Icon of the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael and other Ethereal Heavenly Powers

The icon “The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Powers” is the greatest Christian shrine, which represents a three-dimensional temple picture. The image is known as miraculous, possessing extraordinary power, capable of healing from illnesses and protecting from various kinds of dangers. The Feast of the Council of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Powers was established at the beginning of the 4th century and has since been celebrated annually on November 21. The celebration falls on this month, since it was previously the 9th month (starting from March, from which the year was counted in the past) and corresponded to the number of ranks in the hierarchy of heavenly inhabitants.

The emergence and meaning of the image

The iconography of the “Cathedral of the Archangel Michael and other ethereal Heavenly Powers” dates back to the 11th century. It originated in Byzantium, from where it gradually spread to other Orthodox states. The painting of icons of this type was preceded by the Council of Laodicea, which took place in 360 AD. It was decided to create the feast of the Council of the Archangel Michael, which inspired many icon painters to create real artistic masterpieces.

The religious painting depicts the mighty Army of the Lord - the archangels, praising the Creator of the visible and invisible world. Traditionally, the icon contains all the heavenly forces that will come together at the moment of the decisive battle between good and evil. The last book of the Bible, known as the Apocalypse of John the Theologian, is devoted to a description of these events.

Church life today

In 1992, the building was returned to the Lutheran community, and services in the church resumed. Today the Lutheran parish, which bears the name of St. Michael, belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria.

Since 2004, a thorough restoration of the building’s interior, as well as repairs to the facade, walls and roof, began. The renovation work was completed in 2010.

The rector of this parish, Sergei Preiman, played a significant role in the revival of the cathedral. Today the church is a real decoration of the city. It hosts divine services, interesting meetings with writers and musicians, and free organ evenings.

What does the shrine look like?

The central place of the composition is often occupied by the figure of Jesus Christ, surrounded by angelic forces. In some versions of the painting, the archangels are depicted without the Savior.

The archangel Michael is always present on the icon (the translation of his name from Hebrew is “equal to God”). He occupies a dominant position in the world, invisible to man during his lifetime. This is the heavenly commander, standing above all the angelic ranks and closest to the Lord. According to a long-standing legend, it was Michael who defeated the devil and cast him down from heaven, and subsequently became a participant in many important events mentioned in the Holy Scriptures.

Icon painters depict the archangel in different ways:

  • with a spear in one hand and a mirror in the other (the reflecting sphere, given to the archangel by the Lord himself, is a symbol of foreknowledge of future events);
  • trampling underfoot Lucifer, holding in his hand a branch of a date palm, as well as a spear, on the banner of which there is an inscription of the life-giving cross.

The archangel is often depicted as a formidable guardian of the King of Heaven, dressed in military armor, riding on a horse.

In addition to Michael, the image contains images of other archangels:

  • Archangel Gabriel (the translation of the name is “the fortress of God”), known as the messenger who notified the Virgin Mary of the birth of the Son of God, as well as of Her Dormition;
  • Archangel Raphael (“God’s healing”), who protects from diseases, unclean spirits, and helps maintain purity of thoughts;
  • Archangel Uriel (“fire of God”), instructing lost souls and enlightening the ignorant, often depicted with a flame in one hand;
  • Archangel Selaphiel (“prayer to the Lord”), tirelessly praying to God for people, appearing with his head bowed and his arms crossed on his chest.

The icon also shows the figure of the Archangel Jehudiel (“glorifying God”), holding in his hands a crown and a cane with belts (symbols of reward and punishment for earthly deeds). The picture includes Barachiel, through whom the Lord blesses believers in every endeavor, and Jerimiel, who helps people strive for good thoughts and deeds, appearing with scales in his hands.

The state of the church in Soviet times

The first significant changes affected the church in 1929, when it was given to the Russian community named after Jesus Christ and two parishes merged: Russian and German.

A difficult period for the church began in 1935, when the parish was closed. The premises were given to a sports base owned by the Kalinin plant. A little later, the building was converted into a tobacco warehouse, and then became a production workshop for the Sport enterprise. Because of this treatment, the interior of the church was badly damaged. Its internal layout was changed: the main hall was divided into 3 floors by ceilings.

What do they pray for in front of the icon?

You can pray in front of the icon “Cathedral of the Archangel Michael” in various situations. Appeal to pure heavenly forces helps:

  • protect yourself from life's adversities;
  • find a way out of a problematic situation;
  • receive healing during illness;
  • maintain mutual understanding and love in the family;
  • avoid dangers while traveling;
  • get rid of temptations and sinful thoughts;
  • learn patience, compassion, philanthropy;
  • strengthen faith in the Lord.

