The history of the appearance of the akathist
The church reveres Saints Joachim and Anna as Godfathers of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Only pious people not subject to sin could become the parents of the future Mother of God. The mother of the Virgin Mary was the daughter of a priest from the tribe of Levi (the descendants of Levi, the son of Jacob, were dedicated to serve God; Jacob is the ancestor of the Jewish people). Joachim had blood relations with King David of Israel.
The married couple was distinguished by high morality, kindness and responsiveness to the hardships of their neighbors. Joachim donated most of his income to the poor and clergy. But those around them treated them with contempt, considering them, according to Jewish tradition, rejected from God due to the lack of children.
Despite the constant humiliation from people, including relatives, the couple did not become bitter towards each other. They experienced deep feelings that did not fade away throughout their entire life together. Saints Anna and Joachim fervently prayed to God for the happiness of having a child.
The Lord rewarded them for their piety and faith: after 20 years of marriage, an angel appeared to Anna and Joachim with the news that they would have a daughter, who was destined to become the mother of the Messiah. Happy parents made a covenant to dedicate the child to God. When Mary was 5 years old, they brought her to the church, where the future Mother of God lived until her marriage to Joseph the Betrothed.
The parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary lived a long life, undefiled by malice and envy, filled with love for each other and for God. An akathist in memory of the holy Fathers of God was compiled in 1911-1912 and approved for general church use. Author unknown.
Akathist is a hymn of praise performed during services in churches or at home (in private). The first glorifying hymn was composed in honor of the Virgin Mary in Constantinople (VI century). Prayers to the icon of the Mother of God helped miraculously escape from the Ottoman Turks who were besieging the city.
After 5 centuries, akathists became widespread in the Russian Orthodox Church.

Rules for reading the Akathist of Righteous Anna to the Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Akathists are read privately on any day except Lent. Akathist translated from Greek means “unsaddled song,” that is, the prayer service must be held while standing.
