The Day of Family, Love and Loyalty is celebrated on July 8th. This is the day of remembrance of the Orthodox saints, the spouses Peter and Fevronia. They have long been revered in Russia as guardians of family and marriage. Peter was a man of noble birth, a prince. Having fallen in love with a simple Ryazan girl Fevronia, he married her. The couple reigned in the city of Murom at the end of the 12th - beginning of the 13th centuries, lived happily, loved each other tenderly and died on the same day. In ancient times, on July 8, both old and young went to church. In their prayers, young people asked God for great love, and older people for family harmony.

The Tale of Peter and Fevronia in icon stamps
The famous “Tale of Peter and Fevronia” was written by the famous spiritual writer of the mid-16th century, priest Ermolai (in monasticism Erasmus). Almost immediately it becomes the favorite reading of the Russian people and is distributed in a huge number of lists. About 350 of them have survived to this day. Many of these lists were decorated with miniatures, and soon hagiographic icons of the locally famous Murom saints Peter and Fevronia, and in monasticism David and Euphrosyne, also appeared. We invite you to read this story based on the marks of one of the icons of the 17th century. Moreover, the first, capital mark of the icon begins and ends the story. The images (unfortunately, with some losses) are accompanied by a translation that is as close as possible to the author's text.

City of Murom. The story of Prince Paul, and how the serpent flew to his wife, appearing to others in the form of her husband, and about the righteous Peter and Fevronia
Brand 1
There is a city in the Russian land called Mur.
Prince Paul is on the throne, the boyars and townspeople stand before him. The serpent, taking the guise of a prince, flies to his wife. The princess tells her husband about her trouble
Brand 1. Fragment.
It was ruled by a noble prince named Paul. From time immemorial, the devil, who has hated good in the human race, ordered the hostile serpent to fly to the wife of that prince for fornication. And he appeared to her as an obsession in his natural appearance, but to the people who came it seemed as if it was the prince himself sitting with his wife. Much time has passed in such obsession. The wife did not hide this and told the prince, her husband, about everything that had happened to her. The evil serpent did violence to her.
The princess reveals herself to her husband, Prince Pavel. He advises her to find out from the serpent the secret of his death.
Brand 1. Fragment.
The prince thought about what to do with the snake, and could not come up with an idea. And he said to his wife: “I’m thinking, wife, and I’m perplexed, what should I do with that evil one? I don’t know what kind of death to give him. When he talks to you, try to ask about this: does this villain know in his spirit that he is being threatened with death? If you find out something and tell us, then you will be freed not only in this century from its evil breath, and hissing, and vileness, which is disgusting to even talk about, but also in the future life you will appease the unhypocritical judge Christ.” The wife firmly imprinted her husband’s words in her heart and decided: “Okay, so it will be.”
The princess finds out the secret of his death from the serpent and informs her husband about it.
Brand 2.
One day, when a malicious snake came to her, she, well remembering the words engraved in her heart, turns with flattery to that villain, speaks sweet speeches to him and finally asks him with respect, praising him: “You know a lot, but do you know about your death: what will it be like and why? He, the hostile seducer, seduced by the affectionate flattery of his faithful wife, without hesitation, utters a secret to her, saying: “My death is from Peter’s shoulder, from Agrikov’s sword.” The wife, having heard such speeches, kept everything firmly in her heart and, after the departure of the enemy, she told the prince, her husband, what the snake had told her. The prince, having heard this, was perplexed, what kind of death was this “from Peter’s shoulder and from Agrikov’s sword”?
Prince Pavel calls his brother Peter to him and tells him about the secret of the snake's death
Brand 3.
He had a brother named Prince Peter. One day he called him to him and told him the words of the serpent that he had spoken to his wife. Prince Peter, having heard from his brother that the serpent named his namesake as the culprit of his death, began to think, without hesitation and courageously, how to kill the serpent. But only one thing confused him: he knew nothing about Agric’s sword.
In the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross, a youth appears to Prince Peter and shows Agrikov a sword lying in a crevice in the altar wall
Stamp 4.
Peter had the habit of walking around churches in solitude. There was a church of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross outside the city in a convent. And Peter came there alone to pray. And then a youth appeared to him, saying: “Prince, do you want me to show you Agrikov’s sword?” The prince, trying to fulfill his desire, said: “Yes, I will see!” Where is he?" The boy said: “Follow me.” And he showed him in the altar wall between the ceramides a hole in which the sword lay.
