Miracles of healing in 1903
In 1903, in Moscow, in the Assumption Cathedral, the mantle of St. Seraphim of Sarov was exhibited for veneration. And then several cases of miraculous healings were recorded.
One nobleman suffered from severe stomach pain for 30 years. Towards the end he became weak and could barely walk. Nevertheless, he hoped for healing and therefore went to the all-night vigil at the Assumption Cathedral on July 18. He kissed the icon of the saint and his mantle, and upon leaving the temple he immediately felt that there was no pain. His vigor returned and he subsequently became completely healthy.
At the same time, the Ryazan landowner Shatilov brought his weakened relative to the mantle of St. Seraphim of Sarov. They carried her into the cathedral in their arms, and the next day she stood alone at the service and heartily thanked Father Seraphim for the healing.

Seraphim-Diveevo Monastery: reviews of healing
Nowadays, as in the last century, cases of healings are recorded in the Seraphim-Diveyevo Monastery to strengthen the faith of those who doubt the holiness of St. Seraphim of Sarov. We are talking about miracles recorded from the words of those healed or their relatives.

In 1999, Alevtina, suffering from severe pain in her legs, so that she had to constantly bandage them, came to Diveevo. First steps
The question of canonization of the Sarov ascetic was first raised in 1883. Then the head of the Moscow women's gymnasium, Viktorov, in a letter to Chief Prosecutor Konstantin Pobedonostsev, proposed “to mark the beginning of the reign of the Emperor (Alexander III. - T.S.) ... by the discovery of the relics of the pious saint, revered by all of Russia.” However, there was no answer. Other private proposals were later rejected.
In 1894, on the initiative of Abbot Rafail (Trukhin), abbot of the Sarov monastery, a detailed biography of Seraphim of Sarov was compiled, which reflected documented evidence of 94 miracles from the life of the ascetic. The Synod reacted in two ways: to refuse canonization, but to continue collecting information. The process of glorification, which had just begun, thus froze, and it is unknown how long the silence of the Synod would have continued if not for the “cunning” of Archimandrite Seraphim (Chichagov), the future Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Hieromartyr (executed in 1937).

“Only bones were found...”
On January 11, 1903, a commission headed by Metropolitan Vladimir of Moscow left for Sarov to retrieve and study the relics of Seraphim of Sarov. Metropolitan Veniamin (Fedchenkov) recalled: “The body of the monk was given over to decay, the bones, completely preserved, are located correctly... The hair of the head and beard of a grayish-reddish color were also preserved.” The results of the commission were submitted to the Holy Synod. “Why go somewhere into the forest, they only found bones,” said one of the Synod members. Everyone was gripped by confusion - if the body had decayed, then Seraphim was not a saint...

The fact is that during the Synodal period, the opinion took root in the popular consciousness and among the clergy: the holiness of the deceased is evidenced not only by the life and miracles of a person, but also by the incorruptibility of his relics. In order to refute this optional condition for canonization, an entire theological investigation was required, the results of which were published in a statement by Metropolitan Anthony (Vadkovsky): “The incorruption of relics is not at all considered a sign for the glorification of holy saints; The incorruption of relics, when it exists, is a miracle, but only additional to those miracles that are performed through their mediation.” Doubts disappeared.
After this, the Synod recognized the results of the examination of the relics as satisfactory and prepared a report to the emperor, in which it expressed its consent to the canonization of Seraphim of Sarov. Having read the report, Nicholas II made the following resolution: “I read it with a feeling of true joy and deep tenderness.”

When the Church is a state institution
It is known that the reign of Nicholas II was marked by the glorification of six saints at once, among whom was Seraphim of Sarov. The Russian Orthodox Church did not know such activity in the search for new saints during the entire so-called Synodal period (XVIII century - 1917). Since Peter I abolished the patriarchate (1721), and instead established the Holy Synod, which was under the control of a secular official - the chief prosecutor, the Church came under the formal jurisdiction of the emperor. She had to coordinate all her proposals and initiatives with the will of His Imperial Majesty. This resulted in the general apathy of many church hierarchs. Important spiritual issues remained unresolved in a series of endless bureaucratic approvals, discussions and reasoning of the most general nature. A similar situation arose around the canonization of saints: any such process dragged on for many years. It is enough to give the figures: in two hundred years, five ascetics of the faith were glorified: Demetrius of Rostov, Innocent of Irkutsk, Mitrofan of Voronezh and Tikhon of Zadonsk, Theodosius of Totem. Has holiness really become so impoverished over these centuries? No. The Church as a state institution had to solve other, “more important” tasks.

But Nicholas II suddenly begins to pay special attention to this issue. The religious thinker P.K. Ivanov wrote on this occasion: “As much as the Romanov family forgot about the saints, so the last of the family, the doomed Nicholas II, most painfully longed for a meeting with the true saints.” It was the last emperor who had such a meeting with Seraphim of Sarov.