For many centuries, the Russian Orthodox people turned to Archangel Michael when founding a new home and when entering it, asked for support in raising children, and prayed for the deceased. The rulers read prayers in front of his icon for the preservation of the state, for protection from enemy attacks on Russian lands. In Rus', Archangel Michael has always been considered the patron saint of warriors. In front of the image of the Archangel, they pray for the protection of military personnel defending their country, for their safe return home from places of hostilities.

The icon “Cathedral of the Archangel Michael” can be seen in many Christian churches and monasteries in Russia. Images of the archangel are present in the Archangel Cathedral, located on the territory of the Moscow Kremlin. This temple was built back in the 13th century. It is known as the ancient tomb of Russian princes and tsars, a place where great rulers came to pray before important battles. The icon from the Archangel Cathedral with the deeds of the Archangel Michael is located in the main temple shrine - the four-tiered iconostasis. It includes 18 stamps with biblical events, including the struggle for the body of Moses, the archangel before Joshua, the delivery of the Apostle Peter from prison, the destruction of Sodom and others.

Modernity of the Church

Upper Oreanda with its magnificent landscapes has long attracted tourists from Yalta, artists and poets. With the advent of the temple, pilgrims also come here, because over the past years a temple complex has been formed on the church territory.

A Sunday school for studying the Law of God and a theater studio were opened here, the productions of which are staged both in the school assembly hall and in various Crimean cities. The construction of another church dedicated to St. is coming to an end. Nicholas the Wonderworker. It contains a baptistery for performing the sacrament of baptism with the possibility of complete immersion of the baptized person in water. An iconostasis was installed in St. Nicholas Church, icons and all the necessary utensils were purchased for it. Soon it will be consecrated and it will open the door for parishioners.

M.P. Karashkevich continues his charitable works. Thanks to him, a rotunda was recreated on the church grounds, which serves as an observation deck. Over time, a bronze statue of Archangel Michael was installed on its dome, the author of which was Vasily Stepanovich Vasilyuk, a sculptor and Honored Artist of Crimea.

The rotunda offers beautiful views of the sea and mountains - you can take great photos from any angle. Therefore, those who want to take pictures against the backdrop of picturesque nature and a local landmark – the temple – gather here.

Today there are two priests serving in the parish: Fr. Evgeny (Livshuk), rector, and Fr. John (Zagorulko). A male choir was created under him, the singing of which received numerous reviews. During the service, the chants can be heard even by those walking along the Royal Path. The fact is that the surrounding rocks reflect sound and create extraordinary acoustics. Consequently, the result was a kind of miraculous “concert hall”.

Birthday city

In the 12th century, Archbishop John of Novgorod founded the St. Michael the Archangel Monastery at the mouth of the Northern Dvina. For a long time it was one of the centers of the Russian North.

In 1548, by order of Tsar Ivan IV, governors Nashchokin and Zaleshanin built a fortress around the monastery in one summer. Initially it was called New Kholmogory. But already in 1596 the new city was named Arkhangelsk , after the monastery.

    Congratulations to all comrades on the holiday of Archangel Michael, Archangel of all ethereal Powers! On this day, our courageous and faithful ancestors to God, the Tsar and the Fatherland created the Union of the Russian People, which set as its main goal the cleansing of Holy Rus' from Judeo-Masons and God-fighting revolutionaries. 100 years later, many of us took part in the restoration of the Union, undertaken on the initiative of the outstanding son of Russia V.M. Klykov. I congratulate you on this memorable date and wish everyone God’s help, health, wisdom and physical and spiritual strength in our difficult, but holy and fair struggle against the dark world forces tormenting our Motherland. God is with us! Glory to Russia!

    Dear Mikhail Viktorovich! Congratulations on the Day of the Angel Archangel Michael. I wish you good health, and I wish you courage, strength of spirit, clarity and power of mind, and loyalty to our common cause. And yet, let us unite all Russians, regardless of their political beliefs, under the banner of the struggle for liberation from the Jewish yoke. It is only possible to win together. Then, without the Jews, we ourselves will figure out how to live on. In the meantime, let’s leave all disputes. Let’s all go to the fight against the occupiers. Our cause is just.

    In my congratulations to Mikhail Viktorovich, I expressed my wish to unite all Russians under the banner of the fight against the occupation regime, regardless of political views, because this regime is hated not only by supporters of Mikhail Viktorovich, but also by communists, professing the Russian Christian faith, and many others. I think it is not very far-sighted to deny Stalin when at least 50% of the population honors him. The more people gather under our banner, the more powerful our blow will be. I would like to know your opinion.

    Hearty congratulations to Mikhail Viktorovich!

