Calendar is a system for counting long periods of time, based on the periodicity of such natural phenomena as the change of day and night, the change of phases of the Moon , change of seasons.

Calendar - (from Latin Calendarium - debt book) a system for counting large periods of time, based on the visible movements of celestial bodies. The cyclic movement of such astronomical objects as the Earth, the Sun and the Moon is of primary importance for the construction and understanding of calendars. The word “calendar” itself comes from the Latin caleo (to proclaim), calendae (first day of the month) and, in fact, calendarium (debt book). A calendar is usually called a system of counting long periods of time based on the periodicity of natural phenomena, dividing them into shorter periods: millennia, centuries, years, months, weeks and days.

Calendar – (from Latin calendae or kalendae, “calends” - the name of the first day of the month among the ancient Romans), a way of dividing the year into convenient periodic time intervals. The main tasks of the calendar are: a) fixing dates and b) measuring time intervals.

The first calendar arose a long time ago, in ancient times, because there was a need to measure time. The word calendar comes from the Latin words caleo - to proclaim and calendarium - debt book. In Ancient Rome, debtors paid interest on the day of the calendar, the first days of the month) - a number system for large periods of time based on the periodicity of the movement of celestial bodies: the Sun - in solar calendars, the Moon - in lunar calendars, and at the same time both the Sun and Moon in lunisolar calendars .

The calendar allows you to record historical and social events in their chronological sequence. One of the important tasks of the calendar is to determine the moments of church events, moving and non-moving holidays (for example, Easter).

There are three main types of calendars: 1) lunar, 2) solar and 3) lunisolar.

1. Lunar calendar, which is based on a synodic lunar month with a duration of 29.5 average solar days. Originated over 30,000 years ago. The lunar year of the calendar contains 354 (355) days (11.25 days shorter than the solar one) and is divided into 12 months of 30 (odd) and 29 (even) days each (Muslim, Turkish, etc.). The lunar calendar is adopted as a religious and state calendar in the Muslim states of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, the United Arab Republic and others. Solar and lunisolar calendars are used in parallel for planning and regulating economic activities.

2. Solar calendar, which is based on the tropical year. Originated over 6000 years ago. Currently accepted as the world calendar. For example, the “old style” Julian solar calendar contains 365.25 days. Developed by the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes, introduced by Emperor Julius Caesar in Ancient Rome in 46 BC and then spread throughout the world. In Rus' it was adopted in 988 NE. In the Julian calendar, the length of the year is determined to be 365.25 days; three “simple” years have 365 days each, one leap year has 366 days. There are 12 months in a year of 30 and 31 days each (except February). The Julian year lags behind the tropical year by 11 minutes 13.9 seconds per year. The error per day accumulated over 128.2 years. Over 1500 years of its use, an error of 10 days has accumulated.

In the "new style" Gregorian solar calendar, the length of the year is 365.242500 days (26 seconds longer than the tropical year). In 1582, the Julian calendar, by order of Pope Gregory XIII, was reformed in accordance with the project of the Italian mathematician Luigi Lilio Garalli (1520-1576). The counting of days was moved forward by 10 days and it was agreed that every century that is not divisible by 4 without a remainder: 1700, 1800, 1900, 2100, etc. should not be considered a leap year. This corrects an error of 3 days every 400 years. An error of 1 day “accumulates” in 3323 years. New centuries and millennia begin on January 1 of the “first” year of a given century and millennium: thus, the 21st century and the 3rd millennium AD (AD) began on January 1, 2001 according to the Gregorian calendar.

In our country, before the revolution, the “old style” Julian calendar was used, the error of which by 1917 was 13 days. On February 14, 1918, the world-accepted “new style” Gregorian calendar was introduced in the country and all dates moved forward 13 days. The difference between the old and new styles was 11 days in the 18th century, 12 days in the 19th century, and 13 days in the 20th century - this will remain until 2100.

The solar calendar usually focuses on four main dates - two equinoxes and two solstices. The accuracy of a calendar is determined by how accurately the equinox falls on the same day each year. The lunisolar calendar is an attempt to harmonize the length of the lunar month and the solar (tropical) year through periodic adjustments. To ensure that the average number of days per year according to the lunar calendar corresponds to the solar year, a thirteenth lunar month is added every 2 or 3 years. This trick is required to ensure that the growing seasons fall on the same dates each year.

