Matrona of Moscow before the exam

At the age of 44, Father Paphnutius was appointed confessor of the Lavra. At the age of 46, he was tonsured into the schema, receiving the name Parthenius, praying not only on his lips, but also in his heart.

The Monk Parthenius of Kiev spent his last years in solitude, in a cell near the Near Caves, where a cell church was later built for him. He died on March 25, 1855 on Good Friday, the bright day of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, whom he loved and revered selflessly.

How his service to the Lord began

The vision that visited Hieroschemamonk Parthenius in his adolescence (according to the biography of Evgeniy Poselyanin) consisted of the condescension of the Holy Spirit in the form of a snow-white dove.

This vision was the impetus for Peter Krasnopevtsev to enter the Tula Theological Seminary. Whether he completed the course or not is not known for sure. However, a certain fact is that after the seminary the young priest became a novice at the Kiev Pechersk Lavra.

For twelve years, the future saint carried out obedience in the status of caretaker of the prosphora. Upon completion of this obedience, the future saint again had a vision. This time the Monk Nicodemus the Prosphoran appeared to him. After the vision, novice Pyotr Krasnopevtsev memorized the full text of the Psalter. This happened at the beginning of 1824. In the same year, the novice was tonsured a monk and named Paphnutius. His monasticism under this name lasted more than ten years. In 1834, the future saint became the confessor of the Lavra.

And four years later (in 1838) he accepted the monasticism and acquired the name Parthenius. Philaret was tonsured as a schemanik. He named the newly-made schema-monk in memory of Saint Parthenius of Lampsaki.

Hieroschemamonk Parthenius reposed on Good Friday, March 25, 1855.

What other prayers did Hieroschemamonk Parthenius compose?

It was not only the daily prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv that constituted his legacy. The hieroschemamonk left behind several versions of prayers to the Lord, texts addressing the Mother of God and praising her.

The dying prayers by Parthenius deserve special attention.

In his discussions about worldly life, the hieroschemamonk paid great attention to the development of medicine to the detriment of spirituality. The priest did not deny science and healing, but drew attention to the fact that the body and spirit are one, and in hospitals they forget about this

He emphasized that for those suffering it is important not only to relieve pain and cure physical illness, but also to receive spiritual support. This point is especially important for terminally ill patients.

The Hieroschemamonk complained that doctors only try to relieve the body of pain, but do not think about supporting the spirit. A collection of dying prayers was compiled by a clergyman so that infirm, incurable and simply seriously ill people could support themselves spiritually, not fall into despair and despondency, and not lose faith during physical suffering.

These prayers are not distinguished by long texts. They are extremely short and concise. Of course, you also don’t have to memorize prayers verbatim, but pronounce them in your own words without changing the essence.

Example of adapted text:

“Lord, have mercy on me and comfort me. Wipe off the mortal perspiration and take it into your arms. Open to me the Kingdom of Heaven and grant me strength of spirit on my deathbed. Do not allow weakness and end suffering, amen.”

The importance of such prayers cannot be overestimated. But they are only meant for those who are actually on their deathbeds

Those people who do not feel the approach of death, even if doctors prophesy it, should pray to God for health.

The dying prayer of Hieroschemamonk Parthenius of Kyiv

1. When I, depressed by illness, feel the approaching end of my earthly existence: Lord, have mercy on me.

2. When my poor heart, at its last beats, languishes and languishes in mortal pain: Lord, have mercy on me. 3. When my eyes are watered with tears for the last time at the thought that during my life I have offended You, O God, with my sins: Lord, have mercy on me. 4. When the rapid beating of my heart begins to accelerate the outcome of my soul: Lord, have mercy on me. 5. When the mortal pallor of my face and my cold body strikes my loved ones with fear: Lord, have mercy on me. 6. When my vision is darkened and my voice is cut off, my tongue turns to stone: Lord, have mercy on me. 7. When terrible ghosts and visions begin to drive me to despair of Your mercy: Lord, have mercy on me. 8. When my soul, struck by the memories of my crimes and the fear of Your judgment, becomes exhausted in the fight against the enemies of my salvation, who are trying to drag me into the darkness of torment: Lord, have mercy on me. 9. When the sweat of death drenches me, and the soul with painful suffering moves away from the body: Lord, have mercy on me. 10. When mortal darkness closes all the objects of this world from my dim gaze: Lord, have mercy on me. 11. When all sensation in my body ceases, my veins become numb and my muscles turn to stone: Lord, have mercy on me. 12. When human speech and earthly sounds no longer reach my ears: Lord, have mercy on me. 13. When the soul appears before Your face, O God, in anticipation of Your appointment: Lord, have mercy on me. 14. When I begin to heed the righteous sentence of Your judgment, which determines my eternal fate: Lord, have mercy on me. 15. When the body, abandoned by the soul, becomes the prey of worms and corruption and, finally, my entire composition turns into a handful of dust: Lord, have mercy on me. 16. When the sound of the trumpet awakens everyone at Your second coming and the book of my deeds is opened: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, Your sinful servant (name). In Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit. Amen.