    And I’ll say to Mikhail about Stalin: “It may be short-sighted, but it’s correct.” In such situations, St. John of Kronstadt instructed: “... tell the truth, even if you know that you will have a bad time for it.” We cannot follow the lead of people’s misconceptions, as soon as we lie, we will immediately lose the patronage of the Mother of God and St. Archangel Michael .

    We magnify You, holy Archangel of God Michael, and you holy archangels, angels, principalities, powers, thrones, dominions, powers, cherubs and fearsome seraphim, glorifying the Lord! Daily prayer to the Archangel of God Michael: “Archangel of God Michael, drive away from me with your lightning sword the evil spirit that tempts me. O great Archangel of God Michael, conqueror of demons! Defeat and crush all my enemies, visible and invisible, and beg the Lord Almighty to have mercy on Russia and cleanse his people from madness. He will restore the throne of the Orthodox kings, and let the beautiful symphony sound: Patriarch + Tsar. Russia will fulfill its destiny as the Third Rome. He will take away the filthy Jewish yoke and destroy all the enemies of Holy Rus'. Will save Russia from hunger, war, deadly ulcers, terrible cataclysms and unnecessary death. Amen

  27. R.B.Alexander:

    11/21/2012 at 00:00

    Father John, why did you appoint the Anointed King of God, Christ the Lord, as the chosen Patriarch of men? And what symphony are you referring to? The Russian symphony through the Anointed Tsar Ivan the Terrible is shown to us by God in the Russian Great Coat of Arms. She still sounds like an icon graphically! I don’t understand what “let the beautiful symphony sound: Patriarch + Tsar” mean?!

  28. O. John to R.B. Alexander:

    11/21/2012 at 00:00

    Was it not the patriarchs who anointed the kings to the throne? Peter I, the first to break this symphony? There is a lot that our people, who received the Soviet legacy, do not understand—madness. Therefore, the prayer clearly states that if the Patriarch-Tsar symphony is not restored, then the liberation of Russia from the Jewish yoke will remain in dreams. Many people find this prayer difficult. Well then, first pray like this: “Archangel Michael of God, drive away from me with your lightning sword the evil spirit that tempts me.”

    It is more correct to call the Black Hundreds skinheads-1905. These are drug addicts, alkanauts, people without much morality and a poor mental arsenal. By the way, the Black Hundred movement dealt the strongest blow to Russia, unlike other similar pre-revolutionary movements. It is not without reason that the world Zionists have developed both the Black Hundreds and the skinheads in their research institutes since time immemorial. Of course, you can tear your throat out by defending the pseudo-patriotism that has become fashionable lately, but the fact remains a fact. There is a seal of Cain and punishment for a nation-people who sins against God. KILL THE BLACK HUNDRED(SKINHEAD) SAVE THE NATION.

  30. R.B.Alexander:

    11/24/2012 at 00:00

    The Patriarch, as a clergyman, fulfilled his duty in the Sacrament of Confirmation for the Kingdom, and God anointed the Tsar on the Throne. In the Sacrament, the Tsar himself placed the royal crown on his head. In the Orthodox Church (including the Russian Church) there has always been a Tsar-Patriarch, and Emperor Peter the Great never violated this God-given symphony of authorities. It is obvious.

  31. O. John to R.B. Alexander:

    11/25/2012 at 00:00

    The greatness of the King's power was always supported by his anointing. Now, the Tsar-worshippers are especially zealously emphasizing this. Indeed, Orthodox Tsars are Anointed, but not in the same sense as the Old Testament ones. They were anointed with absolute power over their people both civilly and spiritually. The New Testament says nothing about the anointing of kings. This was introduced and developed by the Church and not without the knowledge of the emperors during the times of Christian freedom. Therefore, autocracy with power over the Church is a human invention, created to please the all-powerful breadwinner. Immediately, the emperors took upon themselves, with the consent of their subordinate bishops, the right to preside over the Council and appoint patriarchs. In Rus', the princes tried to stay within the symphony, but already the first Tsar, Ivan the Terrible, began to appoint metropolitans at his own discretion. Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich seeks the deposition of Patriarch Nikon, and Peter the Great finally subjugates the Church to himself, abolishing the patriarchate and creating a Senate and Synod subordinate to himself.

