Basic Five-Number Prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Five-numbered prayers are special prayers that were recorded by Saint Dmitry of Rostov from the words of one elder after his visions. Prayer requests are dedicated to all the sorrows that the Virgin Mary had to endure.

Dmitry Rostovsky was born in one of the small villages near Kiev. His parents were sincere believers and raised their son in the fear of God. When the boy grew up, he expressed a desire to devote his life to serving God. To do this, he entered the Kiev-Mohyla Academy, where he studied foreign languages in depth. At the age of 18, he was sent to serve in the Kirillovsky Monastery, where he was named Dmitry.

During the reign of Peter 1, the clergyman was sent by the metropolitan to the Rostov parish. He fully supported all the undertakings of the Russian Tsar, but at the same time sought to separate church and state affairs. When the saint died, he was buried in the Rostov cathedral church. After his death, papers with five-numbered prayers were found in his cell.

In the eighteenth century, the church decided to repair the Rostov Cathedral Church. The need arose to move the saint's grave. The workers' surprise knew no bounds when they discovered his incorrupt body, although the coffin was completely rotten. The saint's relics were transferred to another place, and after some time it was noticed that they were healing people. Since then, Saint Dmitry of Rostov has been canonized.

Features and history

The five-numbered prayers addressed to the Blessed Virgin Mary are not suitable for all believers. They are usually read by monks or people close to the monastic lifestyle. This is due to the fact that this is a special type of petition, which is pronounced only after receiving a blessing from the priest. This is how they differ from the more common prayers available to most believers.

Ordinary people do not need to think about increasing the number of prayers counted. They must focus on attention, faith and reverence while reciting the sacred texts. The fifth prayers may sometimes be recited by the congregation. But they cannot replace standard texts.

Dmitry Rostovsky is considered the creator of the Five-Numbered Prayers, who composed them according to the vision of an elder. They were created in memory of the sorrow that the Mother of God endured.

Dmitry Rostovsky devoted his entire life to serving the Lord. He was born into a Christian family that lived near Kiev in the village of Makarov. He graduated from the Kiev-Mohyla Academy and received good knowledge of foreign languages. After graduating from the academy, the young man went to serve at the Cyril monastery. Here he got his name Dmitry.

The last years of Dmitry's life were associated with the Rostov parish, where he ended up during the reign of Peter the Great. He supported Peter's initiatives, but distinguished between state and church affairs. After his death, Dmitry was buried in the Rostov church.

A real miracle was that during the renovation of the church in the middle of the 18th century, the incorrupt body of the monk was discovered. And this despite the fact that the papers, walls and the house itself became damp and fell into disrepair. Among the papers found, the Five-Numbered Prayers were discovered. More specific information about their creation has not reached our days.

Some time after its discovery, the remains of the saint’s body began to heal sick people. Therefore, the monk was canonized.

Many believers especially revere the works written by Dmitry during his life. These include the Five-Numbered Prayers to the Most Holy Theotokos. Prayer requests to the saint are said to heal eye diseases and lung problems.

To obtain permission from the priest to read Dmitry’s texts, you need to understand in what cases such a petition can be read.

The Five-Number Prayers are said on the following occasions:

  • the person is in a difficult mental state (despondency and many everyday problems);
  • when a person finds himself in the power of sins and cannot cope with them on his own;
  • when relatives and friends turn away from a person;
  • with foul language;
  • with prolonged non-attendance to church and avoidance of communion.

It is necessary to recite the texts of these prayers with deep faith, even in a state of despondency and mental tossing. Only in this case, a prayer service will help remove a heavy burden from the soul, look at problems in a new way, and find the optimal solution for them, as well as find peace and tranquility.

Today, the Five-Number Prayers occupy an ambiguous position in Christianity. They have not yet received the approval of the Church. However, they were not rejected by her either. Therefore, special permission is required to read them, since for ordinary believers, in most cases, more familiar prayer texts are suitable.

