Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the city of Omsk
Holy Assumption Cathedral

(Cathedral in honor of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Ever-Virgin Mary) is an active cathedral, one of the most visited churches in Omsk, located in the very center of the city on Cathedral Square. Landmark of Omsk. It was destroyed during Soviet times and restored at the beginning of the 21st century with funds specially collected by the townspeople.

History of the temple[[edit]h2>

The city of Omsk approached the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a serious cultural center, in which an increasing number of citizens needed spiritual development. The existing Resurrection Cathedral could no longer satisfy all those in need, and a fundraiser was announced among the parishioners for its expansion. In the nineties of the 19th century, a rather significant event took place in the church life of the region - the Omsk Orthodox Diocese was established. It was thanks to this fact that the decision was made to use the funds raised to build a new Temple in the city center, which would become the main spiritual center of the region. They named the future temple the Assumption Cathedral.

The architect of the future church was E. Virrich, who used the St. Petersburg Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood by A. Parland as a prototype. It is worth paying tribute to the Omsk architect, he did not simply copy the design of the capital’s temple, but deeply reworked it and adapted it to the needs of the townspeople. By the way, this technique was not something new for church construction in Russia - throughout the country to this day you can find churches that are very similar to each other and, in fact, are recycled copies of each other.

The funds collected by parishioners were only enough to begin construction of the cathedral, which took place on July 16, 1891. It is worth noting the fact that the cornerstone of the Omsk temple was laid by Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov, then still the crown prince. By the way, the future Emperor of Russia donated significant funds for the construction of the Cathedral. But, as always, there was not enough money, and the Holy Synod was forced to finance the end of construction. The Assumption Cathedral of Omsk first opened its doors to parishioners in 1898. In total, a huge amount of money for Tsarist Russia was spent on its construction and decoration - 125 thousand rubles. The consecration of the Assumption Cathedral was conducted by the first bishop of the Omsk Diocese, Gregory. Already by 1900, a parochial school was operating at the Temple, and the number of parishioners exceeded 5,000 people. Gradually the church becomes the center of the spiritual and cultural life of the city. Omsk residents like to take walks in the evenings in the garden laid out around them, and in the children's playgrounds during the daytime, teachers teach children of all classes on a voluntary basis.

In the period until 1917, the Assumption Cathedral became the venue for all the city's festive events, and its vaults welcomed prominent people of the Empire.

Harbingers of trouble came in 1918 in the form of a new government, which demanded that all the property of the Omsk Orthodox Diocese be transferred to the Bolsheviks. The meeting of parishioners is dispersed by soldiers, and the doors of the Assumption Cathedral are closed. In 1920, Archbishop Sylvester of Omsk was shot. Since 1923, no services have been held in the Temple, and the building itself has fallen into disrepair. The cathedral was blown up only in 1935 by decision of the Presidium of the Omsk Regional Executive Committee of the Councils of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Caucasus. On the site of the temple, a square was laid out, called the “Garden of Pioneers,” which remained a favorite vacation spot for the townspeople. Until the 2000s, a city Christmas tree was erected here and folk festivals were held.

Assumption Cathedral in Omsk
The Holy Assumption Cathedral is an active cathedral, one of the most visited churches in Omsk. It was destroyed during the Soviet era and restored in 2007 with funds specially collected by the townspeople. Construction of the temple began on July 16, 1891. The first stone in the foundation of the cathedral was laid by the future Russian Emperor Nicholas II. The area of the cathedral was 1518 meters, the height of the bell tower was 44 meters, the height of the cross was 3 meters, and the diameter of the dome was 15 meters. In 1923, services in the temple ceased. The building, handed over to the Soviet authorities, was empty for a long time. In 1935, a decision was made to demolish the building, and the temple was blown up. Since 1949, a city Christmas tree and a “winter town” have been installed every year on the site of the former cathedral. The Assumption Cathedral is considered a unique historical monument, one of the largest attractions in Russia. On February 25, 2009, a shrine with the relics of the New Martyr Sylvester was installed in the cathedral.