  32. R.B.Alexander:

    11/25/2012 at 00:00

    O. John You write “The greatness of the King’s power was always supported by his anointing.” Now, the Tsar-worshippers are especially zealously emphasizing this.” Indeed, the greatness of the King’s Power lies in its truth and legality. Indeed, in the Sacrament of Confirmation for the Kingdom, the King receives Power from God. Therefore, the Sacrament testifies that the Power of the King is True Power. Like a husband in a family, so a King in a country is a natural, God-given Master and Father, His Power is sacred and similar to the Power of the King of Heaven. Therefore, every legitimate husband in the family and the Anointed King of God in the State of God’s Chosen People and the Orthodox Church is a living icon of our Lord and God Jesus Christ. And the “kings” are, obviously, those who love the Father and naturally recognize His Authority. In this sense, probably, all Angels in the Kingdom of Heaven are kings. O. John, if “unique power with power over the Church is a human invention, created to please the all-powerful breadwinner,” then how should we understand the power of the husband in the family? Is this also a fabrication? But everyone knows that the husband does not need to take power in the family, it was given to him naturally by God. The husband is the master in all family matters and only he is the father. The father (and only he) can gather the family for an important meeting; he can expose any family member and point out his mistakes. The husband loves his wife to the point of jealousy and will not tolerate from her not only fornication, but even unworthy flirting. The Father's word in the family is always with power and love. The father is also the guarantor of all family decisions. Where are the fabrications here? He who does not love the King does not love God. No one can change the God-given image of the symphony of authorities (see the Russian Great Coat of Arms). Any change is a lie, and a lie is always temporary, i.e. distorts the Truth until the time God allows. God confirm the Holy Orthodox Faith!

  33. O. John:

    11/25/2012 at 00:00

    The symphony of ecclesiastical and civil authorities was established with the adoption of Christianity by Emperor Constantine and the declaration of the Church as free. Emperor Justinian legitimized it in the 6th novella: “The greatest gifts of God, given to people by the highest love for mankind, are the priesthood and the kingdom. The first serves divine affairs, the second takes care of human affairs. Both come from the same source and adorn human life. Therefore, kings care most of all about the piety of the clergy, who, for their part, constantly pray to God for them. When the priesthood is blameless, and the kingdom exercises only legal authority, there will be good agreement between them and everything that is good and useful will be given to humanity.” The essence of the symphony is outlined even more clearly by Emperor John Comnenus in a letter to Pope Honorius in the 12th century: “I recognized two subjects in the continuation of my reign as completely different from one another: one is spiritual power, which is from the Great and Most High High Priest, the Prince of Peace, who according to by divine right, they received the power to bind and decide all people. And the other subject is worldly power, power addressed, addressed to the temporal according to the divine word: render to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar, the power contained in the sphere that belongs to it. These two powers that dominate the world, although separate and different, act for mutual benefit in a harmonious combination, helping and replenishing each other. They can be compared to the two sisters - Martha and Mary, who are told about in the Gospel. From the harmonious discovery of these two powers comes the common good, and from their hostile relations comes a great sin” (A.P. Lebedev, “History of Byzantium”, p. 416).

  34. R.B.Alexander:

    11/30/2012 at 00:00

    Consider the visible and understand the invisible, - this is what the Holy Fathers of the Orthodox Church teach us, - and have Faith. God is always and everywhere and in everything. Everything flows before our eyes and everything changes in this world, but the Truth of God reigns forever and the Law of God is the Pillar and Establishment of the entire Universe, and everything has its time. Husband from wife and wife through husband (this is visible), but the head of the wife is the husband (this is the invisible law of God). Let's take an example from the Sacrament of Marriage. In this Sacrament, the Lord blesses the small Kingdom through His servant - the clergyman. In this small Kingdom, the husband receives the legal Authority of the Master and Father from God, and not from the priest. He does not need to prove, assert, or win this Power from the wife and children whom God gave him. The legitimate Power of a husband is always natural and sacred, i.e. God given. In a family where the Law of God is not violated, God rules through the husband. In such a family, Love and Truth reign, there is a hierarchy of Power established by God (from the husband, the Master and Father, to the wife and children), there is no struggle of authorities, and the members of this family prosper. This is probably what the holy Emperor Justinian wrote about.

  35. R.B.Alexander:

    11/30/2012 at 00:00

    There is one Lord, one Faith and one Baptism. Just as the Lord cannot be divided, so His Power is one and indivisible, and the earthly Kingdom of God’s Chosen Russian People is an icon of the Kingdom of Heaven. True power in the world, both spiritual and lordly, is light from Light. That is why the Holy Apostle said, “There is no Authority but from God,” i.e. in the small Kingdom through her husband, and in the large Kingdom through the Anointed One of God, the Autocratic King. Without a true husband and without a true King, anti-power reigns in both the family and the State. What was not revealed to the Emperors of the Second Rome, the Lord God revealed to the saints and faithful Kings and Emperors of the Third Rome. Some sow and others reap, but both sowing and reaping are from the Lord, and all who have labored for the glory of God will rejoice. The doctrine of Royal Power received its completion through the Anointed One of God, Tsar Ivan the Terrible. It was through this King that God showed us what true Power is and what there is a true symphony of powers. Our ancestors understood this well in the Time of Troubles, and left us the Russian Testament - the Council Oath of 1613 for the Russian family. And all the Russian Tsars sacredly observed this Covenant - to preserve the Royal Power of the Anointed of God from the Romanov family until the second and glorious coming of our Lord and God Jesus Christ!