Prince Peter shows the sword to his brother and bows to his daughter-in-law
Brand 5.
The noble Prince Peter, taking that sword, came and told his brother about this. And from that day on he began to look for an opportunity to kill the snake. Every day he went to his brother and his daughter-in-law to bow.
Prince Peter discovers that a serpent has appeared to the princess under the guise of her husband.
Brand 6.
It happened one day that he came to his brother’s mansion, and immediately going to his daughter-in-law in another mansion, he saw his brother sitting with her. Returning from her, he met one of his brother’s servants and asked: “I went out from my brother to my daughter-in-law, but my brother remained in his mansion; I, without delaying anywhere, quickly came to my daughter-in-law’s mansion, and I don’t understand, and I’m surprised how my brother ended up in my daughter-in-law’s mansion before me?” The same man answered Peter: “Sir, after your departure, your brother did not leave his choir!” Peter then understood the craftiness of the crafty serpent. He came to his brother and asked: “How did you come here? After all, I left you from this mansion, and, without delaying anywhere, I came to your wife in the mansion, and saw you sitting with her, and was surprised how you ended up there before me. I came to you again, again, without slowing down anywhere, but you, I don’t know how, overtook me and ended up here before me.” Paul said: “Brother, I didn’t leave this choir anywhere after you left, and I didn’t visit my wife.” Prince Peter said to this: “Here it is, brother, the cunning of the crafty serpent: in your guise he appears to me so that I do not dare to kill him, mistaking him for you - my brother. Now, brother, don’t go anywhere from here. I will go there to fight the serpent, and with God’s help this evil serpent will be killed.”
Prince Peter kills the snake
Brand 7.
And, taking a sword called Agrikov, he came to the mansion to his daughter-in-law. And, seeing the serpent in the form of his brother and firmly convinced that it was not his brother, but a serpent seducer, he struck him with a sword. The serpent appeared in its true form, began to wriggle, and died, sprinkling the blessed Prince Peter with its blood.
Prince Peter on his sick bed. Those coming tell him about the Ryazan land, famous for its doctors
Brand 8.
Peter, from that harmful blood, became covered with scabs and ulcers, and a serious illness came upon him. And he sought healing in his country from many doctors, but could not get it from anyone. Peter heard that there are many healers within the Ryazan land...

...and ordered himself to be taken there, because he himself could not sit on a horse due to a great illness. He was brought to the borders of the Ryazan land, and sent his entire synclite to look for doctors.
Prince Peter's servant comes to the house of the maiden Fevronia
Brand 10.
One of the young men ahead of him escaped to a village called Laskovo. And he came to the gate of a certain house, and saw no one there. And he entered the house, and no one heard him. And he entered the temple and saw a wonderful vision: a girl was sitting, weaving cloth, and a hare was jumping in front of her.
And the girl said: “It is not good for a house to have no ears and a temple to have no eyes!” The young man, not understanding those words, asked the girl: “Where is the male person who lives here?” She answered: “My father and mother went to cry. My brother went over his feet to look into the eyes of death.”
The young man, not understanding her words, was surprised, seeing and hearing such wonderful things, and asked the girl: “When I came to you, I saw you at work, and I saw a hare jumping in front of you, and I heard some strange words from your lips, I didn’t even understand what you were talking about. ... She answered him: “Don’t you understand this? When you came to this house and entered my temple, you saw me sitting in simplicity. If there were a dog in our house, then, sensing you, approaching the house, it would bark at you - this is the house’s ears. And if there was a child in my temple, then, when he saw you approaching the house, he would tell me - these are the temple’s eyes. And when I told you that my father and my mother went on loan to cry, they went to the burial of the dead and wept there. When death comes for them, others will begin to cry for them - this is borrowed crying. I told you this about my brother because my father and brother are tree climbers, they collect honey from trees in the forest. My brother has now left for this task, and when he climbs high into a tree and looks at the ground through his legs, he will think: how not to fall from the height. If anyone breaks down, he will lose his life. That’s why I said that he went through his legs to look into the eyes of death.”
