Apple Spas: what kind of holiday, traditions and signs, what not to do on August 19

The end of the summer season is significant for Orthodox Christians and especially for those who harvest from their gardens and farms. It is the end of summer that is characterized by many Orthodox holidays, which have long been loved by everyone for their importance among the people.

First of all, August is marked by Honey, Apple and Bread (aka Nut) Spas. Savior is the salvation of the soul, cleansing from sins, finding repentance and peace of mind in the face of God. All these three holidays are celebrated in August every year (with a short interval). Orthodox Christians prepare for them in advance, because they mark the beginning of the harvest, which can be eaten. Everything collected over the summer is stored throughout the fall and winter until the next harvest. It is important that the harvest be harvested on time, not earlier than prescribed by the Orthodox calendar.

Honey Spas - put the honey on the table!

The first holiday falls on August 14th. On this day the Honey Savior is celebrated. The number was not chosen by chance, because by this time the honey in the combs is ripe and the first harvest can be harvested. Spas is when it is customary in the church to bless honey, after which it becomes not just medicinal, but has healing properties. For a person who eats such honey, no diseases are scary, ailments completely disappear and spiritual and physical strength appear in the body. It is believed that such honey promotes rejuvenation by renewing cells throughout the body, as it is saturated with the holy spirit.

Signs for Apple Spas

The weather at Yablochny Spas was used to judge the coming autumn and winter. If the Transfiguration is dry and warm, then the autumn will be soft and without rain, and the winter will be harsh. Rainy weather on August 19 promised an early rainy autumn and a “rotten” winter with frequent thaws.

That is why it is generally accepted that with the Honey Savior a holiday begins in the house, warmth in the soul and health of the whole family.

What date is Apple Spas?

After the honey holiday, fasting begins immediately, during which they bake poppy seed pies, pancakes, and eat honey and cucumbers. In church calendars it is referred to as Assumption, and it is associated with the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. This Lent celebrates another holiday - Apple Savior. The number 19 marks the transition to autumn, and this great holiday is important for parishioners and everyone who grows apples, and even for ordinary lay people. It's nice to serve the fresh harvest to the poor, the sick, and everyone you meet. The Blessed Apple Savior is the beginning of the first frosts or simply a drop in temperature on the soil.

The apples ripen just in time for this holiday. Many varieties ripen in August, and therefore it is believed that you can only try them from August 19th.

On this day, August 19, the great Orthodox holiday is celebrated - the Transfiguration of the Lord, when fruits from trees are brought to all churches for refreshments and illumination. All apples become magical and fulfill your deepest wishes.

Traditions at Apple Spas

The Apple Savior is associated with a number of signs and rituals, which were mainly correlated with the Dormition Fast and were dedicated to seeing off the summer and celebrating the new harvest. The main tradition is to bless the fruits of the new harvest on Apple Savior, primarily apples, as well as grapes and other gifts of the earth. It was believed that the fruits consecrated on Apple Savior acquire healing powers and are perfectly suited for “salvation” during the Dormition Fast.

Blessed apples were eaten raw on this day, all kinds of dishes were made from them, they were baked with honey (blessed earlier, on Honey Day ). Apples, other fruits and honey were used to make Lenten pies and other baked goods. Drinks were prepared from apples: compotes, infusions, ciders; also on this day they began to prepare the fruits of the new harvest for future use - they made jam, marmalade, and so on.

In Rus', on Yablochny Spas, mass trade in apples and other fruits began; they were sold by the whole cartload, organizing fairs and festivities.

On this day it was customary to give apples to friends, relatives, neighbors, as well as beggars; people had family tea parties and gave each other apple pies. The tradition of giving apples and apple pastries to loved ones on this day is still alive.

history of the holiday

The beginning of this holiday occurs during the life of Jesus Christ. Before the crucifixion, Jesus prayed so earnestly on Mount Tabor that the disciples present noticed how the Lord was transformed, and his clothes shone with white heavenly light. This confirmed the fact that Jesus Christ is the son of God, and therefore the holiday is called “Transfiguration of the Lord.”

This holiday is associated with events that help a person find spiritual transformation through repentance. To do this, you need to remember all your bad deeds and repent, then the Lord will help you find the true path and forgive all sins.

