Psalm 16 .
Hear, O Lord, my truth, attend to my prayer, inspire my prayer not in flattering lips. From Your presence my destiny will come, let my eyes see righteousness. You have tempted my heart, you have visited me at night, you have tempted me, and iniquity is not found in me. For let not my mouth speak of the deeds of men; for the words of Thy lips I have preserved the ways of cruelty. Make my steps in Your paths, so that my steps may not move. I cried out, for Thou hast heard me, O God, incline Thy ear to me and hear my words. Surprise Your mercy, save those who trust in You from those who resist Your right hand. Save me, Lord, like the apple of your eye; cover me with the shelter of your wing, from the face of the wicked who have made me angry. Defeat my soul; you have shut up your fat, your lips have spoken pride. Those who cast me out have now passed me by, casting their eyes upon the earth. Having embraced me like a lion ready to catch and like a skimen who dwells in secret. Rise up, Lord, I will precede and praise them; Deliver my soul from the wicked, Thy weapon from the enemy of Thy hand. Lord, from the little ones of the earth, I have divided them in their bellies, and their belly is filled with Your hidden ones. She was satisfied with her sons, and left the remains of her children. But I will appear before Your face with righteousness, I will be satisfied, and I will always show Your glory to me.
.
Psalm 24 .
To You, Lord, I have lifted up my soul. My God, I have trusted in You, may I never be ashamed, may my enemies dare to attack me. For all those who endure You will not be ashamed. Let the wicked be ashamed in vain. Tell me Your ways, O Lord, and teach me Your paths. Guide me into Your truth and teach me; for You are my God, my Savior, and I have endured You all day. Remember Your mercies, O Lord, and Your mercies, as they have been since the ages. The sin of my youth, and do not remember my ignorance; according to Thy mercy, remember me, for the sake of Thy goodness, O Lord. The Lord is good and right; for this reason He will give law to those who sin along the way. He will guide the meek in judgment, He will teach the meek in His way. All the ways of the Lord are mercy and truth, to those who seek His covenant and His testimony. For the sake of Your name, Lord, and cleanse my sin, there is much. Who is the man who fears the Lord? He will put the law in his way, as he pleases. His soul will dwell in the good, and his seed will inherit the earth. The Lord is the power of those who fear Him, and He will show His covenant to them. I will lift up my eyes to the Lord, for He will pluck my eyes from the snare. Look upon me and have mercy on me, for I am the only begotten and the poor. The sorrows of my heart have increased, deliver me from my needs. See my humility and my work, and forgive all my sins. Behold, my enemies have multiplied, and they hate me with unrighteous hatred. Save my soul and deliver me, so that I will not be ashamed, because I trusted in You. I cling to me in kindness and righteousness, for I have suffered Thee, O Lord. Deliver, O God, Israel from all their sorrows.
.
Psalm 50 .
Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity and bear away my sin before me. I have sinned against You alone, and I have done evil before You, so that You may be justified in Your words and overcome, never judge You. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. You have loved the truth; you have revealed to me the unknown and secret wisdom of Yours. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my hearing; humble bones will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me with the joy of Your salvation, and strengthen me with the Master’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; My tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had wanted sacrifices, you would have given burnt offerings, but you would not have been pleased. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a contrite and humble heart, God will not despise. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then favor the sacrifice of righteousness, the offering and the burnt offering; Then they will place the bullock on Your altar.

Psalm 53 .
God, in Your name save me, and in Your power judge me. God, hear my prayer, inspire the words of my mouth. As if strangers rose up against me and were strong, they sought my soul, and did not offer God before them. Behold, God helps me, and the Lord is the Protector of my soul. Evil will turn away my enemy; consume them with Thy truth. I will devour You with my will; let us confess to Your name, O Lord, that it is good. For you have delivered me from all sorrow, and my eye has looked upon my enemies.
.
Psalm 54 .
