Icon of Nicholas 2: history of creation
The history of the iconographic perpetuation of the Russian martyr Tsar is amazing and similar to a legend.
It reflected one of the sad paradoxes of the 20th century. The icon of Nicholas 2, the last Russian emperor, was painted even before his canonization in Russia - on the other side of the ocean, in the USA. In 1997, the Russian emigrant Iya Shmit (nee Podmoshenskaya) had a dream in which she saw an icon depicting the emperor - a martyr in grand ducal robes. A little earlier, the woman received a small inheritance, and she intended to donate it to some good cause. When she woke up, she already knew what she would do with the money. Iya Shmit turned to icon painter Pavel Tikhomirov, who lives in California, with a request to paint the icon of Nicholas 2, which she saw in a dream. They began to study the photo of the king, hoping to find a suitable subject and a facial expression similar to the one the woman had seen.
The icon of the long-suffering Russian emperor was painted several years before the martyrs of the royal family were canonized. To the right of the sovereign is depicted Nicholas the Wonderworker, his heavenly patron, and to the left is the righteous Job the Long-Suffering. The inscription below says that “this holy icon” was created to glorify the Martyr Tsar in Russia.
History of the miraculous list
In Kazan, after a fire in 1579, a holy face miraculously appeared. It was discovered by the little girl Matrona, the daughter of a merchant, who in a dream saw the Mother of God, who ordered her and her mother to go to the fire and get the icon from under the rubble. Subsequently, the found image of the Saint, to the surprise of people, was very bright and beautiful, and the colors were fresh.
At the same place where the valuable find was discovered, a monastery for women was erected, and the Divine painting itself was transported to the Assumption Cathedral (Kazan). However, because of its jewelry, the miraculous face was stolen in 1904 and then destroyed. Today, only copies of the Holy Image have survived.
War against love fever
Prince Nicholas was only 23 years old. Soon the relatives realized that the guy not only seriously fell in love, but was also squandering his fortune. Fanny was an American and her feelings were quite compatible with self-interest.
The relatives decided to cool the ardent lover with war. The guy could have lost his life, but the honor of the royal family was more valuable. A dancer, and even an American, had no place in the Romanov family. And Nikolai was clearly determined to get married.
Young Nikolai had the rank of colonel, and of course he did not refuse to go to Khiva. In 1873, he took part in a military expedition and even behaved heroically, for which he was awarded.
How does the icon of the Romanov royal family help?
For each person bearing the name of one of the royal passion-bearers, he (or she) will become their patron saint. These names are: Nikolai, Alexandra, Alexey, Olga, Tatyana, Maria and Anastasia.
Prayer in front of such an icon helps to maintain mutual respect between generations and close relationships between relatives, raise children in piety, loyalty to Orthodox principles and patriotism, and prayer in front of the miraculous myrrh-streaming icon of Nicholas II helps to find healing.
Veneration of the icon “Romanov Passion-Bearers” July 4/17 – the day of the death of the royal family and January 25/February 7 – Celebration of the Council of New Martyrs who suffered for the Christian faith after the 1917 revolution.
We underestimate the help of the family of Nicholas II
I love and honor the holy royal martyrs very much. I prayed to them to meet my future husband. And I met him almost immediately.
At some stage, a crisis and great discord began in the family. It came to a divorce. Again I prayed to the King and his family. She asked me to save my marriage and not lose my God-given husband. And Nicholas II talked some sense into me. I feel their prayerful help to our family.
Last year, I even specially chose the date of the operation on the day of remembrance of the Royal Martyrs. And the operation went better than the doctors had planned according to the most favorable prognosis.
At home, in addition to their icon, there is also a portrait of the royal family. This is my ideal family that I strive for.
It is very sad that many families do not turn to the royal family in prayer. We underestimate his help. And he will definitely help. Ask for his prayers!

Icon of the Romanov royal family
One of the most tragic pages in the history of Russia in the 20th century was the murder of the royal family, dictated, as the Bolsheviks claimed, by “revolutionary necessity.” The victims of this inhuman logic were not only Nicholas II, who became the last representative of the three-hundred-year-old Romanov dynasty, but also his wife, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna, their four daughters aged from 17 to 23 years and the heir to the throne, 14-year-old Tsarevich Alexei. People who remained faithful to them in this last hour were also killed: both family members and those from their immediate circle.
“I have been given enormous power to help, but no one asks”
I am a father of many children. An artist by profession. And, as expected in this profession, I live from order to order. And this means either empty or thick.
In the summer I was visiting a large believing family. They often visit Yekaterinburg on Tsar's days. We were sitting at the table as a guest.