In agriculture, the beginning of Apple Spas is associated with the planting of winter crops. In ancient times, Orthodox farmers invited priests to receive blessings, who prayed that the next harvest would be just as good and thanked God for a fruitful year. In Rus', they celebrated the day with songs, because it was believed that on this day the first autumn sun began to shine. After this, the first cold weather had already set in, which meant it was necessary to begin preparing for winter.

The meaning of the word saved

Examples of the use of the word saved in literature.

Our explanation did not last long. I told him that I had saved him from two troubles, and offered my services to remove the third, namely, to reconcile him with Ledru-Rollin.
Major Kharitonov was saved in flight by the artificial horizon, in which a bullet lodged, heading straight for the head.

This hasty order ultimately saved not only his shoulder straps, but the entire aircraft carrier as a whole.

Then the Adept did everything to win my favor, although I rightfully belonged to him from the moment he saved me.

To date, the works of Spas 2 -7 have been published on the study of the structure of the alkaloid through its synthesis, as well as several other methods.

In one heated battle, both fought with excellent courage, but Alcibiades was wounded, and then Socrates covered him with his body, repelled the attackers and thus saved Alcibiades himself and his weapon from the enemies.

However, she had the opportunity to catch her breath, after all, she avoided death, Antonov’s plans collapsed, and Zoska gratefully remembered the owner of the farm, this uncomplaining executor of his wife’s will, who did not lose his head and saved the farm and Zoska.

You think that if you saved her life, this gives you the right to liberties, but she is an aristocrat and will quickly forget about gratitude if you break the rules she has set.

The naked people, imagining that they had been saved by a heavenly angel in the form of a well-aimed arquebusier, fell to their knees.

Sometimes he consoled himself with the thought that he had already saved Aachen once, preventing it from being destroyed.

Eze, where it is beautiful and warm and the only thing missing in the house is a man, a letter from a guy who flew with him as a gunner during the war, was confident that Barber saved his life when he was wounded in the stomach over Palermo, and, oddly enough, , after demobilization he wrote a book.

Bartold saved, organized an escape, carried his friend out of the hospital, loaded him onto a boat, climbed the Volga to a small town, handed him over to his relative, a well-known surgeon at that time, he not only healed the gangrenous stump, but also made a completely decent prosthesis, after which Petrov was taken abroad to Paris and met there as a hero, he would have lost his leg and escaped from the gallows, and crossed the border on a prosthesis, although he was declared on all the wanted lists of the empire as a particularly dangerous criminal.

The poet grumbled in response that, in addition to his writings, he had other good deeds: once, for example, he lent a friend the entire proceeds from a benefit performance and thereby saved him and his entire family from certain death.

To be fair, it should be noted that by the time he graduated from school, Beslan’s authority among his fellow villagers was quite comparable to that of Akhmet. However, this was an authority of a completely different kind. Being an extremely dexterous, strong and recklessly brave child from birth, Beslan, placed in the conditions in which he happened to grow up , to this he added a fair amount of audacity, cunning, cruelty and an amazing ability to quickly make the most incredible, but later turning out to be the only correct decisions. Due to these qualities, he was early noticed by those village residents, whose trade was already far from the idyllic peaceful labor of rural workers He began to be involved in various kinds of crimes - he never let anyone down and did not even cause any complaints - his further career was easy to guess. However, everything turned out somewhat differently and in a certain sense - it was Akhmet who saved his friend at that time. He was leaving for Moscow, go to college, Beslan unexpectedly for everyone and perhaps for myself

And suddenly I begin to feel myself as a monument to those who saved you, when a little boy walked through the dead besieged Leningrad, and several steps separated him from those who now rest in the mass graves of his hometown.

Nut Spas - the beginning of autumn!

The next event in August is Nut Spas - this is a holiday when nuts and bread ripen, and therefore it is called both Nut and Bread at the same time. In Nut Spas, it is customary to visit the temple to receive a blessing for the next year and offer gratitude for the harvest received this season.

On August 29, Nut Spas is celebrated. This number, like previous holidays, helps people unite in order to thank the Lord God for the harvest, because it is by this day that the grain in the fields ripens. In Orekhovy, also known as Khlebny Spas, it is customary to treat people to nuts and eat them. It is not necessary to bless the nuts.

The nut savior is also called Not Made by Hands, which means that the image of Christ is not made by hands. This name also comes from the life of Jesus Christ. The story goes that Jesus, after washing his face with water, wiped his face with a towel, which showed his face. Then an image of Christ was painted from this towel, which was passed down from one generation of emperors to another, but in the 12th century it was lost and restored only in copies.