Inspire my prayer, O God, and do not despise my prayer. Listen to me and hear me; I was grieved by my sorrow and was shaken by the voice of the enemy and by the sinner’s oppression. As if I turned away iniquity and enmity against me in anger. My heart is in turmoil and the fear of death attacks me. Fear and trembling came upon me and darkness covered me. And he asked: who will give me a krill like a dove, and I will fly and rest? He went away running and settled in the desert. I hope for God, who saves me from cowardice and from the storm. Flood, O Lord, and divide their tongues, for you have seen lawlessness and strife in the city. Day and night he will walk along its walls; lawlessness and labor in the midst of it and unrighteousness; and his wealth and flattery did not fail. As if the enemy had reviled me, I would have suffered slaughter; and even if he hated me, he would have spoken at me, I would have hidden from him. But you, an indifferent man, are my lord and my known; Even though you enjoyed the great pleasure of being with me, we walked in the house of God with like-mindedness. May death come to her, and may she go down to hell alive; For wickedness is in their dwellings, in the midst of them. I cried out to God, and the Lord heard me. Evening and morning and noon I will proclaim, and I will proclaim, and he will hear my voice. He will deliver my soul in peace from those who approach me, as if they were with me in the multitude. God will hear and humble me, the former age. There will be no change for them, as if they did not fear God. Stretch out your hand for retribution, profaning His covenant. The wrath of His countenance separated, and their hearts drew near; Their words have become softer than oil, and they are arrows. Cast your sorrow upon the Lord, and He will feed you, and will not give the reputation of the righteous forever. But You, O God, have brought me down into a student of decay; men of blood and flattery will not live out their days. But, Lord, I trust in You.
.
Psalm 90 .
Living in the help of the Most High, he will settle in the shelter of the Heavenly God. Says the Lord: Thou art my Protector and my Refuge, my God, and I trust in Him. Yako Toy will deliver you from the snare of the trap, and from rebellious words. His cloak will cover you, and you will trust under His wing; His truth will surround you with a weapon, you will not be afraid from the fear of the night, from the arrow that flies in the days, from the thing that passes in darkness, from the cloak, and from the demon of the midday. Thousands will fall from Your country, and darkness will be at Your right hand, but it will not come close to You. Behold Thy eyes, and see the reward of sinners. For You, O Lord, are my hope, You have made the Most High Your refuge. Evil will not come to You, and wound will not come close to Your body. As His Angel commanded you, keep you in all your ways. They will lift you up in their arms, but not when you dash your foot against a stone. Tread on the asp and the basilisk, and cross the lion and the serpent. For I have trusted in Me, and I will deliver; I will cover and because I have known My name. He will call to Me, and I will hear him; I am with him in sorrow, I will destroy him, and I will glorify him, I will fill him with the length of his days, and I will show him My salvation.

God and Lord of hosts, and the Creator of all creation, who for the mercy of Thy unconditional mercy Thy Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, sent down for the salvation of our race, and by His honorable Cross the handwriting of our sins, torn to pieces, and thus victorious over the principles and powers of darkness; Yourself, Lord, Lover of Mankind, accept these thanksgiving and prayer prayers for us sinners, and deliver us from every all-destructive and dark sin, and from all those who embitter us, our seeking, visible and invisible enemies. Nail our flesh with Thy fear, and do not turn our hearts into words or thoughts of evil; but with Thy love we wound our souls, so that we always look to You, and we are guided by the light from You, to You, the unapproachable and ever-present seeing light, we send unceasing confession and thanksgiving to You, to the Beginning Father with Your Only Begotten Son, and the All-Holy, and the Good, and the Life-Giving One spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Psalm 83 .