    to accept the Royal Power of the Anointed of God from the Romanov family was and remains a crime. The Romanovs did not baptize Rus', but “electing a king” is like modern presidential elections? Horrible... 400 skillfully compost brains, there is no end in sight. The state of Rus' is a form of cohabitation of one family of the Rurik princes, which is the historical owner of this state, its empirical personification, and, most importantly, the ideal form of existence of this state. So, the foundation on which it is built and Rus' functions is formed precisely around the metaphor of the family - as an indivisible body, the property of the clan and the only “corporation” of the Rurikovichs.

    The princely family, therefore, exists not only empirically, it has metaphysical integrity. Just as present times are a kind of repetition of the past, so living princes are a restoration, “revival” of dead ancestors.

    The princely family is beyond ordinary dimensions; it exists in eternity.

    Russia is ruled not by a specific prince, not even by a collection of living relatives, but by an endless series of generations spread out over time (just as in the past). As Metropolitan Nikephoros reminded Monomakh: “You will continue to rule for generations and generations.”

    When patronage for the land, the state belongs to the entire set of generations of the dynasty - past, present and future, then princely holiness automatically belongs to the sacred family of the Rurik princes - the Baptists of Rus'. https://russkiev.wordpress.com/concept-russkiev/

Description of the holy image

The Bible does not clearly indicate when exactly the Angels were created, but most of the holy fathers indicate that they appeared before Adam, as representatives of the spiritual sphere. Being incorporeal beings, angels have something in common with humans - free will. Only, unlike humans, angels are unable to betray God if they have once chosen obedience. They can also become visible to people in order to convey God's will to them.

How did people dare to depict something that is invisible to their eyes and incomprehensible to their minds? God Himself gave the blessing for the depiction of heavenly creatures back in the Old Testament; this is a very ancient tradition. The images of angels are not portraits, but symbolic representations of their nature and abilities.

According to Blessed Theodoret, angels appear to people in a form that they are able to perceive and not be afraid. But the appearance should also indicate that the person is facing God’s messenger. The heavenly inhabitants are represented in similar ways in the images. You can recognize the icon of Archangel Michael by the description of the main angelic attributes:

  • wings - symbolize speed, the ability to penetrate through space;
  • halo - holiness;
  • dolmatica (mantle) - blue or white, sometimes gold;
  • himation (cloak) - red;
  • staff - indicates the role of a messenger;
  • toroka (ribbon used to tie hair) - a sign of obedience to the Lord;
  • the appearance of a handsome young man speaks of the perfection of angelic nature.

There is also a mirror that Archangel Michael can hold in his hands - this is a sign of foresight. If in doubt, any icon can always be identified by its name, which is written next to the image, above or below it.

Angels

In the Christian religion, angels are only messengers of the will of God. They can only convey it to people, appearing to them in different forms or pushing them to the necessary and correct decision.

Angels represent either beings or souls with superpowers. They do not have a specific gender. Each of them has wings.

According to the New Testament, the saints in heaven have a specific hierarchy of nine stations. For disobedience to the will of their elders, they can be exiled or fold their wings, becoming fallen.

Angels are called to protect God and, if necessary, can become an army for protection. In honor of each of them there are holidays of the Russian Orthodox Church.

There are angels in almost every world religion. In Islam, for example, these are one of the central characters.

The leader of the army of God in Christianity is considered to be Archangel Michael.

Who are the archangels

Archangels have superhuman abilities and belong to one of the 9 angelic ranks. Their direct responsibility is to carry out the Lord’s instructions. The clergy puts forward theories that angels were created long before the material world. Each of them has its own personality and name. The most ancient creatures act as intermediaries between the earthly and heavenly worlds, and also convey the will of the Lord to mere mortals.

In the Orthodox world, the image of Archangel Michael is especially revered

HEAVENLY POWERLESS

At the beginning of the 4th century, several years before the First Ecumenical Council, the Council of Laodicea was convened, at which Orthodox veneration of angels was established.

Angel means “messenger” in Greek. Through them, God conveys his will, they also intercede with the Lord on behalf of people. Some angels have the prefix “archi” in front, which indicates their higher position compared to other angels.

On the day of remembrance of the ethereal forces, the archangels are glorified: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Yehudiel, Barachiel and Jeremiel. The most important and famous of them is Archangel Michael.

The angelic ranks have three hierarchies - highest, middle and lowest. There are three ranks in each hierarchy. Higher hierarchy: Seraphim, Cherubim and Thrones.