Three Saviors: traditions and signs

In August, Orthodox believers celebrate three holidays in honor of the Savior (three Saviors) - honey, apple and nut. In their celebration, folk and Christian traditions are closely intertwined.

Spas honey

The first Spas (“on the water”, honey Spas) falls on August 14 and was established on the occasion of a double victory: the Russian prince Andrei Bogolyubsky defeated the Bulgarians, and the Greek emperor Manuel defeated the Arabs in 1164. The Russian prince and the Greek emperor had the Holy Cross of the Lord in their troops. They both earnestly prayed to him for help, and both were rewarded with a wonderful vision with the troops: from the icons of the Savior and the Mother of God taken to war, light emanated and overshadowed the troops. The warriors bravely rushed at the enemy and won.

In the church calendar, this holiday is marked as the Origin (wearing out) of the venerable trees of the Life-giving Cross of the Lord. It is accompanied by the removal of the cross, a religious procession and the solemn blessing of water of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Therefore, the first Spas is sometimes called the wet Spas (“on the water”).

Popularly, the first Savior is better known as the honey one. This day is a holiday for beekeepers, when beekeepers break the first honeycombs in the hives. “On the first Savior, break the honeycomb,” “On the first Savior, even a beggar will eat honey,” people say. The peasants believed that from this day on the bees would stop producing honey. The first honeycombs were usually taken to church: not only for consecration, but also “to remember the parents.”

As a rule, the sowing of winter crops began with the first Savior. “The first Savior is the first sowing,” our ancestors said, and they certainly brought seeds to the church, and the priests sprinkled the fields with holy water before sowing. Wells were also blessed. The following folk signs are still alive: “On the first Savior, roses fade, good dew falls,” “On a wet Savior, horses are bathed, and bees stop carrying honey bribes.”

The feast of the First Savior coincided with the day of remembrance of the Old Testament martyrs of the Maccabees. The mention of them in the folk calendar is associated with the time of poppy harvesting.

Spas apple

The Second Savior (Great Savior, Savior “on the mountain”, apple) is celebrated on August 19. In the Orthodox Church, on this day they celebrate the Transfiguration of the Lord - the mysterious transformation described in the Gospels, the manifestation of the Divine greatness and glory of Jesus Christ before three closest disciples.

The Gospels tell us that Jesus took Peter, James and John and went up the mountain to pray. During this prayer, the Transfiguration occurred - Jesus’ face lit up with light, and his clothes became whiter than snow. After this, two prophets appeared - Moses and Elijah - and talked with Jesus. The disciples who witnessed the Transfiguration were frightened. But Jesus reassured them and forbade them to talk about what happened during prayer until Christ was resurrected, as was destined for him. It is believed that this holiday is intended to remind people of the need for spiritual transformation.

The Great Savior was especially revered by the people. On this day, apples and other fruits were blessed in temples, after which they were allowed to be eaten. Hence the popular name of the holiday - apple. According to tradition, on this day all believers baked pies with apples, made apple jam and treated each other to it.

Vasily Selivanov in his book “The Year of the Russian Farmer” wrote: “On the same day, after lunch, crowds of women and children besiege the landowners’ gardens, which are almost always surrendered to merchants, and buy from the latter everything that would even be thrown out as unusable, if only called an apple. They buy for pennies, for hemp and flax, for eggs; for example, for one egg they get two or three handfuls of apples, as many as the farmer’s broad hands can hold. On this day, whole carts of carrion and non-carrion, even good varieties of apples, are poured into the gardens and taken to the surrounding parishes to churches, where at the end of the mass everything is sold out.”

The ears of the new harvest were also blessed on the Savior. People used to say, “Savior means we have plenty of bread.”

Yablochny Spas is also called “the first autumns,” that is, welcoming autumn. From Spas, which was the border between the summer and autumn cycles of work, in some places they began sowing winter crops and digging early potatoes. Fairs were held on this day.

People considered Spas to be the day of departure of storks. It was noticed that if storks began to prepare for departure a week before the Savior, then the winter would be early and frosty, and the spring would be warm; if after the Savior, the autumn will be warm, the winter will be late, and the spring will be cold. The departure of storks indicated the approach of winter, and proverbs resembled “The Savior has come - and summer is from us”, “Savior - take mittens in reserve.”

