Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Spiritual reading

Peace be with you, dear visitors of the Orthodox website “Family and Faith”!

28 August The Holy Church solemnly celebrates the Theotokos Easter - the twelfth feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

Below we enclose a spiritual reading dedicated to this celebration, consisting of the Troparion, Kontakion and Ikos of the holiday, as well as an interesting story about the miracles occurring in Greece on the day of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Troparion of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary

At Christmas you preserved your virginity, at your dormition you did not abandon the world, the Mother of God, you reposed yourself to the belly, Mother of the Being of the Belly, and through your prayers you delivered our souls from death.

Translation from Church Slavonic:

[At the birth of Christ, You preserved your virginity and did not leave the world after your death, Mother of God: You passed into life as the Mother of Life, and through Your prayers you deliver our souls from death].

Kontakion of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary

In the prayers of the never-sleeping Mother of God and in intercessions, the immutable hope of the coffin and mortification cannot be restrained: just as the Mother of the Belly was placed in the womb of the Ever-Virgin One.

[In the prayers of the never-sleeping Mother of God and in the intercessions, the grave and mortality did not hold back the unshakable hope. For She, as the Mother of Life, was brought to life by the One Who dwelt in Her eternally virgin womb].

Ikos of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary

O city of my thoughts, my Christ, for I dare to sing praises to the Wall of the world, Thy Pure Mother, on the pillar the verb strengthen me and in difficult thoughts intercede for me, for You fulfill the prayers of those who cry and ask with faith. You, therefore, grant me a gifted tongue and an unashamed thought: every gift of radiance is sent from You, O Light-Giver, to dwell in the ever-virgin womb.

[Protect my thoughts, my Savior, / for I dare to sing the Wall of the World, / Your most pure Mother; / on the tower of words give me strength, / and in the palaces of thoughts strengthen me, / for you proclaim, / that with faith you fulfill their requests to those who ask; / You grant me a tongue, / speech and reason impeccable, / for every gift of enlightenment is sent down from You, Giver of light, / dwelling in the eternally virgin womb].

Miracles on the Feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On the day of the Dormition of the Mother of God on the Greek island of Kefalonia, near the miraculous icon of Panagia Fedus, small, small poisonous snakes with black crosses on their heads crawl into the temple from all over the area.

Residents of the village of Markopola claim that in their church there is still the same icon in front of which the nuns then asked for intercession. And what’s surprising is that snakes crawl into the temple on holiday and, enchanted, are drawn to this icon. They are not afraid of people and do not sting them; people, in turn, react just as calmly to the presence of such unusual “parishioners.” Snakes crawl on icons and, without fear, climb onto people’s hands when they hold them out to them.

Poisonous creatures, without fearing anyone, humbly give themselves into people’s hands and do not bite anyone! Kefalonians and visiting tourists hold snakes in their arms and put them on their shoulders without fear. Even small children play with “snakes”. Soon after the end of the festive service, the snakes crawl off their beloved icon of the Mother of God and leave the church. Once they crawl across the road and find themselves in the mountains, they are transformed again. Now, if you approach them, they will immediately hiss and may bite! These phenomena were repeatedly captured in photos and videos by journalists.

On this great holiday, both nature and man seem to unite in order to glorify our Most Holy Lady Theotokos in their prayers and give praise to the Creator for his great blessings to all of us.

The Greek island of Kefalonia is called the island of miracles, and all because events take place on it that can hardly be called ordinary or ordinary.

Every year on this island, on the eve of the feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God, a small earthquake (magnitude 3-4) occurs, and after it, on the very day of the holiday, it rains, which is very rare here at this time of year.

But this is not the main miracle, but its harbinger.

There is a pious tradition here to bring white lilies to the temple on the day of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos, similar to the one with which the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Her. These flowers are placed in the icon case of the Mother of God “Panagia-Krini”, where they remain without water until the feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. And here a wonderful miracle happens: on the dry, heat-cracked stems of lilies, tender white flowers bloom, and this is five months after they were cut. On the day of the Assumption, after the liturgy, a prayer service is served in the church, flowers are blessed and distributed to believers who come to the church that day.

These dry stems of lilies are like our souls, withered from unbelief and doubt. And when a snow-white lily blooms on this stem, as a sign of God’s love and eternal life, it seems to remind us that nothing is impossible for God, and that our soul, mired in sins, can bloom like a lily flower and be illuminated by the grace of God.