3. Lunisolar calendar, in which the movement of the Moon is coordinated with the annual movement of the Sun. The year consists of 12 lunar months of 29 and 30 days each, to which “leap” years containing an additional 13th month are periodically added to take into account the movement of the Sun. As a result, “simple” years last 353, 354, 355 days, and “leap” years last 383, 384 or 385 days. It arose at the beginning of the 1st millennium BC and was used in Ancient China, India, Babylon, Judea, Greece, and Rome. Currently adopted in Israel (the beginning of the year falls on different days between September 6 and October 5) and is used, along with the state one, in the countries of Southeast Asia (Vietnam, China, etc.).

Nahum, the accuser of Nineveh

Estimated reading time: less than a minute.

Another prophet's name, Nahum, means "consolation", and he clearly lived in the 7th century BC. e., when Assyria was the most powerful power in the Middle East. But it was not eternal either - this is exactly what the prophecy of Nahum speaks of. He, too, announces disaster and ruin, but not to his compatriots, but to the cruel invaders, the Assyrians. This is probably how they cursed Hitler’s Reich in the early forties of the last century and wished it a speedy death. But how could this be expected if Assyria had the greatest military power and did not know defeat for a long time - just like the Reich?

“Great is the patience of the Lord, enormous is the power, He will not leave the guilty without punishment: He walks in a storm and a whirlwind, tramples the clouds like dust!... Who can stand before His indignation? Who can withstand His burning wrath? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are destroyed before Him. Good Lord! He is a refuge on a sorrowful day; He knows those who resort to Him. But Nineveh will be swept away by the flood forever.”

Nineveh is the last of several capitals of this state, it was located in the north of what is now Iraq. She fell in 612 BC. e. under the blows of their former subjects, most notably the Babylonians, who were destined to create the next great empire in the ancient Near East. “The destroyer rises against Nineveh... The shields of his warriors are red, his warriors are dressed in purple, the metal of his chariots sparkles on the day when he appears, shaking his spear shafts. Chariots rush through the streets, flashing through the squares like torches and brilliant lightning! The king summons his nobles, but they stumble along the way and rush to prepare their defenses against the wall. Then the river gates open and the palace is swept away!”

This picture is quite common for other prophecies about other countries and cities: an enemy army breaks into the city, destroying everything in its path... But what are these “river gates” and what do they have to do with it? Nineveh was a huge and well-fortified city with a large garrison and abundant supplies. When troops of different tribes led by the Babylonians approached the walls of the city, they faced a seemingly long and grueling siege with an unclear prospect. But everything turned out completely differently. Nineveh stood on the banks of the Tigris River, and the besieging army dug a canal to bring river water directly under the walls of the city. And then an unprecedented downpour poured in, the riverbed overflowed, and a large section of the city wall was right next to the royal palace! - was washed away by a stormy stream and collapsed. Following the water, the army besieging it rushed into the city through these “river gates”. The city fell overnight.

Today, interpreters argue: did Nahum really guess that this would happen? Or did he make up his prophecy “in hindsight”, already knowing what happened to Nineveh? After all, he could not have foreseen such an unexpected turn of events! It is difficult to say with certainty who understood what almost three thousand years ago, but if Nahum had simply described events that had already happened, he would probably have done it more colorfully and brightly. No, the foggy “river gates” look exactly like a prophecy, the meaning of which even the prophet himself might not understand at that moment, and when it all happened, the picture behind these words was revealed. But we will not find eyewitness accounts of how the hated Nineveh fell in the Bible. It's not as interesting as a prophecy coming true.

But the main thing in the book is not the details of the death of Nineveh, but its causes. “This is for the many fornications of a harlot, pleasant in appearance, skilled in sorcery: with the help of fornication she traded with nations, with the help of sorcery - with tribes... There is no healing for your wound, your illness is severe, and everyone who hears about you strikes in the palm of your hand: over whom did your cruelty not weigh you down?” The Lord convicts His chosen people when they fall into sin, and punishes them if they do not listen to reproof. But this does not mean at all that the crimes of other peoples and countries are indifferent to Him. He is the Judge of all the earth, and this message is one of the main ones that the biblical prophets brought to humanity.