Spas nut

The third Spas (Spas “on the canvas”, nut Spas) is celebrated on August 29. The festival was established in honor of the transfer of the miraculous image of the Lord to Constantinople.

There is a legend that during the earthly life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Edessa became seriously ill. Having learned about the miracles of the Savior, the prince sent his artist to him with a letter, asking him to heal him from a serious illness. When the artist saw the face of the Savior, he wanted to depict his features on canvas, but all his efforts were in vain - he could not catch the features of the Lord’s face.

Noticing this, Jesus Christ ordered water to be brought, washed himself, wiped his face with a handkerchief, and to the surprise of those present, the image of Christ immediately appeared on the handkerchief. Jesus Christ sent this miraculous image of himself to the prince along with a letter in which he wrote: “Blessed are you for believing in me without seeing me. After my ascension, my disciple will come to you and completely heal you from your illness.”

The prince, having received the image and bowed to it, was almost completely cured of his illness. At first the image was kept in Edessa, and was later transferred to Constantinople. This transfer took place on August 29.

The third Savior is called the nut Savior, because by this day, as a rule, the nuts ripen. In Belarus, hazel (hazel) is considered a sacred plant; it symbolizes cheerfulness and fertility.

People also called the nut Savior the grain Savior, since it meant the end of the harvest and winter sowing - with “dozhinki”, “additional sowings”, and often “sowing”. And there were corresponding sayings among the people: “It’s good if the Savior is on the canvas, and the bread is in the threshing floor!”, “The third Savior stored up bread,” “If the third Savior is good, there will be kvass in winter.” There were signs: “Swallows fly away three times, three times the Savior,” “If the crane flies to the third Savior, then it will be frosty on Pokrov.” On this day, pies and cookies were baked from flour of the new harvest. -0-

Blessed time of year!

With the arrival of the Nut Savior, the time begins for collecting mushrooms and berries in the forests. All holidays are associated precisely with the transition from one season of the year to another. In this way, people learned to maintain consistency in harvesting, were able to properly eat ripened food products, store them for the winter and treat various diseases.

During the Walnut Savior, hazel branches were harvested and put into everyday use as a talisman against evil forces and illness. Hazel is also used for brooms in bathhouses. With their help, many rheumatic and colds are cured.

The power of nature is given to man through fruits!

Nuts, like honey, were especially valued in Rus', since they contain all the power of nature. Tinctures were made from cedar trees, which were subsequently used to heal various diseases of internal organs. In particular, pine nut tincture can improve human immunity. Man uses all the gifts of nature wisely and with the blessing of the Lord, which is why holidays are often associated with Christian celebrations in order to further strengthen faith and spirituality. Many healers observe religious fasts in order to use certain ingredients in their recipes that ripen in certain seasons of the year.

Thus, the gifts of nature help strengthen human health, strengthen the spirit of Orthodox Christians, and in addition, they are a symbol of the unification of the people.

Ancient Science of the White Race

Spas is the ancient science of the White Race, transmitted to us from the depths of centuries just for such a turning point as ours. The priests of the past understood that the time would come when almost everything would be lost and forgotten, and it would be important to return science and make it understandable to modern people.

Savior in the stories of my grandfather

1771 the month of August (on Spas).

For seven long days and nights, on the secret island of Gard, on the Southern Bug River, the Small Circle of Cossacks - Characterniks - was noisy and arguing. The elders of thirteen Cossack families, masters of the ancient Slavic system of knowledge “Savior the Great,” argued until they were hoarse about how to live further.

Everyone understood that “Katka” would disperse the Zaporozhye Cossacks and destroy the Sich. There is no need for her to be a stronghold of liberty and freedom in the empire. But that was not the main thing for those gathered. The main thing is what will happen to the knowledge that the birth had. This is not ordinary knowledge, it contains the wisdom of the entire Slavic family. From the grandfather and great-grandfather, to the children and grandchildren, the Science of “SPAS” was passed on.

In difficult times of battles and campaigns, Savior always came to the rescue. Anticipating the persecution of the Cossacks and the enslavement of Ukraine, the elders convened the Small Circle. Everyone understood that if Science fell into the hands of the greedy and arrogant boyars and their hangers-on, then a lot of grief would happen in Ukraine. This knowledge can cause irreparable harm if it falls into the wrong hands. The defection of the foreman of the Don Cossacks is still fresh in memory. Using SCIENCE for money and privilege, they carried out punitive expeditions against their people, carrying out the will of the court and senate. A lot of people died then.

