As is known, Patriarch Irenaeus of Jerusalem several years ago was deprived of his patriarchal dignity by the Synod of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem on false charges of selling a church hotel to city authorities. Despite these difficult conditions, the author of these lines had the opportunity through the window of an Arab apartment to communicate with the imprisoned Patriarch, who speaks good Russian. Patriarch Irenaeus spoke about the real reasons for his defrocking and isolation. The main reason was Irenaeus’s desire to establish canonical order and discipline among the monastics - members of the Holy Sepulcher Brotherhood. Having received information about specific cases of violation of monastic vows and the presence of gay people among monastics, the Patriarch began to conduct an investigation. He removed three violators from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the investigation continued. The guilty began to file complaints against the Patriarch, accusing him of crimes against church property.

I remember the words of Patriarch Irinei that the main culprit of such harsh repressions against him was the then head of the DECR MP, Metropolitan Kirill. It was he who spoke with the primates of the Orthodox local Churches and convinced them to support and sanction the removal of Irenaeus.

At the end of the conversation, the illegally defrocked Patriarch handed me a selection of documents in English refuting the accusations against him. By the way, the church hotel, which Patriarch Irenaeus was accused of selling to the Israeli authorities, is still owned by the Jerusalem Patriarchate. Obviously, the main reason for the defrocking of Patriarch Irenaeus, a former cell attendant and disciple of Patriarch Diodorus, was the desire to eliminate the primate of the Jerusalem Church, who could become an obstacle to the implementation of ecumenical decisions at the so-called Pan-Orthodox Council, which is expected in 2011.

At least until this Council is held, Irenaeus, who was not sentenced to imprisonment by any secular court, has no chance of seeing this very freedom.

From the very beginning, the new Patriarch declared his support for the Palestinian struggle for independence, maintained friendly relations with the head of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat, which is why Israel did not want to recognize the new patriarch for a long time, as reported on the official website of the Russian Orthodox Church MP (https://www .patriarchia.ru/db/text/8957.html).

It is not surprising that Patriarch Irenaeus soon became involved in a number of real estate scandals (allegedly selling church plots in Jerusalem to Israeli citizens, which in fact was not confirmed in court). However, on May 6, 2005, he was removed from office by the Holy Synod of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church. On May 24, 2005, in Phanar, under the chairmanship of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, a “Pan-Orthodox Council” was convened, which confirmed the deposition of Irenaeus and decided to cross out his name from the diptychs and not commemorate him.

Considering the accusations to be false and the removal illegal, Patriarch Irenaeus refused to resign and continued to perform divine services as Patriarch. On June 7, 2005, the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem decided to impose sanctions on the removed Patriarch Irenaeus; he was “dismissed from his existing rank.” The Patriarch did not recognize this lawlessness either.

“The statement by members of the brotherhood of the Holy Sepulcher regarding the situation in the Patriarchate of Jerusalem” demonstrates as best as possible the absence of accusations against the Patriarch and reveals the full power of the dirt that is openly poured on him. Let us recall the following points in the story of the “dismissal” of the Patriarch.

The clearest accusations were that the Patriarch was selling the property of the Patriarchate to Jews. This has never been proven and the Patriarch was not convicted on this matter. The members of the “Synod” retreated from communion with their First Bishop before his condemnation, which is a violation of the Canonical Law of the Church, i.e. their “synod” without a head is schismatic. They turned to the Ecumenical Patriarch with a request to resolve the conflict. The Ecumenical Patriarch convened the “Great Council” on May 24, 2005 in Constantinople to resolve the conflict at the request of the schismatics, not at the request of the Patriarch. The Great Pan-Orthodox Council can only be convened at the request of the Primate of the Church where a problem exists. So Constantinople trampled this rule and will continue to trample it in the future.

The Churches of Constantinople, Alexandria, Russia, Romania, Cyprus, Greece, and Albania – 7 Churches – voted against the Patriarch of Jerusalem. Antioch, Poland and Georgia voted for the Patriarch; Serbian, Bulgarian and Czech lands did not come (due to the fact that the Council was convened 2 days in advance, and the primates were not informed), so in essence it is seven against seven. It must be emphasized that the Antiochian Church (Arab) voted in favor of Patriarch Irenaeus, while they should have been his ardent enemies if he sold the lands and property of the Patriarchate to the Jews...