Samaria, the Northern Kingdom, perished before Nineveh. But for Judea, the death of another empire meant getting rid of a terrible threat... as it turns out, not for very long. But for now, Nahum’s words are full of bright joy. He does not rejoice over the death of the enemy, he rejoices that the Lord has delivered His people: “Behold, a messenger runs through the mountains, proclaiming peace! Celebrate, O Judea, your holidays, fulfill your vows, because the wicked will not pass through you again, he has disappeared forever!”

Venerable and Equal-to-the-Apostles Naum of Ohrid, wonderworker

Details Created 08/09/2018 14:31 Saint Naum of Ohrid was born in Mysia, as Bulgaria was once called, into a family of pious parents.
When he grew up, he, despising his noble origin and wealth, followed the Equal-to-the-Apostles Constantine the Philosopher and his brother Methodius, who went and preached Christianity among the Mysian, Dalmatian, Pannonian and Moravian peoples, and reached with them all the way to Rome. There, blessed Pope Adrian, according to God's revelation to him, prepared a solemn meeting for them on the approach to the city with the entire church clergy and eminent townspeople. God performed many miracles and healings to glorify His saints. After the meeting, the pope served the Divine Liturgy and tonsured Constantine the Philosopher into monasticism, giving him the name Cyril. He ordained Methodius as archbishop of Moravia and all of Pannonia. At the end of the Liturgy, Pope Adrian showed everyone the books translated by the brothers from Greek into Bulgarian. Each of them, showing a miracle, opened itself at the words of the pope: “Blessed be God!” Adrian said that those books were a true sacrifice pleasing to God. At the same time, many were ordained by him as priests and deacons, including Clement and Naum. The Pope ordered the ordained to perform all the liturgical rules, both evening and morning, according to the Bulgarian books in the large church of St. Apostle Peter, which was done. There, the Divine Liturgy was held according to the new books, and everyone glorified God for the miracles He had shown. Some time later, on February 14, 869, the God-bearing Father Cyril died in Rome. His body was laid in the church of St. Clement of Rome, a disciple of the Apostle Paul. After the death of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Slovenian teacher, God showed miracles and through signs glorified His true saint. Having finished grieving for his dear brother and having received the blessing from the blessed Pope Adrian to set off, Methodius, accompanied by his disciples, went to Pannonia and Moravia, where, in the rank of archbishop, he arranged everything for the good of the flock entrusted to him. After his death on April 6, 885, the archbishop's throne was occupied by Viching, who followed the heresy of Macedonius and Apollinaris, according to which it was argued that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son. The disciples of Saint Methodius had to experience many troubles and sorrows from him. They were kept in captivity, chained, but they prayed fervently, and several times there was an earthquake, forcing everyone to flee their houses, and the doors of the dungeon swung open, and the chains themselves fell from the prisoners. People, amazed at the miracle, called the disciples great saints. However, the Doukhobors attributed everything that happened to Beelzebub, just as the Jews did what Jesus did (Matthew 12:24), and they expelled the disciples themselves from those lands, causing them a lot of suffering. Those of them who had the rank of presbyter or deacon were handed over to the Jews for money, and they took everyone to Venice for sale. But at God’s discretion, during the auction, an envoy of the ruler came to the city from Constantinople on some business. Having learned about the prisoners, he ransomed some, simply took others, took them to Constantinople and presented them to Emperor Vasily. Each of the exiles was restored to his rank, and none of them had to die in slavery. Some remained in Byzantium with the help provided to them by the local rulers, while others returned to Bulgaria, where they were received with great honor. Moravia, as prophesied by the holy Archbishop Methodius, soon received reward from God for its iniquities and heresies, for the expulsion of the faithful fathers and the suffering they endured from the heretics. A few years later, the Paeonian people came, captured and devastated the Moravian lands, and those of the inhabitants who survived fled to the Bulgarians, so that all their devastated land was left to their enemies. Those of Methodius' disciples who were not sold to the Jews went to the Danube River, shaking off the dust from their feet, as the Scripture says (Matthew 10:14). In the village where they stayed, through their prayers, the deceased only son of a certain nobleman was resurrected. His house was enlightened with Christianity, like many others, and the residents began to honor the teachers who came to them. But they moved on. Arriving at the Danube, they prayed, calling on the name of the Holy Trinity, tied a raft from trees and crossed it to the other bank. In Belgrade, the representative of the Bulgarian Tsar