How beloved is Your village, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs and ends for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoiced in the Living God. For the bird will find itself a temple, and the turtledove will find a nest for itself, where it will lay its young; Thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who live in Your house; they will praise You forever and ever. Blessed is the man, who has his intercession with You, put his ascension in your hearts. In a deplorable vale, in a place of hedgehogs, put it, for the one who lays down the law will give a blessing. They will go from strength to strength: the God of gods will appear in Zion. Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer, inspire, O God of Jacob. Our Defender, see, O God, and look upon the face of Thy Christ. For better is one day in Thy courts than a thousand; I deign to sneak into the house of my God rather than live in the villages of sinners. For the Lord loves mercy and truth, God will give grace and glory, the Lord will not deprive the good of those who walk in kindness. Lord God of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts in Thee.
.
Psalm 84 .
Thou hast favored, O Lord, Thy land; Thou hast returned the captivity of Jacob. Thou hast forsaken the iniquities of Thy people, Thou hast covered all their sins. Thou hast tamed all Thy wrath, Thou hast returned from the wrath of Thy wrath. Bring us back, O God of our salvation, and turn away Your wrath from us. Will You be angry with us forever, or will You spread Your wrath from generation to generation? God, You turn to revive us, and Your people will rejoice in You. Show us, O Lord, Thy mercy, and grant us Thy salvation. I will hear what the Lord God says about me: as He speaks peace to His people, and to His saints, and to those who turn their hearts to Him. Moreover, His salvation is near to those who fear Him, to bring glory to our land. Mercy and truth were met, truth and peace were greeted. Truth rose from the earth, and truth came from heaven. For the Lord will give goodness, and our land will yield its fruit. Truth will go before Him and set its steps.
.
Psalm 85 .
Incline Your ear, O Lord, and hear me, for I am poor and needy. Save my soul, as I am reverend: save Your servant, my God, who trusts in You. Have mercy on me, Lord, as I will cry to You all day long. Make glad the soul of Your servant, for You have taken my soul to You. For You, Lord, are good and meek, and abundantly merciful to all who call on You. Inspire, Lord, my prayer, and listen to the voice of my prayer. On the day of my sorrow I cried out to You, because You heard me. There is no one like You in God, O Lord, and there is no one according to Your deeds. All the pagans that you have created will come and bow before You, Lord, and glorify Your name, for You are great, and You work wonders, You are the only God. Instruct me, O Lord, in Thy path, and I will walk in Thy truth: let my heart rejoice in fearing Thy name. Let me confess to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name forever, for Your great mercy is upon me, and You have delivered my soul from the lowest hell. God, the lawbreakers rose up against me, and the host of the powerful sought my soul, and did not offer it to You before them. And You, O Lord my God, generous and merciful, long-suffering, and abundantly merciful and true, look upon me and have mercy on me, give Your power to Your servant, and save the son of Your servant. Do a sign for good with me, and let those who hate me see and be ashamed, because You, Lord, have helped me and consoled me.

Through the prayers of the saints, our fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen. Prayer to St. Basil the Great .
Master Lord Jesus Christ our God, long-suffering for our sins, and even to this very hour, having brought us, hanging on the Life-Giving Tree, to the prudent thief who entered into paradise, and through death you destroyed death, cleanse us sinners and unworthy Thy servants. Because we have sinned and are lawless, and we are not worthy to lift up our hair and look up to the heights of heaven, we have abandoned the path of Thy righteousness and walked in the wills of our hearts. But we pray for Your immeasurable goodness, spare us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercy, and save us in Your name for the sake of the Holy One, as if our days have disappeared in vanity, take us out of the hand of the enemy, and forgive us our sins, and put to death our carnal wisdom, yes Having put off the old man, let us put on the new; and we will live for You, our Master and Benefactor, and thus, by Your subsequent command, we will reach eternal peace, where there is a Dwelling for all who rejoice, for You are truly the true joy and joy of those who love You, Christ our God, and we send up glory to You, with Your Beginning Father , and Your Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
.
IMPORTANT . Psalm 102 .
