The department was established in 1931 as a vicariate of the Saratov diocese.
After 1940 it was not replaced. On October 5, 2011, it was restored as an independent diocese, within the administrative boundaries of Aleksandrovo-Gaisky, Balakovsky, Dergachevsky, Dukhovnitsky, Ershovsky, Ivanteevsky, Krasnokutsky, Krasnopartizansky, Marksovsky, Novouzensky, Ozinsky, Perelyubsky, St. Petersburg, Pugachevsky, Rivne, Sovetsky, Fedorovsky and Engelsky Pokrovsk” until 1931

On October 6, 2011, the Intercession Diocese was included in the newly formed Saratov Metropolis.

Pilgrimage Service of the Intercession Diocese
With the blessing of His Eminence Pachomius, Bishop of the Intercession and Nikolaev, the Pilgrimage Service of the Intercession Diocese began its work.
The service organizes pilgrimage trips for the clergy and laity of the diocese.
Pilgrimage to holy places is one of the oldest Christian traditions. During the Soviet period, this tradition, like others, was subject to bans and persecution. The revival of pilgrimage began in the late eighties of the 20th century. The past time has shown the need to coordinate pilgrimage trips.
The pilgrimage service of the Intercession Diocese invites everyone to visit the holy places of Russia and Abroad. Vouchers can be purchased at the Orthodox Zavolzhye Church Store.
