Church of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers

- Orthodox Church of the All Saints Deanery of the Moscow Diocese. Laid in memory of Emperor Nicholas II and his family. This is the first temple in Moscow dedicated to the holy royal passion-bearers.

History[edit]

The decision to build the Church of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers in 6th Novopodmoskovny Lane was made on April 4, 2011 during public hearings. Later, a number of residents of nearby houses actively opposed this. The residents' dissatisfaction was caused by the fact that the temple was built on a small plot quite close to residential buildings. In addition, the temple is located on the site of a former parking lot for 43 cars. Local residents claimed that they were not properly informed about the public hearings on the construction of the temple, and therefore filed a lawsuit to cancel them. The complaint of residents of the Voikovsky district was considered in the Moscow City Duma. As a result of a compromise with the protesters, the design height of the temple was reduced from 26 to 23 meters.

The construction site of the future temple was fenced off in November 2011. In the spring of 2012, a temporary wooden chapel was built there, and it was consecrated on Easter. Since a heating main and gas pipes pass through the construction site, the temple design was designed so as not to affect communications. On March 8, 2013, the head of the House of Romanov, Maria Romanova, visited the construction site of the temple. On April 28, 2013, Archbishop Mark of Yegoryevsk laid a capsule with soil taken from the site of the execution of the royal family into the foundation of the church under construction. On July 17, 2014, on the patronal feast day, the first Liturgy was celebrated at the construction site of the temple. The next day, crosses and domes were erected on the temple. On Christmas Day, January 7, 2015, the first liturgy took place within the walls of the church, after which services became regular. Although in March 2015, State Duma deputy and adviser to the mayor of Moscow Vladimir Resin announced the completion of the construction of the temple, construction is still ongoing. The temple is not connected to communications (there is no sewage system, constant water supply, electricity and heating), the interior walls are being decorated. The project also plans to build a clergy house next to the temple.

Temple abbots

The rector of the temple under construction is Priest Dimitry Baburin. Previously, the priest was on staff at the Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the same area. Therefore, a community of parishioners began to form around the priest long before the construction of the new temple complex began.

Dmitry Anatolyevich Baburin was born in 1977. After school, he entered a higher educational institution (MSTU MAMI) and successfully graduated in 2002. But Dmitry’s life turned in a completely different direction. A few years later, he finally decided to take the path of serving God. The deacon's ordination took place on May 28, 2006 in the Intercession Church of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, performed by Archbishop Evgeny Vereisky. Then he studied at the seminary (MDS, 2009) and academy (MDA, 2012). The priestly ordination took place on March 15, 2008.

Father Dimitri's name day is May 28 and November 8. There are awards:

  • 2009 – leg guard;
  • 2012 – Kamilavka;
  • 2015 – pectoral cross.

O. Dimitry is a good organizer. He cares about his flock, the spiritual well-being of people, and successfully carries out the construction he has begun. Repeatedly, parishioners of the temple, together with their priest, visited holy places and held religious processions.

Current state[edit]

Architecture, appearance, interior decoration, shrines of the monastery complex

All churches were originally built of wood, just as churches were built in ancient times in Rus'. However, the monastery, located in a pine forest, has been subject to fires several times over the years. As a result, instead of one temple that completely burned down in 2010, a new stone one was built, made in the same style. All buildings resemble Russian towers.

Temple of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers

The very first church of the monastery took only three months to build and was consecrated on New Year’s Eve 2001. It is located closest of all the churches to the mine where the bodies of the emperor, empress and their five children were dumped. Its second name is the Royal Temple. The icons for the iconostasis, made in the style of the 15th century, were selected carefully and reasonably.

Here are located:

  • Feodorovskaya icon of the Mother of God , which recalls that before this image in 1613, the first king of the Romanov family, Mikhail Fedorovich, took vows.
  • Icon of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers , which depicts all the members of the destroyed family, who, pressing their shoulders closely to each other, pray to the Almighty. Believers consider the icon miraculous and, bowing before the image, ask for intercession.
  • The image of Grand Duchess Elizabeth and nun Varvara , who were brutally murdered in July 1918 at the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent.
  • Icon of Nicholas the Wonderworker , the heavenly patron of the Russian Emperor.
  • The image of Saints Seraphim of Sarov and Sergius of Radonezh , especially revered saints by the royal family.