Bless the Lord, my soul, and all that is within me, His holy name; Bless the Lord, my soul, and do not forget all His rewards, who cleanses all your iniquities, heals all your ailments, delivers your belly from corruption, crowns you with mercy and bounties, fulfills your desires for good: your youth will be renewed like an eagle. The Lord grant alms and destiny to all those who are offended. Moses told His ways to the sons of Israel His desires. The Lord is generous and merciful, long-suffering and abounding in mercy. He is not completely angry, he is at enmity forever: he did not create for us to eat because of our iniquities, but because of our sins he repaid us to eat. As the height of heaven from the earth, the Lord established His mercy on those who fear Him: the east is far from the west, He has removed our iniquities from us. As a father gives generously to his sons, the Lord will provide for those who fear Him. As we know our creation, I will remember, as the dust of Esma. Man, like the grass of his days, like the flower of the field, will bloom; for a spirit has passed through it, and is not there, and no one knows its place. The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness is on the sons of sons, who keep His covenant and remember His commandments to do. The Lord has prepared His Throne in Heaven, and His Kingdom possesses everyone. Bless the Lord, all His angels, mighty in strength, who do His word, to hear the voice of His words. Bless the Lord, all His might, His servants who do His will. Bless the Lord, all His works, in every place of His dominion, bless the Lord, my soul.
.
Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
.
Psalm 145 .
Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord in my belly, I will sing to my God as long as I am. Do not trust in princes, in the sons of men, for in them there is no salvation. His spirit will depart and return to his land; on that day all his thoughts will perish. Blessed is the God of Jacob, his Helper; his trust is in the Lord his God, who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them; keeping the truth forever, bringing justice to the offended, giving food to the hungry. The Lord makes the bound, the Lord makes wise the blind; The Lord raises up the downtrodden, the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord protects strangers, He will accept the orphan and the widow, and He will destroy the path of sinners. The Lord your God will reign forever in Zion, forever and ever.
.
And now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
.

APOSTLE .
Readings from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians:
.
Brethren, I tell you the gospel, which I preached to you, and in which you stand, and by which you are saved, if you hold the word of the gospel, unless you believe in vain. I delivered it to you from the first, even as I received it, as Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, and as he was buried, and as he rose on the third day, according to the scriptures, and as he appeared to Cephas, the same one ten, and then appeared to more than five hundred brethren alone , from them many have remained until now, but few have disappeared: then he appeared to Jacob, the same apostle to all: after all, as if he were a certain monster, he appeared to me. Because I am considered an apostle, who is not worthy to be called an apostle, I have persecuted the church of God. It is by the grace of God that I am: and His grace which is in me was not in vain, but I labored more than all of them: not I, but the grace of God which is with me. Whether they are wretched or not, we preach, and so we believe.

GOSPEL .
Reading from Matthew's Holy Gospel
.
Glory to Thee, Lord, glory to Thee ( Bow
)
.
The Lord spoke this parable: Be like the kingdom of heaven to the man king, who desires to quarrel over words with his servants. I will begin to sue him, having brought him the only debtor of my talent: I do not have to repay him, and the Lord commanded me to sell him, and his wife, and his children, and all that he had, and give him back. Then that servant fell, bowing to him, saying: Lord, have patience with me, and I will repay you all. The Lord has shown mercy to that servant, forgive him and forgive him the debt. Having left that servant, you found one thing (from) your slander, who owed him a hundred penalities: and you ate it by crushing, saying: “Give it back to me, to whom you owe it.” The fall then slandered him on his nose, begging him, saying: “Have patience with me, and I will repay you everything.” He didn’t want to, but put him in prison until he gave him his due. When the former saw his slander, she took great pity and came and told her master everything that had happened. Then his master called him and said to him: Evil servant, he has forgiven you all the debt; therefore you begged me: would it not be fitting for you to have mercy on your minion, just as I had mercy on you? And his Lord became angry and handed him over as a tormentor until he repaid all his debt. This is what My Heavenly Father will do for you, if you do not let each of your brothers off your hearts from their sins.