The young man said to her: “I see, girl, that you are wise. Tell me your name." She answered: “My name is Fevronia.” That young man told her: “I am a man of the Murom prince Peter - I serve him. My prince received a serious illness and ulcers.” He was covered with scabs from the blood of a hostile flying snake, which he killed with his own hand. And in his country he sought healing from many doctors, and did not receive it from any one. For this reason, I ordered myself to be brought here, because I heard that there are many doctors here. But we don’t know their names, we don’t know their homes, that’s why we ask about them.” She answered: “If someone asked for your prince, he could heal him.” The young man said: “What are you saying so that someone can claim my prince for themselves?!” If someone heals him, my prince will give him great wealth. But tell me the name of the doctor, who he is and where his dwelling is.” She answered: “Bring your prince here. If he is kind-hearted and humble in his answers, he will be healthy!”
The servant tells Prince Peter about the maiden Fevronia
Brand 11.
The young man quickly returned to his prince and told him everything in detail that he had seen and heard. The noble Prince Peter said: “Take me to where that girl is.”
Prince Peter is brought to the house of the maiden Fevronia, who agrees to heal him if he becomes her husband.
Brand 12.
And they brought him to the house where the girl was. And the prince sent his youths to her, saying: “Tell me, girl, who wants to heal me? Let him heal me and take me a lot of wealth.” She, without embarrassment, answered: “I want to heal him, but I don’t demand wealth from him. I have this word for him: if I am not his wife, there is no need for me to heal him.”
Prince Peter sends to Fevronia to say he agrees
Brand 13.
And when the man came, he told his prince what the girl had said. Prince Peter neglected her words, thinking: “How can I, being a prince, take the daughter of a tree-dweller as my wife?!” And, sending to her, he said: “Tell her: what kind of medicine is this?! But let him heal! If she heals me, I’ll take her as my wife.”
Fevronia hands over a vessel with a drug and explains how to get healing
Brand 14.
Those who came conveyed those words to her. She, taking a small vessel, scooped up sourdough (leaf leaven) of her own, blew on it and said: “Establish a bath for your prince, and let him anoint his body with it, where there are scabs and ulcers, and let him leave one scab unanointed - and he will be healthy.” !
Prince Peter, testing the wisdom of Fevronia, sends her a bunch of flax so that she can make a shirt, ports and ubrusets from it
Brand 15.
And they brought this ointment to the prince. And he ordered to establish a bathhouse. He wanted to test the girl’s answers to see if she was as wise as he had heard about her speeches from his youth. He sent her with one of his servants one piece of flax, saying: “This girl wants to be my wife for wisdom’s sake. If Mudra, then let him make me a shirt, and ports, and an ubrusets (belt or towel) from this flax while I’m in the bathhouse.”
Virgin Fevronia, having received the flax, commands the servant to remove the log from the stove, chop off the “ducklings” and give it to Prince Peter so that he can make a loom from it
Brand 16.
The servant brought her a load of flax and handed it to her, and said the prince’s word. She told the servant: “Climb onto our stove and, taking the log from the ridge (the crossbar above the stove), bring it here.” He, having listened to her, brought some logs. She, having measured it with a span (an ancient Russian measure of length: the distance between the ends of the spread thumb and index fingers; 1 span = 17.78 cm), said: “Chop this from this log.” He cut it off. She told him: “Take this duck (cut) of log, and go give your prince from me, and tell him: while I comb this bunch, let your prince prepare for me from this duck a machine and all the equipment on which its cloth will be woven."
Prince Peter sends to tell Fevronia about the impossibility of fulfilling her task. Fevronia answers the prince in kind
Brand 17.
The servant brought the prince some duck logs and retold the girl’s words. The prince said: “Go and tell the girl that it is impossible to make this device from such a small piece of wood in such a short time!” The servant arrived and gave her the prince’s speech. The girl answered: “Is it possible for an adult man to make a shirt, portas, and ubrusets from one bunch of flax in a short time, while he is in the bathhouse?” The servant left and told everything to the prince. The prince was amazed at her answer.
Prince Peter is anointed in the bathhouse with a potion sent by Fevronia
Brand 18.
After some time, Prince Peter went to the bathhouse to wash and, at the girl’s command, anointed his sores and scabs with ointment. And one scab was left unanointed at the command of the maiden. Coming out of the bathhouse, I didn’t feel any illness. The next morning I saw the whole body healthy and smooth, except for one scab, which was not anointed at the command of the maiden. And he marveled at the quick healing.
The healed Prince Peter sends Fevronia gifts, which she does not accept.