The temple has a belfry with eight bells, seven of which are named after each family member. The bells bear icons depicting the emperor, his wife and their children. The smallest bell is Tsarevich Alexei, followed by the bells of his sisters and parents as they get larger. The eighth and largest bell is the family bell. Here is an icon with all those who died in Ganina Yama.

The most precious relic of the monastery is the reliquary cross with the relics of 40 of God's righteous people.

This shrine, made at the beginning of the 18th century and formerly belonging to the Shakhovsky princes, was presented by them to the House of Romanov. The cross was in exile with the family; it was slowly given into the hands of the nun Seraphima. The keeper of the relic was Archpriest Grigory Ponomarev, to whom the holy thing was handed over.

In 2001, the reliquary cross was brought to the monastery by a procession of the cross and placed in a special reliquary in the church.

Another shrine is a ring decorated with a monogram. It belonged to Princess Olga, who died along with her parents, sisters and brother in the Ipatiev House.

Temple of St. Seraphim of Sarov

The Monastery of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers Ganina Yama, continuing its development, built a second church in the name of St. Seraphim of Sarov, which was consecrated in June 2001. The royal couple especially revered this saint, before whose relics they prayed in the Diveyevo Monastery for the birth of an heir. Tsarevich Alexei was born, strengthening his parents’ faith in the Lord.

The lower chapel of the temple is almost always inaccessible to parishioners. It is consecrated in the name of the icon of the Mother of God “Tenderness” and is monastic. Its doors open to the laity only on major holidays.

The shrine of the temple is an ancient image of Elder Seraphim, which was brought to the monastery in very poor condition with barely visible outlines. Here his miraculous self-healing began.

Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh

This temple, consecrated in July 2001, also built in the style of Russian temple architecture, is somewhat different from the other churches of the monastery, at the same time reminiscent of a Chinese pagoda. It is believed that the author of the project took the St. Nicholas Church in Harbin as a basis. Its peculiarity is also that it is multi-tiered, which is not typical for Russian churches. The height of the structure is 27 m.

Before the holy elder Sergius of Radonezh, and after his death, before his image, according to custom, all Russian princes, and later tsars, bowed their heads, asking for blessings on great deeds important to the state. The imperial family revered this tradition and often turned to the saint for help, so the third temple built was dedicated to his memory.

The main shrine of the temple is a cross with the relics of a saint. In addition, here is a copy of the Theodore Icon of the Mother of God, made during the life of the emperor.

Temple of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God

The gate temple in honor of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God, revered by all Russian tsars, was consecrated in September 2001. This image was always installed at the entrance to a city or monastery, which is why its second name is “The Goalkeeper.” Since ancient times, according to custom, the icon was located in front of the entrance to the Moscow Kremlin, in a specially built chapel on Red Square.

The Monastery of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers Ganina Yama received the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God from the masters of Athos. It was solemnly delivered and placed over the gate. Now, for the convenience of pilgrims, it has been placed in the St. Nicholas Church of the monastery.

Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

This multi-domed temple with 17 domes and crosses on their tops was created by the architect as a reminder of the date of the death of the royal family. The height of the structure is also 17 m.

The icon of the heavenly patron of Emperor Nicholas II was always with him. The deeply religious emperor parted with her only shortly before his death, handing her over unnoticed by the guards to a nun of the Novo-Tikhvin Monastery. Nowadays this shrine is kept in the temple.

There are also several more images with the face of the saint, donated to the temple by believers. Each of them has its own story. The relics of the holy righteous are also kept in the St. Nicholas Church.

Temple of the Icon of the Mother of God "Sovereign"

The temple, consecrated in 2002, was erected in honor of the “Sovereign” icon of Our Lady, which was first revealed to the people on March 15, 1917, when Nicholas II signed the abdication of the royal throne. A troubled time of anarchy began in Russia, and the Mother of God, with the Power in her hands, became the only defender of Russia.

The wooden temple burned down in a fire in 2013. The brethren quickly cleared the place of the fire, and now a new stone temple stands in the same place. This is the largest monastery church, its height is 48 m.