And now: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only begotten, who was born of the Father before all ages. Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to Whom all things were. For our sake, man, and for our salvation, came down from Heaven, and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became human. She was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And again the coming one will be judged with glory by the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Life-Giving Lord, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. The All-Holy Trinity, the consubstantial power, the indivisible kingdom, the wine of all good things, be kind to me, a sinner, strengthen, enlighten my heart, and take away all my filth. Blessed be the name of the Lord from now on and forever ( Thrice with bows

Glory, even now: Psalm 33 .
I will bless the Lord at all times; I will make His praise in my mouth. My soul will glory in the Lord, that the meek may hear and rejoice. Magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together. Seek the Lord, and hear me, and deliver me from all my sorrows. Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed. This beggar cried out, and the Lord heard and saved him from all his sorrows. The Angel of the Lord will encamp around those who fear Him and deliver them. Taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man who trusts in Nan. Fear the Lord, all your saints, for there is no hardship for those who fear Him. With riches you become poor and hungry: but those who seek the Lord will not be deprived of any good. Come children, listen to me, I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Who is a person who loves life and sees good things? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking flattery. Avoid evil and do good, seek peace and marriage, etc. The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears are upon their prayer. The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to consume their memory from the earth. The righteous cried out, and the Lord heard them, and delivered them from all their sorrows. The Lord is near to those who are broken in heart, and will save those who are humble in spirit. Many are the sorrows of the righteous, and the Lord will deliver me from all of them. The Lord protects all their bones; not one of them will be broken. The death of sinners is cruel, and those who hate the righteous will sin. The Lord will deliver the souls of His servant, and all who trust in Him will not sin.

Chapter seven. Fine (dinner)
In its composition, the sequence of visual arts coincides with the external, singing side of the liturgy; As a result, the explanation of this sequence should actually be reduced to an explanation of the chants of the liturgy. But liturgical chants are inextricably linked with prayers. “According to the ancient rule (of song succession), says Simeon of Thessaloniki, according to which the rite of the sacred liturgy itself is observed, the prayers raised to God through the priest are sung by singers; “and while the priest, mediating, secretly prays inside the altar, the petitions of the people are raised to God”422. Liturgical chants and prayers complement and explain each other. – From here it is clear that for the correct interpretation of pictorial prayers it is necessary to compare them not only with liturgical chants, but also with prayers. Such a comparison, while helping to comprehensively reveal the content of the service we are considering, can at the same time be useful in explaining the full liturgy.
Before performing the sacrament of the Eucharist, the celebrant performed in ancient times the commemoration of the living and the dead, offering prayers for those who brought gifts for the sacrament and for those for whom they were brought, as well as for all people423. Accordingly, the images begin with the prayer: “Remember us, Lord, when You come into Your kingdom.” This prayer is then repeated many times, with the addition of the Gospel “beatitudes”. The prayer appeal “Remember us, Lord” can, in particular, resemble the general church prayer that stands at the beginning of the Liturgy of the Faithful, according to the VIII book of the Apostolic Constitutions424, and - a litany similar to it in content from the liturgy of St. Jacob - “Save, have mercy”425. But there petitions are raised separately for those sailing, traveling, for the suffering, captives and sick, for benefactors and the merciful, for the peace of the whole world and for every Christian soul; - here all these private petitions are united in one common exclamation: “Remember us, Lord,” which actually responds only to the litany chorus “Lord, have mercy.” However, the “beatitudes” placed side by side, as well as the litany, separately mention the peacemakers and the merciful, the meek and the weeping, the unshakable confessors of the name of Christ and the courageous champions of the truth. The church pleases all of them, as its valiant warriors, for whom, according to the false promise of the Savior, there is prepared “much reward in heaven.”