Brand 19.
But he did not want to take her as his wife because of her origin and sent her gifts. She didn't accept them.
Prince Peter leaves for Murom and falls ill again
Brand 20.
Prince Peter went to his homeland, the city of Murom, healthy. There was a single scab on him that was not anointed with the maiden command. And from that scab, many scabs began to spread throughout his body from the first day on which he went to his homeland. And he became again all cut off with many scabs and ulcers, as before.
Prince Peter returns to Fevronia and again asks for healing, giving his word that he will take her as his wife
Brand 21.
And again the prince returned to the girl for the tested healing. And when he arrived at her house, he sent to her with shame, asking for healing. She, not holding any anger, said: “If he becomes my husband, he will be healed.” He gave her a firm word that he had the intention of taking her as his wife. She again, as before, gave him the same drug that was previously written about.
The healed Prince Peter takes Fevronia to Murom, where they sit at a feast with Prince Paul and his wife
Brand 22.
He, soon receiving healing, took her as his wife. This is how Fevronia became a princess. They came to their homeland, the city of Murom, and lived there in all piety, not departing from God’s commandments in any way.
Repose of Prince Paul
Brand 23.
After a short time, the previously mentioned Prince Paul departed from this life. The noble Prince Peter, after his brother, becomes the sole autocrat of his city.
The boyar accuses Princess Fevronia of disorderly behavior at meals. Prince Peter tests her: the miracle of turning bread crumbs into smoking incense occurs
Brand 24.
One day, one of her servants came to the blessed Prince Peter to slander her like this: “From each of her meals,” he said, “she comes out disorderly: before getting up, she collects crumbs in her hand, as if she were hungry.” The noble Prince Peter, wanting to test her, ordered her to dine with him at the same table. And as soon as dinner was over, she, as usual, collected her crumbs from the table into her hand. Prince Peter grabbed her hand and, opening it, saw fragrant incense and incense. And from that day on I stopped testing her in anything.
The boyars complain to Prince Peter about Fevronia, since their wives do not want her to dominate them
Brand 25.
The boyars did not love his princess Fevronia for the sake of their wives, since she was not a princess by birth, but God glorified her good for the sake of her life.
At the feast, the boyars offer Princess Fevronia to leave the Murom borders. In exchange for the proposed ransom, she chooses her husband
Brand 26.
After a considerable time, his boyars came to the prince in rage, saying: “We all want, prince, to serve you righteously and have you as autocrat, but we don’t want Princess Fevronia to dominate our wives. If you want to be an autocrat, let you have another princess. Fevronia, having taken enough wealth for herself, let her go wherever she wants!” Blessed Peter, it was his custom not to fly into rage over anything, answered with humility: “Turn to Fevronia, and we’ll listen to what he says.”
They, frantic and filled with shamelessness, decided to throw a feast. And they created it. And when they were cheerful, they began to raise their shameless voices, like barking dogs, robbing the saint of God’s gift, with which God promised not to separate her even after death. And they said: “Madam Princess Fevronia! The whole city and the boyars are telling you: give us what we ask of you!” She answered: “Take what you ask!” They said with one mouth: “We, madam, all want Prince Peter to rule over us. Our wives do not want you to dominate them. Having taken enough wealth for yourself, go wherever you want!” She answered: “I promised you: whatever you ask, you will receive. I tell you now: give me what I ask of you.” They, the evil ones, were happy, not knowing the future, and promised with an oath: “Whatever you say, you will immediately take it without any contradiction.” She said: “I ask for nothing else, only for my wife, Prince Peter!” They answered: “If he wants to, we won’t object to you.” The enemy filled them with thoughts that if Peter was not Prince, they would appoint someone else as autocrat, and each of the boyars kept in his mind that he himself wanted to be an autocrat.
Blessed Prince Peter did not love temporary autocracy above God’s commandments, but walking according to His commandments, he adhered to them, just as the God-voiced Matthew preaches in his gospel. It is said that if anyone lets his wife go, except for the word of adultery, and marries another, he himself commits adultery. This blessed prince acted according to the Gospel: he considered his autocracy to be nothing, so as not to violate the commandments of God.
Princess Fevronia, who went into exile, denounces a certain person of lustful thoughts
Brand 27.