met them with honor and immediately sent them to the ruler himself, the blessed Boris-Mikhail, in his capital - the city of Pliska. Upon learning of the arrival of the saints, Tsar Boris was very happy, because he had been looking for such teachers of the Bulgarian language for a long time. Saints Clement and Naum stayed in the house of the boyar Eschagus, and the Angelarium in the house of Cheslav. Blessed Angelarius soon fell ill with a serious illness and went to the Lord. Tsar Boris loved to talk with the saints and listened with pleasure to their gracious words about faith and pious life. In 886, he sent Clement to the western borders of his lands, to a place called Kutmichevitsa, where he founded a school of the Bulgarian language and gathered up to 3,500 students, whom he taught Bulgarian writing, the Holy Scriptures, Christian piety and church deanery. From these disciples priests, deacons and readers were appointed. Naum remained in Pliska and Preslav, continuing the same work of educating people. In 893, Saint Clement was installed as Bishop of Drembic, or Belich, at the request of Simeon, the son of Tsar Boris, who renounced the throne and took monastic vows. At the same time, Saint Naum was released by the Tsar to teach instead of Clement in the city of Ohrid. There he continued to perform exploits in pleasing God, preserving his virginity from birth to death. At the mouth of White Lake, the saint erected a large monastery, in which he built a temple of the Holy Archangels. This was done with money and by order of the blessed Tsar Boris-Mikhail and his son, the pious Tsar Simeon. Naum taught for seven years, and after this period he retired and settled in his monastery, where he lived for another ten years. At the end of his life, he took monastic vows and rested in peace in the Lord on December 23, already at a very old age. His body was taken away for burial by the hands of the holy bishop, Bishop Clement of Ohrid, who died six years later, in 910. The coffin of the Monk Naum was placed in the temple on the right side. God glorified the Monk Nahum with many miracles, casting out demons and healing from illnesses. Prayer to Equal-to-the-Apostles Naum, Ohrid miracle worker You, saint of the Living God, Naum the miracle worker, who fulfilled the law of God and our Savior Jesus Christ, and who was honored by Him with eternal life, we bow to love, and we thank you with humility for your many miracles, helping others weak people and glorify the name of the Lord God and your Savior. For you, faithful servant of God and the Savior, have been given the grace of the All-Holy Spirit to cast out demons, to heal the sick, to strengthen the weak, to comfort the afflicted and to help in all sorrows. For this reason, we, who are unworthy, honor you as a spiritual treasure, through whom strength and heavenly consolation are poured out for everyone’s needs, and in praise we glorify the Creator, who bestowed upon you such divine power and wealth. We fall to you, righteous and friend of the angels, Reverend Our Father Naum, with repentance and tenderness, do not cease to pray for your Orthodox family before the Throne of the Most Holy, Consubstantial Trinity, for all those who flow and bow before your holy relics and your all-honorable icon, for the sick, and those who have fallen asleep in the faith, for old and young, for virgins and mothers. Holy Our Father Naum, man of God, cover our infirmities and heal our illnesses, with your prayers, quickly hear us and strive to help us, so that they never say unfaithfully: where is their God? O Reverend Father Naum, show your power, bestowed upon you by the Almighty Lord, on us, your sinful servants, enlighten our minds with the light of the Holy Gospel, which you preached in your life, and keep us in chastity, mental health, and drive away from us the dirty devil . Strengthen our bodies with health, so that we will be able to strive in a godly manner and serve our neighbors, grant us repentance and, having lived in good deeds and pleasing God, we will find the mercy of God at the Last Judgment of Christ. Pray, O glorious Naum, the wonderworker, for us, that our sins, voluntary and involuntary, may be forgiven, and may the Lord cleanse us with His Holy Spirit from all impurity, so that we may be worthy to appear in the Kingdom of Heaven, where with you we will glorify the Holy Trinity, Who has glorified you, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Troparion to Equal-to-the-Apostles Naum, the Wonderworker of Ohrid Troparion, tone 4: You left the world, clinging to Christ, you crucified the flesh, living in the Spirit, the all-blessed Naum, you strove to strive with the apostolic flow and you caught the Bulgarian faith in countless numbers. Also, through your prayers, deliver us from temptations. Kontakion, voice 3: The most honorable memory of your bright deeds, like a great sun, shines for everyone, illuminates the faces of those who sing you, drives away demons and all illnesses: for this reason, having come together, let us truly praise this love. Greatness We magnify Thee, holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Naum, who enlightened the entire Slovenian country with his teachings and brought them to Christ. Bulgarian patericon.