Following the “blessed” on the pictorial ones, according to the remark of Simeon Sol., “they read what is read by everyone outside the altar and at the liturgy: the trinitarian doxology of the angels - Holy, holy, holy - the symbol of faith” and so on.426. Thus, from the “vale of mourning,” from the earth, our hearts ascend to “mountain,” to heaven, to the “church of the triumphant,” to the throne of the Most High, and we, together with the angelic faces, sing the “song of victory.” With this song, like some ancient liturgies427, they connect a small doxology: “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
The creed that is then pronounced, both in content and in position, should be compared with the Eucharistic prayers, on the basis of which, in all likelihood, it developed.
As can be seen from the Apostolic Decrees, Eucharistic thanksgiving in ancient times had the same meaning as the symbol of faith later acquired, and was evidence of orthodoxy: “whoever of those who come gives thanks in this way (correctly), - says the Decrees, - receive him as a disciple of Christ"428 . This explains why in ancient times each church had its own symbol: initially there could be as many of them as there were Eucharistic prayers. Later, naturally, one definite formula for the confession of faith was established, which at the same time served as a model for the leaders of the church when improvising Eucharistic prayers.
Eucharistic prayers first of all clarify the motives for glorifying God with all creation, and they use expressions that are literally similar to the symbol of faith. “Truly it is worthy and just, they say, - first of all, to sing praises to You, the Lord God, the Father Almighty - - Lord of heaven and earth and of all creation, visible and invisible, - - Father of Your Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is in the bosom Yours, who is the true God, the true light."429 Next we talk about the appearance of Christ the Savior into the world, about His suffering on the cross, death and burial, resurrection on the third day, ascension into heaven and the glorious second coming430; mention is made of the sending of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, life-giving power431.
As is known, the symbol reveals the same thoughts and in almost the same expressions. In particular, expressions about the Holy Spirit in the Greek liturgy of St. James is found to be so close to the text of the creed, which can only be explained by borrowing432.
After the symbol of faith in the current rite, there is a prayer “Loosen, leave.” In the oldest succession of images - Sin. 863 – this prayer does not exist; and in ancient Slavic monuments it is replaced by a similar prayer after the Our Father; “Lord our God, show forth your glorious Mother.” Our current liturgy also does not have the prayer “Loosen, leave”; and only in the liturgies of St. It is cited by James and Peter as “prayer before communion”433. At present, the 7th and 9th prayers of “following to St. communion”, as well as the 2nd prayer “rite of confession” (“Lord I. X., Son of the living God”).
So, in the rite of the depictions, only the chants corresponding to the prayers for the consecration of the Gifts are omitted. But there are no such chants even in the full liturgy; and they shouldn’t be in the rank of icons.
The prayer “Weaken, leave” is followed in the rite of the images by the prayer “Our Father.” Since ancient times it has been associated with communion; namely, the petition - “give us this day our daily bread,” according to the ancient interpretation, refers to the Eating of the Bread that came down from heaven, that is, the body and blood of Christ434. Therefore, the Lord’s Prayer is invariably included in not only the “mass service”, but also the mass service.
Next, according to the current rite, is the reading of holiday and daily kontakia in honor of the Savior, the Mother of God, angels and saints, as well as in memory of the departed and martyrs. In their meaning, they correspond to the prayers of remembrance and should, therefore, come before the “Our Father”, along with the prayer “Weaken, leave”; then the kontakion of the Transfiguration435 or any other in honor of the Savior would recall the time of the mysterious transubstantiation of St. Darov. For some reason, among the kontakions in honor and glory of the Lord, preference is given to the kontakion of the Transfiguration - is it not because the Transfiguration of the Lord with particular vividness and clarity can recall the act of transubstantiation as a similar phenomenon?...