They, the evil boyars, gave Peter and Fevronia ships on the river. There was a river under the city called the Oka. They sailed down the river in ships. There was a certain person on the ship of the blessed princess Fevronia; and his wife was on the same ship. That man, having received a thought from the evil demon, looked at the saint with a thought. She, realizing his evil thoughts, quickly denounced him, telling him: “Draw water from the river on this side of the ship.” He got it. And she ordered him to drink. He drank. She said again: “Draw up water from the other side of this vessel.” He got it. And she ordered him to drink again. He drank. She asked: “Is this water the same or is one sweeter than the other?” He answered: “The water is the same, lady.” Then she said: “The female nature is also the same. Why, having left your wife, are you thinking about someone else’s?” That man, realizing that she had the gift of insight, was afraid to think like that in the future.
The grief of Prince Peter about the abandoned fatherland and the miracle about the felled trees blessed by Fevronia, which grew and blossomed overnight
Brand 28.
As evening approached, they began to settle down on the shore. Blessed Prince Peter began to think about what would happen next, since he, by his own will, lost his autocracy. The wonderful Fevronia told him: “Do not grieve, prince, the merciful God, Creator and Provider of everything, will not leave us in poverty!”
On that shore they prepared food for blessed Prince Peter for dinner. And the cook planted small trees to hang the cauldrons on. After dinner, the holy princess Fevronia, who was walking along the shore and saw those trees, blessed them, saying: “May they be great trees in the morning, having branches and foliage.” And so it came true: when they got up the next morning, they found those trees to be large trees with branches and foliage.
Civil strife in Murom
Brand 29.
Many nobles in the city died from the sword. Each of them wanted to rule. And they destroyed themselves.
The boyars call on Peter and Fevronia to return to reign
Brand 30.
And when people already wanted to sweep their property onto ships from the shore, nobles from the city of Murom came, saying: “Lord prince, from all the nobles and from the whole city we came to you, so that you will not leave us orphans, but return to your fatherland. Many nobles in the city died from the sword. Each of them wanted to rule, and they destroyed themselves. And those who survived, together with all the people, pray to you, saying: Lord, prince, even if we angered you and irritated you, not wanting Princess Fevronia to rule over our wives, now, with all our houses, we are your slaves, and we want you, and we love and pray: do not leave us, your servants!”
The return of Peter and Fevronia to Murom and their pious reign
Brand 31.
Blessed Prince Peter and blessed Princess Fevronia returned to their city. And they reigned in that city, walking in all the commandments and justifications of the Lord, without blemish, remaining in unceasing prayers and mercy towards all people under authority, like a child-loving father and mother; Having the same love for everyone, they did not love pride, nor theft, nor did they save perishable wealth, but grew rich in God. They were true shepherds of their city, and not mercenaries. They ruled the city with truth and meekness, and not with rage. They welcomed strangers, fed the hungry, clothed the naked, and delivered the poor from misfortunes.
Peter and Fevronia order to make a single coffin for themselves
Brand 32.
When their pious repose had arrived, they begged God that their repose would occur in one hour. And they left the covenant, so that both would be laid in one coffin. And they ordered to build themselves two coffins in one stone, having only one partition between them.
Monastic tonsure of Peter and Fevronia
Brand 33.
At the same time, they themselves put on monastic robes. And blessed Prince Peter was named David in the monastic rank, while the Monk Fevronia was named Euphrosyne in the monastic rank.
Peter-David sends to tell Fevronia-Euphrosyne, who embroiders the air, that he is dying. She asks him to wait until she finishes work.
Brand 34.
At that time, the Venerable and Blessed Fevronia, named Euphrosyne, for the Church of the Most Pure Cathedral Church, with her own hands embroidered the air (plate for the paten or chalice), on which the faces of saints were depicted. The venerable and blessed prince Peter, named David, sent to her, saying: “O sister Euphrosyne, I already want to leave the body, but I’m waiting for you, so that we can leave together. She answered: “Wait, sir, until I get air for the holy church.”
Peter-David again sends to Fevronia-Euphrosinia to say that he can’t wait any longer.
Brand 35.
He sent to her a second time, saying: “I won’t wait long for you.” And he also sent it for the third time, saying: “I already want to repose and I’m no longer waiting for you!” She embroidered the last air patterns of that saint, but she has not yet embroidered one saint’s robe; Having sewn her face, she stopped, and stuck her needle into the air, and wrapped it with the thread with which she was sewing. And she sent word to blessed Peter, named David, about their repose together.