At the next table there was a portrait of the Emperor, under which there was a signature: “I have been given enormous power to help, but no one asks.” I thought about it. Then he asked the hostess if she had an akathist to the Royal Passion-Bearers. She answered in the affirmative. I took it, flipped through it and read a few lines. And suddenly the mobile phone rings in my pocket. Customer! When I completed the work, I gave the earnings to my wife for the children.
What a miracle! From now on I often pray to Nicholas II and his family with a request to feed their large family, and they help!

About the fate of the icon
The icon depicting the Russian Tsar is today kept at Ia Schmidt’s home. The woman began selling lithographs made from the image so that they would help Russians experiencing difficulties abroad. Several lithographs ended up in the possession of Iya Dmitrevna’s brother, abbot Herman, who served in the Ryazan St. Nicholas almshouse. He brought them to Russia. One of them in the St. Nicholas almshouse (Ryazan) was seen by O.I. Belchenko, who became its custodian. And this happened eighty years after the renunciation, on March 15, 1997. Since then, on his initiative, the image of the sovereign began to wander around the churches of Russia, never staying anywhere for long.
One of the miracles associated with the image of the emperor, according to witnesses, is the streaming of myrrh from his icon, which occurs on days of special celebrations or memorable historical events, accompanied by an extraordinary unearthly fragrance. The image in front of which the akathists were read flowed myrrh for several months. For example, on February 28, 1999, on the holiday of the Triumph of Orthodoxy, the lithograph was transferred to the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker located in Pyzhi. The icon was received here with special solemnity: a carpet was laid out in front of it, all the bells were rung, and the parishioners performed prayers at this time. According to eyewitnesses, the image of the Emperor flowed strongly with myrrh that day.

Children of Nicholas II
Olga Nikolaevna
Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna, 1910 (1895-1918)
The eldest of the children of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. The only one of the four sisters could openly object to her father and mother and was very reluctant to submit to her parents’ will if circumstances required it. French teacher and friend of the imperial family Pierre Gilliard noted that Olga learned the lesson material better and faster than her sisters. The emperor read telegrams coming from the front to his daughter and conferred with her.
On the night of July 16-17, 1918, she was shot along with her family in Yekaterinburg.

Maria Nikolaevna
Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna, 1914 (1899 - 1918)
The third daughter of Emperor Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorovna. She was a much calmer child than her older sisters. In character, according to eyewitnesses, she was more like her mother. Together with her sisters, Maria wept bitterly on the day the First World War was declared. It was impossible for her to understand why Germany, where the beloved “Uncle Willy” (German Emperor Wilhelm II) ruled, suddenly became an enemy.

Anastasia Nikolaevna
Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna (1901 - 1918)
The fourth and youngest daughter of Emperor Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna. She was quite an active and even noisy child, for which she received the nickname “shibzdik.” She was not diligent in her studies, she did not like grammar, she wrote with many errors, and with childish spontaneity she called arithmetic “disgusting.” Together with her sister Maria, she became the patroness of the hospital after the outbreak of the First World War. On the night of July 16-17, 1918, she was shot along with her family in Yekaterinburg.
After her death, about 30 women declared themselves “the miraculously saved Grand Duchess,” but sooner or later they were all exposed as impostors.

Alexey Nikolaevich
Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich (1904 - 1918)
The youngest of the children of Emperor Nicholas II and his only son. The long-awaited heir on his mother's side was given a very serious disease, hemophilia, the carriers of which were some of the daughters and granddaughters of Queen Victoria of England. It was on the basis of the fight against Alexei’s illness that Grigory Rasputin became close to the royal family, relations with whom were the cause of numerous rumors and disapproval, both among the nobles and the common people. On the night of July 16-17, 1918, he was shot along with his family in Yekaterinburg. Rumors about the possible salvation of the prince from execution began to circulate almost immediately. At the moment, the number of “allegedly saved” heirs of Nicholas II is more than 80.
How the icons of the king and the royal family are protected
The reign of Nicholas II can be assessed differently, but his high moral principles have never been questioned. He was a wonderful family man, lived on his own and raised his children in the spirit of piety and fidelity to Christ's commandments, was engaged in charity work and made generous donations for the construction of churches. Therefore, they pray to the icon of Nicholas II for the protection and preservation of peace in the family, for deliverance from family problems, from problems with children and loved ones, but not only. They ask her to protect her from the enemies of our Motherland, including those trying to undermine its Orthodox foundations; strengthen patriotic feelings.