Temple of Righteous Job the Long-Suffering

The seventh temple in 2003 was named in honor of the righteous man who maintained his faith despite all the suffering he suffered. The Russian Orthodox Church honors the memory of Job the Long-Suffering on May 19, the day the last Russian emperor was born.

Nicholas II took this sign of fate seriously and repeatedly told those close to him that he was ready to withstand all the difficulties in store for him.

The temple is closed to parishioners; only the monastic brethren can pray here.

Worship cross

The Monastery of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers was formed around the N7 mine of the Ganina Yama mine. The first cross was installed here on July 17, 1991. People came here to worship the holy place and ask forgiveness from those who died for the atrocity that our ancestors committed.

In 2003, a new cross appeared at the mine. It is made of oak, the trunk of which was damaged by shell fragments during the tank battle on the Prokhorovsky field near Kursk.

On the marble plaque is a description of the history of the destruction of the remains of family members by “fire and sulfuric acid,” and next to it is Amos’ prophecy about the future punishment of the monsters.

Monuments

Today, three monuments to members of the royal family have been erected on the territory of the monastery. The first of them appeared in 2008; pilgrims from Kyiv brought it with them. A bronze bust of Nicholas II stands at the beginning of the alley that leads to the mine.

The monument to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna was erected three years later in the depths of the alley, as if it points the way to a holy and terrible place.

The royal children stand in a dense group at full height near the N7 shaft; they hold crosses in their hands, indicating the place of worship for believers. The last two monuments were created by sculptor I. Akimov.

According to the authors of the project, all the monuments are compositionally connected by their location along the alley, leading simultaneously to both the Royal Church and the mine. The family, as it were, accompanies the pilgrims’ entire journey.

Abbots

The winter of 2006 was fateful for the church. In early January, parishioners took part in the first service. Then it was carried out by Vladimir Mishchenko.

Two years later, a new rector appeared here, who came from the Kalmyk diocese. Every local resident knows about Lazar Semenov, because thanks to him, it was possible to make a richly decorated large altar and two domes in the shape of an imperial crown. Now they can be seen on the roofs of the central boundary and the high belfry.

From 2021, a new Father, Priest Vitaly Kolesnikov, becomes the rector of the temple.

Current state of the temple

The doors of the church are always open to parishioners and ordinary visitors. Divine services, weddings and other sacred ceremonies regularly take place here.

The majesty of a small wooden temple is created with the help of a high belfry and onion domes.

History of the temple

The laying of the foundation of the church took place on May 18, 2005. But the construction of the temple was delayed. It was originally intended to be made of stone. With the help of investors, a log house was built far from the village, but it could not be assembled for economic reasons - the company went bankrupt. Therefore, the construction was not completed. Parishioners were actively involved in this matter. It was with their donations that the wooden temple of the royal martyrs was erected.

Features of the Temple of the Royal Martyrs

For tourists visiting the church, the following information will be useful:

  • services are conducted in Church Slavonic;
  • two icons kept in the church proved to be miraculous;

Interesting facts and legends

The beginning of the reign of the ancient boyar family in Russia took place in the Ipatiev Monastery of Kostroma, where the ceremony of calling Mikhail Fedorovich, the first of the Romanov dynasty, to the kingdom was performed. From 1613 to 1917, 19 representatives of this family were on the royal and later imperial throne, the last of whom was killed in the Ipatiev House of Yekaterinburg.

The Ipatiev House stood in Yekaterinburg until 1977. The Museum of the Revolution, offices, and city services were located here alternately. In 1975, at a meeting of the USSR Politburo, a decision was made to demolish the mansion. The resolution was secret and not subject to publicity. In September 1977, it was carried out by the first secretary of the Sverdlovsk regional committee B.N. Yeltsin.

The Temple on the Blood was built on this site in memory of the family of the last Russian emperor.

The old mine, where the bodies of the august persons were hidden, was located in 1918 far outside the city. Today, the expanded Ekaterinburg has moved significantly closer to the monastery. They are separated by only 2 km. This fact contributes to more frequent visits to the monastery by parishioners, while the pine forest ensures its privacy.
