Afanasyevsky Monastery

- Orthodox monastery in Yaroslavl. Founded in 1616 in memory of the liberation of Russia from the Poles during the Time of Troubles. It was closed in 1925 and returned to the Church in 2005. Restoration work is underway in the monastery, and there is a refectory.

History[edit]

The emergence of the monastery.

The Kirillo-Afanasievsky Monastery in Yaroslavl was founded in 1616 in memory of the liberation of Russia from the Poles during the Time of Troubles. During the passage of the people's militia of Minin and Pozharsky through Yaroslavl in 1612, an epidemic broke out in the city. Militia soldiers and townspeople prayed at the revered icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands, located in the chapel in Proboinsky Lane, after which the pestilence stopped. After the Poles were expelled from Russia, a decision was made to build a monastery on this site. In 1616-1628. wooden churches were built in honor of the icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands and Saints Cyril and Athanasius of Alexandria. The reason for building a temple in honor of these particular saints was due to the fact that they zealously defended Christianity from heresies; the war with Poland was viewed in Russia primarily as a struggle for the true Orthodox faith against the expansion of Catholicism. At the same time, Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich assigned a number of lands to the monastery, which provided the monastery financially.

XVII-early 20th century.

In 1691-1702. On the site of wooden churches, stone temples were built, which still exist today. At the same time, a cell building and stone walls were erected (the height of the walls is 5 meters, the width is 1 meter) to protect the monastery, located in the center of a crowded city, from worldly vanity. The walls have also been preserved to this day.

In the Spaso-Proboinskaya Church, the main chapel was consecrated in honor of the Savior Not Made by Hands, the chapel in the altar part - in the name of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called, the warm chapel in the refectory part - in the name of St. Paul of Thebes and John Kushchnik. In 1911, a southern chapel was added in the name of Saints Seraphim of Sarov and Alexander Oshevensky. In the Church of Saints Cyril and Athanasius, the warm chapel was consecrated in honor of Saint Alexis, Metropolitan. Moscow. Among the venerated shrines of the monastery were a particle of the relics of St. Kirill, Archbishop. of Alexandria, in a silver casket, the image of St. Alexia, Metropolitan Moscow in a silver robe and an antimension consecrated to St. Metropolitan Dimitry Rostovsky.

The number of monastics was small and never exceeded 10 people, thus, the Kirillo-Athanasievsky Monastery was the smallest in the diocese. At the same time, the monastery was visited by a large number of pilgrims and was highly revered by the people. Since 1895, the suffragan bishop of the Yaroslavl diocese lived here. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became a custom to hold a service here on the night of January 1 in order to celebrate the civil New Year in a Christian way, without excesses.

In 1925 the monastery was closed. The temples housed the administration of a furniture factory.

Restoration of the monastery.

In 2005, the monastery churches were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church, while the cell buildings remained under the jurisdiction of the secular organization. The monastery, however, was in a terrible state: the walls of the buildings were literally falling apart, the premises were littered with piles of garbage, and in the summer homeless people lived there and young people drank alcohol. In 2006, the Yaroslavl Theological Seminary was assigned to the monastery. Through the efforts of the rector of the seminary, Archbishop Kirill of Yaroslavl and Rostov, by 2010 it was possible to clear the monastery and restore the chapel of St. Alexis, Metropolitan. Moscow in the Cyril Athanasievsky Church. Since that time, divine services have been regularly held in the chapel, and seminarians are required to attend them. However, the monastery is still far from being completely restored.

In June 2010, right during a service, the northern wall of the monastery collapsed, and there was a group of workers next to it. No harm done.

Since September 2010, the abbot of the monastery has been Abbot Theodore, rector of the Epiphany Church in Yaroslavl. On January 29, 2011, the revered icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands, which had been there before the revolution, was returned to the monastery.

History of the foundation of the Kirillo-Afanasyevsky Monastery

Researchers have still not agreed on when the Kirillo-Afanasyevskaya monastery was founded. There are documents according to which it existed back in the 16th century. But most historians insist that the birth of the monastery dates back to 1615.

View of the monastery from Chelyuskintsev Street

The monastery is mentioned in an old text, where a church tradition about the discovery of the icon that saved Yaroslavl was recorded. In 1612, the residents of Yaroslavl suffered from a terrible epidemic of pestilence. At first, the residents of the city wanted to walk along it with the icon of the Tolga Mother of God. She, as believers believed, more than once saved the ancient city from troubles. But Archpriest Ilya, rector of the city’s Assumption Cathedral, decided to hold a religious procession with the old icon of the Savior Pantocrator, which was kept in a small wooden chapel. It was located, as the text says, near the “monastery of Athanasius and Cyril.”

After the religious procession, the epidemic stopped and the city was saved. And the picturesque image was recognized as miraculous. A new wooden church was built especially for him in just one day. Such temples in those days were called “ordinary”. That is, the old text clearly mentions an already functioning monastery.

But there is another document dated 1615. It contains a request from the head of the local zemstvo, Gabriel Myakushkin, in Rostov, addressed to Metropolitan Kirill. Residents wanted to receive a blessing to build a monastery in the place where the famous icon was found. Therefore, only one thing can be stated unequivocally: by the time of the petition, the Kirillo-Afanasyevsky Monastery in Yaroslavl already existed.

His dedication to two Orthodox saints was not accidental. These religious ascetics were revered by the church as fighters against heresy and zealots of the Orthodox faith. The beginning of the 17th century coincided in Russia with the invasion of the Polish-Lithuanian army. And in the Time of Troubles, ministers of Russian churches especially actively advocated against possible Catholic expansion.

Current state[edit]

Currently, the monastery is being actively restored.

Divine services are held in the monastery every day.

Since August 2015, the Monastic Refectory has been operating at the Kirillo-Afanasievsky Monastery. By visiting the refectory you can not only get acquainted with the traditions of Russian cuisine, but also learn about the peculiarities of the Orthodox charter. In the monastery, not only the walls are being restored, but also the ancient monastery recipes.

The refectory is located under the Spaso-Proboinsky Church. The menu offers a variety of dishes. Many of them are prepared strictly according to the recipes of the Kirillo-Athanasievsky Monastery. Also in the refectory you can taste monastery pastries, tea, coffee and sweets, as well as monastery kvass.

There is a museum at the monastery.

Architectural monuments on the monastery territory

The first stone church of Cyril and Athanasius was erected on the monastery territory in 1664. It was painted by Moscow masters. 12 years later, a warm temple was added to this church from the north, consecrated in honor of Metropolitan Alexy of Moscow.

Architecturally, the Cathedral Monastery Church is not a typical religious building for the Yaroslavl lands. This is a pillarless temple, covered with a so-called box vault, and has one dome and a blank drum. Over its long history, it has been rebuilt and modified several times. So, in the 18th century, several chapels and galleries were added to the church, and in the 30s of the 19th century, the shape of its windows was changed.

The second ancient temple on the monastery territory is the Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands, which is more often called Spaso-Proboinskaya. The two-story building with a refectory was erected at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
