He was found shot not far from the temple. The life feat of this man was completed by a terrible death. His relics were found in 1992.

The Tambov diocese was founded in 1682 by decree of Tsar Fyodor Alekseevich

The diocese was founded in 1682 by decree of Tsar Fyodor Alekseevich. This happened under Patriarch Joachim. At the very beginning of the creation of the diocese, it included the following cities: Tambov, Kozlov, Borisoglebsk.

It was believed that at the end of the 17th century the Tambov diocese played a large role in strengthening Orthodoxy in the Don. Temples and monasteries were built in many places.

In 1700 the diocese was closed. What remained was given into the possession of the Ryazan diocese. Then to the Voronezh diocese. In 1723, the Tambov diocese was transferred to the Moscow Synodal Office.

But it was very difficult to manage such a diocese from a distance, so they began to raise the question of the diocese becoming independent again.

DIOCESE OF TAMBOV

E PARCHY OF TAMBOV Russian Orthodox Church, an ecclesiastical administrative territorial unit headed by a bishop. Founded in 1682, abolished in 1700, founded again in 1758. It united parishes and monasteries in the territory of the Tambov province, since 1943 - the region, since December 2012 - Tambov, Rasskazovsky, Bondarsky, Pichaevsky, Znamensky, Tokarevsky, Mordovian and Sampursky districts of Tambov areas. Since 2012 it has been part of the Tambov Metropolis. Cathedral city - Tambov. Cathedral - Spaso-Preobrazhensky. The administrator of the diocese is Theodosius (Vasnev), Metropolitan of Tambov and Rasskazovsky.

Founded in 1682 by decree of Tsar Fyodor Alekseevich under Patriarch Joachim. Included were the cities of Tambov, Kozlov, Borisoglebsk with 160 churches in them and their surroundings. In the 17th century, it played an important role in the spread and strengthening of Orthodoxy on the southern outskirts of the Russian state. Bishop Pitirim (1685–1698) made a significant contribution. In 1700 it was closed and came under the jurisdiction of the Ryazan diocese, from 1720 - to the Voronezh diocese, from 1723 - to the Moscow Synodal Office. In 1758 it was restored by decree of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna with the inclusion of the cities of Dobry, Krasnoslobodsk, Temnikov, Kerensk, Narovchat, Verkhniy and Nizhny Lomov, Troitsk, Korsun. Since 1764, after the borders were changed, they included Tambov, Kozlov, Penza, Borisoglebsk, Dobry, Kerensk, Nizhny and Verkhny Lomov, Insar, Mokshansk, Krasnoslobodsk. In 1779, Temnikov, Narovchat, Saransk, Troitsk, Morshansk, Spassk, Kirsanov, Ranenburg, Serdobsk, Kuznetsk, and Chembar were added to them. It remained within these borders (22 cities with a district) until 1799, when its territory was brought into line with the boundaries of the Tambov province created in 1796. The borders of the Tambov diocese were finally established by 1803 and did not go beyond the borders of the Tambov province (Tambov, Borisoglebsky, Usmansky, Kozlovsky, Lipetsk, Lebedyansky, Shatsky, Morshansky, Elatomsky, Temnikovsky, Spassky, Kirsanovsky districts).

At the end of the 18th–19th centuries. a network of religious educational institutions has been created that have increased the educational level of the clergy. In 1861, Saint Theophan the Recluse (Bishop of Tambov) founded the periodical “Tambov Diocesan Gazette”. In 1914, celebrations were held in Tambov on the occasion of the canonization of Saint Pitirim, Bishop of Tambov, the Wonderworker. In 1911 the diocese was divided into 59 deanery districts. It had 1,175 parishes, 11 men's and 12 women's monasteries, 4 women's communities.

With the establishment of Soviet power in the Tambov province in 1918, persecution of the Church began. Despite the protests of believers, church relics and valuables were confiscated, churches and monasteries were closed and destroyed, clergy, monastics and lay people were persecuted. According to 2011 data, in 1935–1941, 368 clergy were repressed, of which 199 were shot. In the 1930s, the diocese was practically destroyed. Since the 1990s, a search has been conducted for the names of those who suffered for their faith in Christ, and new martyrs are venerated. A worship cross was erected in the Kazan Monastery in memory of the victims of repression.

The revival of diocesan life began in 1943 with the opening of the Intercession Cathedral in Tambov (see: Church of the Intercession), which remained the only one operating in the city until 1993. The revival of the diocese is associated with the activities of Archbishop Luke (1944–1946) and Joasaph (1946–1961). The most severe post-war attack by the authorities on the Church took place in the late 1950s and 1960s. In the 1940s–1960s, more than 300 ancient churches were destroyed or converted for secular purposes - no less than in the 1920s. Church life was preserved. In terms of the number of religious rituals performed in the 1960s, the level of religiosity of the population there was one of the highest in the country. In 1964, 53.6% of those born were baptized, 4.6% of married couples were married, and 24.5% of those who died were buried according to church rites. In the 1970s and 1980s, the authorities became more loyal to the Church. On the eve of the celebration in Tambov in 1988 of the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus', at the request of Archbishop Eugene (Zhdan) (1987–2002), the relics of St. Pitirim were transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church and placed in the renovated Intercession Cathedral.