Simultaneous death of Peter and Fevronia
Brand 36.
And, having prayed, they gave up their holy souls into the hands of God on the 25th day of the month of June.
Position of the deceased Peter and Fevronia in separate coffins
Brand 37.
After their repose, people wanted Blessed Prince Peter to be laid down inside the city, at the cathedral church of the Most Pure Mother of God, while Fevronia - outside the city, in a convent, at the Church of the Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross, saying that in the monastic image of indwelling saints it is impossible put in one coffin.
Placing coffins with the bodies of Peter and Fevronia in different churches.
Brand 38.
And they set up separate coffins for them and put their bodies in them: St. Peter, named David, put the body in a separate coffin and placed it inside the city in the Church of the Holy Mother of God until the morning, while St. Fevronia, named Euphrosyne, put the body in a separate coffin and placed it outside the city , in the Church of the Exaltation of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross. The common coffin, which they themselves ordered to be hewn out in one stone, remained empty in the same church of the Most Pure Cathedral Church, which is inside the city.
Finding the bodies of Peter and Fevronia in a single coffin
Brand 39.
The next morning, when people got up, they found their separate coffins empty, the ones in which they had been placed. Their holy bodies were found inside the city, in the cathedral church of the Most Pure Mother of God, in a single tomb, which they ordered themselves to create.
Distribution of the bodies of Peter and Fevronia into separate coffins.
Brand 40.
Foolish people, who were worried about them both during their lifetime and after their honest death, again transferred their bodies into separate coffins and carried them away again.
Secondary discovery of the bodies of Saints Peter and Fevronia in a single tomb. Divine services and healings at their relics
Brand 41.
And again the next morning they found the saints in a single tomb. And after that they no longer dared to touch their holy bodies and laid them in a single coffin, in which they themselves commanded, at the cathedral church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary inside the city, in the coffin that God gave for enlightenment and salvation to that city. And those who with faith resort to the shrine of their relics receive infinite healing.
The relics of the famous Peter and Fevronia in a single coffin. Their prayer to the Lord for the city of Murom and all Christians
Brand 1. Fragment.
We, according to our strength, will add praise to them.
Rejoice, Peter, for you have been given by God the power to kill the flying fierce serpent! Rejoice, Fevronia, for in the female head of holy men you had wisdom! Rejoice, Peter, for while he bore scabs and sores on his body, he valiantly endured sorrow! Rejoice, Fevronia, for from God you had the gift in your virgin youth to heal ailments! Rejoice, glorious Peter, for for the sake of God he voluntarily abandoned the commandments of autocracy, so as not to leave his wife! Rejoice, wondrous Fevronia, for with your favor in one night small trees grew great and raised branches and foliage! Rejoice, honest heads, for in your power you lived in humility, prayers, and alms without pride, therefore Christ gave you grace, so that even after death your bodies lie inseparably in the grave, but in spirit you stand before the Lord Christ! Rejoice, reverend and blessed ones, for even after death you invisibly grant healing to those who come to you with faith!
But we pray to you, O blessed spouses, pray for us, who create your memory with faith!
Symbol of the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Fidelity
Although the official symbol of Family Day is a white daisy, the images of Peter and Fevronia, birds building a nest, and trees as a symbol of the family are used as window decorations. To your taste, you can decorate the windows with other symbols that reflect love and loyalty in your family.

Peter and Fevronia
According to the life, the blessed prince Peter ascended the Murom throne in 1203. A few years earlier, he fell ill with leprosy, from which no one could cure him. In a dream, it was revealed to the prince that he could be healed by the beekeeper’s daughter Fevronia, a peasant woman from the village of Laskovoy in the Ryazan land. The prince fell in love with Fevronia for her piety, wisdom and kindness and vowed to marry her when she recovered. The girl cured the prince, and they got married.
However, when Peter inherited the reign after his brother, the boyars did not want to have a princess of simple rank and demanded that the prince divorce. But he chose to voluntarily renounce power and wealth and went into exile with his wife. Then troubles began in Murom, the boyars called the prince back. The prince and princess returned, ruled for a long time and earned the love of the people.