Church of All Saints

At Christmas you preserved your virginity, / in the Dormition you did not abandon the world, O Mother of God, / you reposed to the belly, Mother of the Being of the Belly, / and through your prayers you delivered our souls from death.
Troparion of the holiday three times, tone 1 At the Nativity You preserved and continue to preserve virginity / At the Dormition (death) You did not leave the world and never do, O Mother of God, / You passed on to life and are forever alive as the Mother of True Life, / and through Your prayers You deliver from death our souls.

August 28 is the traditional date for the celebration of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Why is the day of the death of the Most Holy Theotokos a joyful and bright holiday of the Orthodox Church? Why do Orthodox Christians not mourn, but rejoice over the tomb of the Mother of God? This article aims to answer these questions.

The extraordinary attitude of the Church towards the death of the Most Holy Theotokos is felt already in the name of the holiday: the death of the Mother of God is compared to a peaceful and calm sleep - the Dormition, which is why it is called the Dormition, and not Death.

At the end of the festive service, the rector of the church, Archpriest Victor, addressed the believers gathered at the holiday with a sermon, in which he answered questions about the essence of the current celebration.

When dying, modern people experience fear of death. At a funeral, a terrible grimace of death distorts the face of not only the deceased, but also of everyone gathered at his coffin.

Thoughts about expensive funerals, separation from loved ones, unfinished business, loss of a beautiful body and wealth poison the already sad last minutes of earthly life for most modern people.

The dying person is also afraid of his death because he guesses about the severe answer for his sins that the Lord will demand from him.

Or he doubts that anything at all can await him beyond the grave.

Has it always been like this? Or could death be different?

It wasn't always like this. Even the ancient pagans firmly believed in an afterlife.

The Celts seriously agreed to repay the debt years after death, the ancient Greeks fearlessly died in battle, hoping for eternal happiness in the halls of the heavenly warrior Athena.

Orthodox Christians believed even more firmly in eternal life.

The martyrs rejoiced as they died, because they knew that they were going to meet the One for Whom they had lived, suffered, and were now accepting their death.

All the more should we rejoice at the death of the Most Holy Theotokos, going to the eternal abode to Her Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

However, the apostles, parting with the Most Pure Mother of God, became despondent and began to mourn. To console them, the Lord showed everyone a vision of how He, surrounded by angels, lifted the soul of His Mother to Heaven.

Every Orthodox Christian can clearly see this episode of the Sacred History of the Church on the holiday icon.

Then the apostles reverently buried the body of the Mother of God.

Why do we mourn, but the saints rejoice when they die?

Another reason is our complete unpreparedness for the hour of death.

And the Most Holy Theotokos prepared Herself in advance with Her sinless life, as all the saints did, following Her example. The Mother of God prayed to her Son to say goodbye to all the close disciples of Christ before her death.

The Lord fulfilled the good desire of His Mother: all the disciples, except the Apostle Thomas, said goodbye to Her.

But it was no coincidence that Saint Apostle Thomas was late to the tomb. At his request, on the third day, the disciples opened the coffin, but the body of the Heavenly Lady was no longer there.

The Holy Church believes that the Lord resurrected His Mother and took Her to Himself into Heaven with her body, just as the Lord Himself ascended on the fortieth day after Easter.

Some holy fathers even talk about the appearance of the resurrected Mother of God to the holy apostles.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the believing people gave the feast of the Assumption the name of the Theotokos Easter.

Like Her Most Holy Son, the Mother of God did not abandon us, as is now sung in church hymns: “In the Assumption you did not forsake the world” (the exact meaning of the phrase translated from the Church Slavonic language “in the Assumption (that is, in Death) you did not abandon and stand you never leave pores).

Therefore, this holiday, beloved by the people, teaches every Orthodox Christian the proper attitude towards death as a long-awaited meeting with Christ, preparation for which should constitute the entire content of human life.

Feast of the Assumption: “The body is from the earth - to the earth and will go, and the soul is from God - to God and will go”

At Christmas you preserved your virginity, at your dormition you did not forsake the world, O Mother of God. On August 28, 2021, the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary was celebrated at the Valaam Monastery. The hegumen of the monastery, His Eminence Bishop Pankratius of Trinity, celebrated the all-night vigil and Divine Liturgy together with the concelebrant brethren.

