Kiev Opera and China: what holiday is today and angel day on April 20

When the Orthodox Church canonizes people as saints, the names are included in the calendar of months (saints). The list of historical figures includes pious Christians who pleased God with their way of life on earth. Orthodox traditions prescribe taking into account the calendar when choosing a name for a child, but this is not necessary. Baptism allows a person to be named again. If the official name does not coincide with the church calendar, you can get a second one when converting to Orthodoxy.

Also, the day of the angel is determined by the monthly word. If a person is named without taking into account the data from the month book, the name day is celebrated in accordance with the patron saint closest to the birthday, whose name coincides with the official name.

Vasily Osmak

Vasily Osmak was born on April 20, 1870 in the village of Gogolev in the Kyiv region. The famous architect studied at the Second Kyiv Gymnasium, after which he entered the University of St. Vladimir, and later St. Petersburg University.

Since 1900, Osmak has been engaged in teaching activities. In 1917 he received the title of professor at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute. But Vasily Alexandrovich continued to study architecture. One of his first works was the building of a private girls' gymnasium on the street. Kotsyubinsky in Kyiv. Occupying the position of architect of the University of St. Vladimir, Osmak designed the Clinical Campus on Baykova Hill and the university library. He is also the author of a unique ensemble - a block of Vladimirskaya Street.

In 1931, Vasily Osmak was arrested on charges of involvement in the “wrong party” and sentenced to 5 years in concentration camps. After such a note in your personal file, was it possible to talk about your previous job? After his release, the architect did not live even ten years - in 1942, Vasily Osmak died.

Throughout his life, Vasily Osmak created many successful projects, many of which, unfortunately, were destroyed during the German occupation. But he has on his account the Vernadsky National Library, the Polytechnic University Library, the Operetta Theater and even the Dynamo Stadium. Ironically, the club of the GPU - the department that arrested him - was also designed by Osmak. Today, by the way, this is the Kiev Academic Theater for Young Spectators on Lipki, and Viktyuk performed there. Read more about this, and about the theater itself, here.

Names and birthdays of those born in April

Name days in April are marked in the Orthodox calendar in honor of many holy martyrs, whose names are not used in modern life. If parents do not want to officially name their daughter or son as indicated in the calendar, they can name the child a consonant option.

On some days the church does not commemorate the holy martyrs, since memorial dates are not dedicated to them. In this case, it is allowed to choose a female name, the version of which is consonant with the male one. Also, April daughters can be named in honor of the saint on the nearest Memorial Day.

Features of choosing a name for a child

There are certain tips for choosing a name for a newborn. We recommend that you familiarize yourself with them first:

Choose a name that will sound good with your middle name. Sometimes parents do not pay enough attention to this moment, and the child suffers in adulthood.

Be careful if you want to name your child after someone. It is advisable to become thoroughly familiar with the biography of this person. It is generally accepted that a name leaves a certain imprint on a person’s fate. But there are also cases when the character traits of one person can be transferred to another. Moreover, the child can repeat some episodes from the life of his namesake. So be careful and be especially careful about this issue.

How to determine a child’s name day if he was not named on the saint’s name day

It happens that you liked the name of a saint, but it appears on a different day, and not on the child’s birthday. In this case, priests recommend looking through the church calendar and finding the name of the saint after the birthday. The first one to meet and be named day. And if the name does not appear in the calendar, then you need to seek help from a priest who will help you choose one that is consonant.

Name day or name day is called one of the main and important days in the life of every Christian. This day is considered the day of the child’s heavenly patron, after whom he was named. Priests recommend coming to church on such holidays and reading prayers of gratitude to your guardian angels for protecting you.

Child's baptismal name

It happens that during baptism the priest gives the child a different name. This is explained by the fact that when inducing damage or other magical rituals, they use the church name of the child. That is why parents are forbidden to tell it to anyone. It is believed that the saint protects the baby and protects him from negative influences.

Remember that choosing a name is quite serious for every person. You need to think carefully before making a decision. After all, a child is given a name once and for the rest of his life.

The Lord is always with you!

Day in Orthodoxy. Signs and rituals on this day

April 20 (April 7, old style) is Akulina Day; today the memory of the holy martyrs Rufinus and Aquilina, who converted 200 Roman soldiers to Christianity, is honored. Rufinus and Aquilina were executed under Emperor Maximinus.

The Holy Martyr Rufinus was a deacon. During the persecution of Christians, he was captured in the Pontic city of Sinope and thrown into prison for professing the Christian faith. Aquilina came to Rufinus and took care of him, for which she was also imprisoned.