Memory of the Holy Prophet Nahum

  • On December 1, the Holy Church remembers the prayerful memory of the holy righteous Philaret the Merciful and the holy prophet Nahum. Read the life of Righteous Philaret here >>
  • The holy prophet Naum, one of the twelve so-called minor prophets, came from Galilee, from the village of Elkosha.
  • The main content of the book of Nahum is a prophecy about the fall and destruction of Nineveh, a prediction of the disasters that the righteous Lord will bring on this city, and the most vivid image of the final and complete destruction of this great and strongly fortified city.

The prophet Nahum predicts the destruction of Nineveh as a punishment for its iniquities and especially for the destruction of the kingdom of Israel and for Sennacherib's blasphemy against Jehovah. Thus, Nahum repeats the terrible prophecy that was spoken against Nineveh by the prophet Jonah; Jonah's prophecy about the destruction of Nineveh (Jon. 2:2) was not canceled, but only postponed. The Ninevites, having repented for a short time after the sermon of the prophet Jonah, seeing that his prophecy had not come true on them, again turned to their former evil deeds; By doing this they again angered God and offended His patience.

Prayers to the Holy Prophet Nahum

Prayer

O most praiseworthy and wonderful prophet of God, Nahum! Hear us, sinners and indecent ones, who at this hour stand before your holy icon and diligently resort to your intercession.

Pray for us, the Lover of Mankind, God, may He give us a spirit of repentance and contrition for our sins and, by His omnipotent grace, may He help us to leave the paths of wickedness, may we excel in every endeavor, may He strengthen us in the fight against our passions and lusts; may the spirit of humility and meekness, the spirit of brotherly love and kindness, the spirit of patience and chastity, the spirit of zeal for the glory of God and the salvation of our neighbors, implant into our hearts. Abolish with your prayers, prophet, the evil customs of the world, especially the destructive and pernicious spirit of this age, infecting the Christian race with disrespect for the Divine Orthodox Faith, for the statutes of the Holy Church and for the commandments of the Lord, disrespect for parents and those in power, and casting people into the abyss of wickedness , corruption and destruction. Turn away from us, most wonderfully prophesied, by your intercession the righteous wrath of God, and deliver all the cities and towns of our kingdom from rainlessness and famine, from terrible storms and earthquakes, from deadly plagues and diseases, from the invasion of enemies and internecine warfare. Strengthen Orthodox people with your prayers, prosper them in all good deeds and undertakings for the establishment of peace and truth in their power. Help the All-Russian Christ-loving army in battles with our enemies. Ask, prophet of God, from the Lord for our shepherds holy zeal for God, heartfelt concern for the salvation of the flock, wisdom in teaching and management, piety and strength in temptation, ask the judges for impartiality and selflessness, righteousness and compassion for the offended, for all those in authority to care for their subordinates, mercy and justice, and to subordinates we command humility and obedience to authority and diligent fulfillment of their duties; Yes, having lived in peace and piety in this world, we will be worthy to partake of eternal blessings in the Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom honor and worship are due, with His Beginning Father and the Most Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Exalting to God - Archangel Jeremiel

Every Christian is familiar with the Apocalypse - the Revelation of John the Theologian. But there are other apocalypses - this word is translated as “prophecy” or “revelation.” One such book is the Third Book of Ezra.