In old age, they took monastic vows in different monasteries with the names David and Euphrosyne, prayed to God to die on the same day, and bequeathed themselves to be buried together, in a coffin with a thin partition in the middle. The holy spouses each died in their own cell on the same day and hour - July 8 (according to the old style - June 25) 1228. They were buried in Murom, in the Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Peter and Fevronia were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547. Now their relics are in the Holy Trinity Convent in Murom.

Symbol of eternal love, templates
To express your feeling of love, decorate your windows with a pair of swans or doves. Silhouettes of lovers or children running around their parents will look unusual. And don’t forget about the main symbol of the holiday - Her Majesty the Chamomile.
Russian saints Peter and Fevronia are the inspirations of my creativity!
I am very interested in the topic - the legend of the Russian saints Peter and Fevronia. I have made several works - wedding gifts - for newlyweds, as well as for any wedding anniversary. And I decided to continue it, I want to share with you new developments that are only at the very beginning of the journey.
On July 8, starting in 2008, the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is widely celebrated in all Russian cities. Many consider it a worthy alternative to Valentine's Day, which came from abroad. Indeed, in the domestic holiday there is more spiritual love and admiration for loyalty and devotion. And all because the holiday is closely associated with Saints Peter and Fevronia - a couple who are an example of ideal family relationships.
This photograph depicting Peter and Fevronia is from the Internet, of which there are a great many.
Prince Peter, who was the son of Prince Yuri of Murom, was struck by terrible leprosy. All attempts to cure the unfortunate man from his illness ended in failure; no one could restore Peter’s health. Having almost resigned himself to his fate, the man saw an unusual dream in which it was revealed to him that there was a girl in the world who could heal the affected body. In a prophetic dream, the name of the savior was revealed to Peter - Fevronia.
Fevronia was a peasant woman from a Ryazan village, the daughter of an ordinary beekeeper. Since childhood, the girl studied herbs and had the gift of healing; even wild animals obeyed her and did not dare to show aggression. The young prince immediately liked the amazingly kind and beautiful young lady, and he promised that he would marry the beauty immediately after his recovery. Fevronia put the man on his feet, but he did not keep his promise and did not lead the village girl down the aisle. Most likely, this was the reason that leprosy fell on the prince’s head with greater force.
The messengers went for the healer for the second time, and Fevronia did not refuse treatment to the deceiver and again gave him health. After this, Peter married his savior and until the end of his days he did not regret what he had done. According to legend, the spouses lived in love, harmony and respect, never deceived each other and always spoke flatteringly about their other halves.
These are the stylized Peter and Fevronia that I came up with after some time, in their hands - a symbol of love - a bouquet of daisies.
The dolls are in the form of angels, mounted on a felt panel.
I decided to create an image of Peter and Fevronia, stylized, of course, from felt. And this is what I got - I didn’t expect it myself, especially from Fevronia - she really wanted to have a hairstyle in the form of perky ponytails with bows...
Now I have begun to take this topic more seriously, and here is the beginning - Peter and Fevronia are not yet dressed, but confidently stand on their own feet... Their bodies are created using the “primed textile” technique. And the boots turned out to be more similar to modern ones, but who knows what kind of shoes they wore in Rus' in 1200 - 1250...
I plan to create dolls for the day of the city of Ryazan, August 3, and then - as God willing...
I will be very glad to see your comments, friends!
With gratitude for visiting and viewing the topic - Svetlana!!!

Making an applique from felt “Peter and Fevronia of Murom”
The master class competition “Slavic Motifs” allows everyone to be transported back to ancient times and personally touch the original Russian traditions and cultural values, the guardians of which were our ancestors.
Today's master class is dedicated to making an applique that symbolizes home and family happiness, love and fidelity - to Peter and Fevronia of Murom.
To make the application you will need:
- felt (it is advisable to use soft shades to make the product delicate) 1-2 mm thick, no more than 1 A4 sheet of each color;
- cardboard base;
- hot-melt gun and glue sticks (those who don’t have a glue gun can use Moment Crystal glue; but unlike hot-melt glue, it has a number of disadvantages: drying time, rigidity of the glued parts, pungent odor);
- threads;
- scissors (stationery and manicure);
- gel glitter;
- soft pencil;
- a little patience and a lot of desire.
To begin, we will prepare a template for the future application in a graphic editor. As the basis for Peter and Fevronia, I took the characters from the animated film Prince Vladimir. Peter - Yaropolk, Fevronia - Princess Olga. The boat, pigeons and waves were drawn randomly. For your convenience, I have attached a ready-made template.