In the oldest rank of images - Sin. 863 – no kontakia. They were introduced, in all likelihood, in imitation of the hitherto maintained sequence of liturgical prayers, in which intercessory prayers are placed after the Eucharistic ones. At mass, a commemoration has already taken place once - during the reading of the “beatitudes”, with the refrain “Remember us, Lord.” It is repeated here. Such repetition is also allowed at the liturgy: there the first commemoration occurs at the great entrance and at the proskomedia, and the second after the transubstantiation of St. Darov. This repetition can be understood in the sense that at first we are talking mainly about the earthly church - the militant one, and we cry: “may the Lord God remember us in His kingdom” (= “Remember us, Lord”) and “allow us to receive communion without condemnation Your holy things" (= "Come to Him and be enlightened, and your faces will not be ashamed"). And after the consecration of the Gifts, when the Heavenly Bread is already presented on the throne, we, putting aside worldly cares, as if admired into heaven itself, “into the church of the triumphant, written in heaven,” and together with them “offer the verbal service,” again remembering all living and dead. However, at the liturgy St. Jacob, used by the Jacobites, after the consecration of the Gifts, before communion, special antiphonal chants are laid, similar to our kontakia in honor of the Mother of God, saints and in memory of the departed436.
In the rite “for communion” (Syn. 863), the Lord’s Prayer is immediately followed by the threefold “Lord, have mercy.” Such “Lord, have mercy” in the liturgy of St. Mark constitutes the conclusion of the priest’s prayer before the exclamation: “Holy to Holies”437; and 12 times, as now at mass, “Lord, have mercy” is pronounced by the people at the liturgy of St. James, after “One is Holy”438. The very exclamation “One is holy” is invariably found both in the rite of the liturgy and in all liturgies. In the current rite, this exclamation is preceded by a prayerful appeal to the Most Holy Trinity: “The All-Holy Trinity, the consubstantial power.” We find the same thing in the Georgian lists of the liturgy of St. Jacob439.
The further sacramental verse - “Taste and see that Christ is the Lord, Alleluia” (Syn. 863) - is already mentioned by St. Cyril of Jerusalem in the 5th occult teaching; It is also found in the liturgy of St. Jacob. At the same liturgy, as well as at the liturgy of the Apostolic Constitutions, during communion the reading of Psalm 33 is relied upon440.
Given in Sin. The 863 prayers of communion are similar in their general content to the same liturgical prayers. Two of them initially coincide with the prayers found in the liturgy of St. James, namely: “Fill my mouth with praise, O Lord” (Ps. 70:8) and “We give thanks to You, Christ our God, for You have made us worthy to partake of communion.” There is ap. in the liturgy. James and the exclamation: “Be the name of the Lord,” pronounced before and after the teaching of St. Gifts to believers441.
As for the current beginning of the images (and liturgy), consisting of Isalms 102 and 145 and the song “Only Begotten Son,” although it is, comparatively, of late origin (it is not in Syn. 863), nevertheless does not in any way contradict the nature of the rest of the prayers; its grateful and laudatory content is quite applicable to following “to communion.” The same must be said about Psalm 141, which, according to some monuments, is read at the end of the images, along with Psalm 33.442. Regarding Psalms 144 and 145, it is known, among other things, that they were performed in ancient times at the liturgy during communion; What does the initial words of ps. The 144th was sometimes proclaimed by the priest himself before the removal of the saint. Gifts for the communion of the laity443.
A comparison of the images with liturgical prayers clearly shows that the images truly depict or reflect the liturgy. But since the liturgy, being the sacrament of communion, is performed, according to the commandment of the Savior, “in His remembrance” and should recall the work of redemption He accomplished, then in its prayers the whole essence of Christian doctrine is expressed. Being a true reflection of the liturgy, the images here remain faithful to their original image. Their content is, although brief, a completely complete presentation of the basic truths of faith and morality: in the “beatitudes” and the Lord’s Prayer a living and figurative presentation of our moral duties is given; the creed offers a separate and precise disclosure of Christian dogma. In a word, the entire content of the Christian catechism is exhausted.