Brief life of the saint

In worldly life the saint's name was Peter. He was born in the Tula province. His family was poor. From childhood, the boy deeply believed in the Lord God. He was distinguished by infantile purity and kindness. He saw his salvation from poverty only in prayers, so he offered them in his free moment.

Even at a young age, while studying at a theological seminary, Peter walked on foot all the way to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. Seeing her, he felt incredible joy. Then he decided that he would remain a novice in it. For more than 10 years he worked in a professional position. He did not refuse hard work, but worked like many other novices. Daily prayer strengthened his faith and gave him strength to work.

After some time, the monk became a monk. Then he was given the name Paphnutius and became the confessor of the Lavra, who memorized the psalter and read prayers up to 300 times a day. Three years later, at the age of 46, he was tonsured into the schema. Before his death, Parthenius lived in solitude. The place of solitude was a nearby cave in the laurel. He died on March 25, 1855, on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Throughout his life, the monk had several visions of the Mother of God and the monk, after which he devoted his life to preaching and spiritual life.

The monk read the gospel throughout his life. He knew it by heart and asked his students to study it and read it as he did every day. The prayer on the Gospel of Parthenius of Kyiv is still read today. The saint not only read, but also wrote prayer requests. In the prayer book you can find daily prayer and more.

He took monastic vows, being called Paphnutius, then became the confessor of the Great Lavra Church, memorizing the Psalter and reading the prayer “To the Virgin Mary” up to 300 times a day, since in this action the great meaning of the words of God was revealed to him.

How Hieroschemamonk Parfeniy himself prayed

The daily prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv began early in the morning and ended after sunset. Of course, the clergyman did not recite just one text throughout the day, but many.

The hieroschemamonk began his morning by reading the works of one of the four evangelists, and he also did the same at lunchtime and before the evening meal. In addition, the daily prayer of Hieroschemamonk Parthenius of Kyiv included the singing of the Psalter.

Every day the clergyman read the texts of akathists to the Mother of God and, of course, to the Savior himself. But the list of prayers of the hieroschemamonk did not end there. The daily prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv included the hymn “Rejoice, Virgin Mary.” This text, according to the biography, was repeated by the hieroschemamonk up to three hundred times.

Worldviews of St. Parthenius of Kyiv

During his life, the Reverend had several visions: of an elder monk, of the Mother of God, of John Chrysostom, which prompted him to devote his life to “prayer for the whole world,” prayer for the purity of the human soul.

The prayer of Hieroschemamonk Parthenius of Kyiv, who lived for many years in a solitary cell with an icon of the “Mother of God” covering the only window, has been carried on tirelessly since then both in the heart of the saint and on his lips. For 17 years, Parthenius performed the Divine Liturgy daily, interrupting his prayers only to communicate with pilgrims who came to the cell with the desire to listen to the prayer of St. Parthenius of Kyiv, as well as his instructions.

Tormented by headaches and living in solitude, he strove to convey to believers thoughts about love for our Lord, humility and kindness, the fight against temptation and vanity: “Love of poverty and lack of possessions store great treasures for the soul.”

When to say prayers to the Bethlehem babies?

It is customary to honor the memory of the Bethlehem infant martyrs, according to Orthodox tradition, on January 11, shortly after the Nativity of Christ. And services dedicated to this tragic event are held on December 29.

How then can we celebrate this sad holiday for Christians and read the text of the prayers to the Bethlehem babies with full awareness and understanding of its sacred meaning? Here the clergy explain that Matthew Levi did not seek to convey to believers the exact number of innocent babies killed, but called for treating the number 14,000 as a symbol of exorbitant cruelty, greed, and lust for power in general, and the figure of the fierce man - the ruler Herod in this story, seems to generalize the whole these qualities of the rulers and many people of that era, and serve as a contrast in comparison with the humility, goodness, generosity of God, who appeared to save humanity from itself and its terrible sins.

The holy relics of the infants killed by order of the ruler Herod are kept in a cave near the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Bethlehem. It is there that pilgrims go who want to venerate these first saints who accepted death for the glory of Christ. Now prayers are offered to the Bethlehem babies for children, by the children themselves, as well as by many believers who want to honor their blessed memory.

Is it necessary to read the prayer verbatim?

The hieroschemamonk himself took up the task of compiling prayer texts due to the incomprehensibility of the existing versions read at services for many believers. That is, the clergyman put simplicity and sincerity above all else in prayer, and not mindless memorization and repetition of what is not entirely clear to a person.

He strove to ensure that the prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv was close to believers, simple and intelligible. When to read the text, we will tell you a little below.

Many decades have passed since the prayer was composed. Although the main themes of the requests with which people turn to the Lord remain unchanged, the form of their expression cannot be the same as during the life of Parthenius. Accordingly, a literal reading of the text of the prayer is not required at all. The prayer of Parthenius of Kyiv can be said in your own words, you just need to remember about the theses that make it up.