The meaning of the icon of the Lord Pantocrator
The significance of this face is difficult to overestimate. It contains a reminder of the heavenly court that awaits everyone and the presence of mercy and kindness. She helps believers overcome all difficulties and trials to achieve the best. This divine image recalls the unity of the human and spiritual, as well as the sacrifice that Christ showed for the sake of people.
The icon of the Almighty helps people find solace in sorrow, peace, strength to overcome obstacles, and peace.
Saying prayers in front of this divine image, people give thanks for support and help, and also wish to receive blessings for future affairs.
About the death of the last king
According to historical data, the last Emperor Nicholas II during the revolution was arrested and shot in the basement of the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg on the night of June 16-17, 1918. Four servants and associates were executed along with the sovereign's family.
Interesting! After a while, one of the Emperor’s close associates, who died with him in the Ipatiev House, will also be canonized. We are talking about the doctor Evgeniy Botkin.
The tsar's family itself consisted of seven people: Emperor Nikolai Romanov, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna and their five children - son Alexei and daughters Anastasia, Olga, Maria, Tatyana. At the time of the execution, the Tsar himself was 50 years old, his wife was 46, and the children were from 13 to 22 years old.
Family of Emperor Nicholas II
The news of the bloody massacre of the entire imperial family very quickly spread among the people. Almost immediately after the execution, sentiments began to emerge, which later strengthened and led to the canonization of Nicholas II.
Thus, Patriarch Tikhon himself, at the service closest to him after the shooting, said in his sermon that the whole Church mourns what happened
The Patriarch drew attention to the fact that Nicholas II and his entire family could go abroad, where they could ensure a calm and safe life for themselves. But he did not do this, but “remained to suffer together with Russia”
The Primate of the Church blessed all clergy to regularly hold services to commemorate the murdered.
We advise you to study the Icon of the Mother of God “Sovereign”
Important! It is the fact that Nicholas II did not flee after his formal abdication of the throne that speaks of his sincere and genuine love for his Motherland. The people's veneration of the Royal Family as martyrs gradually increased.
It should be noted that canonically the last king and his relatives cannot be considered Christian martyrs, since their execution was not associated with the need to renounce their faith. In other words, no one demanded that they renounce Christ, and even if we assume that they would have done this, the death sentence would not have been canceled. That is why later the Royal Family will be canonized not as martyrs, but as passion-bearers

The common people did not really understand the intricacies of church canons, so the king was revered as a martyr. Often a photograph of the entire murdered Royal Family was located next to the icons, in the home iconostasis. Of course, in those years the question of official canonization could not be raised, but veneration among the people was constantly increasing.
Icon of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers
The Royal Family gained special veneration among emigrants and parishioners of the Orthodox Church Abroad. Many who, due to the political situation, were forced to leave their homeland, loved the emperor very much and worshiped him. After the violent death, this attitude only intensified.
How to pray in front of the Holy Image
In order for the Mother of God to hear your request, you must pray to her correctly. This can be done both in the temple and at home. If at home you want to ask a holy image for help, it is best to pray in the morning:
- After you wake up, wash yourself well with water, cross your hands in advance and set yourself up for positive emotions;
- Calm down and get all annoying and negative thoughts out of your head;
- Light the candles, kneel down and then begin the ceremony;
- The quantity is not the most important thing, but what is important is that all the words of the prayer are spoken sincerely, from a pure heart;
- After you have prayed, you can express your request to the Mother of God. But remember that a request will not be heard if it contains at least one negative wish.
Prayers to the “Kazan” Icon of the Mother of God
Oh, Most Holy Lady and Lady Theotokos! With fear, faith and love, falling before Your honorable icon, we pray to You: do not turn Your face away from those who come running to You. Pray, merciful Mother, to Thy Son and our God, the Lord Jesus Christ, to preserve our country peacefully and to keep His holy Church unshakable from unbelief, heresies and schism. There are no imams of any other help, no imams of other hope, unless You, Most Pure Virgin, are You the all-powerful Helper and Intercessor of Christians. Deliver all who pray to You with faith from the falls of sin, from the slander of evil people, from all temptations, sorrows, troubles and from vain death. Grant us the spirit of contrition, humility of heart, purity of thoughts, correction of sinful lives and the remission of sins, so that we all sing gratefully of Your greatness, we will be worthy of the Heavenly Kingdom, and there with all the saints we will glorify the Most Honorable and Magnificent Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Second prayer:
Oh, Most Holy Lady Theotokos, Queen of Heaven and earth, the highest angel and archangel and all creatures, the most honest, pure Virgin Mary, good Helper to the world, and affirmation for all people, and deliverance in all their needs! Look now, O All-Merciful Lady, upon Thy servants, Praying to You with a tender soul and a contrite heart, falling with tears to You and worshiping Your most pure and wholesome image, and asking for Your help and intercession. Oh, All-Merciful and Most Merciful Virgin Pure Mother of God! Look, O Lady, at Thy people: for we are sinners and imams of no other help than to You and from You, Christ our God born. You are our intercessor and representative. You are protection for the offended, joy for the sorrowing, refuge for the orphans, guardian for widows, glory for virgins, joy for those who weep, visitation for the sick, healing for the weak, salvation for sinners. For this reason, O Mother of God, we resort to You, and hold Your Most Pure Image with the Eternal One in Your hand As an infant, our Lord Jesus Christ, looking at You, we offer tender singing and cry: have mercy on us, Mother of God, and fulfill our request, for all things are possible through Your intercession, for glory is due to You now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
God bless you!