When the Orthodox fifth prayers are read

Believers should read the fifth prayers only if the soul is in confusion. They will help you calm down and are suitable for life situations where every day brings new troubles and life is filled with despondency.

To obtain permission to read these prayers, you need to contact a priest and confess.

Permission will be given in the following cases:

  • When a believer suffers greatly and has accumulated a lot of problems in his life.
  • When a believer has experienced terrible grief and dreams of spiritual peace.
  • When a believer lives in sinfulness, and realizing this, he is unable to extricate himself from the current situation.
  • When close people turn away from a believer for some reason, and he is left alone, which brings him great suffering.
  • When a believer, for whatever reason, began to avoid church services and communion.

Five-numbered prayers can be read when using foul language. Unfortunately, for many people, swear words have become commonplace and people have lost control of their speech, regardless of their social status. If a person seeks to purify his speech, then daily reading of these prayers in combination with a pious lifestyle will help him in this.

Is it possible to read prayers of five and in what cases?

The texts are not canonized, but they are not prohibited from reading either. They are read mainly by monks and hermits. It is not recommended for ordinary believers to simply read them, only in case of great need. There is a list of the main pains when reading the fifth prayers:

  • severe mental state, inability to get out of depression on your own, thoughts of suicide, worthlessness of life (there are also prayers for depression, melancholy and despondency);
  • a believer is not able to extricate himself from sin;
  • family and friends reject;
  • It is difficult to get rid of curses, especially if they are attracted by foul language.

And also in cases where faith is lost or a severe illness overcomes, the blessing of the confessor is necessary to read the fifth prayer.

Five-number prayers | Translation of prayers

These prayers were compiled by Saint Demetrius of Rostov according to the vision of an elder in memory of the sorrows that the Blessed Virgin Mary endured.

“One elder of the God-bearing Fathers, standing in prayer and being in delight, heard the voice of our Lord Jesus Christ speaking to the Most Pure and Most Holy Theotokos, His Mother: “Tell Me, My Mother, what were the greatest sorrows in Your life that you endured for My sake?” And the Most Holy One answered:

– My Son and God! I endured the greatest five sorrows for Your sake: the first

- when I heard from the prophet Simeon that You must be killed;
the second
- when I was looking for You in Jerusalem, I did not see You for three days;
the third
- when I learned that the Jews had captured and bound You;
fourth
- when I saw You on the cross crucified among the thieves;
fifth
- when I saw You lying in the coffin.

And the Lord said to Her: “I tell You, My Mother: if anyone reads each of Your sorrows every day with My prayer, which is “Our Father” and the Archangel’s joy (“Virgin Mother of God, rejoice”) - for the first sorrow I will give him the knowledge of sins and contrition for them; for the second, I will give him forgiveness of all sins; for the third - I will return to him his virtues, destroyed by sins; for the fourth - I will feed him, after his death, with My Divine Body and Blood; for the fifth - I will appear to him at the time of his death and take his soul into eternal life. Amen".

Beginning of prayers

Glory to Thee, Christ my God, who did not destroy me, a sinner with my iniquities, but who even to this day has endured my sins ( bow

)

Grant me, Lord, to live this day without sins; grant me, Lord, not to anger You, my Creator, with any word, deed, or thought, but that all my deeds, words and thoughts be for the glory of Your Most Holy Name ( bow

) God, be merciful to me, a sinner, throughout my life, and do not leave me after my outcome and death (
bow
)

Third prayer

Undefiled, Unblessed, Imperishable, Most Pure, Unbridled Bride of God, Mother of God Mary, Lady of Peace and My Hope!

Look upon me, a sinner, at this hour, and from Thy pure blood Thou hast unknowingly given birth to the Lord Jesus Christ, make me merciful through Thy motherly prayers;

The one who was ripeningly condemned and wounded in the heart with the weapon of sadness, wound my soul with Divine love!

The mountaineer who mourned him in chains and abuse, grant me tears of contrition; With His free conduct to death, my soul was seriously ill, free me from illness, so that I may glorify You, worthily glorified forever.

Amen.
