History of writing

Psalm 27 was written at the same time as a number of others included in the Psalter collection. Experts who study the works of King David have no doubt about this. The song of praise became for the prophet a cry of the soul addressed to the Lord, and it remains such to this day for modern Christians.

The theme of the 27th Psalm is similar to the theme of the 26th, some suggest that this work continues it. This possibility cannot be excluded, because this text was composed by God’s anointed during the time of his persecution, the uprising organized by Absalom. Fleeing from his son and his entourage, David hoped to ensure his safety in his wanderings. All this time he hoped in the Almighty, his mercy, prayed for a fair trial for apostates, for punishment for enemies. An important emphasis in the work is placed on the theme of saving the soul of the righteous.

The meaning of Psalm 27

Verses 1 to 3: The king asks God to answer his repentance and prayer. He hopes that the Almighty will not remain silent and turn a blind eye to the evil deeds of the lawless. He does not believe that the Lord will reject the requests of the innocent, so he does not stop crying out to heaven. David admits that he is not sinless; in his life he has made many mistakes, which he sincerely regrets, counting on the mercy of the One Creator.

He begins to prove that the Lord is the Creator of all creation and, firstly, of the earth, which he filled with mercy, and which could not otherwise stand without being filled with it. Of course, the heavens would not have existed, as well as their powers, that is, the divine and rational powers, if they had not been supported by His Word.

32:6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were established. Here the doctrine of the Holy Trinity is revealed. And through the Spirit of His mouth is all their strength. He calls the Holy Spirit the mouth of God, for the prophets who spoke to them said, “This is the mouth of the Lord who speaks” (Isa. 1:20).

32:7 Gather like the skin of the water of the sea. He calls on the water of the sea and, as if in a kind of bottle, contains it in the clouds, as it is said in another place: call on the water of the sea, and pour it out on the face of all the earth (Amos 5:8). Place in the treasures of the abyss, that is, seal the abysses as if in treasuries, so that the overflowing does not drown the dry land.

32:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD. Let the earth no longer honor demons. From Him those who live throughout the world will move. People living throughout the universe, hearing about Him, will move out of their previous state, in which they served idols, and submit to their Creator.

32:9 For He spoke, and it came to pass: He commanded, and it was created. Being indicates what is essential in rational creatures, and creation means changing them from worse to better. Moreover, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. (2 Cor. 5:17).

32:10 The Lord destroyeth the councils of the tongues: understand the nations spiritually. He sweeps aside the thoughts of people, and sweeps aside the advice of princes. For he made the plots of all the Jews unsuccessful by resurrecting on the third day. And this is what was, what He wants and what remains forever.

33:9 Taste and see that the Lord is good. Taste, he says, the true bread that came down from heaven. Blessed is the man who trusts in the world; because he will accept the future life.

33:13 And your lips shall not speak of flattery. The world is Christ; and taking care of all this is life and good days.

33:15 Turn away from evil, and do good: seek peace, and marry, etc. What has been said: turn away from evil is taught by fear; and to this: do good - love. And therefore, he who loves is superior to him who has fear.