Flaming and Fiery six-winged Seraphim . They stand closest to the Holy Trinity and motivate everyone with love for God. The name Cherubim (Gen. 3:24) means the outpouring of wisdom and enlightenment. It is through them, to whom the secrets of God are revealed, that enlightenment for true knowledge of God is transmitted. The Thrones (Col. 1:16), following the Cherubim, mysteriously and incomprehensibly bearing God, serve the justice of God.

The average Angelic hierarchy is the Dominions, Powers and Powers.

Dominions (Col. 1:16) are the rulers of the ranks of Angels that follow them. Their role is to instruct the earthly rulers of wisdom appointed by God. Dominations teach mastery of feelings, taming sinful desires and temptations, and control of one’s will.

The powers (1 Pet. 3:22) are the executors of God's will. They are given the power to work miracles; they impart the grace of miracles and clairvoyance to the saints of God. Forces help people in their obedience; they help strengthen their faith.

Authorities (1 Pet. 3:22; Col. 1:16) are people’s helpers in taming satanic temptations and in the fight against evil thoughts; they confirm ascetics and protect them.

The lowest hierarchy is the Principalities, Archangels and Angels.

Principalities (Col. 1:16) - they have lower angels subordinate to them, whom they direct to fulfill the Divine will. It is they who rule the world, countries, peoples. They began to instruct and teach people to give honor to everyone according to his rank. Of people. Those who are endowed with power are directed to the idea of performing their duties not for personal gain, but for the glory of God and the benefit of people.

Archangels (1 Sol. 4:16) - they are the good news about glorious events, they help to understand the will of God, with their help the holy faith is strengthened.

Angels (1 Pet. 3:22) are the closest incorporeal forces to people, who instruct us towards holiness and virtue, support people when they fall, and help them get up when they fall. Angels are always with us, they are always ready to help, if we, of course, want this.

WHAT DO THE ARCHANGELS HELP WITH?

Archangels help people in the battle against evil and troubles. By turning to Archangel Michael or other archangels in prayer, you can be sure that it will be heard.

Archangel Michael is revered as the patron saint of warriors. He is the protector of Christians from various evils and the actions of evil spirits. Prayers to the Archangel promote healing from illnesses; they pray to him during the construction and consecration of a house. Archangel Michael is a reliable protector in a dream, and also protects the souls of the dead on the way to the Throne. You can pray to him in absolutely all everyday issues, if the prayer is sincere, help will definitely come. The morning and evening prayer rules include prayers to the angel. They, of course, need to be read daily. But besides reading, first of all, you need to eliminate guile, theft, laziness, anger and other serious sins from your life. Start correcting your life yourself, then it will be much easier for the angels and saints to help you in your prayers.

It must be remembered that icons or saints do not “specialize” in any specific areas. It will be right when a person turns with faith in the power of God, and not in the power of this icon, this saint or prayer. Which saints and who should we pray to on different occasions and why our prayers remain unanswered.

COUNCIL OF ARCHANGELS LEADERSHED BY THE ARCHISTRATIUS MICHAEL

On November 21 (8th Old Style), the Orthodox Church established the holiday of glorification of the archangels Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selafiel, Yehudiel, Barachiel and Jeremiel.

On the icons the Archangels are depicted in accordance with the type of their ministry:

Archangel Michael - “Who is like God” - this is the translation from the Hebrew of this name. Much has been written about this holy angel in both the Old and New Testaments. He is considered a “prince,” “leader of the Lord’s army,” the main fighter against the devil and his wiles. After the uprising of the fallen angels led by Satan, the Archangel Michael was the first to enter into battle with them, and from that time on he received the title of “archangel” - senior warrior.

“And there was war in Heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought against them, but they did not stand, and no place was found for them in Heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, the ancient serpent, called the devil and Satan.”

The Apostle Jude briefly mentions the Archangel Michael as an adversary of the devil. (Josh. 5, 13; Dan. 10; 12, 1; Jude 9; Rev. 12, 7-9; Luke 10, 18).

The Church reveres Archangel Michael as a defender of the faith and a fighter against heresies and all evil. On icons he is depicted with a fiery sword in his hand, or with a spear casting down the devil.

Archangel Gabriel . From Hebrew - man of God, and in Russian, Fortress of God or Power of God. One of the highest angels appears in the Old and New Testaments as the bearer of joyful tidings. He announces to the priest Zechariah in the temple about the birth of John the Baptist, to the Ever-Virgin in Nazareth - about the birth of the Savior of the world. According to the Bible, he is considered the guardian angel of the chosen people. On icons he is depicted with a branch of paradise, which he brought to the Blessed Virgin, or with a luminous lantern in his right hand and a jasper mirror in his left.