Fatal passion and theft
But alas, the war did not cool the ardent feelings. When Nikolai got home, the first thing he did was see Fanny Lear and even went with her on a tour of European countries.
All this cost a lot of money. Parents limited Nikolai’s access to the fortune so that he would not go around the world.
But the passion was so painful that nothing stopped the prince. He was ready to support Fanny at any cost.
As a result, in 1874 the unthinkable happened - diamonds disappeared from the frame of the icon in the Marble Palace. The icon served as a blessing and was dear to Nicholas I himself.
A scandal broke out. Moreover, when it became clear that only members of the royal family and trusted servants had access to the relic.
With a crown on his head, but more often without it
There are icons in which Alexandra Feodorovna is depicted alone. Her veneration today, one might say, is growing among the people, especially after the publication of letters and diaries. At the same time, again we see many options, saying that there is no common understanding of how to portray the Empress. On some icons she wears a royal robe, on others - a low-necked dress, sometimes Alexandra is depicted with a crown on her head, but more often - without it. There are many icons where the Empress appears in the clothes of a sister of mercy, which emphasizes her humble service during the First World War.
In the same way, grand duchesses are depicted in the clothes of sisters of mercy, although more often there are icons where they are represented in dresses typical of the early twentieth century. It must be said that grand duchesses are rarely written separately, with the exception of the so-called. "measured icons".
The image of Tsarevich Alexei can be found much more often on individual icons. And here too we see a wide variety of options. The Tsarevich appears either in a princely attire, or in a simple tunic or sailor suit, or even in a Cossack uniform, or in a white or red (symbols of martyrdom) tunic or in a red cloak. Sometimes he is depicted with a crown on his head, but more often without it. Often a cross is depicted in the hands of the Tsarevich. Some icons depict the Sovereign and the Heir to the Throne together. There are also icons in circulation where the Tsarevich is depicted on the knees of Grigory Rasputin. But this is, of course, iconography formed in a marginal environment, far from the true understanding of holiness.
However, most icons present us with the entire royal family as a single group. But here we also see a great variety of options. For example, the famous icon painter Alexander Sokolov painted an icon where the Tsar and the Tsarevich are depicted in tunics and without crowns, and the Tsarina and princesses are in conventionally princely dresses. What is emphasized here is not the ceremonial nature of the image, but rather the passion-bearing one: the Emperor without a crown, since he renounced it, the Tsarevich without a crown, because he is no longer the heir, but the queen and princesses in princely robes, which indicates a connection with the ancient Russian tradition, for which The rite of passion-bearers was characteristic.
In the Yekaterinburg Church on Blood there is an icon where the queen and princesses are dressed as sisters of mercy (author Elena Vodicheva), which symbolizes the merciful nature of serving the people, for the sake of which the royal family went to great lengths, becoming hostages of the revolutionary situation in the country.
An image in which everyone, including the king and queen, is dressed in white clothes has become widespread, which refers us to the images of the Apocalypse: “these are those who came from the great tribulation; they washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (Rev. 7:14). The whiteness of the clothes is emphasized by a red background, further revealing the martyrdom aspect of the image. We can see one of the variants of such iconography in the Sretensky Monastery.
At the same time, the Sretensky icon in the upper part depicts the Lord Jesus Christ seated on a throne, before whom the royal family stands in prayer. This icon was called “The Opening of the Fifth Seal,” which emphasizes the apocalyptic nature of the image, reinforced by the image of the Supreme Judge. However, despite the grandeur of the plan, this image is not entirely accurate theologically, for the Fifth Seal in the Revelation of John the Theologian designates souls killed for the word of God, and the death of the royal family was not directly related to the confession of faith. This is where there is a very fine line between martyrdom and passion-bearing, which was taken into account during the canonization of the royal family.