Decision of the Spiritual Council of the Valaam Monastery: “Provide immediate assistance.” The Spiritual Council of the monastery decided to transfer one million rubles, and in the future, to the best of their ability, participate in financing the work to recreate the temple.
On the eve of the holiday, the fathers of the Spiritual Council decided to help the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God in Kondopoga, dating back to 1774, which had burned to the ground.
It will be rebuilt for the fifth time, but this is not an obstacle to the triumph and strength of Orthodoxy. As is known from the chronicles of the monastery, Valaam was ravaged 14 times, but with God’s help and the intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, it was reborn again and, like a beacon, carried its spiritual light, so that every believer could see the path, “not perish, but have eternal life”
(John. 3:15). The burnt temple was a truly unique work of wooden architecture, and its reconstruction is our moral and spiritual duty, a matter of our conscience. We believe in this initiative and hope that just as we managed to restore the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in our monastery, so this burnt temple will soon shine again on the church horizon of Russia.

The restoration of the Kondopoga Church is, first of all, a test of the spiritual and moral strength of our people. The history of our country is closely connected with the fate of Russian Orthodoxy. The entire Russian culture is based on a spiritual foundation formulated by the philosopher Ivan Aleksandrovich Ilyin, who said that without shrines, “Russia is like a frame without a picture, a cradle without a baby.”

stated Bishop Pankratiy, Abbot of the Valaam Monastery.

At Christmas you preserved your virginity, at your dormition you did not forsake the world, O Mother of God.

All-night vigil on the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God 2018

Today's feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary reminds us of eternal life. The Dormition of the Mother of God shows how our earthly service is connected with what awaits us beyond the threshold of earthly existence. We can often observe a similar death among people who have served their lives for the Lord. They seem to fall asleep peacefully and pass on to God in another world, where angels and saints await them, and where Christ Himself meets them, giving them eternal bliss, joy and joy. They managed to bring repentance in this life, they managed to reconcile with God in this life, they managed to become bearers of Divine love. That love that lifts a person after his departure into another world to the single and main source of all goods - God.

The icon of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos is the only one in Orthodoxy where the Lord Jesus Christ holds in His arms a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes - the most pure soul of the Mother of God, which He Himself came to receive and raise to Heaven. Believing in the immortality of the human soul, we understand that for us this is evidence that there is no death, that death is not death at all, but a bridge to life, “where there is no illness, no sorrow, no sighing, but endless life.” For us, dormition is a return home to Heavenly Father.

A person does not die, he only passes into another, eternal life. The body is from the earth - to the earth and will go, and the soul is from God - to God and will go. And there is already His holy will, who is determined where, according to each person’s deeds, for eternal life. “Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us who trust in Thee.”

(Ps. 32:22),
wrote the Valaam elder schema-abbot John (Alekseev).

God-protected native land!

Speaking about our transition to eternal life, I would like to remember the words of the holy Apostle Paul: “Remember your teachers, who preached the word of God to you, and, considering the end of their lives, imitate their faith” (Heb. 13:7)

. The Mother of God is our Most Holy, Most Pure, Most Blessed and Glorious Lady - our Mentor, our Intercessor, our Savior. Remembering Her Dormition, looking at the end of Her life, we too, to the best of our ability, will imitate and be jealous of Her faith, Her humility, Her love, so that on the day of our departure into eternity we will be worthy of Her help and intercession.

Everything you see - great cathedrals, a wonderful fortress, a huge powerful state of Russia - all this was created by the blessing of God, under the Protection of the Most Pure Queen of Heaven.

We magnify Thee, most immaculate Mother of Christ our God, and glorify Thy Dormition all-gloriously.

How does the icon of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary help and prayers to the Mother of God