Please note that the felt colors used are recommended. You can use colors according to your taste or depending on the available range. For those new to working with felt who want to repeat this master class, I can advise you to pay attention to ready-made sets of sheet felt in A4 format in different colors.
So let's get started. We print the template on a printer in A4 format in portrait orientation so that the image occupies the width of the entire sheet. For those craftswomen who do not have a printer, I can recommend a method of copying from a monitor screen, which has helped me out more than once.
Take your time to cut all the parts along the contour. Here it is necessary to adhere to a certain sequence.
First, we cut out the base piece of the applique (circle) and the wave. We outline the resulting part with a pencil on cardboard and light gray felt (it is advisable to use soft felt, as it is more elastic). Cut it out.
We cover the cardboard with felt in a U-shaped stitch using white thread. The stitch length should be no more than 3 mm, the stitch width should be no less than 3 mm (otherwise the edge of the base may “spread” and expose the cardboard). When sheathing, the cardboard base is not punctured.
We continue to cut the paper applique template. We completely cut out the figures of Peter, Fevronia, a boat and doves.
The next step is to cut the paper templates of the figures of Peter and Fevronia as shown in the figure below:
Let's start making the figurine of Peter. We prepare a felt backing in a color that matches the color of the cloak.
We continue to cut the paper template of the Peter figurine and “transfer” the resulting details onto the felt.
The details of the cloak must be duplicated.
Preparing the details of the dress.
And also belts. Its size must match the size on the original template.
We carry out similar actions with the head and hand of the Peter figurine (we duplicate them to make the base and the main part). We make the length of the fur strip on the hat twice as long as the template, so that when gluing, the fur turns off the entire hat, and the joint remains only at the back of the head.
Let's start assembling the Peter figurine. The glue is applied to the entire surface of one of the parts to be glued, the other is pressed tightly against it. We assemble the head and torso separately. Let's start working with the substrate. Layer by layer.
Layered execution of the body:
- Substrate;
- Left part of the cloak, dress insert, dress, right part of the cloak;
- The left part of the cloak, the belt, the right part of the cloak, the cuff of the dress.
To make the collar/lapels of the cloak, cut out a small rectangle from felt and cut it diagonally. Carefully trim the resulting triangles to the appropriate size of the figure.
As a result, we have the following result:
To decorate and add volume, we use glitter gel. Do not forget that the drying time of the gel at this thickness of application is 1-2 hours.
The figurine of Peter is ready.
Now let's start working on the figurine of Fevronia. It is as multi-layered as the figurine of Peter. We start with a body backing made of felt in the color of the raincoat.
The next layer consists of a dress and a headdress.
Next comes another layer consisting of a dress.
At the same time, we prepare the face, neck and hands.
For the topmost layer we prepare the details of the cloak and dress cuffs.
Making the insert detail in the dress.
As well as details of the belt and the fur strip on the hat (remember that its length should be twice as long as the template, so that when gluing the fur turns off the entire hat, and the seam remains only at the back of the head). The belt is made with a small margin, which will be cut “in place”.
Let's begin layer-by-layer assembly of the Fevronia figurine.
A little trick: you can highlight the breasts using nail scissors, making a small incision of a few millimeters.
From felt scraps we form the details of the folds of the raincoat.
All that remains is to apply the final touches with gel glitter in the form of contour lines.
This is what you should end up with:
Now let's start making the boat, waves and pigeons.
And we begin to gradually glue the resulting parts onto a cardboard circle covered with felt.
Glue on the figures of Peter and Fevronia.
We outline the outline of the pigeons with gel glitter and also glue them onto the cardboard base.
Additionally, the applique can be decorated with monograms using gel glitter.
Hooray! A lot of work has been done, and here is the result of our efforts.
The finished product can be supplemented with a ribbon loop, sewn or glued to the back wall, and hung on a hook. Or place it standing on a table or shelf.
Thank you for your attention!
If you have any questions during the process of making the applique, do not hesitate to ask me through private messages or comments to the master class. It would be my great pleasure to help you overcome any difficulties that may arise.
I can also provide a colorful version of the master class in pdf format upon request.
Remember, creativity, like any other activity, requires perseverance, attention to detail and is not afraid of improvisation.
Sincerely,
Your MiracleLuda.