We advise you to study the Prayer to the Venerable Cross of the Lord
Sometimes you can find an icon in which the royal family is represented against the background of a cross, but more often crosses are depicted in the hands of the holy passion-bearers, and this detail clearly indicates their feat.
However, most often the royal family is depicted without taking into account the martyrdom or passion-bearing meaning, simply as an image of canonized power. Therefore, they are dressed in princely or royal robes, ermine robes, presented with crowns or crowns on their heads; all this glorifies not so much the feat of the passion-bearers as the royalty of these saints.
When is the celebration in honor of the holy face?
This divine holiday is usually celebrated twice a year:
- July 21, new style (July 8, old style). After the little girl Matrona had visions in her sleep, this event was defined as an important Orthodox holiday, “The Appearance of the Image of the Mother of God,” celebrated annually since the 16th century;
- November 4 (October 22). In the autumn of 1612, Moscow was liberated by the Russian army led by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky and Kuzma Minin from the Polish-Lithuanian occupiers.
Before the decisive battle, the Russian regiments prayed to the divine image, thanks to which the victory was won. In honor of the Saint’s intercession, a holiday was established, celebrated since 1649 throughout Rus'.
After the October Revolution, November 4 ceased to be a non-working day, but the tradition was restored in 2005, and the holiday was called “National Unity Day.”
Every year on November 4 and July 21, the same service is held where a sermon is read and the following kontakion sounds:
“Let us come, people, to this quiet and good refuge, to the ambulance, ready and warm salvation, to the protection of the Virgin. Let us hasten to prayer and strive for repentance: for the Most Pure Theotokos exudes boundless mercies to us, advances to our aid and delivers Her well-behaved and God-fearing servants from all troubles and evils.”
Icon of the Mother of God of Tenderness of Lokot
From April 1 to April 8, the Lokot Icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness” will be in the Smolensk Church.
From February to June, in the churches of the Oryol Metropolis, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony of Oryol and Bolkhov, there will be a miraculous icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness” from the village of Lokot. In 1999, the icon began to stream myrrh. This is a two-sided miraculous myrrh-streaming image.
The history of the appearance of the icon.
The shrine appeared in one pious family in the village of Lokot, the former estate of Grand Duke Mikhail Romanov, brother of Tsar Nicholas II.
A resident of the village of Lokot, Bryansk region, Natalya Shishkova, as usual, went to the local department store and saw calendars with the image of the Mother of God lying neglected on the store counter.
She made a remark to the saleswoman that even though the calendars are not church calendars, since there is an image of the face of the Mother of God, it is unworthy to store it in this form, but it is necessary to store it in a proper way.
To which the saleswoman said that these calendars were expired, and anyway no one would buy them and they would have to be thrown away.
Natalya went home, and on the way the thought occurred to her that she had denounced the saleswoman, but she herself just needed to buy this calendar. She went back and bought the last two calendars of the Mother of God with the Tenderness icon. I cut off the numbers and hung them on the wall at home and at work using regular push pins.
As in the case of the Iveron Montreal Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she at first decided that someone had spilled cologne or perfume in the house, but when she began to look for the source of the aroma, she discovered that a large, greasy, fragrant stain had formed on the face of the Mother of God.
She invited a priest, who, having looked, noticed that now this often happens, when not only in churches, but also in the homes of lay people, images begin to stream myrrh, that you don’t need to pay attention to it, you look - it streams myrrh and will pass.
But the flow of myrrh and the fragrance did not stop; moreover, the flow of myrrh increased over time in such quantity that the myrrh flowed from the image onto the wall.
Seeing this, the priest said that this must be approached with caution, in case this miracle is not from God: “Let’s pray, and if during Great Lent this miracle stops, then this miracle is not God’s.” But on Easter, in their house, all the icons that they have, and there are quite a lot of them, were filled with myrrh. It became clear that this was truly a miracle and they decided to place this image in an icon case, in a frame
It became clear that this was truly a miracle and they decided to place this image in an icon case.
They took it off the wall and, to their amazement, discovered this: you know that myrrh is an oily substance that saturates the paper right through, and since the entire image was covered with myrrh, it would seem that the calendar should also soak up this world through and through.
But when they took it off the wall, they saw that on the reverse side only the face of the Mother of God was saturated with the world! The rest of the surface of the calendar remained as white and dry as before.
The study of miracles associated with the icon of “Tenderness” is carried out by a special expert group on miraculous phenomena in the Russian Orthodox Church under the leadership of Professor P.V. Florensky. Over the past 19 years, there have been many cases of healing and grace-filled help in everyday needs of people who came to her to worship.