Seek God, Seek tearfully, Seek, people, before it’s too late! Search everywhere, Search everyone. And you will find Him one day. And there will be joy Above the sky! But seek like a beggar for bread! This is a poem by an unknown author who once wrote it on the house of Blessed Pasha of Sarov (the house is located in the Seraphim-Diveevo Convent)

I go to the temple to pray to God, Having repented of my sins, to receive communion worthily, To saturate my soul with incorruptible food - So beautiful, sweet, desired! With great fear I approach the Holy Chalice and, having accepted the Holy Gift, I depart in delight. My God shared a meal with me and generously poured out His grace into my soul. But it hurts me when sometimes the Lord comes out and calls me to the Chalice, but everyone stands there and won’t leave their place, they don’t hear the call and don’t go to the Chalice. The Lord calls to them in vain, He offers them eternal food in vain, People do not see, they stand in blindness, They do not want to accept Christ with their souls! They honor with their lips, but their hearts are far away, And how lonely they are, my God. And I am not leaving the temple alone - the Lord is with me, I am always strong with Him!

Procession in honor of the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'. Omsk

Hundreds of believers gathered at the Holy Assumption Cathedral to participate in the procession dedicated to the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Rus'.

(Priests wear yellow robes on Sundays, when Christ and his victory over the forces of hell are glorified. These vestments are also worn on the days of remembrance of the apostles, prophets, saints - that is, those saints who, through their service in the Church, reminded Christ the Savior: they enlightened people, called for repentance. This is why yellow liturgical clothing is most often used.)

Matorin, film director N. Mikhalkov, artists V. Talyzina, D. Pevtsov, S. Zakharov, T. Gverdtsiteli, N. Babkina.

In the same 2007, on the initiative of the Government of the Omsk Region, the adjacent square was officially given the name “Cathedral Square”. All 27 members of the meeting of the Omsk city council voted for giving a new name to the square.

Description

A detailed description of the cathedral of the 19th century has been preserved (in 2007 the temple was restored from photographs, and does not repeat the original in all details). The area of the cathedral was 1518 m², the height of the bell tower to the apple of the cross was 44 meters, the height of the cross was 3 meters, the diameter of the dome was 15 meters.

At that time, the church had a complex space-planning solution that preserved the traditional composition: an altar, the middle part of the temple, a refectory and a vestibule with a bell tower. The church was installed on a high ground floor, made of brick (30 types of patterned bricks of different colors were used in construction).

The architectural solution is cross-shaped in section. The five-domed structure consists of helmet-shaped domes rising on cylindrical drum towers cut through by arched windows. Above the altar there is a pentagonal concha. The roof of the refectory is gable.

An octagonal lantern with windows and pilasters at the corners is installed above the dome. On the bell tower there is the same lantern with a belt (interception) at the top. The heads are installed on the dome, altar, chapel and bell tower. Eight-pointed crosses.

Unfortunately, no examples of the temple's decoration have survived to this day. It is only known that the decorative patterns repeated the examples of Moscow architecture of the 17th century. Rusticism was used in the basement of the building. Niches, curbs, blades, and complex cornices in several tiers were used as decorations. The semi-circular windows are decorated with platbands, and on the ground floor they are enclosed in metal bars.

The bell tower is three-tiered, with rectangular window openings. The bell tier is octagonal, with arched openings, and ends with a keel-shaped covering.

The temple was painted by the artist Yemtsov. The iconostasis with all the icons was made in the workshop of the Yekaterinburg merchant A.P. Kozhevnikov.

Relics of the Holy Martyr Sylvester, Archbishop of Omsk and Pavlodar

Hieromartyr Sylvester Archbishop of Omsk

Archbishop Sylvester

was canonized in 2000 at the Council of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. The relics of Saint Sylvester were discovered on July 16, 2005 during excavations of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Mother of God and are now in the lower church of the Assumption Cathedral in Omsk.

In the fall of 1919, the troops of Kolchak’s army began to retreat, and at the end of 1919 the White Army left Omsk, which the Bolsheviks soon entered. The archbishop without hesitation remained in the city captured by the persecutors of Christianity along with his clergy and flock. Having captured the city, the Bolsheviks immediately arrested the courageous saint. Archbishop Sylvester was imprisoned, where he was tortured for two months, demanding repentance from him. Having achieved nothing, the atheists subjected the saint to a cruel and painful death. Having nailed his hands to the floor and thus crucified him, they burned his body with red-hot ramrods, and then pierced his heart with a red-hot ramrod. Archbishop Sylvester suffered martyrdom on February 26, 1920.