While imprisoned, Rufinus and Aquilina were able to convert 200 Roman soldiers to Christianity, showing them miracles of faith. As a result, they were all executed together by cutting off their heads. On the anniversary of the martyrdom of Rufin and Aquilina, Akulinin Day is now celebrated among the people.

Signs and rituals:

As folk beliefs say, on Akulinin's day mermaids awaken from their winter sleep. Therefore, from ancient times in Kievan Rus it was supposed to take canvases to the rivers on this day, so that the water beauties would have something to wear and not freeze. For this, the mermaids did not interfere with their benefactors.

By the way, people believed that mermaids could tickle a person to death in the water, therefore, in order to scare the river maidens away from themselves, they were supposed to take a bunch of wormwood with them when going into the water.

According to one legend, sometimes mermaids turn into water lilies. Fearing the sun that is in love with them, they only go ashore at night and lead their round dances, and during the day they become water lilies of wondrous beauty. Therefore, it was believed that by picking a water lily, a person commits a great sin, ending the fragile life of a water maiden.

American scientists are confident in the real existence of mermaids

On Akulina, our ancestors monitored the weather. If the day was rainy, then they expected a poor spring harvest, but such weather promised a good harvest of viburnum. We also looked closely at the sky in the evening of this day: if there are a lot of stars in it, then there will be a lot of mushrooms and berries in the forest this year.

  • Rain on Akulina - viburnum will be good.
  • Cool and sunny - for a harvest of bread and buckwheat.
  • If the stars shine strongly at night, and clouds appear in the sky in the morning, then a thunderstorm will break out by lunchtime.
  • A red sunrise means a change in weather.
  • The appearance of tall cumulus clouds heralds sunny weather the next day.

Name days according to the church calendar in April

The custom of naming children born after saints appeared after Christianity was adopted in Rus', and therefore the people were baptized. Our ancestors were completely convinced that the patron of the name chosen for the child would protect and guide his beloved child throughout his life. Therefore, previously it was selected not only for its beauty, which most often happens now, but also taking into account many objective factors.

A child’s name day is usually called the day whose date is mentioned in a special church calendar. In deeply religious families, this holiday is often celebrated no less solemnly than another birthday.

Saints are a special calendar, each new day in which is dedicated to the commemoration of a saint. Indications of the days of remembrance of the named saints can be found quite easily in the month book. It must contain notes about the annual cycle of church holidays.

Men's

There are a lot of men's name days in April. Usually, Old Church Slavonic names appear in the calendar for this spring month. If parents have chosen a modern option for their child that is not on the list, then they should turn to the priest for help. The latter will help you choose a name that is consonant with the one you like.

So, on the first of the name day, three male names are celebrated at once. If we talk about the common ones, then these are Ivan and Dmitry. And Innocent is also worth congratulating.

The 2nd is a holiday for Victor, German, Maxim, Sergei and Nikita. The third one belongs to Kirill. There are some other options on the list, but they are less common and almost not used today. For example, among these are Abraham (April 8), Isaac (11th), Sebastian (19th), Terenty (23rd), Aristarchus, Lucian (28th).

Each person can find a complete list of names in the church calendar. The priest in the nearest church will probably agree to provide information about the option parents are interested in.

Recently, beautiful old Orthodox names for boys have become increasingly popular. For example, Myron. A boy with this name will celebrate his April name day on the 2nd. And also Makar (5th), Zakhar (6th), Tikhon (7th), Ephraim (9th), Efim (14th), Gabriel (22nd), Lukyan (28th).

Women's

And also in April there are many women's name days. It’s interesting that the men’s meet almost every day, but there are short breaks with the women’s. For example, ladies born on April 3, as well as the period from 9 to 12, from 22 to 24, turned out to have none at all. If we talk about the names that are common today and always popular, we can note the following: Daria - April 1, Alexandra, Svetlana - April 2, Anastasia - April 5 and 28, Anna - April 13, Maria - April 14, 17 and 21, Irina - April 29. As you can see, bearers of some names have several holidays in the second month of spring. So, Masha’s name day fell on three different days at once.

Among the rarely used female names today, it is worth noting the following: Claudia - April 2, Praskovya - April 2 and 8, Akulina and Evdokia - April 20, Marfa - April 25 and 26. Although experts note that in the last five years, young parents have increasingly begun to turn their attention to such options when a girl appears in the family.

It is believed that if a person has a lot of Angel Days throughout the year, then he does not have to celebrate them every time. The best option is to choose the day closest to your date of birth.