The newest stage in the history of the diocese began in the 1990s. In 1993, the Transfiguration Cathedral was returned to her, to which, during the first visit to the Tambov diocese of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Alexy II, the relics of St. Pitirim were solemnly transferred from the Intercession Cathedral. Since the beginning of the 21st century. under Bishop Feodosius (Vasnev) (2002 - present, from 2013 - Metropolitan of Tambov and Rasskazovsky), there is an active restoration of transferred church property and new construction of temple and monastery architectural complexes. In 2005, the discovery of the holy relics of St. Martha of Tambov took place.

On December 26, 2012, by decision of the Holy Synod, the Tambov Metropolis was formed, including the Tambov and Rasskazovskaya, Michurinskaya and Morshanskaya, Uvarovskaya and Kirsanovskaya dioceses. In 2014, the First Hierarchal visit of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus' took place to the Tambov Metropolis to participate in the celebrations on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the canonization of St. Pitirim of Tambov, the Wonderworker.

In 2021, the Tambov diocese was divided into 10 dean districts: Bondarsky, Znamensky, Mordovian, Pichaevsky, Rasskazovsky, Sampursky, Tambov City, Tambov I, Tambov II, Tokarevsky. It has 100 priests and 8 deacons; 78 parishes and 7 bishop's farmsteads, 27 ascribed churches. 30 monuments of church architecture, which are objects of cultural heritage, have been restored. 24 temples under construction. Pitirim Tambovsky built the cathedral of the city of Tambov

    Brief life of Saint Pitirim

It is worth paying attention to one of the ruling bishops of the city of Tambov - Pitirim, who ruled the Tambov diocese for a long time. This man paid great attention to the arrangement of monasteries and temples.

He held the Tambov diocese for a very long time. This man was glorified among the saints. His memorial day is celebrated on August 4, August 10.

It is this saint who is credited with the construction of the stone cathedral in the city of Tambov. Currently, the Transfiguration Cathedral houses the relics of St. Pitirim.

The construction of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral dates back to 1636

At first the temple was purely wooden. Its construction dates back to 1636. It is believed that the temple was built in just 3 months. The holiday was consecrated in 1636 on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord.

    1636

this year, in just 3 months, the Transfiguration Cathedral was built

Priest Mokiy Pozdnyakov was the first rector of the temple. The temple received the status of a cathedral in 1677 by Metropolitan Hilarion of Ryazan. At that time, the temple staff was quite large.

This is how the Transfiguration Cathedral in the city of Tambov currently looks like. Photo: s4.fotokto.ru

In 1682, one bishop was replaced by another - Bishop Leonty. The first thing he did was to cast bells for the bell tower. The new era began from the moment Bishop Pitirim, discussed above, arrived at the temple.

It was he who built the stone Transfiguration Cathedral, which was located not far from the old one. Construction of the cathedral began in 1694.

But, without waiting for its final construction, Pitirim consecrated one of the chapels in the temple in honor of St. Nicholas. It was in this chapel that he himself was later buried.

After the death of Pitirim, the cathedral remained unfinished for a long time. They said that there were no materials for its construction. In 1738, priest Alexander Ulanov was able to find funds to restore the building.

    1738

this year priest Alexander Ulanov found funds for the restoration of the Transfiguration Cathedral

But after the death of the priest, it remained unfinished. In 1758, Bishop Pachomius came and found the temple in a very sad state.

By the age of 80, the wooden part of the second floor was severely lopsided. Then Bishop Theodosius began to seek help from local residents. One of the merchants began rebuilding the temple. In 1809, they began to look for funds to build a stone bell tower of the cathedral along with the old wooden one. By 1811 the foundation had been laid.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Emperor Nicholas II and John of Kronstadt visited the cathedral

All repair work on the construction of the cathedral and bell tower was completed in 1783. It is worth noting that at the beginning of the 20th century, the cathedral was visited by Emperor Nicholas II himself and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna. The well-known holy righteous John of Kronstadt also visited the cathedral.

Since 1929, the cathedral building began to house a museum. The bell tower was dismantled. At the same time, the cathedral was taken under state protection as a monument. In 1991, they began to think about restoring the shrine.

The main dome was raised, and the relics of St. Pitirim were returned. In 1993, the cathedral was returned to the care of the Tambov diocese. In 1994, a religious community was registered. The bell tower was also recreated from photographs from previous years.
