Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh

- a temple in the Bibirevo district of Moscow. Built in 1893-1894 in gratitude to God for delivering the inhabitants of Bibirevo from cholera through the prayers of St. Sergius.

History[edit]

The construction of the temple began in 1864, close to the wooden Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is believed that on July 13, 1873, a miracle happened in the village of Bibirevo. During a cholera epidemic, the Miraculous Icon of St. Sergius of Radonezh, which was carried by the monks, broke out of their hands and flew through the air. After this, the epidemic subsided. Since then, the residents of Bibirevo have revered the day of July 13 as a holiday and served a prayer service to Pr. Sergius. The consecration of the Temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh took place in 1894. There was a village around the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, a pond nearby, and the Olshanka River flowed in front of the temple. Between the church and the pond there was a cemetery.

In 1935-1936, the territory of the temple was taken away by a collective farm - the wooden Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary was dismantled, the wood was used to build a cowshed, and a production enterprise was organized in the stone Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh. Only in 1990, the temple and the surrounding area of 1.5 hectares were returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. The church cemetery was destroyed already in the 1960s after Bibirev was included in Moscow and its subsequent development.

Now a new temple complex is being built on the territory of the temple in the name of the Council of Moscow Saints.

The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church addressed the believers with the Primate's word.

His Holiness the Patriarch thanked the rector of the newly consecrated church, Hegumen Sergius (Rybko), for the hard work, who, due to illness, was unable to attend the service: “I would like to mentally convey the expression of my gratitude to Father Sergius, the rector of this holy temple, who worked very hard on its creation. I am glad that he has gathered such a large community, such a parish, which undoubtedly loves its rector. But it happens that sometimes the Lord visits us with sorrow, and we fall ill, although it is never possible to understand why the illness is for the glory of God or for some even greater sorrow. I hope that the illness that visited Father Sergius was given to him by the Savior to cleanse his soul and for the remission of sins, and to prepare his soul for entering Great Lent. I would like to once again especially express to him my heartfelt gratitude both for this built church and for all of you, my dears, who are gathered in this parish and contribute to the prosperity of this house of God.”

His Holiness donated an embroidered shroud to the temple. “May the Lord protect you all, strengthen you in spiritual life, give you physical strength and help you rise from strength to strength, preparing yourself to meet the Bright Resurrection of Christ. Amen,” added the Primate of the Russian Church.

Then His Holiness the Patriarch announced a decree by which Abbot Sergius (Rybko), in consideration of the work on the construction of the Church of the Cathedral of Moscow Saints in Bibirevo, Moscow, was awarded the rank of archimandrite.

His Holiness also congratulated the Deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Advisor to the Mayor of Moscow, Advisor to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' on construction issues V.I. Happy 84th birthday Resina. “Vladimir Iosifovich Resin, who at one time was delegated by the mayor of Moscow in order to oversee the Program for the construction of new churches in Moscow and who continues to carefully carry out this ministry, largely helping the Patriarch resolve issues of implementing the construction of new churches, especially at the junction of the church -state relations, celebrates his birthday today,” noted the Primate of the Russian Church.

“Let me sincerely congratulate you, wish you God’s help and strength in your upcoming labors for the good of the Church, the Fatherland and the city of Moscow,” said His Holiness the Patriarch, presenting V.I. Resin image of Christ the Savior with jewelry.

The Church of the Cathedral of Moscow Saints was built on the territory of the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh in Bibirevo, Moscow.

Construction of the Church of the Cathedral of Moscow Saints began in 2003 with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II with funds from the parish of the Church of the Holy Spirit of the Descent at the Lazarevskoye Cemetery in Moscow, which was the main investor during the construction period and remains so now. All construction and decoration of the temple was carried out by two parishes, without attracting sponsorship funds.

Since the small temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh, which is an architectural monument, could no longer accommodate all the parishioners; in order to ensure the opportunity to serve the Divine Liturgy (until the new church was completely built), it was decided to first build one chapel in the basement of the church under construction and fully equip it for worship. On Christmas Day 2005, the first Liturgy was celebrated in the basement chapel dedicated to Equal-to-the-Apostles Nicholas of Japan. In 2007, an additional altar was consecrated in honor of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg.

In the spring of 2009, the first Liturgy was served in the upper church - in the chapel in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost.” The first Liturgy on the main altar in honor of the Council of Moscow Saints was celebrated on Easter 2012.

In 2015, the Church of the Cathedral of Moscow Saints was put into operation.

Today, the improvement of the temple territory is being completed; in the autumn, trees and shrubs are planned to be planted; the grave of the first rector, Archpriest Peter Davydov, through whose efforts the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh was restored, has been arranged.

The Church of the Cathedral of Moscow Saints is one-story with a ground floor, an attached bell tower more than 45 meters high and a belfry symmetrical to it, with an extension of the main western entrance and built-in five apses. The temple building has four pillars, the diameter of the central drum standing on four pillars is 12 meters, the height of the central dome with a cross is 39 meters.

The temple has 6 altars: five are located on the ground floor - the main one is dedicated to the Cathedral of Moscow Saints, two outer chapels are built in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Seeking the Lost” and St. Nicholas of Myra, two small ones are in honor of the New Martyrs of Butovo and St. Euphrosyne of Moscow. One, dedicated to Equal-to-the-Apostles Nicholas of Japan, is located in the basement of the temple. In addition, the church has an attached altar with an antimension in honor of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg.

Divine services are held daily in the Church of the Cathedral of Moscow Saints, since the Church of St. Sergius of Radonezh can accommodate no more than 100 people. On Sundays and holidays, two Divine Liturgies are celebrated.

In the ancient church of St. Sergius of Radonezh, solemn services are held on the day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - the patronal feast of the Annunciation chapel, on all days of memory of St. Sergius of Radonezh, as well as on the memorable day of the miracle of ending the cholera epidemic in the village of Bibirevo in 1873.

Currently, 10 priests and 4 deacons serve in the church. Two priests are rectors of other churches under construction in the North-Eastern Vicariate.

The church operates: a Sunday school in the name of the holy passion-bearer Tsarevich Alexy, the Russian Hand-to-Hand Combat Center named after. A.V. Suvorov, spiritual and educational lecture hall for adults, art studio. As part of the ministry to promote sobriety and prevent alcoholism, prayer services are regularly held and conversations are held with the priest and relevant specialists. The parish provides care for the assigned home church of the Venerable Martyr Elisaveta Feodorovna at the State Budgetary Institution “Scientific and Practical Rehabilitation Center” (in the premises of the boarding school). Conversations between the temple clergy and the wards of the social center of the Bibirevo district and with members of youth organizations are held monthly. Excursions are organized, including for the wards of the Bibirevo District Social Welfare Center and for schoolchildren.