Archangel Raphael - in Aramaic means Healing of God or Healing of God. He is a healer of human ailments. In the “Book of Tobit”[8] of the Holy Scriptures, it is described how the Archangel Raphael, in the form of a young man, helped the righteous Tobiah, he protected him from misfortunes on the way, freed Sarah, the daughter of Raguil, from the evil spirit of Asmodeus, gave her as a wife to Tobiah, his son Tobitov, removed the thorn from Tobit (Tov.3, 16-17; 5.4-6; 6.8-9; 7.2-3; 11, 6-7, 10-13; 12, 6-7; 14 , 15, 18). With the help of the fish that Tobias caught in the Tigris River, evil spirits were driven out, and with its bile Tobias, on the advice of Raphael, restored his father’s sight. On the icon, Saint Archangel Raphael, the physician of human ailments, is depicted holding in his left hand a vessel (alavaster) with medicinal means (medicine), and in his right hand a pod, that is, a clipped bird feather for anointing wounds.”

Archangel Uriel is the fire or light of God, the enlightener. According to the Tradition of the Orthodox Christian Church, Saint Archangel Uriel was appointed by God to guard Paradise after the Fall and the expulsion of Adam. According to the teachings of the Holy Fathers, Archangel Uriel, being the radiance of the divine fire, is the enlightener of the darkened, unbelievers and ignorant. And the very name of the Archangel, corresponding to his special ministry, means Fire of God or Light of God. Archangel Uriel was sent by the Lord to Ezra (3 Ezra 4:1-50; 5) and predicted the Savior’s imminent coming to the people. This was about 500 years before the birth of Christ. According to the iconographic canon of the Orthodox Church, Saint Archangel Uriel is depicted holding a naked sword in his right hand against his chest, and a fiery flame in his left.

Archangel Selaphiel is God’s prayer book, encouraging people to pray. In the icon, the Holy Archangel Salafiel, a man of prayer who always prays to God for people and incites people to prayer, is depicted with his face and eyes bowed (lowered) down, and his hands pressed (folded) with a cross on his chest, as if tenderly praying. He shows us an example of how to pray to the Lord God correctly. “And so the Lord gave us a whole host of prayer angels, with their leader Salafiel,” writes Bishop Innocent of Kherson, “so that with the pure breath of their lips they would warm our cold hearts to prayer, so that they would admonish us when and how to pray, so that they would offer our very offerings to the throne of grace. When you see, brethren, on the icon the Archangel standing in a position of prayer, with his eyes downcast, with his hands reverently placed on his chest (chest), then know that this is Salafiel.” (Cit. cit., pp. 11-12).

Archangel Yehudiel - translated into Russian, his name means the Glorifier of God or the Praise of God. He really, as the inscription on the fresco of the Annunciation Cathedral says, “has the ministry of establishing people who work in something, for the glory of God, to intercede for them reward.” Archangel Jehudiel is considered the patron saint of monastics and, in general, of all who work for the glory of God. He is an intercessor and assistant for these people in their affairs. The Holy Tradition indicates that the Holy Archangel Jehudiel is one of the seven Archangels, who, according to the Command of God, patronized the Israelites on their journey during their 40-year wandering, and the name Jehudiel is also given to that Angel who preceded the Israelites in a pillar of fire and cloud upon their exit from Egypt, protecting them from pursuers (Exodus 14:19-20). God sent the archangel Jehudiel to help Moses and his people: “Behold, I am sending My angel before you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared for you; watch yourself before His face and listen to His voice; do not persist against Him, because He will not forgive your sin, for My name is in Him” (Exodus 23:20-21) The Archangel of God Jehudiel is depicted holding a golden crown in his right hand, as a reward from God for useful and pious works to holy people , and in the left hand there is a scourge of three black ropes with three ends, as a punishment for sinners for laziness in pious labors.

Archangel Barachiel - translated, his name means Blessing of God”, conveys God’s blessings for good deeds, he asks people for God’s mercy. On the icon, the holy Archangel Barachiel, the dispenser of God's blessings and intercessor, asking for God's benefits to us: is depicted carrying white roses on his chest on his clothes, as if rewarding, by the command of God, for the prayers, works and moral behavior of people and foretelling bliss and endless peace in the Kingdom of Heaven . These white roses mean God's blessing. The Lord, through Archangel Barachiel, sends his blessing to various good deeds and activities. But this only happens when people themselves want to do godly deeds. For example, people expect a good harvest not only in order to sell it and earn money, but in order to give part of this harvest to decorate a temple, to charity, or to share with the poor. Otherwise, Archangel Barachiel will not bring a blessing.

Archangel Jeremiel - The name of the holy Archangel Jeremiel means in Russian the Height of God or the Exaltation of God. He is sent from above from God to man in order to promote the elevation and return of man to God. The Archangel of God not only reveals the gloomy prospect of the sinful world, they say, the further, the worse, but also helps to see the holy seeds of eternal life in a dying world. (see John 12:24). He is depicted holding scales in his right hand.