As sad as it was, the Zaporozhye Cossacks - characterniks - had to send specially trained flying squads “Falcons” to the Don in order to punish the apostates with death and “take away” the knowledge of the battle Savior. All that remained were healing, religious movements and varieties of hand-to-hand combat. The most ardent opponents of the “Muscovites” demanded the destruction of all knowledge; “Let everything go, otherwise the Muscovites will not get it!” “They grabbed their sabers, shouted, proving to each other that they were right, and finally decided; “Each clan is fluent in one of the types of the GREAT SAVE and therefore each clan preserves its knowledge by passing it on within the clan. And when Ukraine becomes free, independent, we will revive SCIENCE through common efforts.

Some clans destroyed their knowledge and took an oath never to reveal the Savior to anyone. They were not reproached - the time was troubled and everyone decides for themselves what to do. True, SPAS punished these clans - they became extinct for refusing to preserve and transmit SCIENCE.

More than 200 years have passed. Fulfilling the order of their ancestors, the keepers of knowledge about the Savior, the Cossack clans - the characterniks Skulsky and Topor, began to transmit SCIENCE. In 1999, the Nikolaev regional public, human rights organization “Savior of the Black Sea Region” was created, where training in the Savior, Slavic martial arts and historical fencing takes place.

My vision of salvation

For a long time trying to find words to describe what Spas is, I realized that Spas cannot be expressed in words. I could describe history for a long time, remember the distant exploits of the Characterists who wielded the Savior, but this would be just another repetition of beautiful epics.

Unlike new-fangled eastern and other philosophies, Spas is a living and natural way of thinking and creating. It is like a mountain river, constantly changing. Having no canons and rules. Savior is limited only by your imagination and conscience. In salvation there is no talk and philosophizing about lofty matters, various gurus and enlightened teachers, because nothing can replace your own experience anyway.

It was the experience of many generations, accustomed to constant survival in border conditions, that gave birth to Spas. Having absorbed a special Ukrainian character, a cheerful, ironic attitude towards the world, and most importantly, resourcefulness. These qualities helped preserve the childishness of the mind until old age. Man lived his entire life in harmony with nature, remaining its beloved child, and under the constant care of the entire surrounding world. For such a person, any difficulty on the path of life is perceived as another interesting game. Everything was easy and extremely simple.

Many, having read these lines, will not recognize the current Ukrainian in the description. Man has become a slave to his own civilization. For many years, the ability to think and make decisions on our own has been eradicated from us. From childhood, falling under the influence of a harsh educational machine - kindergarten, school, college, work... Modern man lives in constant fear. First in front of educators, then in front of teachers, professors, bosses, the police, even in front of a janitor and a store clerk. Without stopping in the eternal race for money, which he still lacks. Today's living conditions have only worsened moral decay and enslavement. We are forced to let stress into our lives just by having the wrong attitude towards it. We forbid ourselves to be happy.

A person living in Spas lives in the same living conditions as everyone else, without going to monasteries, sectarianism and hermitage. The only difference is in the way of thinking and perceiving the world around us. For a rescue person, stress turns into distress (useful stress). Everything is perceived as a game. And what doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger and more experienced. We again know how to enjoy the simplest things like a child. Looking at the world with eyes wide open.

Training in Spas brings back the connection with nature. Developing the ability to listen to yourself and the whole world around you. To do this, first of all, sharpening what is given to us all by nature, the basic five senses (sight, touch, hearing, smell, taste). After this, the sixth sense, intuition, wakes up by itself. Man again becomes a child of nature, and a son of God. Falling under the constant tutelage of higher powers, and working with them in tandem. Only good things happen to such a person, even what would previously have been perceived as a terrible incident becomes simply a useful life lesson, without damaging the psyche and falling into a long depression.

All this is not fantasy and is inherent in each of us. The only thing that prevents us from mastering our own abilities is our laziness. And the belief instilled by Eastern Gurus and Western cinema that such opportunities can only be acquired by following the path shown by them, long self-torture, and deprivation, that this is only available to a select few... In fact, this is available to everyone, we are all born children of God, slaves circumstances we become later. Although the sons and daughters of God should have grown like him, just as a lion grows from a lion cub, and a tiger from a tiger cub.

The Spas worldview system will be a useful impetus for the spiritual, energetic and physical development of any person, regardless of gender, age and religious beliefs.