The Patriarchs of Jerusalem have always been in prayerful communion with the Russian Orthodox Church abroad. Biography[ | ]

Born on August 28, 1930 in the village of Vidova[sr], he received the name Miroslav at baptism.

He graduated from primary school in his native village, then graduated from high school in Cacak. In 1951 he graduated from theological seminary in Prizren. Then he graduated from the Faculty of Theology at the University of Belgrade. After graduating from university, he served in the army.

In October 1959, he took monastic vows from Patriarch Herman of Serbia in the Rakovica Monastery with the name Irinej. On October 24, 1959, he was ordained a hierodeacon there; on October 27 of the same year, in the Ruzhitsa church, he was ordained a hieromonk by the same bishop.

From 1959 to 1968 - teacher at Prizren Theological Seminary. postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Athens. After this, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Athens.

Since 1969 - head of the monastic school of the Ostrog Monastery.

From 1971 to 1974 he was professor and rector of the Prizren Seminary.

In May 1974, he was elected suffragan bishop of the Patriarch of Serbia with the title of Moravich, and on July 14 his episcopal consecration took place.

At a meeting of the Holy Council of Bishops on May 21-28, 1975, he was elected Bishop of Nis. Enthroned on the throne of the Diocese of Niš in the Cathedral Church on June 15.

Patriarchate[ | ]

On January 22, 2010 in Belgrade, on the first day of the Council of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, he was elected as the new patriarch[2]. The first enthronement took place on January 23, 2010 at the Cathedral of the Holy Archangels in Belgrade[3][4].

The official enthronement ceremony was planned for April 25, 2010 at the Patriarchal See of Peć in Kosovo, which was fraught with political difficulties[5]. At the beginning of March, it was reported that enthronement would be postponed until the fall[6]. The re-enthronement took place on October 3, 2010 in the Church of the Holy Apostles in the Patriarchate of Pecs according to the liturgy[7] with increased security measures provided by Italian military personnel from the KFOR contingent[8]; Serbian President Boris Tadic, Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, more than 400 other officials, as well as more than 6,000 worshipers were present. After the enthronement, Patriarch Irenaeus addressed the believers with an archpastoral speech, in which he noted:[8]

We pray to the Lord, to the holy Peć saints of God and the holy Kosovo martyrs, all the saints from our family and all the holy saints of God, that peace, harmony and love between the people will reign on this earth, and that all the wounds inflicted will be healed as soon as possible hatred and malice.

During his patriarchate, the decoration of the cathedral church of St. Sava on Vracar (Belgrade) was completed, the construction of which had continued since 1935[9].

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, speaking at his burial ceremony on November 22, 2021, among the merits of the deceased, noted his tireless concern for Kosovo and Metohija - so that an independent Kosovo would never be recognized by Serbia, his establishment of partnership relations with the state, establishing a dialogue with the Vatican, in during which, according to Vucic, he “convinced Pope Francis” that the Croatian Cardinal Aloysie Stepinac was not a saint[10].

Illness, death and funeral[ | ]

On November 1, in Podgorica, he participated in the burial ceremony of Metropolitan Amfilohije (Radovic) of Montenegro, who died from complications caused by coronavirus infection COVID-19[11], during which the prescribed epidemiological measures were grossly violated. It is believed that he could then have contracted a coronavirus infection, which was diagnosed in him on November 4[12][13][14]. On the same day he was hospitalized; Doctors from Russia took part in his treatment[15].

According to the official statement of the press service of the Serbian Patriarchate, he died on the morning of November 20, 2021[16][14][13] (the first official to announce his death earlier that day on his Instagram was Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic[17]).

On November 22, the funeral service was led by the chairman of the Synod of Bishops of the SOC, Metropolitan Chrysostom (Jevich) of Dabro-Bosnia, co-served by the hierarchs of the Moscow Patriarchate and Serbian bishops and in the presence of senior officials of Serbia and the Republika Srpska[18][19]. He was buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of St. Sava on Vracar in Belgrade[20].