Oh, Most Holy Theotokos, Virgin Lady, the highest angel and archangel and the most honorable of all creatures, angelic great surprise, prophetic high sermon, apostolic glorious praise, fair adornment of saints, strong affirmation of martyrs, saving instruction for monks, inexhaustible abstinence for fasters, virgins in purity and glory, mothers quiet joy, infants wisdom and punishment, widows and orphans to nurse, naked clothes, sick in health, deliverance of captives, floating on the sea in silence, overwhelmed by a calm haven, wandering not difficult for a mentor, traveling an easy passage, toiling a good rest, in the troubles of the present intercessor, the offended protection and refuge, hope for those who do not hope, those in need of help, those who are sad, ever-present consolation, those who are hated, loving humility, salvation for sinners and appropriation to God, firm protection for the faithful of all, invincible help and intercession! By You, Lady, we see the Invisible One, and we offer a prayer to You, Lady, Thy servants’ sins: O most merciful and wonderful Light of the intelligent, Queen, who gave birth to the King Christ, our God, the Life-Giver of all, glorified from the heavenly and praised from the earthly, angelic mind , luminous star, most holy, the Lady of all creatures, the divine Maiden, the undefiled Bride, the chamber of the Most Holy Spirit, the fiery throne of the invisible King, the heavenly ark, the carrier of the Words of God, the fiery chariot, the chamber of the living God, the ineffable composition of the flesh of Christ, the nest of the heavenly Eagle, the turtledove God-voiced, meek dove, quiet and gentle, Child-loving Mother, an abyss of mercy, opening the cloud of God's wrath, immeasurable depth, inexpressible secret, unknown miracle, not made by hands in the temple of the One King of all ages, fragrant censer, honest scarlet, richly woven purple, spiritual paradise, life-giving Garden branch, a beautiful flower, heavenly joy that has blossomed for us, the grape of our salvation, the cup of the Heavenly King, in which the wine of inexhaustible grace has dissolved from the Holy Spirit, intercessor of the law, the conception of the true faith of Christ, an unshakable pillar, the sword of God’s wrath against those who oppose God, intimidation of demons, in battle victory, the true keeper of all Christians and the known salvation of all peace!

O all-merciful Lady Virgin and Lady Theotokos, hear us praying to You, and show Your mercy on Your people, pray to Your Son to deliver us from all evil and save our monastery and every monastery, and the city, and the country of the faithful, and people who piously resort and calling on Your holy name, from every adversity, destruction, famine, cowardice, flood, fire, sword, invasion of foreigners and civil strife, from every illness and every situation, so that neither wounds, nor rebuke, nor pestilence, nor any righteous wrath of God will diminish Thy servants. But observe and save with Your mercy, O Lady, praying for us, and grant us the beneficial dissolution of the air at the time of the fruitful offering. Ease, uplift and have mercy, having mercy on the Lady, the Mother of God, in every trouble and need that exists. Remember Your servants and do not despise our tears and sighs, and renew us with the goodness of Your mercy, so that we may be comforted with thanksgiving, having found You as a helper. Have mercy, O Most Pure Lady, on Your weak people, our hope. Gather those who are scattered, guide those who have gone astray to the right path, bring back those who have fallen away from the pious faith of their fathers, support old age, bring understanding to the young, bring up babies and glorify the glorifying Thee, and preserve the Church of Your Son to the fullest and preserve for the length of days.

O merciful and most merciful Queen of heaven and earth, Ever-Virgin Mother of God! Through Your intercession, have mercy on our country and its army and all Orthodox Christians, preserving them under the roof of Your mercy, protect with Your honest robe and pray from You, who was incarnate without the seed of Christ, our God, that He may gird us with strength from above against all our visible and invisible enemies. Save and have mercy, O Lady, on the great lord and father of our Kirill, His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus', your Eminence metropolitans, archbishops and bishops of the Orthodox, priests and deacons, and the entire church clergy, and the entire monastic rank, and all the faithful people who worship and praying before Your honorable icon. Look upon us all with the gaze of Your merciful intercession, raise us up from the depths of sin and enlighten the eyes of the heart to the vision of salvation, be merciful to us here and at the Last Judgment of Your Son, pray for us, having reposed in piety from this life, Your servants in eternal life with the angels and archangels and with all the saints come, so that they may appear at the right hand of Your Son and God, and through Your prayer grant all Orthodox Christians to live with Christ and enjoy the joys of angels in heavenly villages. For You are, Lady, the glory of heaven and the hope of earth, You are our hope and intercessor of all those who come to You and ask Your holy help. You are our warm prayer service to Your Son and our God. Your Motherly prayer can do much to implore the Lord, and through Your intercession we dare to approach the throne of grace of His most holy and life-giving Mysteries, even if we are unworthy. Moreover, seeing Your all-honorable image and the Almighty held by Your hand on the icon, we rejoice, sinners, falling with compunction, and we kiss this love, longingly, Lady, with Your holy, God-pleasing prayers, milk the heavenly endless life and shamelessly stand on the day of judgment at the right hand of Your Son and God ours, glorifying Him, together with the Originless Father and the Most Holy, Good, Life-Giving and Consubstantial Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