Cathedral of the Archangel Michael and all the ethereal heavenly powers

It is included in the Holy Scriptures, but is non-canonical. Despite this, it is recognized as edifying and useful for believers. On the pages of this book Archangel Jeremiel appears to us.

What do we know about the servant of God?

The Prophet Ezra (Ezra) is not the author of the book that is named after her.

The author is a person unknown to us who witnessed the disaster: in 70 AD, the Second Temple of the Jews was destroyed by the soldiers of Emperor Titus during the storming of Jerusalem.

Reflecting on the meaning of the disasters that befell his people, the author turns to the past - to the destruction of the First Temple.

Ezra is a prophet who witnessed the destruction of the First Temple. The author of the book puts his own thoughts into his mouth. Ezra’s experiences are those same “eternal questions”, the answers to which sooner or later every person is forced to seek: where does evil come from in our world and why does the Lord allow it? Is there Divine Justice?

The prophet asks questions about the ways of the Lord, about the fate of the first man Adam and Noah. The Lord sends Archangels to talk with him - first Uriel, and then Jeremiel.

The archangels answer Ezra's questions with visions in which revelation is revealed to him.

“I answered and said: I know, Lord, that the Most High is called merciful, because he has mercy on those who have not yet come into the world, and has mercy on those who live their lives in His law.

He is long-suffering, for He shows long-suffering to those who have sinned, as to His creation.

He is generous, for He is ready to give according to need, and abounding in mercy, for He multiplies His mercies to those who live now, to those who have lived, and to those who will live.” (3Ezra 7:63-65)

Ezra talks with the Archangels and finds hope in the coming of the Messiah to the world. His words contain analogies with the Revelation of John the Theologian.

“Take your number, O Zion, and shut up those who are clothed in white robes, who have fulfilled the law of the Lord. The number of your desired sons is complete. Ask the power of the Lord that your people, called from the beginning, may be sanctified.

I, Ezra, saw on Mount Zion a great multitude that I could not number, and they all glorified the Lord with songs. In the midst of them was a majestic youth, superior to all of them, and he placed crowns on the head of each of them and was even more exalted; I was amazed with surprise.

Then I asked the Angel: who are these, my lord?

He answered me and said: These are those who have laid aside mortal clothing and put on immortal clothing and confessed the name of God; they are now crowned and receive victory palms.

I asked: who is this young man who places crowns on them and hands them palms? He answered me: The Son of God Himself, whom they glorified in this age. And I began to praise them, who stood courageously for the name of the Lord.

Then the Angel said to me: Go and tell my people what wonderful works you have seen of the Lord God.” (3Ezra 2:40-48)

Jeremiel - Archangel of prophetic revelations.

He accompanies the souls of those who left the world with faith in the Lord to the heavenly abodes.

Archangel Jeremiel helps the lost see their sins. Special Angels obey and serve him - Angels of repentance.

Jeremiel testifies to the end of the world, when the ranks of Angels will gather on the day of the Last Judgment, but in his words there is hope for God’s mercy.

“Didn’t the souls of the righteous inquire about the same thing in their seclusions, saying: “How long will we hope in this way?” And when is the fruit of our retribution? To this Jeremiel the Archangel answered me: “When the number of the seeds in you is fulfilled, for the Most High has weighed this age in scales, and measured the times with a measure, and numbered the hours by number, and will not move or speed up until the certain measure is fulfilled” ( 3 Rides 4:35-37).

Iconographic images

Archangel Jeremiel

The Archangel is depicted as part of the Council of the Heavenly Powers. The image of Jeremiel on a separate icon is rare, in which case in his right hand there are scales, since he is destined to be present at the end of the world.

Byzantine iconography from the 11th century determined that in the center of the icon of the Council of the Ethereal Heavenly Powers there is a mirror with the face of the Lord, supported by the Archangels Gabriel and Michael. Under the feet, the defeated fallen ethereal forces are sometimes depicted, and the Heavenly Host itself appears in the form of bright winged youths.

Celebration day

Archangel Jeremiel does not have a separate day of veneration; his memory is November 8 (21), the day of the Council of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Powers. Archangels Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jehudiel, Barachiel and Jeremiel.