SOME MIRACLES OF THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL

Description of some miracles associated with the name of Archangel Michael:

Miracle in Khoneh

According to legend, near Hierapolis, which is located in Phrygia, there was a spring, with the waters of which the daughter of one of the inhabitants was healed of dumbness. At night, the Archangel Michael himself appeared to the father of this girl and said that his daughter needed to drink water from the source and she would be able to speak. And so it happened - the girl drank the water and regained her speech. Seeing such a miracle, the whole family of this man was baptized (before that they were not Christians) and, in gratitude to such a miracle of God, the happy father built a temple near the source in honor of the Holy Archangel Michael.

After this, many healings occurred from the source not only of Christians, but also of pagans, who, thanks to such miracles, were baptized and converted to the faith of Christ. During the times of Christian persecution, the Monk Archippus of Herotopus served at this temple for 60 years. He was a good preacher and greatly irritated the pagan rulers with his pious life. According to his works, many pagans converted to Christianity. To destroy the church and destroy Archippus, the pagans connected two rivers and directed the water towards the temple. But through the prayers of Saint Archippus, Archangel Michael came to their aid, who hit the mountain with his staff, a large gap formed in it, where streams of water went. The temple was saved. This miracle was called the “Miracle of Khoneh.” Khona – means “hole”, “cleft”.

Plague in Rome

During the plague in Rome in 590, Pope Gregory the Great held a prayer service and during the procession he saw the Holy Archangel Michael at the top of the Mausoleum of Hadrian, who sheathed his sword, symbolizing the end of the battle with the scourge. After this, the epidemic began to recede. A statue of the Archangel Michael was placed on top of this mausoleum, and in the tenth century this mausoleum became the Castle of the Holy Angel.

Rescue of Sipontus , an Italian city from a siege by Germanic tribes in 630. By the will of God and the help of Archangel Michael, a terrible thunder began, and a fiery cloud formed, in which lightning flashed. This cloud rushed towards the attackers, who fled from it.

The salvation of Novgorod from the invasion of Khan Batu in 1239 occurred due to the fact that Archangel Michael appeared to the khan and forbade him to fight with Novgorod.

Joan of Arc from childhood. It was with his help that the British were defeated at Orleans. Without the help of the archangel and other heavenly forces, the troops of the Maid of Orleans could not have won this victory.

Many descriptions have been preserved that the Archangel Michael provided assistance to the inhabitants of the Aegean coast during pirate times. Only prayers to the holy military leader helped people avoid the fate of being killed, robbed or driven into slavery.

GREATNESS

We magnify you, Archangels, and Angels and all the Hosts, Cherubim and Seraphim, glorifying the Lord.

A little history

The construction of the church began in 1583 by Albrecht the Fifth the Magnanimous, and was completed by his heir William the Fifth. The costs of construction and internal improvement were so high that they almost emptied the royal treasury. The situation was aggravated by the decades-long religious war between Catholics and Protestants and the plague that raged across Bavaria. All the desperate townspeople wanted was to find peace and protection. Unexpected salvation came in the person of Elector Maximilian, a politician and financier with traditional Catholic views. He brought a golden chest with the relics of Saints Cosmas and Damian to Munich from Bremen, after which a real miracle happened - the “Black Death” subsided, and mutual attacks and clashes between churchmen temporarily ceased. For four and a half centuries, St. Michael's Church became the center of Catholicism.

The church was almost completely destroyed during Allied air raids on Munich during the Second World War. In peacetime, the temple was restored, but most of the religious and historical values stored in the church were lost in the fire. The identity of the particles of the preserved relics can never be restored.

Where to place the icon in the house

The location of the icon depends on its size, since there are no specific prohibitions in Orthodoxy for the location of the holy image. The main criterion is a person’s motivation to read the prayer. You need to choose an icon by listening to your inner voice. He will tell you which of them the person has a soul for. Most often, the face of Archangel Michael is placed on the iconostasis, the main thing is that the icon of the Savior is in the center. A lamp is placed in front of the holy image, into which church oil is poured and lit during prayer.

Why did the church create the holiday?

This holiday was established, first of all, not in order to honor the saints, but in order to distinguish between divine power and angelic power.

According to the church, angels are more like people, have human likenesses. According to the Old Testament, they could descend to earth and live with the living. From alliances with messengers, Nephilim appeared - half-humans, half-angels.

Seraphim, according to church beliefs, just like people, pray to God, ask him for forgiveness and faithfully serve him. On the icon “The Cathedral of the Archangel Michael,” the angels continue, kneeling, to cry out to their Creator.
